  • I’m learning more about my father in death —Anenih Jr

Mr Tony Anenih Jr, the eldest son of the late chief Tony Anenih, said on Saturday that he was learning more about his father after his death.

The younger Anenih said this on Saturday in his tribute after the funeral rite at the St Anthony Catholic Cathedral, Uromi.

According to him, the late Anenih was “a man he was proud to call his father, a man he knew too well, but surprisingly learning more about in death.’’

He said this was through heartwarming anecdotes from people within and outside the country.

A man who believed that good education was the guaranteed route to a successful life; to him, it was the most important investment,’’ he said.

President Muhammadu Buhari in his tribute said that the late Anenih’s demise had left a gap in the social and political landscape which would be difficult to fill.

Buhari, represented by Dr Osagie Ehanire, Minister of State for Health, said Anenih was an accomplished statesman with a well-earned reputation as a consummate political facilitator.

He also said the deceased was a solver of problems no matter how intractable and a fiercely loyal individual who stayed steadfast to any cause he adopted.

In his tribute, Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State said that the late Anenih was a quintessential politician who the state was proud of.

  • Reps to probe death of Offa robbery key suspect

Reps to probe death of Offa robbery key suspect

    By Gabriel Okoro, Abuja

The House of Representatives on Thursday mandated its Committees on Police Affairs, Human Rights and Justice to carry out an investigative hearing into the facts surrounding the time and circumstances of the death of the Offa robbery key suspect, Michael Adikwu and report back in four weeks.

The House charge the Committee to uncover the issues and questions as to when the suspect died, how he died, why the police denied the facts of his death, at what point the police leadership discovered the death of the suspect and why the police are covering up the facts.

These resolution were sequel to a motion sponsored by Mr. Zakari Mohammed (PDP, Kwara) under matters of urgent national importance of the plenary session.

Explaining the motion, Mr. Mohammed revealed that the police initially confirmed to the Attorney General of Kwara State through the Police Public Relations Officer – Moshood Jimoh that the principal was alive and in custody and was helping the police in the investigations of the robbery that led to the killing of 22 people and recovery of firearms that were carted away.

He added that it took the police so long to make the disclosure about the death of the principal after denying its veracity as was reported in the media.

The lawmaker expressed worry that there have been inconsistencies in the various statements by the police and the possible cover up of this extra-judicial killing with the aim of tarnishing the image of some innocent individuals for political purposes.

According to him, the fundamental duty of the police is to protect lives and property of all citizens irrespective of political affiliation.

Mohammed further stressed that “It is the constitutional duty of this hallowed chamber to take action wherever such level of irresponsibility and recklessness of an important law enforcement agency such as the police have arisen in the course of investigations into a vicious crime”.

The motion which unanimously scaled through without debate due to its probe nature as requested by the Speaker, Yakubu Dogara who presided, will unravel rights abuse, extra-judicial killings and manipulation of criminal investigation by the police.

Recall that on the 5th of April, 2018, six robbery suspects led by one Michael Adikwu attacked five commercial banks in Offa, Kwara State. No fewer than 32 victims were recorded in the unfortunate attack.

  • Offa robbery: Saraki seeks inquiry into key suspect death

Offa robbery: Saraki seeks inquiry into key suspect death

Senate President Bukola Saraki yesterday asked the Presidency to institute a judicial inquiry into the death of the principal suspect in the April 5 Offa bank robbery, Michael Adikwu.

He said the inquiry should be constituted to determine “how and when the suspect died.”

The Senate President in a statement by his Special Adviser (Media and Publicity), Yusuph Olaniyonu, noted that the disclosure by the Police vindicated his earlier claim that the suspect had been killed in police custody and that the investigation was politically motivated to implicate him (Saraki), Governor Abdulfatai Ahmed and a few others.

He said the inquiry would help to examine and interrogate how the investigation into the robbery was conducted by the Police and whether the investigation followed the normal process and complied with global best practices.

Dr. Saraki added that the Police needed to confirm why it took them so long to make the disclosure about the death of the principal suspect after they denied it at the time he (Saraki) disclosed the information and it was reported in the media.

