Buhari’s aide speaks on rumoured death of Abba Kyari

Bashir Ahmad, President Muhammadu Buhari’s media aide, has called for an end to the clamour for the whereabouts of the president’s chief of staff, Abba Kyari.

Kyari tested positive for coronavirus (COVID-19) two weeks ago, and his condition has been the subject of speculations since then.

Earlier this week, the presidency had also debunked a fake statement attributed to the government that Buhari had sacked Kyari.

The presidency’s denial of the rumoured dismissal has not done much to put paid to other rumours that Kyari’s case has worsened, with some going as far as suggesting that he might be dead.

Ahmad took to his Twitter account on Friday, April 3, 2020 to rebuke people who have been demanding to know Kyari’s current location. He said Kyari is in good condition somewhere in Lagos.

“Though I really don’t know who this Lola is, but someone close to her should pls tell her to leave Abba Kyari to recuperate in peace, he’s in Lagos & responding well to treatment.

“If it’s caring she should also use the same energy to ask the whereabouts of other #COVID19 patients,” he tweeted.

His tweet was directed at Lola Omotayo-Okoye, a public relations expert who is married to Peter Okoye, the popular music star of P-Square fame. Lola had commented on the mystery surrounding Kyari’s location on Thursday, April 2.

“Abba Kyari is President Buhari’s Chief of Staff and we don’t know where he is? Whether he is in Lagos receiving treatment or in Abuja at home, self-isolating, did he even go anywhere to get treatment or is he out of the country…nobody knows,” she said in a video posted online.

Kyari was transported to Lagos in an air ambulance on Monday, March 30.

In a statement on Sunday, March 29, he disclosed that his move to Lagos was for additional tests and observation and based on medical advice.

“This is a precautionary measure,” he said.

He noted that he’s not experienced high fever or other symptoms associated with the coronavirus disease and is hoping to get back to work soon.

  • Those behind Abba Kyari’s death rumour are heartless – Fani-Kayode

Critic, Femi Fani-Kayode has lashed out at those peddling rumour that Abba Kyari, Chief of Staff to President Muhammadu Buhari was dead.

Reports on social media suggested that Kyari, who is currently being treated for Coronavirus was dead.

But Fani-Kayode has described those peddling rumour of Kyari’s death as vicious and heartless.

He said Kyari was not dead but very much alive.

“It is not true that Abba Kyari, the Chief of Staff to Muhammadu Buhari is dead. Those that are behind that rumour are vicious and heartless.

“I remain opposed to the Muhammadu Buhari administration, but to wish or proclaim someone dead simply because you disagree with him politically is unacceptable,” he tweeted.

The rumour was started Thursday via a tweet by Kemi Olunloyo, a pharmacist, who now claimed to be an investigative journalist.

She claimed ‘a high ranking member of President Buhari’s Cabinet has DIED from coronavirus complications’.

Coronavirus: Spain reports new record of 864 deaths in one day

Spain reports a new record of 864 deaths in one day while total infections broke the 100,000 mark, making it the third country to surpass that milestone behind the United States and Italy.

Spanish health authorities said Wednesday that the total number of deaths reached 9,053 since the beginning of the outbreak.

Total infections hit 102,136. But the 24-hour increase of 7,719 was 1,500 fewer than the increase from the previous day, offering hope that the contagion rate is stabilizing.

Spain is two-and-a-half weeks into a national lockdown with stay-at-home rules for all workers except those in health care, food production and distribution, and other essential industries.

The country is frantically working to add to the number of intensive care units in hospitals which are quickly filling up in the country’s hardest-hit regions.

Spanish authorities are bringing into the country 1,500 purchased ventilator machines and asking local manufacturers to ramp up production, with some creative solutions employed, such as snorkeling masks repurposed as breathing masks.

Ehanire, however disclosed that all retired but able-bodied doctors and nurses were recalled.

  • CORONA WATCH 3: This is war!

CORONA WATCH 3: This is war!

On the day we recorded the first death (a returnee from the UK) from Corona virus’ 35 cases, and 15,000 deaths globally, it appears the President addressed Nigerians as the numbers begin to ramp up. Some have become accustomed to hearing through his spokesmen. Better late than never: let us borrow a leaf from other countries with daily briefings, providing information, taking questions, accepting the gaps and challenges, but encouraging their people. Ours is still a haze of ‘there is no Corona virus’, ‘it cannot survive our hot weather’, ‘the numbers are untrue’….

