  • MMM announces final shutdown over founder’s death

…Says it initially warned participants of the risks involved

Sequel to the death of its founder, the management of the global ponzi scheme, Mavrodi Mundial Moneybox (MMM) on Friday announced a final shut down of operations.

The ponzi scheme made the announcement on its official global website on Friday.

Recall that the founder, Sergey Mavrodi, died of heart attack on March 26.

The scheme, which collapsed over a year ago in many countries including Nigeria, has been a subject of controversy globally.

Mavrodi launched his controversial scheme in 2011 and crashed in Nigeria in December 2016; with millions of Naira belonging to Nigerians trapped in the scheme.

Although the scheme announced a comeback in 2017, it could not launch operation before the renewed enthusiasm among its members fizzled out.

On Friday, the scheme said continuous operation without Mr. Mavrodi made no sense.

Dear participants, after much deliberation, we have made the conclusion that continuing the System operation, without our leader and ideological inspire, is impossible and makes no sense,” the statement read in part.

We all carried out the tasks he assigned to us, since we had no doubt in his genius and rightness of the path he had chosen. We are firmly aware of the fact that none of us has a full view of his conception’s profoundness and sequence of all the actions to achieve a final goal, declared in the “MMM’s Ideology”.

Sergey Mavrodi’s broadmindedness scale is unprecedented. Therefore any attempts to continue the System operation without him are bound to fail. We respect him immeasurably and cannot afford to allow that our unskilled actions may cause profanation of his concepts.”

The scheme, which said members were aware of the risks involved initially, therefore announced final closure.

In view of the above, with deep sadness, we have to announce the ultimate and irreversible MMM closure.

We also remind (as a matter of form) that all initially were fully aware of the risks and read the WARNING and confirmed that by checking the relevant box when registering.

Hoping for your understanding, Administration,” the statement reads.

Sad: Nigerian teen stabbed to death in London

An 18-year-old Nigerian, Israel Ogunsola, was stabbed to death on Wednesday night in Hackney, London.

Ogunsola is said to have approached Police with his knife wounds shortly before 8 pm on Wednesday, following the attack, SkyNews states.

Officers rushed to his aid in Link Street, in the east London borough.

Paramedics and staff from the London Air Ambulance attempted to save his life but he was pronounced dead at the scene less than half an hour later.

This is coming shortly after the son of a Nigerian lawmaker, 26-year-old Abraham Badru, was shot dead in the same area in London.

Two 17-year-olds have been arrested on suspicion of murdering Ogunsola, the Metropolitan Police said. They were held on Wednesday night.

The teenager’s father, Dele Ogunsola, who lives in the nearby Jack Dunning Estate, confirmed on Thursday afternoon that his son had died.

The deceased, who was studying computer programming, was described by his dad as “academically brilliant.”

The father of London’s latest knife crime victim today demanded that the “bloodshed must stop,” saying that his son was just cycling to meet friends when he was stabbed to death last night.

Ogunsola, 55, a customer services administrator, said: “My son was a well brought up boy who respected everyone and was liked by all and sundry.

“The bloodshed must stop. London’s streets are so dangerous. Young people are being slaughtered every day.

“If it means bringing back more stop-and-search, then so be it. We have to tackle this problem and the government needs to do more.”

  • Woman beats step-daughter to death in Imo

The Imo State Police Command has arrested a woman, Mrs. Prisca David, for allegedly killing her stepdaughter, Veronica David.

The incident happened on Friday at Ogwuaga-Abba, in the Nwangele Local Government Area of Imo State

A resident, Chima Egbu, narrating the incident said Prisca beat the 13-year-old to death, after which she called her husband, who also joined in the assault and connived with her to tie a rope around her neck to create an impression of suicide.

He said, “The man got married to Prisca after the girl’s mother died. They had always maltreated the girl. They were beating her that Friday morning as usual when she slumped and died.

“In a bid to escape justice, the husband called John to help them to tie a rope around the girl’s neck so that people would think the girl committed suicide.

“But neighbours, who suspected foul play, alerted the police at the Nwangele divisional headquarters. The couple were arrested and the corpse retrieved. The third suspect, John, was later arrested.”

Ozugbo, the landlord of the deceased confirming the development to Punch on Sunday, said he was alerted by a resident that the wife of his security guard, Prisca, allegedly murdered her stepdaughter.

He said he contacted policemen at Nwangele, who immediately arrested the suspects and recovered the corpse.

“My security guard called me that his daughter committed suicide and he needed me to pay his salary in advance so he could take her corpse to Taraba for burial. I was worried about how a 13-year-old girl would take her own life.

“On enquiry, I was told that his wife, Prisca, hit a plank on the girl’s head and she died. A boy in the compound told me that he saw the woman when she did it.

“I quickly involved the police and the couple were arrested. The boy who said he saw the woman kill her stepdaughter went with them to the police station to put it in writing. The corpse is ready for autopsy. I will ensure that justice is served,” Ozugbo said.