He said: “It should be recalled that when we mentioned it that the principal suspect had been murdered and that investigation into the Offa robbery was politically motivated and targeted at implicating me and other individuals, the Police Public Relations Officer, Moshood Jimoh, said: ‘Michael Adikwu is in police custody. You know that he is the one that led the killing of 22 people. The firearms that were carted away, he is helping the police in the investigation to recover them. There is a state in the Southwest where they kept him. I can’t mention the state. It is in one of the Southwest states’.

“The fresh facts have now thrown more light into why there had been inconsistencies in the statements by the Police. The Police initially told the Attorney-General of Kwara State that the principal suspect was alive and they only later reluctantly disclosed that he died in the course of arrest. How can a suspect confirmed to be in custody now be said to have died in the course of arrest? This contradiction shows a deliberate attempt to cover up something.

“It is obvious that the police have orchestrated the information they give to the public on the Offa robbery only to tarnish the image of the Kwara State governor and myself. We are calling for a public inquiry to probe the issues of extra-judicial killing, the cover-up of this killing with the aim of framing up some individuals for political purpose and politicising of criminal investigations. The facts need to be laid bare.

“The inquiry may help to further document and define the terms of handling of suspects in police custody and how to prevent extra-judicial killing of suspects, for whatever purpose. There is need for transparency in investigations into all cases and our methods should comply with global standards. We should discourage situations where the police politicise investigations and deliberately set out to frame up some individuals.

“With the facts on ground, the issues that should be unearthed by the inquiry include: When exactly did the suspect die? How did he die? Why was the police denying the facts of his death when they knew he had died? At what point did the Police leadership know of the death? Why are the police covering up the facts? We believe the answer to these questions will help the country to address the issue of human rights abuse, extra-judicial killing, manipulation of criminal investigation to achieve political end, deliberate attempt to cover up some facts and how skewed investigation of crime can impact on successful prosecution of suspects.”

Saraki said now that the police have begun prosecution of the remaining suspects, there should be diligent and prompt prosecution so that justice can be transparently done to the victims of the Offa robbery and the accused persons.

  • How Femi Adebayo escaped death

    How Femi Adebayo escaped death

Ace actor and filmmaker, Femi Adebayo narrowly escaped death on Thursday (today) 8th of November 2018.

Unknown gunmen attacked his car, trying to gain access to it. The sad incident occurred around CMD road Magodo Lagos

It is not yet clear whether the gunmen were hired assassins, or armed robbers, but the grateful actor took to his Instagram page to recount the incident.

“I thank God for his protection over me and mine. I know my job comes with its risk. Working as an Actor and Politician requires my regular movement.Today, Just at the U turn coming from CMD Magodo around 7UP heading towards Ojota, my vehicle was accosted by men in a Toyota Corolla. They crossed my vehicle at the U Turn. 2 men alighted from the vehicle bearing AK47s. They tried to force the doors open. They kept hitting my car with the butt of their gun. In the process, they broke the door handle and left dents on different parts of my vehicle.

“All these happened in full view of other vehicles and other individuals passing by. In the short time this happened, no one came to help. The guys were obviously not Policemen, they didn’t wear any Insigna of the force. They wore plain clothes and had extra guts to perform this act during the day at about 12 noon.

“Their assumption will have been that I was in the vehicle but my driver was the only one enroute to my location. With swiftness, he was able to maneuver and speed off. I thank God for keeping him. We are all still shocked at this but grateful to God that no life was lost in the process”, he revealed .

  • Ogun govt speaks on Ernest Shonekan’s ‘death’

The Ogun State Government on Tuesday evening denied the rumoured demise of Ernest Shonekan, former Head of Interim National Government of Nigeria, saying the rumour is far from being true.
The news of the death of former Head of Interim National Government of Nigeria who succeeded Ex Military President Ibrahim Babangida in 1994 after the Military Government had failed to hand over government to Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola, acclaimed winner of 1993 Presidential Election, adjudged to be most credible, freest and fairest election in the country.
Although, attempts by several journalists in Abeokuta, the country home of Ernest Shonekan, whose his mansion is a stone throw distance to Ogun NUJ Secretariat, Iwe Irohin House, along the popular Oke-Ilewo road in Abeokuta to confirm the authenticity of the news were futile as nobody could ascertain it, the call from Ogun state government showed that the man is alive.