Ironically, alongside India, it is projected that Nigeria will be seriously hit by the Corona Virus. The reasons include our teeming population, one of the world’s highest illiteracy, and poverty levels. Our situation is worsened by the plummeted oil income, perilous Doctor to Patients ratio, and our near-total dependence on importation of drugs and medicals. Into this mix, throw corruption, and leadership that wantonly disobeys rules.

A more fundamental question are the numbers being reported. There is doubt. We are still relying on tracing against a virus where infected persons can remain asymptomatic while spreading it. Even with this tracing approach, two contacts of the index case still roam large (according to the authorities)! How many weeks ago? After the index case and up to two days ago, plane loads of people were flying in from areas with spiralling cases. What were being brought in that is more important than our lives? The big men and their children needed to return, maybe.

The indicators are not looking good at all. Legislators refusing screening at the airports; children of the elite refusing to self-isolate on return from abroad, rather partying in Abuja! The health authorities not responding to calls from those who have self-isolated. All indicators are the dam’s broken, while in our usual style, we are playing games….

Nations have recognised and embarked on ensuring aggressive testing. We are not testing enough. Partly because testing kits and personal prevention materials (PPM) are not available. Bottom-line: we did not prepare and are still not serious about this rampaging pandemic. Was it not reported the index case tried escaping from confinement because the unready place worsened his already dampened state?

We may be on the verge of a second supernatural escape after Ebola, we may be on the verge of an avoidable disaster. This battle is not for government, indeed, it is beyond government. All hands need to be on deck. Nigerians need all men of goodwill to rise to this generational need. This is war. Time to invite professionals (strategy, logistics, etc) to join civil servants. We have already lost much ground. Please.

    LAGOS STATE’S VERY EXPENSIVE JOKE

Lagos must be commended for its efforts at containing the Virus’ spread. Governor Sanwo-Olu has commendably been at the forefront, communicating with the people. However, its directives that garages and transporters provide sanitizers and hand washing facilities is a big joke. Government should provide these. Yes, it is said that the state and transporters have an unusual bond politically and financially, but these are abnormal times. The risks at garages and markets are just too high. Other nations are spending to save lives, we cannot be pennywise and life-foolish.

Seun Kuti, the youngest son of legendary Afrobeat godfather Fela Kuti has expressed his concern over the recent outbreak of the deadly virus, Corona, also known COVID-19.

The quite bold and outspoken music star took to his Instagram page to state what Nigerians should learn from the epidemic.

Seun also clearly stated that hunger would kill more African people than the wild spread of Coronavirus.

He shared the image above and captioned it, ” All the hundreds of billions of dollars spent on DEFENCE, has actually been spent on destroying the other, not protecting humanity or the planet. It is obvious that the world is unprepared to defend itself from a real enemy!! It is clear that all you can do as DEFENCE is to blow up black and brown people and destroy the environment. #getthesax. • First British coronavirus death confirmed

    First British coronavirus death confirmed

According to reports in Japan, a British man has died after contracting coronavirus on board the Diamond Princess cruise ship quarantined off the coast of Japan.

With the latest reports, a total of six persons have now died after the cruise liner was put on lockdown just off the port of Yokohama.

However, the death of the British man was confirmed by the Japan Ministry of Health, just hours a female passenger reported to be in her 70s, became the fifth person to die on the ship.

The Foreign Office said it was aware of the report but yet to confirm it.

The cruise ship has been stranded near Tokyo for weeks, since February 3, amid fears the coronavirus would spread after a passenger who got off the ship in Hong Kong reportedly tested positive for the virus.

In an effort to halt the spread of the virus onboard the cruise ship, passengers have been required to stay in their rooms since February 5, the health ministry said in a previous statement.

Health Minister Jo Churchill has said she was aware a British man who had been on board the Diamond Princess cruise ship was “very poorly”.

She told BBC Radio 4’s World At One programme: “The Foreign Office are supporting the family of a British man who has been very poorly and was a passenger on board the Diamond Princess.

“I haven’t had confirmation, because obviously I’m on the telephone to you, but I was aware there was a gentleman who was very, very poorly, and I’m sure like me your thoughts and sympathies go out to his family at this time.”
