World Cup: Fati in, Thiago and De Gea out of Spain’s squad

Spain included FC Barcelona’s Ansu Fati but left out Liverpool midfielder Thiago Alcantara and Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea from their 26-man FIFA World Cup squad announced on Friday.

The 20-year-old Fati made his international debut in 2020 at 17.

In his second game he became the youngest player to score for Spain, breaking a record held since 1925 by Juan Errazquien.

But the forward is fighting his way back from four surgeries to repair an injury to his left knee, suffered in November 2020.

“He was one of our last question marks. I doubted until the last minute.

”But I decided for him because his technical qualities are amazing and being here with us could work as a big motivation for him as he’s still working to get back to peak form,” Spain coach Luis Enrique told a news conference.

“It’s a process that he’s going through, to become the Ansu Fati that he was before the injury.

“Surely it could be assessed when he will recover his previous level. It is one of the things we all look for.”

Enrique declined to comment on the players who were left out.

But the absence of veterans like De Gea, Thiago, and FC Barcelona defender Marcos Alonso points to the manager’s preference to go all-in with Spain’s new generation of talent.

De Gea has fallen out of favour with Enrique who said in March he “wanted to test other goalkeepers”.

Also, Thiago saw his role diminish with the rise of Barca teenagers Pedri, 19, and 18-year-old Gavi.

“Youth gives you freedom because you are not yet aware of the consequences,” Enrique said. “Yet, most of the youngsters that are with us are already in high-level teams.

“The bar that I’m setting is infinity. My goal is to compete in every game.

“There’s no one outside of Spain who rules out Spain as a candidate to be among the best. We are going to give war, there is no doubt.”

Spain have been drawn in Group E with Costa Rica, Germany and Japan.

    Squad:

Goalkeepers: Unai Simon (Athletic Bilbao), Robert Sanchez (Brighton & Hove Albion), David Raya (Brentford).

Defenders: Cesar Azpilicueta (Chelsea), Dani Carvajal (Real Madrid), Eric Garcia (FC Barcelona), Hugo Guillamon (Valencia), Pau Torres (Villarreal), Aymeric Laporte (Manchester City), Jordi Alba (FC Barcelona), Jose Gaya (Valencia).

Midfielders: Sergio Busquets (FC Barcelona), Rodri Hernandez (Manchester City), Gavi (FC Barcelona), Carlos Soler (Paris St-Germain), Marcos Llorente (Atletico Madrid), Pedri Gonzalez (FC Barcelona), Koke Resurreccion (Atletico Madrid).

Forwards: Ferran Torres (FC Barcelona), Nico Williams (Athletic Bilbao), Yeremi Pino (Villarreal), Alvaro Morata (Atletico Madrid), Marco Asensio (Real Madrid), Pablo Sarabia (Paris St-Germain), Dani Olmo (RB Leipzig), Ansu Fati (FC Barcelona)

REVEALED: Why Man Utd keeper De Gea split with agent Mendes

Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea ended his relationship with agent Jorge Mendes three years ago.

De Gea signed his latest contract at Old Trafford in September 2019.

The negotiations were long and drawn out before De Gea eventually signed on the dotted line for a deal until 2023 worth £375,000 per week.

But The Athletic says the Spaniard got rid of superagent Mendes during the negotiations.

De Gea, 31, was said to have an agreement to work with Mendes’ Gestifute agency – but there was no legal contract.

United had offered the wages De Gea wanted but Mendes reportedly kept trying to add extra clauses and bonuses.

So when then-executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward saw De Gea at Carrington and asked what else he wanted, the goalkeeper was unsure what Woodward meant.

They went to his office and De Gea looked over the contract offer for himself – then signed it the very next day.

The intermediary listed on the FA documentation is Jose Bouzas Aragon, De Gea’s family lawyer, and there is no mention of Mendes.

De Gea and Mendes – who includes Cristiano Ronaldo, Darwin Nunez, and Bernardo Silva on his long list of clients – have not worked together since.

