    “General Diya lived a remarkable life of a soldier” -Tinubu mourns

    The president-elect, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, has sent his condolences to the family of former Chief of General Staff, Lt. General Oladipo Diya, who died Sunday morning.

    He said Diya would be remembered for his patriotism and service to the nation, stressing “General Diya lived a remarkable life of a soldier.”

    General Diya, according to his son, Sinmi Diya, died in the wee hours of Sunday at the age of 79.

    TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports that the former Nigeria’s number citizen served as military governor of Ogun State where he hailed from and held several military positions before he became Chief of General Staff in 1993 as second in command to late Head of State, General Sani Abacha.

    While expressing his sadness over the demise of the retired general, Tinubu praised his contributions to national development and the military institution.

    He said, “The news of the death of General Oladipo Diya early this morning came to me as a shock. I send my heartfelt condolences and sympathy to his immediate family, especially his wives and children.

    “General Diya lived a remarkable life of a soldier and he made his mark in the military where he served our country diligently. As Military Governor of Ogun State, in the various military positions, he held till he rose to the enviable position of Chief of General Staff and second in command to the Head of State, he served meritoriously.

    “As much as he could, he played a stabilising role during one of the most turbulent periods in our nation’s life in the aftermath of the June 12, 1993 presidential election. He will be remembered for his patriotism and service to the nation.

    “My condolences to Governor Dapo Abiodun and the people of Ogun State. I pray that Almighty Allah comforts his family and all those he left behind. May God Almighty grant his soul eternal rest.”

    Chrisland staff, vendor to be charged with involuntary manslaughter for student’s death

    Some staff and a vendor of Chrisland Schools would be charged with involuntary manslaughter following the death of a 12-year-old pupil, Whitney Omodesola Adeniran.

    The pupil died on February 9, 2023, during Chrisland school’s inter-house sports held at Agege Stadium in Lagos State (LASG).

    According to a statement signed by the Director of Public Affairs in the ministry, Mrs Grace Alo, on Friday, “some members of staff and one of the vendors will therefore be charged with the offences contrary to sections 224 and 251 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2015.”

    Alo explained that the case was referred to the Nigerian Police which carried out a thorough investigation with the help of other agencies.

    “The file was subsequently forwarded to the Department of Public Prosecution (DPP) office on March 20 for review of the duplicate case file.

    “On March 23, the DPP issued his legal advice and came to the conclusion that a prima facie case of involuntary manslaughter and reckless and negligent acts had been established against the school.”

    It added that information would be filed in accordance with the legal advice issued by the DPP and certified true copies of the legal advice is available on the ministry of justice website (www.lagosstatemoj.org.)

    TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) had reported that on February 9, the deceased slumped during the inter-house sports organised by the school at the Agege Sports Stadium and was subsequently rushed to Agege Central Hospital, Agege, Lagos, where she was confirmed “brought in dead” (BID) by the doctor on duty.

    Recall that LASG, on March 2, said the post-mortem report issued by the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital showed the cause of the death was asphyxia and electrocution.

    Mabo never recovered from the death of his wife, says Izilein

    A former coach of the Super Falcons, Godwin Izilein, has said that late Ismaila Mabo, who died on Monday at the age of 80, never recovered from his wife’s demise in 2022.

    Izilein who spoke with NAN in Calabar on Tuesday, said Mabo would be missed for his humility, work rate, and his passion for the development of football.

    He said Mabo’s passionate love for football saw him played with the national team at various times and coach the Super Falcons.

    According to him, “Mabo had this undying love for football and has high work rate and was always ready to pass his knowledge to players.

    “He never really recovered from the death of his wife who passed on in 2022.

    “I am indeed saddened with his demise and pray that his efforts at seeing to the growth and development of football in the country never go unfulfilled even in death.”

    Izilein appealed to the state and federal governments to ensure that those who sacrificed their lives and time for the country in the area of sports get their reward while still alive.

    The former Super Falcons coach said he does not see any sense in eulogising a dead athlete or coach when all that could have been done was to reward patriotism while they are still alive.

    “I am a victim of this shenanigan by handlers of sports in the federation. As I speak with you, am still being owed US$ 28,750 as well as N2 million since 2004 Women Cup of Nations in South Africa.

    “I have grown tired talking about it and I just hope they won’t eulogise me when I am gone,” he asked.

    Mabo was credited to have led the Super Falcons to their best-ever outing at the FIFA Women’s World Cup in 1999 where they reached the quarter-finals.

    He also led Nigeria to the 2000 Summer Olympics and 2004 Summer Olympics.

    SAD! Fear in UNICAL as University Don found dead with multiple stabs

    The police command in Cross River has confirmed the recovery of the body of a Professor of Political Science with the University of Calabar (UNICAL), Felix Akpan.

    The command’s spokesperson, Irene Ugbo, who confirmed the incident, said the body was discovered on Sunday with multiple stabs in his apartment at Plot 181, Duke Town Close, State Housing in Calabar.

    Ms Ugbo said an arrest had been made while the matter was still under investigation.

    “We have a suspect in custody who claims to be a friend of the deceased (Prof. Akpan).

    He said he did not know what happened to him or who stabbed him to death.

    “Our crack team of detectives have already swung into action; we will soon get to the root of the matter by unravelling who the killer is,” she assured.

