    Founding Managing Director of Democrat Newspaper and former President of the Newspaper Proprietors Association of Nigeria (NPAN), Mallam Ismaila Isa Funtua, is dead. He died of cardiac arrest Monday night.

    He was life patron of Newspaper’s Proprietors Association of Nigeria (NPAN) and Chairman of Bulet Construcion company.

    He will be buried according to Islamic rites Tuesday.

    20 dead in one day as Nigeria’s Covid-19 infections exceed 31,000

    Nigeria recorded 575 new cases of COVID-19 on Friday, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) said. This brings the total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Nigeria to 31,323.

    The death toll from the virus has hit 709, as 20 new deaths were reported on Friday. The fatality rate from the virus in Nigeria is about 2.2 per cent. Meanwhile, over one third of those infected (12,795) have recovered and have been discharged.

    The NCDC in a tweet said the new cases were reported in 18 states including Lagos, Oyo, FCT, Rivers, Kaduna, Edo, Enugu, Delta, Niger, Katsina, Ebonyi, Gombe, Jigawa, Plateau, Nassarawa, Borno, Kano, and Abia.

    All the reporting states already had at least a case of the virus.

    As of the time of reporting, all 36 states and the FCT have recorded at least a case of the disease.

    Lagos State remains the epicentre for the disease with the highest number of confirmed cases and deaths in the country, while Zamfara has not reported any new confirmed case in the past 53 days.

    The other five states with the highest number of confirmed cases are: FCT, Oyo, Edo, Delta and Rivers State.

    The 575 new cases were reported from 18 states: Lagos – 234, Oyo – 85, FCT – 68, Rivers – 49, Kaduna – 39, Edo – 31, Enugu – 30, Delta – 11, Niger – 10, Katsina – 9, Ebonyi – 5, Gombe – 3, Jigawa – 3, Plateau – 2, Nasarawa – 2, Borno – 2, Kano – 1, and Abia – 1.

    “Till date, 31,323 cases have been confirmed, 12795 cases have been discharged and 709 deaths have been recorded in 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory,” it stated.

    Since the outbreak of the disease in Nigeria in February, a total of 175,656 samples have been tested.

    NCDC said as of the time of reporting, there are 17,819 active cases of COVID-19 in the country, while 12,795 have recovered and have been discharged.

    Data from the health agency also indicates that the country is witnessing a high level of community transmission of the virus as 73 per cent of the total diagnosed cases reported unknown sources of exposure to the virus.

    Only 2 per cent of confirmed cases were detected in people with travel history and 25 per cent of confirmed cases are reported in persons who were contacted to those with travel history.

    According to NCDC, the predominant age-group affected is 31 to 40. Also, males are more infected than females in the ratio of 66 to 34 per cent.

    A breakdown of the 31,323 confirmed cases shows that Lagos State has so far reported 12, 051 cases, followed by FCT – 2,433, Oyo – 1,689, Edo – 1, 593, Delta – 1, 348, Rivers – 1,343, Kano – 1,303, Ogun – 1,063, Kaduna – 946, Katsina – 665, Ondo – 606, Borno – 586, Gombe – 527, Bauchi – 519, Ebonyi – 508, Plateau – 499, Enugu – 469, Abia – 402, Imo – 359, Jigawa – 321, Kwara – 311, Bayelsa – 299, Nasarawa – 238, Osun – 212, Sokoto – 153, Niger – 135, Akwa Ibom – 134, Benue – 121, Adamawa – 100, Anambra – 93, Kebbi – 86, Zamfara – 76, Yobe – 62, Ekiti – 46, Taraba- 27, Kogi – 5, and Cross River – 5.

    With the increasing number of confirmed cases in the country, NCDC said in the absence of a vaccine, compliance with infection prevention and control (IPC) measures remain the most effective intervention to control the COVID-19 outbreak.

    He was an alumnus of University of Teesside, Middlebrough and a fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, a certified coach and an accomplished toastmaster.

    RDJ worked and spent years in Europe as one of the key strategists and presenters on Radio Kudirat – the voice of democracy during the military era.

    Veteran musician, Berkley Jones of the defunct BLO is dead.

    The respected singer died last night in Asaba where he went for a job.

