Just in: Many Nigerien soldiers killed in bomb blast

A bomb blast has killed six Nigerien soldiers near the border with Mali, Niger’s army said Thursday, adding around 10 “terrorists” were later killed in air strikes.

An army patrol vehicle early this week hit a homemade landmine near the southwestern village of Tingara, the defence ministry said in a bulletin.

Other soldiers were also wounded and taken to hospital, it added.

Niger is ruled by military leaders who seized power in a July coup, citing a worsening security situation as justification for the power grab.

But jihadist violence that had already gone on for eight years has continued.

The patrol was heading back from Inates in the western region of Tillaberi, which is prone to jihadist attacks.

The army said it later carried out an air strike after tracking those it said were responsible and “neutralized” several of them.

Another air strike targeted “a group of terrorists” in Amalaoulaou in Mali, killing at least eight fighters and destroying equipment, it said

Last month, 23 Nigerien soldiers died in a “terrorist” ambush in Tillaberi, which borders Burkina Faso and Mali, both also under military regimes.

The Niamey regime also faces violence by Boko Haram jihadists and their rivals Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) from the southeastern region of Diffa near Nigeria.

BREAKING: Popular US actor, sportsman, OJ Simpson finally dies, aged 76

Popular actor and sportsman, O.J. Simpson, a complicated figure in sports and entertainment, passed away at the age of 76 from prostate cancer.

Simpson passed suddenly in Las Vegas, surrounded by his loved ones, including his children and grandchildren, according to confirmation provided to TMZ by his family and lawyer.

His illness-related struggle brought an end to a turbulent existence in which he was once a highly acclaimed athlete and was now involved in ethical and legal disputes.

Orenthal James Simpson, an NFL icon and actor, was diagnosed with prostate cancer in recent years, leading to a steady decline in his health. Despite initial denials of hospice care, reports had been circulating since February about his diagnosis. Simpson himself hinted at a battle with cancer in 2023 but maintained a hopeful outlook. Unfortunately, the disease returned, leading to his demise.

Simpson’s legacy is a blend of brilliance and controversy. As a revered athlete, he achieved fame as a Heisman Trophy winner and a star running back for the Buffalo Bills. His transition to Hollywood further cemented his status as a celebrity, where he was known for his roles in movies and television, as well as being a prominent advertising figure for Hertz.

However, his life took a dark turn in the 1990s when he was accused of the murders of his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend, Ron Goldman. The trial that followed was one of the most watched and debated legal battles in American history. Despite being acquitted of the murder charges, a civil court later found him liable for their deaths, a verdict that significantly altered public perception of Simpson.

Further legal troubles followed in Las Vegas, where Simpson was convicted in 2007 for his involvement in a robbery aimed at retrieving personal sports memorabilia. He served nine years before being released on parole in 2017. In his later years, Simpson lived a quieter life in Las Vegas, remaining active on social media and engaging with the public to some extent.

Simpson’s death closes a chapter on a life that was as tumultuous as it was fascinating. He leaves behind a legacy that will continue to be analyzed and discussed for its profound impact on culture, sports, and the legal system.

  • Abuja looted warehouse: It’s a strong message to Tinubu, says Adegboruwa

Abuja looted warehouse: It’s a strong message to Tinubu, says Adegboruwa

A Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa, has said the looting of a government warehouse in Abuja on Sunday was a direct reflection of the level of hardship the majority of Nigerians battling currently.

The lawyer said Abuja residents who looted food items used it to pass a message to President Bola Tinubu about the economic policies of President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

Adegboruwa made this known in an interview with a television programme on Monday.

The human rights lawyer stated that Tinubu and his economic team have an assignment of reviewing the current economic policies to renew the survival of the majority of Nigerians.

    SUFFERING IN THE LAND

He said, “Across all states in Nigeria presently there is a crisis of survival from the part of the people. So, it is not just this particular occurrence, a truck bearing foodstuff was randomly attacked and looted. I do not support this in any way at all because we must have an environment where we can secure lives and property.

“But it is a reflection of the fact that the economic policies of the present administration are not helping the people of the country and of course, these occurrences showcase the frustration that people are going through.”

“You know what they say that we pray that we don’t get to a position where the low income earners will rise up to be eating the rich. I think there is a message to the president and members of his economic team that there is a need to rejig the system in such a way that will allow for the survival of the majority of our people.”

Recall that the president removed the petrol subsidy immediately he assumed the office off Number One Citizen in May.

Speaking on this, Adegboruwa said, “Effect of the fuel subsidy removal has imposed hardship on the people in terms of moving from one end to the other. And of course, factories are closing down, there is high unemployment, cost of living is very high whilst the earning capacity remains the same or even lower.”
