    BREAKING: Nollywood actor Ernest Asuzu is dead

    Veteran Nigerian actor, Ernest Asuzu is dead.

    According to reports, the actor who went viral last year after he was spotted begging for alms on the street of Lagos died in the early hours of Wednesday.

    The cause of his death was not disclosed as at the time of going to press.

    Ernest Asuzu began his acting career in the ’90s and rose to prominence after he starred in the 1997 Nollywood classic, ‘Rituals’

    He was the toast of Nollywood until his career nosedived after he came down with a stroke in 2015 and it affected his speech. He was also bedridden for three years.

    In 2015, he announced that Jeremiah Funfeyin of Mercyland Deliverance Ministry healed him of stroke.

    The cleric reportedly gave him a new SUV valued at about N3.5m and N1.5m as startup capital to help revive his career. For eight years, he battled depression and was rumoured dead at some point.

    Sad! Dan Nkoloagu is dead

    Popular veteran actor, Dan Nkoloagu is dead.

    Dan Nkoloagu Jnr., his son, broke the tragic news in a statement issued via his Facebook page on Saturday.

    Though his son, didn’t reveal the cause of the actor’s death, it was said that he breathed his last on Friday.

    “It was a Black Friday for us yesterday as my dad left us without saying goodbye,” the bereaved son wrote.

    Nkoloagu starred in movies like ‘Okada Man’, ‘Warriors Heart’, ‘My Vision’, ‘Midwife, ‘Royal Doom’, ‘Alice My First Lady’, ‘Moment of Tears’, ’40 Days and 40 Nights’, among many others. He was 83.

    JUST IN: NIS DG, Dadi-Mamud, dies at 53

    The sports fraternity has again been thrown into mourning as the Director of Nigeria’s foremost National Institute for Sports (NISports), Dr John Dadi-Mamud, was confirmed dead on Sunday in Lagos.

    53-years old Dadi-Mamud, a sports administrator and teacher at the NISports, showed no sign of sickness prior to the announcement of his untimely death.

    Confirming the news of Dadi-Mamud’s demise, the NISports Registrar, Musibau Adeneye, with a tone dull of grief, said his death was unfortunate.

    “His death came as a rude shock because he showed no sign of illness as at the last Thursday he presided over a management meeting.

    “He was dear to all of us at the institute and a father-like figure to the students as well. He will be sorely missed by everyone. This is a sad day,” he lamented.

    Reacting, the Chairman, Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Lagos Chapter, Debo Oshundun, spared no emotion in describing the untimely passage of the sports enigma whom, he described as a through bred professional.

    “This is a rude shock to all of us all in sports family, coming at a time when we are still mourning the death of another sports icon, Joe Erico, who died late last week.

    “Here we are mourning the departure of another of our own, this of course is a trying moment for the sports fraternity in general.

    “Dadi-Mamud was a known person to me, I had a close relationship with him since I was a postgraduate student at the institute,” Oshundun said.

    “He was my lecturer during my post-graduate course.

    “Dadi was loved by everyone and he was appointed the Director in the twilight of the last Sports Minister, Solomon Dalong.

    “He was a through bred professional who rose through the ranks.”

    Oshundun prayed for the repose of the soul of the departed sports icon.

    Kidnapped Taraba LG chair, Salihu Dovo found dead

    The Chairman of Ardo-Kola Local Government Council in Taraba State, Salihu Dovo, has been killed by his abductors.

    Dovo was kidnapped by gunmen at his Jalingo residence in the early hours of Sunday.

    According reports, the kidnappers called an official of the local government few hours after his abduction to announce the killing of the council chairman.

    The Taraba Police Public Relations Officer, ASP David Misal, who confirmed the death of the council chairman, said the armed men stormed the residence of the local government chairman at the Sabon Gari area of the state capital around 1am on Sunday and took him away.

    Misal said the gunmen took the council chairman to River Lamurde where they killed him and later called that his people should go and look for his body in the bush around the area.

    Misal, who said a search team which later found the body was dispatched, however, could not confirm whether it was a case of assassination or kidnapping gone wrong.

    The PPRO also said the corpse of the council chairman had been deposited at the morgue of the Federal Medical Centre in Jalingo.

    Just in: Ex-IGP Gambo Jimeta is dead, Buhari mourns

    President Muhammadu Buhari has expressed sadness over the death of Muhammadu Gambo Jimeta, a one-time Inspector General of Police.

    Gambo Jimeta died Thursday evening. He was 83 years old.

    He was born in Jimeta on 15 April 1937 and served as IGP between 1986 and 1990, when he was succeeded by Aliyu Attah.

    Conveying the condolences of his family and that of the government and people of Nigeria, the President described the late crack police detective as “a man of great courage, intellect and a true Nigerian Statesman.”

    “Today, Nigeria lost a great son. He lived for the nation and served with all his strength,” Buhari said.

    “May Allah bless his soul and give fortitude to the bereaved family, the government and people of Adamawa State to bear this irreparable loss,” President Buhari prayed.

    In April 2018, the rumour mill was abuzz that the old super cop had died.

    But the rumour was thrashed as rumour by a family spokesman, Mubarak.

    Gambo as he was fondly called went to Jimeta Elementary School, 1947-49 and Yola Middle School, 1950-55 for his early education.

    He thereafter went to Bauchi Provincial Secondary school, 1956-58, Government College, Keffi, 1958-59, before attending Nigeria Police College, Kaduna in 1959 and Police College, Ikeja, also the same year.

    He also went to Detective Training School, Wakefield, UK, 1962, Bramhill Police College, UK, 1963, International Police Academy, Washington DC, USA, 1980 and National Police Academy, Cairo, Egypt, Wolfson College.

    After leaving the police college, Gambo began his career as a Cadet sub-Inspector.

