    Nigeria records second lowest Covid-19 infections figure since June, 950 persons dead

    Nigeria on Monday recorded 290 new coronavirus infections, the second-lowest daily figure since June 8.

    Five deaths were recorded in the last 24 hours, pushing the total number of deaths to 950.

    Monday’s figure is slightly higher than the 288 daily cases recorded exactly one week ago.

    Nigeria has continued to record cases below 500 for the past two weeks, a sign that the country’s epidemiological curve is heading downwards.

    The latest figure brings the total number of infections in the country to 46,867, according to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC).

    The NCDC in its daily update of the infection on its Twitter handle @NCDCgov said out of a total 46,867 infected persons so far, more than 33,000 have recovered and have been discharged after treatment in the country’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

    The 290 new cases were reported from 16 states- Lagos (82), Plateau (82), Oyo (19), FCT (18), Edo (16), Kaduna (15), Enugu (9), Ogun (9), Kano (8), Kwara (8), Cross River (5), Ondo (5), Rivers (5), Ekiti (4), Imo (3) and Borno (2).

    Lagos is the hardest-hit state with about a third of Nigeria’s cases (over 15, 000) recorded in the country’s commercial capital.

    The second most affected place in Nigeria is Abuja, the capital city, with more than 4,000 cases.

    The former manager of the defunct music group, P-Square, died today, Saturday, August 8, 2020.

    A source close to the family revealed that Howie-T had been battling with stroke for about four years.

    Howie T was a seasoned concert promoter and the CEO of Kiss Events.

     

    From his hey days as a talented time disc jockey, rocking fun-lovers at Enter the dragon (western house, Lagos), Sunrise nite club (Victoria island, Lagos), Club Towers (Victoria island, Lagos) to when he became general manager at Ibinabo Fiberesima’s Pyramid nite club, Howie T’s contributions to the Nigerian music industry will remain indelible.

    BREAKING: Buruji Kashamu is dead

    Former Senator and prominent member of the Peoples Democratic Party in the South West, Buruji Kashamu, is dead.

     

    He died today at First Cardiology Consultants hospital in Lagos.

     

     

    The deceased friend, Ben Murray-Bruce, announced his death on his Twitter page

     

    “‪I have just lost my good friend of forever to #COVID19. Until his death, Sen. Buruji Kashamu and I were inseparable. He died today at First Cardiology Consultants, in Lagos.

     

    “May his gentle soul rest in peace. I pray his family and loved ones the fortitude to bear this heavy loss,” Mr Murray-Bruce posted.

     

     

  • BREAKING: Ex-Ogun Senator, Buruji Kasamu dies of COVID-19

    Confirmed reports reaching TheNewsGuru.com.com, TNG has it that former Senator representing Ogun East in the 8th National Assembly, Buruji Kasamu is dead.

    TNG reports that the former Nigerian lawmaker died of COVID-19 on Saturday (today) at the First Cardiology Consultants in Lagos.

    He was aged 62.

    His colleague at the 8th Assembly, Senator Ben Murray-Bruce confirmed his death on Saturday evening.

     

    He was a chieftain of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP in Ogun State. He was appointed as the chairman, Organization and Mobilization Committee of the PDP in the South West zone of Nigeria.

    In 2018, he was expelled from the People’s Democratic Party, a decision later voided by an Abuja High Court in October 2018.

    He was the 2019 Ogun State gubernatorial election candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party.

    Kashamu started his education at Ansarudeen Primary School, Ijebu Igbo and left in 1972 to complete his primary school education at St. John Modern School, Lagos. He then attended evening classes at Igbobi College while working as a licensing agent.

    He later went to London where he took courses in Business Management at Pitman College, London. He was awarded a Honourary PhD by the unaccredited, diploma-mill Cambridge Graduate University, located in Massachusetts, at a privately organised ceremony in Lagos, Nigeria.

    The All Progressives Congress (APC) Akwa Ibom State Chapter, has reacted to the death of its chairman, Hon. Ini Titus Okopido

    The party in a statement signed by its Deputy State Chairman, Dr. Ita Udosen, commiserated with the family of the deceased.

    The statement reads, ” On behalf of the leaders, elders, members and the various Organs of our Party, I regret to announce the passing away to the eternal glory of our dear State Chairman, Hon Ini Titus Okopido.

    He died in the early hours of today after a brief illness.

    Our hearts are heavy with grief as we mourn with his wife, children and family. This is a very painful death to the whole of the APC family in Akwa Ibom State in particular, and Nigeria as a whole.

