Revealed: How Moji Olaiya died in ambulance

Details have emerged on how late actress, Moji Olaiya died. The looks on the faces of those who visited her Magodo Lagos residence depicts sadness and distress.

Speaking with TheNetng, her elder brother Otunba Olaiya said Moji’s death was most unexpected. In his words: “When I spoke to her a few days ago, she did not give signs of death. She never complained about anything. This is really heartbreaking’, he said.

In the same vein, a certain Mrs Keji who said she worked as her housekeeper said in the last three days before she passed away; the actress had placed several calls from her base in Canada to complain of ‘being uncomfortable’.

According to her: “Her baby was born premature- her EDD was for May 2017 but complications arose that necessitated that she be induced to save the baby’s life as well as hers. But since the delivery in March, her health had not been exactly perfect”.

She further revealed that around 10pm local time (3am Nigerian time) she went into a crisis. ‘Her blood pressure shot up and she got unconscious. An ambulance was called to transport her to the hospital. But her case worsened and she gave up the ghost before she could make it to the hospital. Moji could not say goodbye to us, she didn’t let us hold her baby, where will her mother start from? Her death came too early, I believe this was not ordinary. This looks like a spiritual attack “she said

Her infant daughter is said to be in care of her friend whom she was staying with in Canada. However no one knows what will happen to the baby as Olaiya’s relationship with the father of the child, simply called ‘Mr Femi’ is obscure as there are speculations that he is still married to someone else.

  • Meningitis: Death toll rises to 745 in 8,057 cases – FG

Meningitis: Death toll rises to 745 in 8,057 cases – FG

The Federal Government, on Wednesday, confirmed that 745 persons had died in 8,057 suspected cases of Cerebrospinal Meningitis across the country since the outbreak of the disease.

The government however expressed its commitment to continuing to intensify efforts to stop the deaths and further spread of the disease in the worst-hit states of Zamfara, Sokoto, Katsina, Kebbi and Niger.

A statement by the Technical Assistant, Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, Dr. Lawal Bakare, said to increase awareness of the outbreak and coordinate response across states, the northern traditional rulers committee on primary health care held a meeting with the governors from the North.

The meeting, which was held in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Health and its agencies and international partners, focused on strategies to end the outbreak.

According to Bakare: “As of April 17, 2017 (Monday), 8,057 suspected cases of meningitis had been reported across the country; 230 (3 per cent) were laboratory confirmed.

A total of 745 deaths (9.2 per cent) have been recorded.

Of the 8,057 cases, 7,519 (93 per cent of cases) have occurred in the five states that have reached outbreak levels for CSM serotype C.”

According to him, during the meeting, state governors reaffirmed their commitment to immediate and concrete actions towards halting the outbreak, while traditional rulers also said they were ready to continue to raise awareness in their and jurisdictions.

He said, “At the national level and in the affected states, activities aimed at driving information in the grassroots, including advocacy meetings with religious leaders, civil society organisations, health professionals, entertainers and media organisations, continue.

The National Primary Health Care Development Agency successfully led vaccination in Zamfara and in Katsina states targeting persons between ages two and 29 years in the priority Local Government Aeas in both states.

Preparations are at advanced stages for the next round of vaccination in priority wards and local government areas in Sokoto State.”

The CSM National Emergency Operations Centre at the NCDC, Bakare said, had been leading the national coordination and support for the outbreak response in affected states.

The Director-General, NCDC, Dr. Chikwe Ihekweazu, also emphasised the need to ensure that citizens were continuously engaged on the response.

The NCDC will continue to engage proactively through all our channels of communication online and offline. We will also continue to work with our health reporters and journalists across the country to ensure easy reporting of facts,” he emphasised.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole, said, on Wednesday, that investigations had commenced into the theft of meningitis vaccines in some states.

We are investigating the allegations that vaccines have been disappearing because of theft. We have nothing to substantiate it. We have heard of it; so far, nobody has been able to substantiate it, but we are investigating it.

What we are worried about is for Nigerians not to go and pick vaccines from any shop because they might sell fake vaccines to them; that is my fear. It is available and so, nobody should go and buy fake vaccines,” the minister stated.

TheNewsGuru.com reports that Adewole had at last week Tuesday said the Federal Government needs more than one billion dollars for vaccines to eradicate meningitis epidemic in the five most affected states in the Northern region.

  • Meningitis: LASG refutes reports of deaths

The Lagos State Ministry of Health yesterday refuted media reports alleging that two deaths attributed to meningitis have been recorded in the state.

The Commissioner for Health, Dr Jide Idris, while reviewing the activities of the state government with regards to curtailing and controlling the spread of the meningitis epidemic in press statement dismissed the report as false, capable of causing undue panic among the citizenry

“The report carried by some newspapers and online platforms is untrue and does not represent the reality of the situation in Lagos State as at today”, he said. For the avoidance of doubt, there are two main types of meningitis. The epidemic prone meningitis which is referred to as Cerebro-spinal meningitis (CSM) is caused by a bacteria called Neisseria Meningitidis and its occurrence is seasonal or cyclical depending on the level of herd immunity and climatic conditions. The second type of meningitis is Non Epidemic Meningitis.

This type of neningitis is usually caused by a virus or other bacteria, but not by Neisseria Meningitidis. The Non-epidemic meningitis occurs without any seasonal pattern or periodicity . Idris also disclosed that though the Disease Surveillance Notification Officer, Lagos Island Local Govt reported nine suspected cases of meningitis from Massey Street Children Hospital in Week 13 of this year with two deaths, none of these was confirmed as due to the causative agent of CSM.