    In their heydays, BLO were the rave of the 70s and early 80s

    The band comprised of Berkley Ike Jones, Laolu Akins and Mike Gbenga Odumosu.

     

    The trio were influenced by British and American rock groups and soul music.recorded some afro-rock songs such as Preacher Man and Native doctor.

    Blo recorded their first album Chapter One, a psychedelic rock record under EMI label. Sales of the album did not meet EMI’s expectations and the band eventually left EMI to record their next album with a Decca affiliate. Between 1974 and 1976 the band released three more records, Phase II, Step Three and Phase IV.

    Popular Yoruba actor, Gbolagade Akinpelu popularly known as Ogun Majek, is dead.

     

    TheNewsGuru gathered he died on Thursday morning at his Imalefalafia, Oke-Ado, Ibadan home.

     

    Actor and filmmaker, Tunde Ola-Yusuf, confirmed the incident in a Facebook post.

     

    In a brief statement, he said: “From him we come and on to him we shall return, Alh Gbolagade Akinpelu Ogunmajek has returned to his creator. May God almighty rest his soul among the righteous. Amen.”

     

    Ogun Majek battled prolonged-sickness before his eventual demise.

    My father-in-law is alive – Fatima Ganduje-Ajimobi

    Fatima Ganduje-Ajimobi, a daughter-in-law of former Governor of Oyo state Abiola Ajimobi, has debunked reports of his death.

    Some Nigerian bloggers had announced Ajimobi’s death, without the confirmation of the family.

    But Ganduje-Ajimobi, in a tweet on Thursday evening, said: “Thank you for all the messages but our father is still alive, alhamdulillah. When it is our time we will all die so wait first…”

    Ajimobi, 70, has been treating a serious COVID-19 illness at the First Cardiology Consultants Hospital in Ikoyi Lagos.

    He slipped into a coma and has been on the ventilator for close to two weeks.

    Ajimobi represented the Oyo state in the senate between 2003 and 2007. He was elected governor in 2011 and 2015.

    He failed in his bid in 2019 to return to the senate.

    He is now the deputy national chairman of the APC and the acting chairman, with Oshiomhole suspended by the court.

    According to his media aide, Bolajii Tunji, the immediate former governor of oyo State is still very much alive and kicking.

    Ajimobi was sick after testing positive for coronavirus. He was previously on coma but was reported to have left coma in the past few days.

    A former Senator, he governed Oyo State for eight years and is currently the APC NWC-recognised National Chairman.

    BREAKING: Serving Lagos Senator, Bayo Osinowo is dead

    Reports reaching TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) has it that the representative of Lagos East Senatorial District, Bayo Oshinowo aka ‘pepper’ is dead.

    He died on Monday after a brief illness at the age of 64.

    He was elected Senator in 2019 and was subsequently appointed as the Chairman, Senate Committee on Industries.

    Senator Osinowo had his primary education at St. Augustin Primary School in Ijebu-Ode and his Secondary Education in Isoyin Grammar School, Isoyin.

    In 1977, he started his career as a Land Officer at the Federal Ministry of Works till 1979. He then became the Managing Director at NITAL International from 1986 to 2003.

    Senator Osinowo became the Managing Director at NIMCO International Co. Ltd from 1990 to 2003. He also worked as Managing Director, at Extreme Piling and Construction Company Ltd and NIMCO Dredging Company from 1990 to 2003.

    Osinowo began his political life in the second republic serving as a youth Chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDP).

    Osinowo was a four time member of the Lagos State House of Assembly.

    Pastor Ituah Ighodalo of Trinity House, on Sunday, ministered at a funeral service on the same day he lost his wife.

    Speaking at the burial ceremony of 24 years old, Ayodeji Modupe-Johnson, Ighodalo stressed that life is full of mystery and no one has control over it.

    The deceased, Ayodeji Modupe-Johnson was born on August 1, 1995 and passed away on June 12, 2020.

    He also gave a hint on the death of his wife, saying ‘if anyone told me today would have been the way it is, I would say it is not possible’

    His words at Ayodeji’s funeral service: “Life is a deep mystery, there is no one human being, no matter how wise they are, who can say they fully understand life. Let us accept life’s mystery. We don’t have control over most things in life, how you were born, your height, race, who gave birth to you, complexion, Nobody has control over life…this time yesterday…”
