UCL: Paul Scholes blasts De Gea for Man Utd exit

Manchester United legend Paul Scholes was furious with David De Gea after the team exited the Champions League.

De Gea failed to come for a cross that led to Leipzig’s third goal in a 3-2 win.

They had gone 3-0 up at that stage, before United scored two late goals and attempted a rally to score the equalizer.

United had only needed a draw from the game to qualify for the knockout rounds.

Scholes said on BT Sport about the third goal: “De Gea, here. He bottles it, doesn’t he?

“He’s scared of getting himself hurt.

“It should never go across the box like that, Harry Maguire looks wooden, he’s very stiff.

“De Gea, as a goalkeeper you make yourself as big as possible.

“You might get smashed in the face and you might get hurt.

    “He actually makes himself smaller.

“For such an experienced goalkeeper, it’s criminal.”

Man Utd must replace De Gea with Henderson – Shearer

Alan Shearer believes now is the time for Dean Henderson to replace David de Gea at Manchester United.

The Spaniard continued his poor campaign with two blunders in the 3-1 loss to Chelsea in the FA Cup semi-final on Sunday.

Henderson will return from a loan spell with Sheffield United this summer, and Shearer thinks he should be Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s first choice.

“If the goalkeeper makes one mistake, or possibly two, you think you should stick with him,” he said on BBC. “But it keeps happening.

“I think you only bring Dean Henderson back to Manchester United as the number one, or you keep him where he is to keep gaining experience. I think that time has come.”

  • De Gea’s howler gifts Chelsea point at Old Trafford

David de Gea made a third costly goalkeeping error in the space of four games as Manchester United were held to a 1-1 draw at home to top-four rivals Chelsea last night.

Juan Mata had given United a deserved first-half lead against his former employers in what had been dubbed a “must-win” match for the hosts, but De Gea’s mistake gifted an equaliser to Marcos Alonso as Chelsea boosted their hopes of Champions League qualification.

The result leaves Maurizio Sarri’s side still fourth in the table and two points above fifth-placed Arsenal, whereas United must overhaul a three-point deficit as well as their inferior goal difference during the final two games of the season.

The importance of the game was increased by defeats for Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal earlier in the weekend, and United in particular began like a team who knew their top-four hopes depended on winning.

The hosts created their first big chance after just four minutes when Luke Shaw’s long pass forward beat the entire Chelsea defence to leave Romelu Lukaku through on goal, but the Belgian took too long over his finish and was eventually denied by Kepa Arrizabalaga.

United would not have to wait long to break the deadlock, though, as Mata marked his 31st birthday with a goal against his former club after a scooped Lukaku pass had released Shaw, who cut the ball back into the middle for Mata to convert.

Chelsea were largely limited to long-range efforts for much of the first half, with Alonso and Jorginho failing to test David de Gea when trying their luck.

De Gea would go on to fail the first test which came his way from another long-range strike, but United almost doubled their advantage before that when Eric Bailly came close to marking his return to the team with a goal, sending a towering header just wide on the half-hour mark.

A two-goal lead would not have flattered a United side who were putting in one of their best performances in recent weeks, but they then found themselves level with just two minutes remaining of the half as De Gea made another howler to gift Chelsea an equaliser.

Antonio Rudiger’s 30-yard strike should have been simple for the keeper, but he spilled it into a dangerous area and Alonso was following up to convert the rebound – a third error leading directly to a goal from De Gea’s last four games, which is as many as he committed in his previous 123 outings for the club.

Kepa Arrizabalaga showed his compatriot how it should be done when collecting a long-range Marcus Rashford free kick five minutes into the second half, and the Chelsea keeper was called upon again shortly afterwards to keep out Bailly’s tame effort.

Manchester United’s David De Gea won his first Premier League golden glove after recording 18 clean sheets during the season.

The Spaniard was rested for United’s final game of the season against Watford, but had already established an unassailable lead in the standings.

Manchester City’s Ederson finished in second spot with 16 clean sheets in his first season in England.

Tottenham’s Hugo Lloris and Chelsea’s Thibaut Courtois both nothced up 15 shut outs, while Burnley’s Nick Pope and Arsenal’s Petr Cech were next on the list with 11.

  • Manchester Derby:In-form United can halt City charge, says De Gea

In-form Manchester United have the confidence and ability to end Premier League leaders Manchester City’s winning run, the hosts’ goalkeeper David de Gea said ahead of Sunday’s match at Old Trafford.

City could break the record for the most consecutive Premier League victories in a single season by winning their 14th game at United and their unbeaten start has opened an eight-point lead at the top of the table.

United are unbeaten in their last 40 home games across all competitions and have lost only twice in the league this season to stay in touch with their neighbours.

In an interview with Sky Sports, asked if United could stop City, De Gea turned the question around.

“Can City stop United? We play at home with the fans,” the Spaniard said.

“It’s a derby, we have confidence, we feel really strong and we want to win.

“The team is in a good moment, we won two difficult away games so we have confidence and we know we play an important game. We really want to win.”

United defender Marcos Rojo believes both teams are well matched.

“The two teams are equal and both in good form, so it’s going to come down to who wants it the most and that concentration throughout the game,” Rojo told the club’s website. (www.manutd.com)

City have won five of the last 10 Manchester derbies in the league, with United winning three and the other two ending in goalless draws.
