  • Lassa fever: Nigeria records 67 cases, 16 deaths in January – NCDC

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has said so far, in January 2018 alone, Nigeria has recorded 16 deaths from 61 confirmed cases of Lassa fever across the country.

The NCDC in a press statement released on Wednesday said a total number of 107 suspected cases has been recorded in ten states across the country.

The states are Edo, Ondo, Bauchi, Nasarawa, Ebonyi, Anambra, Benue, Kogi, Imo and Lagos.

According to the health agency, as at January 21, ten out of the 61 confirmed cases were health care workers from four states Ebonyi- 7 , Nasarawa -1 , Kogi- 1 and Benue -1 out of which four are now deceased.

Health workers are most times secondary victims who get infected while treating patients with the disease.

Between 2005 and 2018, the infection claimed over 40 health workers in Ebonyi according to the state chapter of the Nigerian medical Association, NMA.

The Minister of Health, Isaac Adewole, on Tuesday warned all health professionals to investigate every case of fever before treatment.

Mr. Adewole said every fever must be investigated properly and treated appropriately. He said no one should treat malaria without diagnosis.

The Executive Director, NCDC, Chikwe Ihekweazu also advised health workers along same line urging them to practice standard precautions at all times.

He said health workers should maintain a high index of suspicion while treating patients with aliments which presents malaria symptoms because Lassa fever appears initially like any other disease, causing a febrile illness such as malaria.

Mr. Ihekweazu said Rapid Diagnostic Test, RDT must be applied to all suspected cases of malaria.

When the RDT is negative, other causes of febrile illness including Lassa fever should be considered. Accurate diagnosis and prompt treatment increase the chances of survival,” he said.

Lassa fever is an acute viral haemorrhagic illness, transmitted to humans through contact with food or household items contaminated by infected rodents.

Person-to-person transmission can also occur, particularly in hospital environment in the absence of adequate infection control measures.

Lassa fever can be prevented through practicing good personal hygiene and proper environmental sanitation.

Effective measures include storing grain and other foodstuffs in rodent-proof containers, disposing of garbage far from the home, maintaining clean households, and other measures to discourage rodents from entering homes.

Hand washing should also be practiced frequently.

Efforts to speak to officials of the state Ministry Education and state Fire Service were unsuccessful as they failed to pick phone calls and did not reply text messages.

  • Police arrest Lagos traditional ruler for allegedly crushing wife to death with Jeep

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a traditional ruler identified as Taibu Ogunbanjo in Ise Town in Ibeju Lekki area of the state for allegedly crushing his wife to death with his Jeep.

The baale runs a block-moulding factory at Folu, a community in Ibeju Lekki.

According to a report by The Punch, the baale and his wife, Rotimi Ogunbanjo, got married three years ago, but the marriage had been fraught with misunderstanding and fights.

On Thursday, December 7, 2017, the couple reportedly had a disagreement. After the altercation, Rotimi was said to have gone to the baale’s factory and damaged some blocks on the premises.

Taibu reportedly entered his Toyota Highlander, and was driving out of the premises in anger when he knocked down his wife.

A community leader, who identified himself simply as Akinsipe, said the wife died on the spot, adding that the corpse had been deposited at the Epe General Hospital.

He said, “He (Taibu) is the baale of the community. He and his wife had been having issues since they got married. I did not know what actually happened between them on that day, but I learnt that they had a disagreement in the morning.

“She went to his block factory and destroyed some blocks arranged on the premises. He entered his vehicle angrily and as he was driving out of the premises, the wife tried to stop him. He hit her and she died on the spot.”

Akinsipe stated that the matter was reported at the Akodo Police Station, adding that the baale had been arrested.

A police source confided in newsmen that the suspect’s family reported at the police station that the death resulted from an accident.

The source said, “The baale and the woman got married three years ago without a child and they had been having disagreements. On that particular day, she destroyed some blocks at the industry. The man became angry and as he was driving out, he crushed her with his vehicle on the factory premises.

“The relations of the suspect have said that it was a case of an accident. But looking at the circumstances surrounding the incident, the accident claim is untenable.