When contacted, the state Commissioner of Police, Chris Ezike, said he had ordered the homicide section of the command to take over the matter.

  • Court remands husband for allegedly beating wife to death

An Ebute Meta Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos State on Tuesday remanded Godwin Alawa for alleged murder of his wife, Victoria Edet, 42.

Alawa, 48, who appeared on a charge of murder, is to remain behind bars pending advice from the Lagos State Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

    His plea was not taken.

Sgt. Kehinde Omisakin had earlier told the court that Alawa committed the offence on Feb. 11, at No. 16, Budland St., Ojodu.

She said Alawa was in the habit of beating the deceased, and on the said date, he allegedly beat Victoria to death.

The offences contravened Section 223 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 which prescribes death sentence if found guilty.

The Chief Magistrate, Mrs A.O. Komolafe, ordered that Alawa should be kept behind bars and adjourned until April 16 for receipt of advice.

  • We lose 9,028 officers annually to death, dismissal, retirement – IG

The Inspector General of Police ( IGP), Mr Ibrahim Idris says the Nigeria Police Force loses 9,028 officers to death, dismissal, and retirement annually.

Idris made the disclosure at the monthly meeting with Commissioners of Police and other top-ranking officers of the force on Wednesday in Abuja.

The IGP said that the development had seriously affected the manpower of the force.

He noted that the 308, 000 police workforce was grossly inadequate for the effective policing of the more than 180 million people in the country.

The police boss said that the country was far below the UN standard of one policeman to 400 persons adding that the Federal Government had approved the recruitment of 6,000 policemen into the rank and file.

“The issue of manpower is one problem the Nigeria Police Force is facing,” he said.

On the attachment of policemen to private persons, Idris said that the force would review it to ensure that they worked for the general public.

“There is a need for us to have a police that will work for the generality of Nigerians,” he said.

He said that he had directed police commissioners and zonal Assistant Inspectors-General of Police, to compile the number of policemen attached to individuals in the country.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that President Muhammadu Buhari in 2015 directed that police personnel attached to unauthorized and some prominent persons in the country be withdrawn and deployed to confront the security challenges in the nation.

The Chairman, Police Service Commission (PSC), Mr Mike Okiro, said that more than 150,000 policemen were attached to unauthorized persons and Very Important Personalities (VIPs) in the country.

He said that the meeting was aimed at having a comprehensive resolution on the issue of illegal firearms in the country.

Idris noted that the alleged arming of militia groups by state governments and individuals was not in the interest of the country.

He urged the commissioners of police to embark on campaign against illegal firearms in their various commands.

Idris said that plans were underway to construct an armoury for the storage of illegal firearms seized from militias across the country.

He said that the force had taken several measures to check security challenges across the country.

  • Seven in 10 deaths caused by non-communicable diseases – WHO

About seven in ten deaths annually are caused by Non Communicable Diseases, NCD, the World Health Organisation (WHO) has said.

The international health agency in a press statement issued on Friday said more than 15 million people between the ages of 30 and 70 die from NCDs annually.

Examples of diseases in these category are: heart and lung diseases, cancer, and diabetes. The major contributing agents of these diseases are tobacco use, harmful use of alcohol, unhealthy diets, and physical inactivity.

According to the WHO, half of the premature deaths from NCDs occur in low and lower-middle income countries and more people are increasingly affected.

According to the Nigerian federal ministry health, more Nigerians are now living with NCD and urgent attention needs to be taken on how to reduce their prevalence, especially diabetes.

About 415 million people have diabetes and more than 14 million of them live in sub-Saharan Africa. By 2040, these figures are expected to double. According to the International Diabetes Foundation, as at 2015, there were more than1.56 million cases of diabetes in Nigeria.

To address the problem of NCDs, the WHO is announcing a new high level commission comprising of heads of states and ministers, leaders in health and development and entrepreneurs.

Many lives can be saved from NCDs through early diagnosis and improved access to quality and affordable treatment, as well as steps to reduce the main risk factors, said the agency.

To address the issue, the WHO has constituted an Independent Global Commission on NCDs co-chaired by the Uruguay President, Tabaré Vázquez; President Maithripala Sirisena of Sri Lanka; President Sauli Niinistö of Finland; Veronika Skvortsova, Minister of Healthcare of the Russian Federation; and Sania Nishtar, former federal minister of Pakistan.

The commission is expected to propose bold and innovative solutions to accelerate prevention and control of non-communicable diseases.

Mr. Vázquez said NCDs are the world’s leading avoidable killers but the world is not doing enough to prevent and control them.

We have to ask ourselves if we want to condemn future generations from dying too young, and living lives of ill health and lost opportunity. The answer clearly is ‘no’. But, there is so much we can do to safeguard and care for people, from protecting everyone from tobacco, harmful use of alcohol, and unhealthy foods and sugary drinks, to giving people the health services they need to stop NCDs in their tracks,” he said.
