Omo-Agege demands probe of death of Okuama community leader in Army custody*

The Deputy President of the Senate in the 9th Assembly, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, has called for a thorough and transparent probe of the reported death in military custody of the President General of Okuama development association, Pa James Achovwuko Oghoroko.

The late community leader had been in detention by the Army after his arrest alongside five other community leaders in August 2024.

The former Deputy President of the Senate represented Delta Central Senatorial District where Okuama community is located from 2015 to 2023. He decried the handling of the issue by the military, saying that its approach to the arrest and detention of the community leaders of Okuama without arraigning them in court is illegal.

“Pa James Achovwuko Oghoroko and the others are not soldiers, but civilians that ought to have been tried in a civil court. Failing to do so and this tragic development has cast a pall on democratic governance in Nigeria. Right now, the people in the area believe their leader was tortured, ultimately leading to his death. A thorough investigation by an independent body is imperative to dispel any inaccurate perception of the entire saga,” Senator Omo-Agege said.
In a press release issued by Sunny Areh, his Media Adviser, the former Deputy Senate President said despite the sad and regrettable killing of some military personnel at Okuama, due proces should be followed in handling the incident. He said that in a democratic society as Nigeria, the legal platform should be used to secure justice for all parties and maintain peace in the area.

He extended his condolences to the family of Pa James Achovwuko Oghoroko and urged the military to heal the ill will by immediately releasing the other five Okuama community leaders still in military detention.

Again, he commiserated with the military on the killing of 17 of its personnel by yet to be identified gun men. Omo-Agege said it is time, however, to deescalate the situation by letting democratic institutions handle the search for justice.

Abuja hotel under lock and key, staff nabbed over death of ex-Minister’s aide

The former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani kayode has confirmed the death of his Special Assistant, Mr. Ndifreke Saviour Mark, who according to reports, slumped and died in an Abuja hotel.

In a post on his X formerly Twitter handle the former Minister while mourning the death of the man said the police have started investigation into the incident while the hotel has been sealed up and that he will ensure that justice is done and what led to his death unravelled.

According to his statement; “It is with great sadness that I announce the passing of my devoted Special Assistant, Mr. Ndifreke Saviour Mark, who was with me for no less than 34 years.

He left home at 5.40am on the morning of Sunday 13th October for morning Mass as he was a devoted Catholic and member of the Catholic Church of Assumption, Asokoro after which he went to a hotel by the name of Mildy Lodge and Apartments in Garki, Abuja.

According to the police he took a room at the hotel and spent some time there with an individual after which he apparently slumped and died in that individual’s presence.

He was taken to Asokoro District Hospital, was pronounced dead upon arrival and has since been put in the hospital morgue.

The individual he was with at the time of his death in the hotel is now in police custody and I have insisted on a full criminal investigation of the matter and an autopsy.

The hotel receptionist has also been detained by the police whilst both the manager and the owner of the hotel were invited for questioning earlier this week.

The entire hotel was also sealed up by the police for two days and the room in which he lodged remains sealed till today. I have broken the sad news to his family, I have met with his wife Barrister Patience Ndifreke-Mark and his Uncle, Mr. Clement Mathias, (who represented his family) and I have also told them of my intention to ensure that, if indeed there is any foul play, justice is done and those behind it are brought to book.

Mark was like a son to me and his passing is a huge blow to me and my entire family. We shared many dreams and aspirations and fought many battles together shoulder to shoulder.

Now he has gone it has left much pain but I give thanks to God for his life and for the 52 years that he spent on earth. I have assured his wife and family of my intention to stand by them at this difficult time and to ensure that they do not lack or want for anything.

I have absolute confidence in the FCT Police Command to get to the bottom of this matter after which we can proceed to bury a man that was my most loyal staff and most trusted aide.

Most important of all is the fact that he was a kind, reliable and compassionate soul who brought joy to many and who was incapable of hurting a fly.

I will never forget him and though he has passed he lives on in our hearts. I thank all those that have found the time to come and mourn with us at this difficult time.

May Ndifreke’s precious soul rest in peace and may the Lord comfort his wife and two beautiful young children.

FATAL attraction: Another Chinese man ‘Kills’ Nigerian lady for rejecting love moves

Ocheze Ogbonna, a female crane operator at Inner Galaxy Steel Company, Umuahala-Obuzor in Ukwa West Local Government Area of Abia State, has been allegedly killed by a Chinese national who wanted to be in a relationship with her.

According to the member representing Ukwa East/Ukwa West Federal Constituency of Abia State in the House of Representatives, Chris Nkwonta, Ogbonna died after the Chinese expatriate working at the Inner Galaxy Steel Company located in Umuahala-Obuzor pushed her down from the crane for rejecting his love advances.

The development comes after Frank Geng Quarong, a Chinese man, killed his Nigerian lover, Ummukulsum Sani Buhari, for walking out of their relationship.

