18-year-old girl strangled to death few hours after receiving call from boyfriend

An 18-year old girl identified as Favour Ogheneyenrowho, has been reportedly strangled to death by suspected ritualists in Abraka, Ethiope-East council area of Delta State.

The incident has thrown the community into serious tension.

According to eyewitness accounts, the victim’s pubic hairs were shaved off before she was murdered and her remains kept in a “Ghana-must-Go” bag which was disposed at a dump site behind Ozoro park in the town.

Witnesses said there were violent marks around her neck area, indicating that she was violently strangulated.

Ogheneyenrowho hailed from Ughere in Abraka Community.

Recounting the incident leading to the teenager’s demise, Maureen Sunday, her elder sister, told the police that Favour, had received a call from a male at about 10 a.m, requesting that she met him at the Abraka park.

She however replied the caller that she was going to the market with her elder sister.

Miss Sunday added that on their way out of their residence located along Winners Road, a young man, whom she had never seen before (whom she believed was the same person that called her sister earlier), boarded a motorcycle that stopped at the junction and approached them.

A short conversation ensued between them and her late sister, Favour, joined him on the bike and they rode off, even as she called after her to return early.

Unfortunately, it was the shocking news of her sister, dead and tied with ropes in a sack, that reached her the following day.

When reached for confirmation, the Delta State Police Commissioner, Mr Adeyinka Adeleke, explained that what had been discovered so far revealed that the killing of the victim was more of a murder case and not ritual killing.

The police boss also revealed that the suspected killer, who is believed to be Favour’s boyfriend, has since been on the run, adding that the state police command was already on his trial.

Explaining the circumstances around the killing of Favour, CP Adeleke said “”the lady in question was with the sister and she had a call. When she wanted to leave, she told her sister that it’s her boyfriend that she wanted to go and see.

“After some time she disappeared, they did not see her. The next day they saw her body tied in a sack in a plantain/ banana plantation and her boyfriend runaway.

“So it is not a ritual, but a murder case. The physical sign in her body shows in the neck that she was strangulated. Maybe somebody tempered with her neck and throw her body into the bush and now the boyfriend disappeared till now. He is on the run.

“If he had nothing to do with what happened, why did he disappeared? Why is he on the run? That is exactly what happened; not ritual killing, but a case of murder. Her body has been taken to the mortuary,” he explained.

The police also arrested Usman’s mother, Hafasat Aliyu.

  • UAE court sentences eight Nigerians to death for robbery

UAE court sentences eight Nigerians to death for robbery

Eight Nigerians have joined the death row in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) after a court in Sharjah sentenced them to death for a string of armed robberies at money exchanges and cash machines across the emirate in December 2016.

A ninth man was sentenced to six months imprisonment for being in possession of stolen money.

He is expected to be deported after serving his sentence, according to Gulf News.

The convicts were not named but the newspaper said a total of 20 suspects were originally arrested for attacking security guards in four violent attacks at ATMs and money exchanges across Sharjah in late 2016.

They threatened and assaulted staff and members of the public with bladed weapons in a spate of robberies, three of which were carried out on December 18, 2016.

The gang — who were all in the UAE on visit visas — were said to be highly organised and plotted a string of orchestrated attacks to ambush security trucks that were transporting money boxes to and from ATMs, and at least one money exchange in Sharjah.

The first robbery took place at a Dubai Commercial Bank ATM on King Abdul Aziz Street where Dh340,000 was stolen, then two days later they attacked an ATM in Al Safeer Mall in Al Nahda fleeing with Dh700,000, and an ATM in Muweilah where they stole Dh710,000. A fourth attack at a money exchange office near National Paints was foiled by police.

The police were able to recognise the suspects through surveillance footage captured at the exchange house in the mall.

Video footage showed the convicts attacking security guards, making off with cash, and in one of the robberies slashing the hands of a security guard with a knife before running away with money boxes.

Reacting to the death sentence passed on the eight Nigerians yesterday, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Foreign Affairs and Diaspora, Mrs Abike Dabiri-Erewa, described it as unfortunate.

In a statement made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja yesterday, the presidential aide said the incident was not an actual description of the personalities of the people of Nigeria.