    In 1963, he was promoted Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP). He became a DSP in 1967 and full superintendent in 1969.

    In 1972, he was promoted Chief Superintendent of Police 1972 and assistant Commissioner of Police in 1974.

    He became Commissioner of Police in 1977 and served in Lagos, where he cut national fame, as a crack police officer, dealing with robberies in the state.

    In 1982, he was promoted AIG and transferred to Force Criminal Investigation Division, Alagbon Close, Lagos.

    He became a DIG in 1984 and Inspector General of Police in 1986.

    Seven Nigerians killed by Covid-19 in single day, 1,598 others infected

    The Nigerian Centre for Disease Control, NCDC, reports 1,598 new cases and seven deaths in Nigeria on Saturday, with Lagos posting 461 fresh cases.

    There is however, a drop in infections compared to what the nation reported on Friday, which stood at 1,867 cases, the highest so far in a single day.

    Lagos also recorded substantial drop in cases, with its 461 new infections far lesser than the 713 cases reported the previous day.

    Abuja’s 206 new cases on Saturday represented a slight increase compared to the 199 cases posted the previous day.

    Plateau recorded a drop in infections, posting 197 fresh cases. It posted 273 cases the previous day.

    While Rivers raked in 168 cases, Kaduna recorded 116 cases.

    Others are: Anambra-53, Ogun-49, Ebonyi-47, Edo-42, Sokoto-32, Imo-31, Katsina-31, Oyo-30, Akwa Ibom-27, Delta-16, Kano-16, Abia-15, Niger-15, Ondo-11, Bayelsa-10, Borno-9, Kebbi-8, Ekiti-7 and Jigawa-1.

    This brings total confirmed COVID-19 cases in Nigeria to 108,943, with 85,367 survivors discharged and 1,420 deaths recorded.

    New cases were reported in 23 States and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

    Sad! Sister of late Nollywood star, Orisabunmi dies two days after brother’s death

    Mrs. Janet Ademola, the younger sister of late popular Yoruba actress Mrs. Folake Aremu, widely known as Orisabunmi, is dead.

    News of the demise of Janet was broken and confirmed on Saturday by Gbenga Onisola, her nephew.

    Janet, who is the last child of the family, died three days after the death of Orisabunmi and two days after the death of her brother.

    Orisabunmi’s immediate elder brother, Steve Onisola, died on Thursday, barely 24hours after the death of the popular actress.

    Onisola, the Technical Director of Kwara Falcons Basketball Club, Ilorin, was said to have passed on after a brief illness.

    Coach Steve Onishola, the Technical Director of Kwara Falcons Basketball Club of Ilorin, is dead.

    Onishola died barely 24 hours after his younger sister, Folake Aremu, a Nollywood actress, popularly called Orisabunmi, died at 60.

    The State Chairman of the association, Dr. Joseph Adeyemo, confirmed the death in Ilorin on Thursday.

    The late basketball coach was said to have passed on at 71 on Thursday in Illorin, following a brief illness.

    The deceased was the Manager of Falcons on different occasions before he was appointed the club’s technical director.

    He was part of the Falcons’ team that secured promotion for the club to the elite division in 2013.

    He was also a member of the Silver-winning team at the 2018 edition of the Kwese Premier League.

    Onishola was also among the first set to coach the club, which was founded between the late 1970s and 1980s.
    He was a member of the Board of Kwara Basketball Association before his death.

    “We are very sad by this unfortunate incident. In fact, we can’t find the right word to describe this moment.

    “Coach Onishola was the symbol of basketball in Kwara, he was one of the most brilliant coaches of the game in Nigeria.

    “The entire basketball family extends its deepest condolences to the deceased’s family and loved ones,” Adeyemo said.

    Veteran Yoruba actress Folake Aremu, popularly known as Orisabunmi, has died.

    She died at the age of 60.

    A senior TAMPAN member Tunde Ola-Yusuff announced the death in a Facebook post.

    “She left without a goodbye. The sudden death of Mrs Folake Aremu (ORISABUNMI) has been announced.

    “Really a shock on everyone. Iya Oosa, may God rest your Soul among the righteous,” Ola Yusuff wrote.

    Orisabunmi was married to another actor Jimoh Aliu, popularly known as Aworo

    Three brothers arrested for murder in Ogun

    Three brothers, Okiki Mulero 23, Micheal Mulero 21, and Joseph Mulero 17, have been arrested by men of Ogun State Police Command for killing a security guard on duty.

    The suspects reportedly committed the offense on Friday, December 25, 2020, by beating to death a So-Safe corps officer who was on guard duty at OGD Estate Asero, Abeokuta.

    The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, DSP Abimbola Oyeyemi, disclosed this in a statement on Monday.

    Oyeyemi said trouble started when one of the suspects, Okiki Mulero, a commercial cyclist was denied entrance into the estate for carrying more than one passenger contrary to the rule of the estate.

    The PPRO said “this infuriated him and he called his two brothers, Micheal and Joseph Mulero, who came to the scene and they jointly attacked the two security guards with planks.

    “In the process, one of the security men by the name Segun Godfrey Barde was hit with a plank and he slumped.

    “He was subsequently rushed to O&A hospital where he gave up the ghost on Friday 25th of December 2020 while receiving treatment.”

    Oyeyemi explained that the case was reported at Obantoko divisional headquarters by the executive of the Community Development Association of the estate.

    He said the DPO, CSP Sunday Opebiyi, directed his detectives to go after the suspects who were apprehended one after the other.

    He said they have all confessed to the commission of the crime.

    The Commissioner of Police, Edward Ajogun has ordered the immediate transfers of the case to the homicide section of the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department for further investigation and prosecution.

    He added that the corpse of the victims has been deposited in the mortuary for post mortem examination.
