  • Cancer not a death sentence – Expert

Cancer not a death sentence – Expert

A medical expert, Dr Veronica Agana, has debunked the widespread belief that cancer is a death sentence.

She emphasised that with early detection and a healthy lifestyles, the disease can be prevented and defeated.

Agana made this known during the 2025 World Cancer Day commemoration organised by Hassy’s Haven Foundation (HHF) on Tuesday in Kaduna.

According to her, fear and misconceptions about cancer have conditioned many to believe that it inevitably leads to death.

“While cancer is indeed a serious disease, the mindset that it is a death sentence kills faster than cancer itself,” she said.

Agana stressed the importance of regular medical checkups for early detection.

She said, “Cancer often becomes visible at advanced stages when it has already spread to other organs.

“Cancer has four stages, and by the time it’s detected in stages two or three, it may already have caused significant damage.

“Regular checkups help expose the disease early before it becomes a major threat.”

Agana also lamented the high cost of cancer treatment, calling for a focus on prevention.

She advised individuals to maintain  healthy diets, exercise regularly, avoid excessive sugar intake, consume fruits, and drink at least three litres of water daily to detoxify the body and boost the immune system.

Earlier in her remarks, the founder of Hassy’s Haven Foundation, Hajiya Hussaina Mohammed-Yakubu, extolled the theme for this  year’s World Cancer Day: ‘United by Unique’.

According to her, it aims to foster a global movement that recognizes and understands the perspectives of those affected by cancer.

“This campaign encourages a stronger connection between healthcare providers, patients, and communities, advocating for health systems that prioritize people,” Mohammed-Yakubu said.

She added that the foundation aligned with the mission of providing assistance, hope, and strength to cancer patients, especially the underprivileged women battling the disease.

“Cancer remains a global health challenge. Many women face financial, emotional, and psychological barriers that hinder their access to early detection, treatment, and recovery support,” Mohammed-Yakubu said.

She stated the foundation was established in memory of the late Hassana Yakubu, a dedicated journalist who battled cancer for eight years.

Mohammed-Yakubu said her twin sister’s resilience continues to inspire the foundation’s work in championing the rights of women affected by cancer.

“Hassy’s Haven Foundation will continue to advocate policy changes and call on government agencies and stakeholders to strengthen cancer care services and ensure affordable treatment for all,” she added.

In his remarks, Bashir Rabe-Mani, the Kaduna Zonal Manager of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), commended Mohammed-Yakubu and the foundation for assisting indigent cancer patients.

He called on the government, non-governmental organidations, and wealthy individuals to step up efforts in addressing cancer prevalence.

He urged othe Nigerians to emulate the foundation’s efforts, emphasising the importance of collaborative action in reducing the burden of cancer in society.

The foundation was established in memory of the late Hassana Yakubu, a member of staff of the agency. The deceased was a dedicated journalist who battled cancer for eight years.

  • Nigerian senate approves death sentence for hard drug offenders

Nigerian senate approves death sentence for hard drug offenders

Henceforth, anyone found guilty of peddling or dealing with cocaine, heroin and other hard drugs into the country will be sentenced to death according to the Nigerian senate.

The Upper Chamber on Thursday approved death penalty for drug dealers in the country.

The Senate also approved capital punishment for manufacturers, traffickers and people involving in delivering hard drugs by any means.

The Senate arrived at the resolution on the floor of the red chamber after deliberations on the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) Act (Amendment) Bill, 2024.

The maximum punishment in the extant law for offenders is life imprisonment.

During the consideration of the report on the bill for passage on Thursday, Senate Whip, Ali Ndume (APC, Borno South), recommended that the punishment of life imprisonment be “toughened” to death penalty.

The penalty for drug importation or dealership is captured in Section 11 of the extant law, which Ndume sought to be increased to a death sentence.

He said, “This (life imprisonment) should be changed to a death sentence. This is the standard worldwide. We have to do this to address this problem of drugs that has seriously affected our youths.

“It should be toughened beyond life imprisonment. It should be the death sentence, either by hanging or any way.”

“When a matter has to do with life and death, we should be accountable. Let’s divide the Senate. This is lawmaking. We are not here to take voice votes,” Oshiomhole said.

His position was overruled by the Deputy Senate President, Barau Jibrin, who presided over the plenary.

Jibrin told Oshiomhole that he should have called for a division of the Senate immediately after the voting took place and before the Senate moved to another clause in the amendment bill.

“This is about procedure. You were supposed to call for a division; you didn’t do so. I am sorry, I can’t help you”, the DSP stood his ground and stuck with the decision of the Senate.

However, the  proposal did not sit well with some of his colleagues, including former Governor of Edo State, Adams Oshiomhole, who took to the floor to voice out his reservations.

Oshiomhole told his colleagues that he would rarely joke with any matter concerning life and death.

Similarly, Senator Sampson Ekong from Akwa Ibom State also kicked against the resolution of the Senate but he was overruled.

The Senate went ahead to pass the bill for a third reading.

The report on the bill was jointly produced by the Committees on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters/Drugs and Narcotics.

  • Killers of UNILORIN student sentenced to death by hanging

Killers of UNILORIN student sentenced to death by hanging

After one and half year legal tussle, an Ilorin High Court on Tuesday sentenced killers of Olajide Blessing Omowumi, a 300 level student of the University of Ilorin, to death by hanging.

The deceased, who would had turned 26 years this year, was raped and murdered in a merciless manner by the assailants.