    Our Chairman was a committed and dedicated progressive and Party loyalist whose ideals were inexorably tied to the philosophy of our great Party. He contributed immensely to the growth of the Party in the last two years he’s been Chairman.

    We call on our members to keep the family of our Chairman in prayers in this very difficult moment.

    As we mourn our beloved Chairman, we also remember the families of all our members who have also passed away recently.

    May their souls rest in peace.

    Over 30 dead, 3,000 others injured in Beirut explosion

    At least 25 people have died after a huge explosion in Beirut, while more than 2,500 have been injured, Lebanese health minister Hamad Hasan has said.

    Shocking videos from the scene show large plumes of thick smoke rising into the air near former Prime Minister Saad Hariri’s Downtown Beirut residence.

    One woman stated that all the buildings in her block had been ‘destroyed’, leaving ‘everyone covered in glass and blood’.

    The causes of the explosion is not yet clear, but local TV stations have said it came from Beirut’s port, inside an area where firecrackers are stored. Several videos appear to show smaller explosions going off in the minutes before the large blast.

    Lebanese Red Cross official Georges Kettaneh told AP there were ‘hundreds of casualties’ in the capital city, including dead and wounded.

    A Lebanese security source confirmed that several bodies had been moved from the area, while nearby hospitals have put a call out for blood donations as they are forced to treat people in the car park.

    Nigeria’s Covid-19 infections hit nears 42,000, eight dead in 24 Hours

    The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), on Tuesday night, announced 624 new cases of COVID-19, bringing the total number of infections in the West African nation to 41,804.

    Eight deaths were recorded from the virus in the past 24 hours pushing the total number of confirmed deaths from the virus to 868.

    According to the NCDC, out of a total of 41,804 infected persons so far, 18,764 have recovered and have been discharged after treatment in the country’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

    The new cases, according to the NCDC were found in the following 18 states: “Lagos-212 Oyo-69 Niger-49 Kano-37 Osun-37 FCT-35 Plateau-34 Gombe-33 Edo-28 Enugu-28 Ebonyi-17 Delta-10 Katsina-9 Ogun-8 Rivers-7 Ondo-5 Kaduna-4 Nasarawa-2.’”

    Lagos is still the state with the highest number of cases (14,848), about a third of the total.

    Nigeria is Africa’s third most impacted country behind South Africa and Egypt. The federal and state governments are working to increase testing as authorities stress that cases definitely far exceed the current tally.

    Late singer Nomoreloss’ wife, Phoenix Osinuga is dead

    Media personality, Adeola Osinuga, popularly known as Phoenix, is dead.

    The wife of late singer Nomoreloss passed on Friday, July 24, 2020, after a long battle with fribromyalgia, a disorder characterized by widespread musculoskeletal pain accompanied by fatigue, sleep, memory and mood issues.

    TheNewsGuru recalls that Phoenix lost her husband on March 21 2016. A year after, she went public with her struggle with fibromyalgia.

     

    Phoenix had shared the news with her Instagram followers back then,along with images of herself on a hospital bed. She wrote, “I can almost open my own pharmacy at this rate. Sometimes, you need painkillers for the pain caused by going to the hospital for painkillers. (Sigh) when I think about the amount of chocolates I could buy with this money instead of buying medicine.”

    Budding Yoruba actor, Yusuf Satia, is dead.

     

    The news of his demise was made known on Tuesday by fellow actor, Kunle Afod on his verified Instagram page.

     

    Afod on his page wrote, “So sad to hear this …RIP Yusuf Satia Is gone… Tried so much to see you this year and celebrate you but it was aborted.”

    The late Satia was more known for his role in the Yoruba movie titled, ‘Ijinle Pam Pam’.

     

    As at the time of filing this report the cause of Satia’s demise is yet to be known.

    JUST IN: Buhari’s close ally, Isa Funtua is dead

    Mallam Ismaila Isa Funtua, founding publisher of defunct Democrat Newspaper and former President of the Newspaper Proprietors Association of Nigeria (NPAN), is dead.

    He died of cardiac arrest Monday night in Abuja.

    TheNewsGuru.com TNG gathered that the late Funtua will be buried today in the Federal capital city according to Islamic rites.

    Funtua, a businessman and a close ally of President Muhammadu Buhari was chairman of Bulet Construction, which built the Federal Secretariat in Abuja.

    Despite closing his newspaper, he remained committed to the print media and a defender of media freedom.

    He was life patron of Newspaper’s Proprietors Association of Nigeria (NPAN).