Man Utd could be my last club – De Gea

Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea has declared his intention to remain at the club for many more years.

De Gea is yet to hold any discussions over a new contract, but is ready to commit for the long-term once again. His current deal expires next June.

“I didn’t talk with anyone yet but of course, I would be really happy to be here for as long as they want because I want to be here for more years,” he said.

Asked if he could finish his career at the club, De Gea said: “Yeah, if it’s possible, of course. If they let me stay here I will stay here, for sure. I’m really comfortable, really happy and hopefully, before I leave we can win something.”

He added: “I think every time I’ve been in this club the guy who is on the bench wants to play, he wants to be No.1. I always push myself, it doesn’t matter who is on the bench or wants to be in my job, I just give my best all the time and try 100%,”

EPL: Now I get homesick in Spain – De Gea

Manchester United veteran David De Gea has opened up on the challenges of playing win the Premier League early in his career.

The Spaniard joined United as a 20-year-old and has since gone on to make 487 appearances for the club.

Now 31, De Gea has explained how difficult it was adapting to life in England.

“I was 19-20 [when I moved to Manchester] and I came with my mum and dad so my English was really bad at the beginning,” De Gea told United Daily. “It was very tough for me.

“Everything was different to when I was in Spain – different people and better players here so it was tough at the beginning.

“Step by step I was learning my English, talking more with the players and now that I am here it is like my home.”

And De Gea revealed he even misses Manchester when he returns to Spain.

“It is like my proper home now,” he added.

“Even when I am in Madrid for holidays or something, I am missing my house and people here. It is great to be here and to be a part of the history of this club is amazing and it is a privilege to be here.”

Qatar 2022: Enrique confirms De Gea out of World Cup plans

Spain boss Luis Enrique has admitted Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea is out of his World Cup plans.

De Gea’s domestic form hasn’t been enough to earn him a place in Enrique’s side, with the former Barcelona boss instead siding with Athletic Bilbao keeper Unai Simon as his number one. The Spain manager curiously does side with a couple of Premier League options as back-up though, with Brentford’s David Raya and Brighton Robert Sanchez in his squad.

Enrique has now suggested the decision is down to De Gea’s distribution, as well as his ability under the high ball. The 52-year-old also suggested his current trio of goalkeepers now sit ahead of the United stopper in the pecking order for the national team.

“I look to have three starting goalkeepers and I think that right now I have them,” Enrique said. “Honestly. I wouldn’t have an issue with any of the three of them starting.

“Unai has accumulated some interesting experience. A goalkeeper should start the play and generate the first superiority, they must dominate the aerial play.

“I need a goalkeeper that transmits peace and calmness to me, that doesn’t mean they won’t make mistakes, errors are part of football. What they generate I like a lot.”

EPL: De Gea slams Man Utd for Everton defeat

Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea has slammed his teammates after their defeat at Everton on Saturday.

Anthony Gordon struck the only goal of the game in the opening minutes.

De Gea later said: “We knew before today they were struggling and how difficult it was going to be.

“We don’t score, we don’t even create proper chances to score. I don’t know what to say, to be honest. We’re not good enough, that’s for sure. It’s going to be very difficult now to be in the top four.

“Of course it’s not the perfect atmosphere. They were tired, they were nervous, but they keep going and keep fighting. They had more desire than us, which is not acceptable. It’s very sad to lose today.”

  • EPL: Someone has put a curse on Man Utd, says De Gea

EPL: Someone has put a curse on Man Utd, says De Gea

Manchester United goalkeeper, David de Gea believes someone has put a “curse” on Red Devils as the team is yet to find balance in recent years.

United haven’t won a trophy since 2017, with the club lagging behind the likes of Manchester City, Liverpool and Chelsea at the top of English football.

De Gea has been at the club since 2011, having played under Sir Alex Ferguson during the manager’s final two years, and the goalkeeper says he can’t quite put his finger on what’s gone wrong under the legendary manager’s successors.

