    Veteran highlife music maestro Victor Olaiya is dead.

    TheNewsGuru gathered that the revered musician passed on at exactly 12noon today, 12th of February 2020 at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital(LUTH).

    The cause of his demise is yet to be known as at the time of filing this report.

    He died at the age of 89.

    A statement by his label, Evergreen Music Company, confirmed his death.

    Its Managing Director Bimbo Esho said: “The entire music world wish to announce the death of a Legend of Highlife music, One of the last man standing, the last of the original Dr Victor Abimbola Olaiya OON..

    “We pray that the soul of the Doyen of highlife music find repose with his creator while wishing the family and entire music community the fortitude to bear this irreplaceable loss.”

    Tragic! Kirk Douglas, ‘Spartacus’ actor is dead

    Popular actor, Kirk Douglas, who acted in the 1960 classic ‘Spartacus’, has passed on. He was aged 103.

    Michael, his son, disclosed via a post on his social media page on Wednesday night — few hours after he passed away — but did not mention what led to late Hollywood icon’s death.

    In the post, Michael articulated sadness over his father’s death, noting he would greatly be missed in the family.

    “It is with tremendous sadness that my brothers and I announce that Kirk Douglas left us today at the age of 103,” he wrote on Instagram.

    “To the world he was a legend, an actor from the golden age of movies who lived well into his golden years, a humanitarian whose commitment to justice and the causes he believed in set a standard for all of us to aspire to.

    “But to me and my brothers Joel and Peter he was simply Dad, to Catherine, a wonderful father-in-law, to his grandchildren and great grandchild their loving grandfather, and to his wife Anne, a wonderful husband.

    “Kirk’s life was well lived, and he leaves a legacy in film that will endure for generations to come, and a history as a renowned philanthropist who worked to aid the public and bring peace to the planet.

    “Let me end with the words I told him on his last birthday and which will always remain true. Dad- I love you so much and I am so proud to be your son. #KirkDouglas.”

     

    Born on December 9, 1916, Douglas, was among actors who contributed immensely to the development and popularity of Hollywood. He is widely renowned for his role in several blockbuster movies including ‘Spartacus’ and ‘Champion.’

    His death comes few days after Kobe Bryant, US basketball icon, died in a helicopter crash in Calabasas, California.

    JUST IN: Saudi Arabia’s Ambassador to Nigeria is dead

    The Ambassador of Saudi Arabia to Nigeria, Mr Adnan Bostaji is dead.

    According to reports, the late Saudi Arabia Ambassador died in his sleep in the early hours of Tuesday.

    The late Bostji was said to have returned from the Kingdom to Nigeria on Sunday evening and was planning to come to office on Tuesday when they found him dead in his sleep.
    “We are right now in the hospital from where we are making arrangement to fly his remain to Saudi Arabia,” a source said.

    A statement from the Royal Embassy of Saudi Arabia in Abuja said: With the deepest sense of sadness and complete submission to the will of Allah, Royal Embassy announces the passing away of His Excellency, the Ambassador of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to Nigeria, Mr. Adnan Mahmoud Bostaji. May his blessed soul rest in peace.”

    Former Kenyan President Arap Moi is dead

    Daniel arap Moi, who ruled Kenya with an iron fist for two decades as the East African country’s second president died at age 95 on Tuesday.

    Moi’s death was announced by the office of the current President Uhuru Kenyatta.

    “It is with profound sadness and sorrow that I announce the passing of a great African statesman, arap Moi, the second president of the Republic of Kenya.

    “The former president passed on at the Nairobi Hospital in the wee hours of Feb. 4, in the presence of his family,” Kenyatta said.

    Kenyatta has announced a period of national mourning from Tuesday until the day of his funeral.

    The former president will be laid to rest in a state funeral, with all appropriate civilian and full military honours.

    His son, Gideon Moi, said his father passed away peacefully and that the families had accepted it.

    “I give my heartfelt gratitude to all Kenyans,” he said.

    Moi was in office from 1978 to 2002, a time that was marked by the centralisation of power, corruption and allegations of human rights abuses.

    The former British colony was a one-party state during much of his rule.

    Moi served as vice-president under Kenya’s first post-independence President, Jomo Kenyatta, before taking over the top post.

    The press secretary to the current president, Mr Lee Njiru, told local TV channel CitizenTV that Moi had been in hospital for a while.

    “He has been hospitalised from 2019. I have seen his decline.

    “God has declared his will, and we have to abide by it,” Njiru said.

    Arthur Nwankwo, EMU Chancellor is dead

    The Chancellor, Eastern Mandate Union (EMU), and former Vice Chairman, NADECO, Dr Arthur Agwuncha Nwankwo, is dead.

     

    Nwankwo, who was among those that fought against military rule in the country and for the return of democracy, died at about 2 pm at the age of 78 at the University Teaching Hospital (UNTH), Enugu.

    The late Nwankwo, who hailed from Ajali in Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra State, and held many traditional titles, including Ikeogu, worked in the propaganda directorate of Biafra in 1967.

    Reacting to his death, the President, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Anambra State Chapter, Chief Damian Okeke-Ogene, described Nwankwo as a courageous man who in his lifetime stood firm for the Igbo nation.