He further revealed that though all the nine cases presented with clinical features of meningitis at the said hospital but laboratory tests proved that they were either due to Haemophilus influenza or Streptococcus pneumoniae and not Neisseria meningitidis. Idris, in addition, said that the Ministry of Health was also notified last week of a three year old boy presenting clinically as meningitis at a registered private facility in Lagos but the laboratory investigations did not confirm CSM.

According to him ” the blood culture yielded no growth but the urine culture yielded Klebsiella and not meningococcus. The patient is already is responding to treatment” Idris affirmed that “none of these cases presented with a history of recent travel to any area with an outbreak of meningitis and neither were visits from such areas recorded with the aforementioned cases”.

Idris seized the opportunity to reiterate the Lagos State government’s firm resolve to prevent and control the spread of the epidemic to the state. He then urged the people of the state to support governmental effort by reporting suspected cases to the nearest public health facility or call the following lines 08037170614, 08023169485.

The Commissioner stressed the need for the observance of a high standard of personal and environmental hygiene as a preventive measure against the outbreak of the disease noting that such hygiene measures should include washing of hands with soap and water frequently and thoroughly, avoiding direct contact with the discharges from an infected person and covering of mouth and nose when coughing and sneezing.

“It is strongly advised for people to avoid overcrowding in living quarters, provide cross ventilation in sleeping and work-rooms and other places where many people come together and get vaccinated with CSM vaccine when you are travelling to areas where Meningitis outbreaks have been reported”, he added. Idris noted that health workers in the state have already been placed on red alert on the disease and surveillance teams consisting of epidemiologists are also intensifying their surveillance and monitoring activities.

“Health workers are also advised to avoid close and prolonged contacts with suspected and probable cases of CSM, ensure proper disposal of respiratory and throat secretions of cases, report suspected or probable cases and observe universal precaution and make use of personal protective equipment when in contact with such cases”. “There is no need to panic. We will continue with our surveillance activities, constantly review our records and brief the public from time to time”, he added.

  • Queens College shutdown as diarrhoea kills two students

Queens College shutdown as diarrhoea kills two students

Queens College, Yaba, in Lagos, has been shutdown after two students allegedly died of diarrhoea, between Thursday, February 23 and Friday, February 24, 2017.

Two female boarding students, Vivian Osuinyi and Bithia Itulua reportedly died after vomiting and stooling.

They allegedly ate Spaghetti and drank water served in the Refectory by the college cooks, Daily Sun reports.

The Federal Ministry of Health, which gave this order, said it had commenced investigations into the death of the students.

It was gathered that following the outbreak of diarrhoea in the school, parents, whose wards resumed on Monday, contacted officials of the Parents Teacher Association (PTA), to find out the situation of things.

Only Senior Secondary III students resumed on Monday, to complete their examinations while the junior students were expected in school next week, but, with the outbreak of diarrhoea and the directive by health officials to send the students home, it will affect the resumption of other students.

A senior staff told Daily Sun that health officials have directed that the SS III students will also be sent home to enable Lagos State health officials investigate the source of the diarrhoea as well as carry out environmental exercise in the school.

“As soon the SS III students finish their Mathematics examination, today, they will go home. We have informed parents about their coming home.

“The health officials insisted the students must vacate the college to allow for thorough investigation”, the source said.

The staff, however, added that, “some parents are just blowing the issue out of proportion. The issue started a month ago when some students complained and were treated at the sickbay and two weeks ago, a student vomited and stooled and she died later.

“The new Old Girls Association president called the principal to inform her of another death which we are yet to confirm.’’

  • Lassa fever: Nassarawa confirms death of 8 people

The Nasarawa State Government has said that no fewer than eight people have so far died following the recent outbreak of Lassa fever in the state.

Dr Ibrahim Adamu, the Director of Public Health in the state’s Ministry of Health, made this disclosure to the newsmen on Tuesday in Lafia.

Adamu said: “Of the 11 confirmed cases recorded since the index case in November 2016, eight have died while three others are responding to treatment at the Dalhatu Araf Specialist Hospital (DASH) in Lafia.

“The three survivors in DASH are recovering very fast, two of them will be completing their treatment today – Tuesday to be discharged while the other will complete his treatment by the weekend’’.

Adamu also said that the number of people, who had contact with the patients and were being monitored, had risen to 82 from 66.

“All those identified contacts now under surveillance, have been placed on oral drugs and we monitor their temperature twice daily,’’ he added.

He said the State Government had shown commitment towards fighting the outbreak by providing the Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and drugs for the treatment of the disease.

According to him, the insinuation that health personnel are complaining of not having access to PPE is not true as the State Government has provided adequate PPEs to the hospitals.

He explained that the PPE was meant to be given only to the health personnel giving service to the affected patients.

“There is a lot of anxiety for the disease, which makes everybody in any hospital where there is a confirmed case to want to wear the PPE.

“However, there is also a clear method of the transmission of the disease that people should be aware of and when the need to wear the PPE arises,’’ he said.

Adamu said that in order to allay the fear on the spread of the disease at the hospital, some wards at DASH had been designated as isolation centres for the Lassa fever patients.

He added that the State Government had also approved the creation of a disease isolation centre along Shinge road in Lafia.

Adamu said that fund was appropriated for the project in the 2017 budget and it had been defended by the ministry before the State House of Assembly.