“I think someone has put a curse on us or something,” De Gea told El Pais. “The truth is I don’t know what’s going on, I really don’t.

“People always ask me and we talk about it as team-mates and we just say ‘we don’t know what’s happening’.

“We should have competed for more trophies, bigger titles, but I just don’t know why this team doesn’t function.”

De Gea misses penalty as Villarreal lift Europa League trophy

Goalkeeper David de Gea saw his penalty saved in an epic shootout as Villarreal beat Manchester United to win the Europa League in Gdansk.

Edinson Cavani had canceled out Gerard Moreno’s opening goal before 9,500 fans, sitting in the stands of the stadium in the Polish city.

Manchester United made a strong start to press high and forced “El Submarino Amarillo” to play defensively in the beginning period.

Villarreal’s goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli saved Marcus Rashford’s effort from distance, while Edinson Cavani could not tap in after a stunning pass by Mason Greenwood found him in the penalty area.

Instead of shooting, Cavani tried to pass to Rashford and he missed a perfect chance to break the deadlock.

The “Red Devils” soon paid a huge price for their ineffectiveness.

The team coached by Unai Emery woke up and tried to take the initiative to threaten De Gea.

Gerard Moreno found the net with 29 minutes on the clock.

Dani Parejo lifted in a free-kick, while Eric Bailly and Victor Lindelof were not able to stop Moreno.

He beat David de Gea from close range by arrowing the ball into the near post, and Villarreal only needed just one shot on target to lead 1-0 after the first half.

However, Manchester responded just after the break.

Scott McTominay’s shot was deflected over the bar by Torres, but in the 55th minute, Cavani showed ruthlessness.

Luke Shaw found Rashford from a corner-kick before the England striker hammered a dangerous shot.

After three ricochets, the ball landed in the path of Cavani who made no mistake.

The team from Old Trafford continued the momentum to try to give Ole Gunnar Solskjaer his first trophy as Manchester United manager.

It seemed at a time the “Red Devils” were close to breaking Villarreal’s record, who won 11 games and drew just one in the Europe League campaign.

Manchester kept the ball in Villarreal’s half to create more chances.

But they created one chance only in the 71st minute, when Pau Torres made a crucial block to stop Cavani’s header after a fast attack by Luke Shaw from the left.

As it turned out, neither Manchester nor Villarreal found a decider in 90 minutes or in extra time and the penalty kicks shootout had to be the decider.

Ten consecutive penalties were scored before goalkeeper Rulli became the hero for Villarreal.

The Argentinian beat De Gea and then saved the Spaniard’s effort to lead his team to the trophy.

EPL: Man Utd ready to sell one from De Gea or Henderson

Manchester manager boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is prepared to sell one of his two senior goalkeepers.

The Sun says United are set to move either David de Gea or Dean Henderson on this summer.

The battle between de Gea, 30, and Henderson, 23, has become a problem behind the scenes and United are eager for one of them to leave either permanently or on loan.

Henderson, who had two loan spells at Sheffield United, is determined to play regularly for Solskjaer’s side, especially as he wants to earn further recognition for England, for whom he has one cap so far.

In a recent meeting Henderson was reportedly informed that only one of him and de Gea will still be at United next season.

De Gea’s contract runs until the summer of 2023, while Henderson has over four years remaining on his deal.

Man Utd players want Pogba sold, De Gea dropped

Manchester United players want to see Paul Pogba sold.

The Manchester Evening News says several players believe manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is too easy on certain individuals.

A number of United players feel Solskjaer is to blame for their variable form this season and it has become an ‘easy ride’ playing for the club.

The feeling within the squad is United would benefit from key changes in personnel – specifically, the probable sale of Paul Pogba. Pogba remains such a popular figure at United he is still regarded as their best player by teammates but his close friends at the club are understanding of his desire to leave.

A number of players also believe Dean Henderson is deserving of a run in the side following David de Gea’s latest slump in form. Henderson, 23, has impressed colleagues with his performances in training and made his full Premier League debut for United in the weekend win over West Ham.