    He said: “It is a great loss to the Igbo nation. He was courageous. He was a man who stood up for whatever that is Igbo, highly principled and a courageous patriot.

    “It is very unfortunate that we should lose such a man at a time the Igbo nation is looking for elders that will put Igbo in the right perspective.

    “Arthur was a fighter, a very brave man in the likes of Gani Fawehinmi. A man that did not care whose ox is gored when he is pushing a just cause. Irrespective of his relationship even with the military, Arthur always stood out. He established a newspaper called ‘Outlook’… The paper stood out as the voice of the Igbo nation. Is a pity we lost him.”

    Helicopter Crash: Remains of Kobe Bryant, eight others recovered

    The bodies of all nine people aboard the helicopter that crashed near Los Angeles killing NBA legend Kobe Bryant have been recovered, the coroner’s office said Tuesday.

    Three bodies were retrieved from the wreckage by a special response team Sunday, and the remaining six on Monday, it said.

    The remains were “removed from the crash site and transported to the department’s forensic science centre,” the Los Angeles County coroner’s office said in a statement.

    Investigators are examining the bodies and working to identify the individual remains.

    This development was confirmed by the state Commissioner for Health, Dr. Rafiu Isamotu and the Special Adviser to the governor on Public Health, Dr. Olasiji Olamiju.

    The cabinet members who spoke to newsmen in Osogbo, said adequate measures have been put in place to contain the spread of the deadly disease.

    Isamotu stated that all hands were on deck to check the spread of the disease as he revealed that the affected persons are currently getting medical treatment at Obafemi Awolowo Teaching Hospital in Ile-Ife and Ilesa.

Many of those infected by the virus do not develop symptoms. When symptoms occur they typically include fever, weakness, headaches, vomiting, and muscle pains.

  • Female Army recruit found dead in lovers house

    A 23-year-old lady, Patience Amos, has died in the hands of her boyfriend in the Adamawa State capital, Yola.

    The decomposing body of Patience was found in the boyfriend’s room days after she died, perceivably after a violent argument.

    Neighbours said they heard voices of Patience and the boyfriend, Ali Wakil, at his residence in Damilu in the Jimeta area of Yola, but did not take it for anything that might turn fatal.

    ‘’Residents became suspicious when we could not see the lady for good three days, and what worried us more was the terrible odour emitting from their room,’’ one of the neighbours said.

    The source said the door to the room was locked from the outside, making access difficult.

    ‘’What compounded the situation was how the door of the room was locked from the outside, a development which compelled people to forcefully open the window of the room only to discover the body of the female lover at the stage of decomposition,” the neighbour said.

    Patience was newly recruited into the Nigerian Army, while the boyfriend claims to be a military personnel serving with 68 Reference Hospital Yaba in Lagos state, but this claim is being doubted.

    The discovery of the dead body took the neighbours to the palace of the ward head who reported to the police who in turn traced of Patience’s father.

    The father, Amos Ya’u, explained that his daughter left his house to braid her hair but did not come back. He said they had called her on the phone on that fateful evening, but she told them that she would be coming back home.

    He said they called her line later on Sunday but it was not going through, and that since that day, they heard nothing from her until four days later when a police officer came and informed him of her death.

    The state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Suleiman Nguroje, confirmed the killing of Patience and said the suspect had since been arrested after the Commissioner of Police directed his arrest.

    Sad! Nollywood actor, Toyosi Arigbabuwo is dead

    A veteran Yoruba actor, Toyosi Arigbabuwo, is dead.

    According to reports reaching TheNewsGuru, he died at his residence located at Ile-Alli area, along the Apete-Arola Road in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.

    Arigbabuwo died on Monday evening in his house.The deceased had been sick for over six months until he died yesterday night.

    The late actor also dedicated part of his life to the promotion of Islamic religion, especially in Ido Local Government Area where he lived until his death.

    Arigbabuwo until his death was the Public Relations Officer of the Muslim Community in Apete-Awotan-Ayegun and environs in Ido Local Government Area of Oyo State.

    The Chairman, Muslim Community in Apete-Awotan-Ayegun and environs, Abdulwaheed Amoo, also confirmed the death of the veteran Yoruba actor.

    “He was the Public Relations Officer of the Apete-Awotan-Ayegun Muslim community until he died. He is a humble person.

    Arigbabuwo featured in many Yoruba movies including Ogborielemosho and Bashorun Gaa.

    [Update] Five dead in Kaduna gas explosion

    The Kaduna Police Command has confirmed the death of five persons in the gas explosion at Sabon Tasha in Kaduna metropolis on Saturday afternoon.

    The Command’s Public Relations Officers, DSP Yakubu Sabo, made the confirmation in a press statement issued in Kaduna.

    Sabo added that four other persons sustained various degrees of injuries in the incident which occurred after a cylinder exploded at a gas refill shop.

    According to Sabo, two of the victims were burnt beyond recognition.

    “The impact of the incident affected three other adjoining shops of different businesses.

    “Teams of detectives have been dispatched to the scene on rescue mission and further investigation.
    “The four injured have been rushed to Barau Dikko Hospital Kaduna for treatment,” he said.