    Meanwhile, a source who pleaded anonymity said the deceased, a former dean of Students Affairs at UNICAL, had a guest on Saturday but left very early on Sunday to Akampka before his body was found.

    “A lady who stays in the compound said that she heard a loud scream the same day the visitor, who has now been confirmed to be a friend, left his apartment and alerted people in the neighbourhood about the noise.

    “Perhaps, he forgot something that made him come back to the victim’s house, where he was apprehended and taken to prof’s apartment, where we saw the lifeless body of Prof. Akpan with multiple stabs,” he said.

    Police speaks on death of Uber driver in Abuja

    The Police Command in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) says no Uber driver was killed by armed robbers in Abuja as being circulated in some sections of the social media.

    The Police Public Relations Officer in the FCT, DSP Josephine Adeh said this in a statement on Tuesday in Abuja.

    Adeh said the clarification was to disabuse the minds of FCT residents who had come across the misleading information.

    She said preliminary investigations by the police on the matter showed that an argument erupted on Monday at about 10:00 pm, between an Uber driver and another whose name was yet to be known.

    The police spokesperson said the argument erupted over a parking space along Gimbiya street in Garki area of Abuja.

    “The argument snowballed into physical violence which resulted in the unidentified man, shooting the Uber driver and taking to his heels.

    “Upon receipt of the information, police operatives from the Garki Police Division drifted to the scene and rescued the injured Uber driver.

    “He was then, rushed to the nearest hospital where he is currently recuperating,” she said.

    Adeh said the Commissioner of Police (CP) in charge of the FCT, Mr. Sadiq Abubakar had directed discrete investigations and an aggressive manhunt to identify and apprehend the fleeing suspect.

    She said the CP had also ordered the deployment of intelligent assets of the command to the area to strengthen its security architecture.

    Adeh enjoined the public to go about their lawful duties without fear or apprehension from any quarters bearing in mind that the police was on top of the situation.

    It would be recalled that the veteran actress confirmed in a previous interview that her husband is battling dementia with Lewy body.

    She disclosed that her husband her been battling the ailment “for a couple of years” and “does not understand what is going on.

    Joke Silva has disclosed that they have sort spiritual and orthodoxy help but all efforts to put him back in good condition have failed. She swiftly added that she has come to accept the new and difficult reality of her husband’s condition.

    In a statement on her Instagram story, Silva said that her husband is alive and doing well.

    PSC wants immediate investigation into shooting, killing of female lawyer

    The Police Service Commission (PSP) has called on police leadership to immediately, commence an investigation into the shooting and killing of a Lagos lawyer, Mrs. Bolanle Raheem by a police officer.

    Mr. Ikechukwu Ani, the Head of Press and Public Relations of PSC made the call in a statement on Tuesday in Abuja.

    Ani described the incident as irresponsible and savage and urged the Force Management to report the outcome of the investigation to the commission for consideration and further disciplinary action.

    He called on the Nigerian police to put in place, a formidable programme for further training of its men in weapon handling.

    The PSC spokesman said cases of unprovoked shooting and killing of innocent Nigerians were becoming worrisome.

    He said the Police, by its creation and constitutional mandate, was expected to protect and save lives and not to shot and kill innocent Nigerians.

    “The acting Chairman of the Commission, Justice Clara Ogunbiyi on behalf of the management and staff commiserates with the family of the deceased,” he said.

    Raheem was allegedly shot and killed by a Policeman attached to Ajiwe Police Station in Ajah, Lagos State on Dec. 25.

    ISIS has acknowledged the death of its leader, Abu al-Hasan al-Hashmi al- Qurayshi announced his successor.

    The terrorist group said on Wednesday that its leader was killed while “struggling with the enemies of God”.

    The group’s media affiliate al-Furqan published an audio message by an ISIS spokesman announcing the death of its leader who was appointed in March, CNN reports.

    ISIS also confirmed Abu al-Hasan al-Hashmi al- Qurayshi’s successor on Wednesday.

    “I announce and mourn for the Islamic state and the fighters of almighty Islamic state, (the absence) of the Amir of believers and the Calipha of the Muslims Abu al-Hasan al-Hashmi al- Qurayshi … he was killed while struggling against the enemies’ of God,” spokesman Abu Omar al-Muhajer said in the message released Wednesday.
    ISIS did not state where its leader was killed and who carried out the killing.

    The group announced his successor, who goes by Abu al-Husain al-Husaini al-Quraishi. Little is known about him, but the group described him as an “old fighter” without mentioning any further details.

    The deceased leader was appointed by ISIS in March 2022 after US President Joe Biden announced the death of Abu Ibrahim al-Hashimi al-Qurayshi in a military operation in the northwest of Syria.

    An audio message posted online had said Abu al-Hassan al-Hashemi al-Qurayshi was now “caliph”, without providing any further details about his identity.

    But US said the Iraqi jihadist blew himself up, killing his family, during a special forces raid on his hideout in north-western Syria on 3 February.

    A statement issued this afternoon by the family and signed by Hector Okposo confirmed his demise and says more information will be released later.

    The statement reads: ‘It is with a heavy heart but with total submission to God that I announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, brother, uncle, Minister of God, Sammie Okposo’.

    ‘Sammie slept and went to be with the Lord on the morning of Friday, November 25, 2022’.

    ‘More details about the burial will be communicated soon’.

    ‘We are consoled because we know that he is with Jesus singing with angels. We kindly request that the family is allowed to grieve peacefully at this time’.