The trial judge, Justice Ibrahim Yusuf, who handed down the judgment, convicted the 1st, 2nd and 3rd suspects; Abdulazeez Ismail, Ajala Oluwatimileyin and Oyeyemi Omogbolahan, for the offences of culpable homicide and armed robbery, ordering that they should die by hanging.

“I direct you Abdulazeez Ismail, Ajala Oluwatimileyin and Oyeyemi Omogbolahan, should be hanged by the neck until you’re pronounced dead,” the judge pronounced.

In the 165 pages judgment, which was delivered for four hours, the court also sentenced the 4th and 5th suspects to three years imprisonment for the offence of theft.

Earlier, the court has discharged and acquitted the 6th, 7th and 8th suspects; Abdullateef Abdulrahman, Daud Aderayo and Akande Oladoja on the basis that they were not found guilty of any charges against them.

According to the judgment, the lifeless body of the deceased was found in the afternoon time of the day with bruises all over her body, her hands tied to the back, and a towel covering her face.

The judge added that the conventional statement which could be relied upon on the basis of law, revealed that the deceased struggled with the killers until she was pushed and fell, while the 1st and 3rd convicts held her down for the 2nd convict to perpetrate the henieus crime of rape.

He said the deceased was raped till death on June 2, 2021, at her guardian’s residence in Tanke area of Ilorin, and a piece of paper was dropped on her chest with message containing: ‘No forgiveness for Unilorin student’.

According to the judgment, Ismail, Oluwatimileyin and Omogbolahan conspired among themselves to rob the deceased of her Samsung Galaxy A2 Core handset, one black Acer Aspire laptop andone Samsung drive, among several other items.

The killers were tried on 11-count charge bordering on murder, rape, armed robbery and illegal possession of firearms, among others.

Reacting to the judgment, the Prosecution Counsel and former Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr Salman Jawondo, told newsmen after the court session that justice had caught up with the culprits.

“The first, second and third defendants who are the main culprits were found guilty of culpable homicide punishable with death, conspiracy to commit robbery and conspiracy to murder.

“They were accordingly sentenced to death. That’s maximum. There’s no discretion for the court to exercise by virtue of provision of the Armed Robbery Act, it’s death.

“So also by virtue of Section 221 of the Penal Code, it’s death sentence for culpable homicide. So, they were accordingly sentenced to death.

“Although, the third defendant, who was also convicted of rape was sentenced to life imprisonment, but it’s neither here nor there. When somebody is condemned, the life imprisonment does not ameliorate anything,” he said.

Jawondo further explained that: “With respect to the fourth and fifth defendants, they were found guilty of conspiracy to steal and stealing of money in the bank account of the deceased.

“You know, after killing her, they took her ATM card, Sim card and her phone. They changed her password, through instrumentality of the fourth and fifth defendants, who are experts in computer manipulation, collected some money through transfer, totalling about N149,000.

“They were convicted for conspiracy and stealing/theft. They were accordingly sentenced to three years imprisonment to run concurrently. For conspiracy, one year, for main offence three years, commencing from the date of their arrest.”

He added that: “They’ve spent about one and half years already in custody. The other three: sixth, seventh and eighth escaped by whiskers. They are very lucky. If you look at their involvement, they only assisted to dispose of property stolen.

“The irony of it all is that all those involved are very young men of 19, 23, etc. It’s quite unfortunate and that tells that we have to work on our future in this country,” he said.

  • BOSTON MARATHON BOMBER: Supreme court maintains death sentence for Tsarnaev

BOSTON MARATHON BOMBER: Supreme court maintains death sentence for Tsarnaev

The United State’s Supreme Court on Friday reimposed the death sentence for Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, reversing a federal appeals court ruling that had voided it.

In a 6-3 decision, the justices sided with the justice department’s challenge to a 2020 lower court ruling that had upheld Tsarnaev’s conviction but overturned his death sentence.

“Dzhokhar Tsarnaev committed heinous crimes. The Sixth Amendment nonetheless guaranteed him a fair trial before an impartial jury. He received one,” the conservative justice, Clarence Thomas, wrote for the court.

Recall that a three-judge panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 1st Circuit ordered a new sentencing hearing, ruling unanimously that U.S. District Judge, George O’Toole Jr., failed to allow enough questioning of potential jurors about how closely they followed extensive news coverage of the bombings.

But the Supreme Court on Friday disagreed on that issue.

Writing for the majority, Justice Clarence Thomas said, “trial judges have broad discretion in deciding what questions to ask prospective jurors. That discretion does not vanish when a case garners public attention.”

The government also argued that holding a new sentencing hearing would further traumatize the Boston community, forcing the bombing victims to once again take the stand to describe the horrors that Tsarnaev inflicted on them.

As a result of the ruling, Tsarnaev, who is now 28, will remain on death row at Colorado’s supermax prison.

Although Attorney General, Merrick Garland, ordered a moratorium on executions in the federal system, the Biden Justice Department nonetheless took the same position it did under the Trump administration, defending the death sentence for the bombing.

Garland’s order did not stop prosecutors from seeking the death penalty in the case.

Joe Biden had promised to work to pass legislation in Congress to eliminate the death penalty at the federal level and set incentives for states to do as well, instead endorsing life sentences without probation or parole.

But his administration last year opted to proceed with an appeal initially launched by the justice department under his predecessor Donald Trump to defend Tsarnaev’s death sentence.

The court’s six conservative justices were in the majority, with its three liberals dissenting.

In a second phase of the trial, the same jury recommended capital punishment for the deaths of the two people killed by the bomb the younger Tsarnaev placed.

His older brother was killed in a shootout with police four days after the bombing.
