  • Nobody died of strange disease in LUTH – CMD

The Chief Medical Director, Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Idi-Araba, Prof. Chris Bode, said on Wednesday that nobody died of any “strange disease” linked to Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) in the hospital.

Bode spoke on the reported death of 13 people in the hospital as a result of HPV.

He said no doctor made such claim from this institution and nobody died of any “strange disease” in LUTH.

The CMD said: “HPV does not cause sudden mass deaths in humans.

Medical literature informs us that the human papillomavirus causes a number of diseases in man, and the ordinary wart is the commonest of these.

The virus is also known to cause cancer of the cervix in females, genital cancer and cancer of the throat. Occasionally, it can prevent pregnancy.

The virus is found only in humans and it can be transmitted through sexual contact and infects the anus and genitals.

HPV vaccines can prevent the most common types of infection and it is now recommended to be given to young girls between the ages of 9 and 13 to prevent cervical cancer.’’

The CMD said that though, warts have been documented since the time of ancient Greece, its viral nature was described over a hundred years ago.

It is, therefore, absurd to attribute the discovery of this old disease to any LUTH doctor.

It damages the ethical standards of the Nigerian Medical community when such reckless claims are made,’’ he said.

  • Fayose prayed for Buhari’s death – Herdsmen

    …demands public apology from governor

    …threatens legal action

Fulani Herdsmen, under the aegis of Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association, on Monday accused Governor Ayodele Fayose of praying for the death of President Muhammadu Buhari who returned to the country on Saturday after 103 days in London receiving treatments for undisclosed ailments.

The group also threatened to institute legal action against Fayose for making disparaging and uncomplimentary statements on Buhari’s health.

The National Coordinator of the body, Alhaji Garus Gololo, who disclosed this at a news conference in Makurdi, asked Fayose to immediately tender an unreserved apology to all Nigerians and Buhari, otherwise, Fulani herdsmen would take legal action against him.

Gololo said that Fayose abandoned his constitutional duty of providing good governance to his people, which he was elected for, to attack Buhari while on a hospital bed.

He said, “We MACBA have met at our level here and resolved that the Ekiti State governor should publicly apologise to Nigeria’s President who he had mocked and made several comments he is not morally and professionally supposed to.

“We know that while other Nigerians were praying for PMB quick recovery, Fayose was praying for Mr. President to die. He even went ahead asking people to begin to address him as the next president of Nigeria while Buhari is still alive, but thank God, Buhari did not die.

“So, our president is back to the country to continue with the governance of Nigeria. It is now our turn to demand Fayose to apologize or we will go after him legally.”

He maintained that those who said Buhari is dead have seen him alive addressing Nigerians.

The coordinator welcomed the President back home and reminded him of the need to be focused on the fight against corruption and securing Nigeria from those he described as enemies of progress who do not mean well for this country.

Gololo also sympathised with the Benue State governor, the government and people of the state over the killing of the principal special assistant to the governor on Knowledge economy and investments, Dr. Tavershima Adyorough.

The miscreants, according to residents usually hanged out in a smoking joint in the area.

  • Aisha Buhari calls for joint efforts to eradicate child, maternal death

The Wife of the President, Mrs Aisha Buhari, on Tuesday, called on well-meaning Nigerians and development partners to complement the Federal Government efforts to eradicate preventable child and maternal death.

Buhari made the call while performing the ground breaking ceremony of a 250-bed Specialist Hospital project by the Nigerian Army Officers Wives Association (NOWA) in Asokoro, Abuja.

She was represented by the Senior Special Adviser to the President on Administration, Dr Hajo Sani.

Buhari said that the hospital, when completed, would complement the army’s efforts in providing quality and accessible healthcare services to the personnel and their families, as well as other Nigerians.

“I am happy to note that while men of the Nigerian Army are out there making us proud, curbing insurgency, the army officers’ wives under NAOWA, are implementing programmes toward improving the health and well-being of the families.

“As you are aware, health facilities are important parts of any community. Therefore, for families to live healthy goes beyond provision of clean environment and good nutrition.

“It also includes professional medical advice, diagnosis and prescription which can only be available in the health centres or facilities with qualified medical personnel,’’ she said.

Buhari commended NAOWA for the project, which she said was in line with the Federal Government’s policy on access to quality, efficient and comprehensive healthcare services to all Nigerians.

“This is also in line with my advocacy for the improvement of reproductive, maternal, neonatal, child and adolescent health,’’ she said.

Buhari said that while the death of a mother was a tragedy in itself, it has devastating effect on the surviving child, as well as economic stability of society.

Earlier, the NAOWA President, Mrs Umma-Kalsum Buratai, said that the association had continued to advocate healthy living with emphasis on preventable maternal and child death.

“It is pertinent to note that about 50 per cent of the maternal and child death occurs in our society as a result of lack of access to modern medical care.

“Thousands of Nigerian women die daily from medical conditions that are largely preventable,’’ Buratai said.

She said that the hospital, when completed, would help in preventing obstetric hemorrhage, malaria during pregnancy, breast cancer, cervical cancer, malnutrition and HIV/AIDS, among other ailments.

“We are aware that the military profession is very hazardous.

“The nature of the profession has left many young women as widows, creating challenges for their families in accessing essential amenities and basic healthcare requirement.

“It is in our resolve to complement the existing medical facilities within the barracks community that we are embarking on the construction of an ultra-modern specialist hospital equipped with standard facilities,’’ she said.

The NAOWA president said that the facility would cater for the health needs of the orphans, less privileged, barracks women, children and the surrounding communities.