Quarong had claimed that after spending N60 million on her in the two years they dated, she abandoned him

Besides huge amounts of money I used to spend on her, I used to take her out to places like Bristol Palace and Central Hotel to eat food. I bought her house worth N4 million, a car worth N10 million. N18 million as capital to start business, and spent N500,000 worth of bags and shoes on her new shop and N1 million worth of laces and wrappers and a house in Abuja which she started building,” he had told a court in Kano.

He added that he bought her gold wears worth N5 million, N6 million to go and process her certificate at Sokoto University and N1 million to install the solar system in their house.

Meanwhile, the Federal lawmaker has expressed deep sadness over the death of his constituent, Ocheze, describing the alleged action of the Chinese expatriate as wicked.

While maintaining that his constituency is known for peace, the federal lawmaker demanded justice for the victim.

“Miss Ocheze Ogbonna’s death orchestrated by a Chinese expatriate is a gross abuse of the rules of engagement and a total disregard for the sanctity of human life and an affront on their host community, Umuahala-Obuzor and the peace loving people of Ukwa West Local Government Area.”

“This barbaric act once again calls to mind the incessant calls by well-meaning Nigerians that the Chinese expatriates operating in Nigeria do not have regard for human lives and must be called to order immediately to avert the breakdown of law and order.

““I strongly condemn the dastardly act and brutal killing of late Miss Ocheze Ogbonna by the Chinese expatriate who has been identified as Mr Power.

“I hereby call on the Inspector General of Police, IGP, Kayode Egbetokun, the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, the Abia State Commissioner of Police, CP, Kenechukwu Onwuemelie, the Honourable Minister of State, Labour and Productivity, Hon Barr. Nkeiruka Onyejeocha and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), to ensure that the culprit, who I understand is being shielded by the security agents, is brought to book and made to face the full wrath of the law,” he said in a statement.

  • Remember death at all times, Onaiyekan urges Christian faithful

Remember death at all times, Onaiyekan urges Christian faithful

Cardinal John Onaiyekan, Archbishop Emeritus of the Abuja Catholic Archdiocese, has urged Christian faithful in Nigeria to remember death at all times.

Onaiyekan said this when he spoke with newsmen at the “Requiem Mass” in honour of late James Okorie, the younger brother of Rev. Fr. Kenneth Agwu, at St. Francis Catholic Church, Galadimawa, Abuja.

He advised Christian faithful not to be afraid of death, saying that death was inevitable as it can come anytime.

He said that since death was inevitable, believers should look up to it with great expectations.

“We will all go when our time comes. For us who are Christians, one thing is sure, that there is no untimely death for us. We die whenever it is our time. That also means that we should be ready for it any time.

“That is why services of funeral like this is always a reminder for every one of us. Today we are singing for James, we don’t know who is next, even among us now, but somebody is coming next.

“Death is inevitable. That does not mean we should be afraid of it. In fact, because it is inevitable, we expect it. The believer looks forward to death with expectation.

“We are not frightened by it, as if we don’t know what comes after. We are sure what comes after that.
“St. Paul says, “These early pagans who do not have hope, that are sad with the reality of death,” he said.

In his short exhortation, Vocations Director, Catholic Archdiocese of Abuja , Rev. Fr. John Atep advised Nigerians to prioritise meeting the need of the less privileged and the needy in the society.

Atep said that meeting the needs of people was part of man’s purpose in life.

“When people are in need, hungry, thirsty, naked, in emotional or psychological need, you are there for them.

“When you do all that, you are fulfilling what God has created for you for,”Atep said.

He urged members of the congregation to emulate the purposeful life of Agwu, who lived his life according to the standards of God.

He also advised Christian faithful not to be afraid of death or consider it as an end to life but as a transformation to eternal life with God.

He condoled with the family of the deceased and urged it to take solace in the fact that Agwu lived according to the will of God, urging them to sustain the good legacies he left behind.

He also advised the congregation to see Agwu’s death as a reminder that one day, everyone would return to his maker.

“We need to pray that God will help us to live a good life, and not just a good life, that we may end well. It is not how we start, but it’s how we end. The end is the most important,” he said.

Speaking with newsmen, Rev. Fr Agwu, who is the Priest in Charge of St. Francis Catholic Church, Galadimawa, described the death of his younger brother, who was so close to him, as the most single tragedy that has ever happened to him.

Agwu, who is also the director and editor-in-chief, Good Shepard Newspaper, said that though his brother’s death was painful, he hoped to meet him again at the feet of Christ in heaven.

“The death of my younger one thought me a lesson, something that is very strange. As close as we were, I took a lot of things for granted.

“It was upon his death I started struggling to get even thing as simple as picture of him. I did not have it because I never expected that I was going to bury him.

“I have always thought I will die first, and he will be at my grave side to pay his last respect, but the reverse is the case presently.

“So for Christians, everyone should be prepared because we don’t know when, how, and where it is going to take place so that we will not be taken unware,” he said.