“He could not have lost control of the vehicle on the premises as a result of speeding. There is a limit to the speed the car can go on the premises.”

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Chike Oti, who confirmed Rotimi’s death, said the command would investigate the matter to unravel the motive behind the baale’s action.

He said, “We are investigating the matter to find out what transpired between the man and his wife before the incident happened. They were having family issues, which led the woman to the block industry to destroy things.

“We want to know whether what the man did was a reaction to what his wife did. We believe there is more to the ‘accident’ than meets the eye because there was an altercation between them before the incident occured.”

The PPRO added that the case had been transferred to the Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, Yaba.

  • Court sentences man to death for raping housemaid

A special court has sentenced an Indian businessman and his domestic help to death for the brutal rape and murder of a 25-year-old housemaid in their home in Noida city on the outskirts of the national capital in 2006.

The court of India’s Central Bureau of Investigation pronounced the quantum of punishment, a day after holding businessman Maninder Pandher and his aide Surinder Koli guilty in the crime they had committed in their house in Nithari village in Noida.

This was the ninth of a total of 16 cases in the macabre serial killings that took place in Nithari in 2005 and 2006.

While Koli has been found guilty in the earlier eight cases and awarded death penalty, Pandher was convicted in three cases and sentenced to death in two.

Handing down the punishment in the latest case, special CBI judge P.K. Tiwari said both Koli and Pandher were involved in the rape and murder of housemaid Anjali in 2006, and they deserved to be punished in the strictest manner.

“Koli had dragged the victim inside the house and made her unconscious, raped her, and then ate her flesh, therefore death sentence is the only option in law.

“Pandher was also involved in the crime. Both will be hanged till death,” the court held.

Anjali, who used to work as a housemaid in Noida, was reported missing in October 2006.

Her killing came to light after Koli’s arrest in December that year when police discovered skulls and bones of 16 persons, mostly children, near Pandher’s house.

The CBI took over the case from the local police subsequently and charge sheets have been filed in 10 out of 16 cases.

The other cases are under trial.

  • Vietnam flood deaths rise to 72 as heavy rains continue

Rescuers have found the bodies of another 13 people following flash floods in Vietnam, raising the death toll to 72, while 33 remain missing, authorities said on Monday.

“Up to 700 millimetres of rain had fallen as the result of a tropical depression over the previous five days in central and northern Vietnam.

“It, however, stopped on Friday, but resumed Sunday night and is continuing through Monday.

“Thirteen of those killed in Hoa Binh province died early on Thursday when their houses were buried by a landslide while they were sleeping,’’ the committee for disaster prevention said.

The committee added that five people were still missing in that incident.

According to reports, almost 50,000 homes were still submerged across the centre and north of the country, while floods destroyed bridges and roads, isolating many areas, and several dams have burst.

Some 9,300 pigs, cows and buffalo have been killed, as well as nearly 300,000 poultry.

The National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting has warned that more landslides could hit the country’s mountainous central and northern regions, as the land had absorbed too much water.

“More carnage is also expected as Vietnam braces for Tropical Storm Khanun, which is moving in from the South China Sea,’’ the centre said.

It added that it is expected to weaken to a tropical depression in the Gulf of Tonkin on Monday.

“Authorities have instructed 75,000 fishing boats with over 300,000 fishermen to dock at ports or move out of dangerous areas in the South China Sea,’’ the disaster prevention committee said. (dpa/NAN)

  • Migrant deaths under reported – IOM

Migrant deaths under reported – IOM

The International Organisation for Migration, IOM, said on Monday the real number of migrant deaths were far higher than the numbers reported.

The UN Migration Agency in a new report on migrant deaths and disappearances worldwide through its Berlin-based Global Migration Data Analysis Centre said many migrant deaths were never recorded.

Since 2014, more than 23,000 migrant deaths and disappearances have been recorded globally by the IOM. The real number is likely to be much higher as many deaths are never recorded,” IOM said.

