  • SAD: 53 bodies recovered, over 1,000 missing at Hawaii wildfires

SAD: 53 bodies recovered, over 1,000 missing at Hawaii wildfires

No fewer than 53 people have now been killed by the Lahaina fire, Maui County said in a statement Thursday.

“As firefighting efforts continue, 17 additional fatalities have been confirmed today amid the active Lahaina fire. This brings the death toll to 53 people,” the statement said.

Asked about differing estimates on the total number of dead, Maui Police Chief John Pelletier said: “We’ve recovered 53 people.”

“That means the confirmed death toll in Lahaina remains at 53, as the county declared earlier.

“If the mayor or myself do not give you that number, it’s not accurate. We’re going to take our time we’re going to do it right.

“I do not know what the final number is going to be. It’s going to be horrible and tragic,” he said.

The police chief said authorities don’t know exactly how many are missing but he thinks it is approximately about 1,000 people.

“That doesn’t mean that’s how many… that have passed,” John Pelletier said, adding that many could be in shelters or just unable to be contacted.

Power and internet are down for many across the island, which is complicating efforts to locate people.

Hawaii Governor, Josh Green described the impact of the wildfires in Maui as likely the “largest natural disaster in Hawaii’s state history,” during a news conference Thursday.

“What we’ve seen today has been catastrophic,” he said.

Green said that there will be a big team effort to “bring our state back.

“We are seeing a loss of life here. As you know, the number has been rising, and we will continue to see the loss of life,” the governor said, adding that “many hundreds of homes” have been destroyed.

“That’s going to take a great deal of time to recover from. But that’s why we come together. We come together to give comfort to people,” he said.

Hawaii has experienced wildfires before, but none like this.

On the impact of climate change in the state and how its government and residents can respond in the future, Green said, “We’ve never experienced a wildfire that affected a city like this before.”

He mentioned the state has been impacted by wildfires previously but largely in open spaces.

It was a “shock,” he said, to see the effects of Hurricane Dora — in particular, the trade winds that blow across Hawaii — affect the state in such a manner from hundreds of miles away.

“I think we’re seeing this in many different parts of the world, fires from California to Colorado.

“It is difficult now in a time where global warming is combined with strengthening storms and drought,” he said and vowed that the state would do whatever it could in its power to better anticipate such disasters.

“The devastating damage caused by the wildfires in Maui will take many years and billions of dollars to repair and rebuild.

“It will take time to know the full extent, but it will be in the billions of dollars, without a doubt. We’re first focused on lives lost, that’s why we are so heartbroken,” he said.

The governor added: “To give perspective, it is going to take many years to rebuild Lahaina,” noting that the full extent of the damage “will shock you.”

According to Green, thousands of people in Hawaii will need to be housed after unprecedented wildfires ravaged the island this week, while also adding that it is the state’s intent to initially seek 2,000 rooms to accommodate housing needs.

“That will mean reaching out to all of our hotels and those in the community,” he said.

He called on residents across the state with extra rooms in their homes to offer them to those in need.

SHOCKING! Missing bizman’s body found in freezer with chainsaw, hedge clippers

The dismembered body of a missing German businessman was found in a freezer inside a house in southern Thailand.

This isncident was confirmed by the Thai police in a report published by the CBS News on Tuesday.

Tawee Kudthalaeng, the police chief in the town of Nong Prue, said the body of 62-year-old Hans-Peter Mack was discovered at about 11 p.m. Monday. Mack had been missing since July 4, the Bangkok Post reported.

Investigators located his body by using security camera videos from the area, Tawee said. He did not elaborate, but photos and video published by Thai media showed the freezer in the bed of a black truck with a man squatting next to it.

Mack was last seen driving his Mercedes sedan in Pattaya, a coastal city in southern Thailand, according to a missing person announcement distributed by his family that offered a reward of 3 million baht ($86,000) for information leading to his return.

Crowds gathered outside the gates of the house where his body was discovered and watched as forensic teams in white coveralls, hair nets and blue gloves pored over the scene.

Video broadcast on Thai PBS television showed experts inside the dwelling going through a garbage bag taken from a large white freezer. They pulled out a Makita cordless chainsaw and charging unit, a pair of yellow-handled hedge clippers and two large rolls of plastic.

The bag was taken out of the home, followed by a body covered with a plastic sheet on a stretcher and the freezer.

Mack lived in Pattaya with his Thai wife and worked as a real estate broker, according to local media reports. He had been a resident of Thailand for at least several years.

According to Thai PBS, his wife said that on the day he went missing, she was supposed to have lunch with Mack, but he didn’t show up.

She tried calling him, the station reported, and a text message was later sent to her mobile phone, claiming he would call back. At about 10pm that night, she said she received another text from Mack’s phone saying he was still with a client, according to the station. However, she said he had never texted her before in their five-year-relationship, Thai PBS reported.

His Mercedes E350 was found Sunday in the parking lot of a condominium in Nong Prue, an upscale settlement popular with foreigners northeast of Pattaya in Chonburi province.

According to police, there were traces of what appeared to be a cleaning solvent on the seats, dashboard, steering wheel and other areas of the car.

“There was intention to destroy evidence and the case indicates that Mr. Hans-Peter Ralter Mack’s disappearance was suspicious,” Police Major General Theerachai Chamnanmor said, according to the Bangkok Post.

Tawee said police determined that a large amount of money was missing from Mack’s bank account, which they suspect is linked to the slaying. The police chief refused to elaborate but said investigators were looking into several suspects, both German nationals and Thai.

The German Embassy in Bangkok referred all queries to the German Foreign Ministry in Berlin, which said it was aware of the case of a missing German citizen and that officials were in contact with the man’s relatives and Thai authorities. It said it could not give further details for privacy reasons.

The telephone number listed on the missing person poster went unanswered Tuesday.

SAD! Man dies cutting grass after slicing his p3nis with strimmer blade

A bloke died cutting the grass as a strimmer blade flew off and severed his penis, causing severe blood loss, it has been reported.

The Thai man had been tending to a patch of grass at a forest park in the Isaan province of Nong Bua Lamphu when the freak accident happened, Thaiger reported.

The blade, police said, was actually meant for cutting metal, and not grass, probably making his injuries a lot worse. It was covered in blood when retrieved from the scene.
The rescue team removed the victim’s trousers to determine the cause of death, finding that his manhood had been severed and that he also sustained a deep wound to his groin.

It transpired that Praditsin had been hired to tend to the grass in the forest park and the day of his death, June 28, was supposed to be his last day.