She said: “It is an unfortunate incident, but it is not an incident that defines who we are as a people.

If a few Nigerians have committed a crime for which they are being punished, thousands of Nigerians are doing great in that same country and are being appreciated and celebrated.

Mr President who meets Nigerians every time he goes on official trips outside the country always appeals to them to be good ambassadors wherever they are.

I must commend millions of our brothers and sisters excelling all over the world.

Bad news travels fast, and I appeal to the media to help spread the good news about Nigerians and not concentrate only on the once-in-a-while negative stories.”

All the convicted Nigerians were not identified by both the Gulf News and Khaleej Times, both UAE local newspapers, which reported the trial.

A total of 20 suspects were initially held for attacking security guards in four violent attacks at ATMs and money exchanges across Sharjah in late 2016.

Out of the suspects, nine were convicted.

The verdict was handed down by Judge Majid Al Muhairi of Sharjah Criminal Court on Wednesday.

  • Taraba residents flee over death of soldiers

Residents of Shinkai Village in Wukari Local Government Area of Taraba State have fled their homes following a threat to raze down the village over the alleged killing of a soldier.

According to Malam Labaran Abdu, the leader of the community, armed men in military uniform stormed the village on Sunday, March 24, 2019, and alleged that one of their men was killed in the suburb of Shinkai and his rifle taken away.

“The community leaders in Shinkai told the armed men that they knew nothing about the incident, but they threatened that they will wipe off the village if the killers and the stolen rifle were not produced within three days,”

Abdul told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), on Tuesday.

“As a result of the threat, residents of Shinkai and surrounding villages have crossed over to Awe, Tunga, Terkura and Lafiya in the neighbouring Nassarawa State to take refuge,” he said.

Labaran said that the incident the armed men claimed had led to the death of their member took place about 15 kilometre away from Shinkai, and wondered why the people of Shinkai should be made to bear the burden.

Reacting to the incident, Mr Simon Dogari, Taraba information commissioner, told NAN that he had received reports that there was tension in Shinkai village after a clash between herdsmen and some armed men believed to be soldiers from “Operation Whirl stroke”, who were on special patrol from neighboring Benue State.

He said that the report had claimed that there was a clash between the two groups which left ‘one man with uniform dead”.

Dogari, however, wondered why the suspected military personnel, whose operational area was Benue, had crossed into Taraba and clashed with herdsmen.

He said that a Special Adviser to Governor Darius Ishaku, and the Chairman of Wukari Local Government Area, have been asked to investigate the issue and report back.

The Commissioner appealed to the people of Shinkai and its environs to remain calm as the state government was working round the clock to nip the problem in the bud.

Similarly, Mr Bala Dan-Abu, the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor of Taraba on media, who described the death of the military man as unfortunate, urged the authorities to follow due process in redressing the issue.

“Two wrongs cannot make a right; instead of attacking the village, thorough investigation should be carried out to identity the suspected killers.”

He called for calm among all concerned, saying that all hands were on deck toward resolving the matter through dialogue.

Efforts to speak with the Police authorities in Taraba proved abortive, but a senior official of the command said that the matter was being investigated.

  • I fear things more than I fear death- Made Kuti

Made Kuti, son of Afrobeat singer, Femi Kuti has revealed that he fears things more than death.

The youngster who recently joined his father’s band as a bassist in 2018, said he is not afraid of challenging the status quo.

“It’s not that I don’t feel fear but there are very few things that scare me. One thing that you learn to accept growing up as an Anikulapo is to accept death and that’s the biggest fear. We accept that its a possibility to move on to something else after we die but nobody knows for sure,” he said in a chat with Pop ‘N’ Goss.

“That I will die not contributing to society and I will see my siblings and children suffer, that is a bigger fear for me. I fear things more than I fear death. So I am not afraid of challenging the status quo, what I am afraid of is making a mistake when I am doing it.”

Made, who is also the grandson of late Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, got a place in his father’s band after the former bassist absconded.

“I thought I would spend the first year or two working on my own album, getting my things together but as I came back, the first thing that happened, the bassist in my dad’s band ran away so when it happened, I knew that it was an opportunity for me to play for one of the biggest bands out of Africa.”