The report is the third volume in IOM’s Fatal Journeys series, which focuses on how to improve data on missing migrants in order to prevent further deaths, and to enable the families left behind to learn more about the fate of their relatives.

Many families continue to spend years living in limbo, not knowing whether a loved one is alive or dead as so few bodies of missing migrants are identified,” the UN migration agency said.

Fatal Journeys Volume 3: Improving Data on Missing Migrants is published in two parts with part one of the report released on Monday, examining the challenges of collecting data on missing migrants.

Part two of the report to be released in November, provides in-depth regional analysis of the data currently available, IOM said.

The first chapter of Fatal Journeys Volume 3 – Part 1 provided an update of data on global migrant fatalities since 2014, and highlighted the risks faced by migrant women and children.

Data collected by IOM’s ‘Missing Migrants Project’, the only existing database on migrant deaths at the global level, are used to present the known number and profile of dead and missing migrants in different regions of the world.

The report said that much more could be done to gather data to increase identification rates such as developing intraregional mechanisms to share data more effectively.

One approach highlighted in the report was the work of forensic teams in Latin America, which had been working together with NGOs and governments to promote the sharing of data to facilitate the identification of missing migrants.

The report underlined that the problems in communicating data could also be observed in global media coverage of migrant deaths and disappearances.

Current standards of media coverage vary widely, and the tone of the content ranges from humanitarian concern to reproduction of negative narratives about migration,” the UN migration agency said.

It said the inclusion of migration in the United Nations’ 2030 Global Agenda for Sustainable Development and the commitment of States to promote safe, orderly and regular migration, required improved data on indicators of “unsafe migration”.

Improving information and reporting on who the missing migrants were, where they came from, and above all, when they were most at risk was crucial to building a holistic response to reduce the number of migrant deaths, IOM said.

  • Assassination claim: ‘I have no interest in your death’, Kashamu fires back at Gbenga Daniel

…says ‘I do not have a killer squad’

The senator representing Ogun East Senatorial District, Buruji Kashamu, has denied the claim by a former Governor of Ogun State, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, that he sent assassins after him.

TheNewsGuru.com reports that Daniel had accused Kashamu in a petition to the Inspector General of Police, Idris Ibrahim, on Friday of sending hired killers after him.

However, in a swift response, Kashamu, in a letter to the IG as well asserted that he did not have a killer squad and he was not interested in the ex-governor’s death.

“I have been in Lagos since the National Assembly went on recess last month. I do not have a killer squad …

“My telephones and call logs are available for scrutiny. It is true that we have had political differences since 2009 after working together for some time. Even at that, not once have I been linked to any form of violence.

“As for me, I have no interest in Daniel’s death or that of any human being. If I engaged him as a sitting governor with tact and intelligence, why would I want to attack or assassinate him now?” he said.

The senator added, “It is part of the grand plot by Daniel to … foist a caretaker committee on the PDP in the state despite the subsisting and binding court judgment which expressly states that the Engr. Adebayo Dayo-led state executive committee – which I belong to – should remain in office till 2020.”

Kashamu stated further that the petition was politically motivated.

“The authentic PDP ExCo in Ogun State under the leadership of Dayo has a final judgment in its favour that has yet to be appealed, set aside or upturned. What is more, the orders and judgment are binding on the police and the Independent National Electoral Commission who were parties to the suit.

“This … story of an attack is part of Daniel’s … bid to seek relevance, revive his … political career …

“He is afraid that some genuine and concerned party members could resist … his actions… despite being aware of the existence of the democratically elected and the judicially approved Ogun State PDP ExCo,” the lawmaker said in the petition.

Also, in the petition, he drew the attention of Idris to previous letters written by Dayo to complain about the activities of Daniel in the state.

“Instead of raising … alarm like Daniel, the Engr. Adebayo Dayo-led State ExCo had written two letters dated August 14 and 15, 2017 to your office, wherein your attention was drawn to the … acts of Daniel and his collaborators and how they could threaten the peace … in Ogun State, if not checked.

“A careful perusal of the two petitions and the attached documents would give you an insight into the undercurrents of this unfounded alarm,” Kashamu stated.
