Renowned British actress Barbara Shelley dies at 88

Famous British actress, Barbara Shelley, known as an icon of early horror films and hailed as the ‘technicolour queen of Hammer’ has died at the age of 88.

Her agent, Thomas Bowington, confirmed the news on Monday, saying that while she had recently caught Covid-19 in a hospital, she had recovered, Metro.co.uk reports.

He said, “She really was Hammer’s number one leading lady and the technicolour queen of Hammer. On-screen she could be quietly evil. She goes from statuesque beauty to just animalistic wildness. She was a regular favourite of Hammer events and autograph shows but also performed on stage with the RSC. It wasn’t the Covid that took her, she had underlying issues.”

According to Bowington, Shelley went into a hospital for a muscle check-up and in that process, she contracted Covid-19.

He explained, “But after that, she had an infection and was in hospital by herself for two weeks before Christmas. It’s most likely Covid is going to come up on the death certificate.”

The London-born actress was the star of 1950s and 1960s Hammer Horror films including The Gorgon, opposite Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee; Dracula, Prince Of Darkness and Rasputin, The Mad Monk, both also starring Lee; and Quatermass And The Pit, as well as Blood Of The Vampire, and Village Of The Damned.

Shelley also appeared in the Doctor Who episode Planet Of Fire, starring Peter Davison as the fifth Doctor.

The star – who was born Barbra Kowin in 1932 – was also known for TV roles in series including The Saint, The Avengers, The Borgias, Blake’s 7 and Crown Court, and later played Hester Samuels in EastEnders.

In 2010, writer and actor Mark Gatiss interviewed Shelley about her career at Hammer Films for his BBC documentary series A History Of Horror.

The London-based production company, founded in 1934, made a string of hit Gothic horror films from the mid-1950s until the 1970s. Many of these involved classic horror characters such as Baron Victor Frankenstein, Count Dracula, and The Mummy.

Tributes came in for the star, with Hammer Horror Films tweeting: “I’ am sad to relay that one of the greatest Hammer stars Barabara Shelley has passed away after a Covid battle. She would have been 89 next month.”

Former French president Valery Giscard d’Estaing died late Wednesday “surrounded by his family” at his estate in central France, his close circle told AFP.

Giscard had been in hospital several times in the last months for heart problems. He made one of his last public appearances on September 30 last year for the funeral of another former president, Jacques Chirac, who had been his prime minister.

Giscard d’Estaing was a lifelong politician, serving in the cabinets of French Prime Ministers Jacques Chaban-Delmas and Pierre Messmer and later as minister of finance and economic affairs under President Charles de Gaulle and President Georges Pompidou.

Giscard d’Estaing was elected president at the age of 48 in 1974, narrowly defeating socialist François Mitterand during a time of cultural modernization and economic upheaval. He was the youngest president of the Fifth Republic, a record that would stand until the election of President Emmanuel Macron in 2017 at the age of 39.

Sad! Bobby Brown’s 28-year-old son found dead

Bobby Brown Jr., the 28-year-old son of Bobby Brown, a popular US singer, has been found dead in Los Angeles.

According to TMZ, a source who broke the news said his unconscious body was found in his home on Wednesday.

The source was quoted as saying that the sad incident is being investigated by the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD).

Though no cause of death has been revealed, police do not believe there was foul play involved.

Jeff Lee, an LAPD spokesman, said they had responded to a medical emergency at about 1:50 pm on the 5200 block of White Oak Avenue in Encino.

“Upon officers’ arrival, there was a person down at the location,” Lee was quoted by LA Times as saying. He added that the deceased was pronounced dead as the investigators found no evidence that any foul play was involved.

Bobby Jr. is the second child the 51-year-old R&B singer will be losing in recent years.

In 2015, Brown had lost Bobbi Kristina, his daughter with Whitney Houston, his ex-wife, who was found unconscious in a bathtub at the age of 22.

The cause of death was found to be lobar pneumonia due to “immersion of face in water complicating mixed drug intoxication” after an autopsy.

Houston, the singer who was married to Brown until 2007, died on February 11, 2012, from an accidental overdose while in a bathtub at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.