  • Resetting diplomatic ties with China over death capsules – Phillip Afaha

Resetting diplomatic ties with China over death capsules – Phillip Afaha

    By Philip Afaha
Last week Nigerians woke up to the sordid news that china has chosen to export cannibalism to Nigeria.
Whatever informed their choice of Nigeria as the destination for such bestiality is not known to us, but one is wont to conclude that the world has started to take advantage of our weakness, cowardice and apparent lack of knowledge of how the current civilisation works- you either upgrade or dominate, or you will be dominated by others.
The recent cargoes of human remains as capsules and stew represent the worst insult we should accept as a people. Come to think of this, China grind her death bodies into powder and sell to us as drugs?, China makes stew of her embalmed corpses and ship to us for our meals?. We now know where the cancers are coming from.
It appears cancer and indeed most of the dangerous diseases ravaging the African economies and populations may actually be manifestations of biological weapon attacks on black Africans by the developed world. The idea could be to destroy their economies, damage their resolve to break even, offer palliatives and take over their resources.
One may be accused of provoking a conspiracy theory or some anti-China sentiments, but across the length and breadth of Africa there are cries of the new colonialism by China. The stark reality is that China is desperately pushing into Africa with reckless abandon.
Their recent moves is only reminiscent of the 1885 scramble and partition experience that resulted in the colonialism and bastardization of Africa.
In some countries there are stories of total take-over of public utilities and governance infrastructures as political leaders fall over one another to get loans and financial favours from Beijing.
This craze for Chinese monies comes against the warnings from the intelligentsia and the western world who see through the traps and long term imperialistic motifs of these gestures.
China has proven that it is not a fair trader, not even when it is dealing with weaker states. China is taking undue advantage of the sorry state of affairs and instability in Africa to take its turn in the rape that was initiated by the Caucasian cousins some in form of slave trade and slavery some centuries ago.
The aggressive manner with which china seeks to exert its influence in Africa should be taken with a pinch of caution. Those who think that china is a father chrismas are wallowing in destructive self deceit.
It is instructive that the Trump administration has repeatedly alerted the world and challenged the Chinese foul tactics when it comes to trade. With the recent happenings in Africa there appears to be a sense in the American posture.
The latest trade in human flesh should alert the developing world of the dangers of swallowing the financial baits and allowing the Chinese to have a field day in their trade relations.
The United States of America is resetting their trade terms with china ostensibly to forestall a similar decline to infamy as the Nigerian case.
It is an irony that while china will be the first country to flout rules and abuse free market; it is on record that it is the most difficult country to export to.
It operates the harshest and draconian regulations to protect its market and domestic products. It is sad that the same offence that earns Nigerians death sentences and life imprisonment in china are the same things Chinese are perpetrating and walking free in Nigeria.
The Nigerian government should not pride itself that it has issued public warning on the human stew and capsules from china.
Government should not feign ignorance of this scandal or treat it with the usual callously the way it brushed off the plastic rice saga, fake drugs and claims of organ harvesting of young Nigerians by Asians that is now dominating the social media.
The Chinese ambassador to Nigeria should be summoned to explain this evil, and stop further shipment of products that insults our culture and endangers our health as a people. Customarily the Ambassador will try to absolve Beijing of culpability and blame such on rogue merchants but at least a strong government-to-government message would have been sent to China and her people that Nigeria rejects and frowns at such abuse of the Nigerian people. That is the hallmark of citizen diplomacy
Nigerians will not forgive China if they fail to stop this abomination from their end, and we will not equally forgive our leaders if they fail or even delay to call China to order.
The Indo-Nigerian relation is a good thing but international trade should be conducted with some modicum of morality, and diplomacy demands mutual respect.
The Nigerian government should stand up to china on this saga. China must at least pretend to show respect. We are not cannibals!
    Enough of this rape.
