Errant driver knocks down LASTMA official to death

The General Manager, Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Mr Bolaji Oreagba, has confirmed the death of one of his officials, Jamiu Issa.

The late Issa was knocked down and ran over by a driver who had driven against the flow of traffic in the Lekki area of the state while trying to escape arrest.

Oreagba, who made the disclosure in a statement on Wednesday in Lagos, said that the errant driver drove a green Toyota Sienna vehicle, with registration number FST 901 AR at the time of the unfortunate incident.

According to him, the late Issa accosted the driver who drove against the flow of traffic, facing oncoming vehicles from Chevron area, towards the Conservation Toll Plaza.

“It was reported that Issa, the LASTMA patrol team leader in Ajah … was knocked down and ran over by the traffic law offender, who had pretended to be alighting from the vehicle.

“The driver changed his action and tried to escape by reversing the vehicle, knocking down Issa with the opened door while the front tyre ran over the officer. This action fatally injured Issa in the process.

“Issa’s colleagues at the scene of the event quickly put a call through to the zonal head while some Good Samaritans and eye witnesses pursued the escaping Sienna driver to the Chevron Waterfront area where he was eventually apprehended and taken first to Ilasan Police Station.

“The driver was eventually taken to Ajiwe Police Station under which jurisdiction the event happened for proper investigation.

“According to other eye witnesses’ accounts, the driver also knocked down another person while he was trying to escape from the scene,” Oreagba said.

He said that Issa was rushed to the Lagos Island General Hospital where he was confirmed dead.

The LASTMA General Manager, who was grieving, commiserated with the family of the deceased officer.

He said that in spite of the many appeals and warnings to the public to desist from assaulting and injuring government officials, some unscrupulous elements had refused to yield to such entreaties.

He said such erring people would be made to face the full wrath of the law.

Oreagba also noted that the latest incident would not deter LASTMA officials from carrying out their duties, as enshrined in the law that set up the agency.

He appealed to the public to abide by the laws governing the state to avoid attendant consequences.

Police allegedly arrest Gospel singer Osinachi’s husband

More speculations are beginning to emerge over the death of Gospel Singer, Osinachi Nwachukwu, who died on Saturday as a Facebook user identified as Bar Chidinma has alleged that the late singer’s husband has been arrested by the Police in connection with her death.

Chidinma, also alleged that Osinachi’s husband was beating and maltreating her.

She explained that Osinachi spent five days on life support at the hospital after her husband kicked her in her chest.

The social media has been awash since yesterday when the news of her death broke with numerous, but unverified, claims that the late Gospel Singer was involved in an abusive marriage.

Gospel Singer and Film maker, Gold Martins who shared Chidinma’s post on social media, also alleged that the late singer had told someone she knew that she would have left her marriage if not for what people would say.

Martins, also said the singer confessed that she was been abused and maltreated by her husband.

    Martin’s statement reads,

While praying last night, all I was praying for was for God to touch the heart of people around her. Let them come out and speak. That woman personally told someone I know what she was passing through at the hands of that her husband. According to her “if not for the church and what people will say, I would have left this marriage.”
Even in their presence when that man called her, he was calling her names like “steeped” and “fuuuuul*ish”

If minister Osinachi could tell a total stranger her story, how much more her church? Do you want me to believe that her church and pastor didn’t know what this woman was passing through? Can they come out and swear that they are ignorant of the fact that she was living with her enemy? What did they do to help her?

The church has failed the society religion has failed the society we all start practising humanity? Can we?

  • She died of measles – By Stephen Ojapah

She died of measles – By Stephen Ojapah

“If you give some of your own food to feed those who are hungry and to satisfy the needs of those who are humble, then your light will rise in the dark and your darkness will become as bright as the noonday sun” (Is 58: 10).

We are entering the fourth week of Lent. For us Christians, Lent is anchored around the cardinal works of prayer, fasting and almsgiving. These important elements are necessary for the works of penance that we are engaged in. The important question in Isaiah 58:3-6 echoes to all Christians who fast: “’Why have we fasted,’ they say, ‘and you have not seen? Why have we afflicted our souls, and you take no notice?’ In fact, in the day of your fast you find pleasure, and exploit all your laborers. Indeed, you fast for strife and debate, and you strike with the fist of wickedness…. Is this the fast I have chosen, a day for a man to afflict his soul? Is this not the fast I have chosen, to loosen the bonds of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, to let the oppressed go free, and that you break every yoke? Is it not to share your bread with the hungry, and that you bring to your house the poor who are cast out…?”

For Isaiah, the works of mercy and compassion should be the utmost priority of a Christian in this sacred season. Love and compassion to the most vulnerable are values that no religion should ignore. Jesus’ entire ministry is centered around setting the captives and the poor free (Lk 4:18). Psalm 41:1 captures the blessings reserved for those who give service to the poor: “Blessed is the one who considers the poor; in the day of trouble the Lord delivers him.”

The Prophet Amos, dedicated his entire ministry to the raising of the dignity of the poor. Mother Teresa of Calcutta spent her entire life in service to the poor of India. She always insisted on spending one full hour before the Blessed Sacrament before she began her day. In her words, “The poor are kings and our gateway to heaven; we need to spiritually prepare adequately to serve them.”

As we approach the fourth week of Lent, it is important to evaluate our Penance in this season in the context of prayer, almsgiving and fasting. As I wrote in my earlier article, Let the Priests Lead in the Supplication, we engage this season in two ways: to lighten our souls from the burden of sin and to equip ourselves in the service of humanity. Service to humanity, especially the poor, should make a Christian restless. If among you, one of your brothers should become poor in any of your towns within your land that the Lord your God is giving you, you shall not harden your heart or shut your hand against your poor brother (cf. Dt 15:7).

The structure of this world is meant to always accommodate the poor, for they will always be among us; (cf. Dt 15:11). It is left for us to make them a source of blessing or a people to be despised. As I earlier noted, there will always be the poor among us. However, there is a big difference between poverty and destitution: poverty is the state of one who lacks a usual or socially acceptable amount of money or material possessions. Poverty is said to exist when people lack the means to satisfy their basic needs. In this context, the identification of poor people first requires a determination of what constitute basic needs. Destitution is poverty so extreme that one lacks the means to provide for oneself.

This is exactly the situation in Nigeria right now, especially with the rise in kidnappings for ransom that has left thousands of families impoverished. In a little village in Sabuwar Kasa, Kafur Local government, in Katsina State, Kidnappers demanded for N50,000,000 (Fifty Million Naira) or one twenty thousand US dollars ($120, 000). Yes, you heard me, 50 million naira. These poor villagers sold every asset they have in this life to give to kidnappers. Destitution is what we face as a result of the mass sacking of the villagers and the total destruction of their houses and means of livelihood by Fulani terrorists in Kebbi State.

From the 16th to the 18th of March, 2022, the Commission for Interreligious Dialogue for the Catholic Diocese of Sokoto in collaboration with the Dominican Sisters in Gusau, visited those displaced from their homes by Fulani Terrorists in Kebbi State, through the assistance of the Knights of St Columbus in Sacred Heart Parish Vidalia, Georgia USA. The sight of these displaced people sitting helplessly and their living conditions was so heart wrenching. In one of the camps we visited, in Ribah; there were about 720 children, 320 women, and 208 men no food, no sanitation, no water. The only hope of food those IDPs we met have is the daily rising sun. They narrated to us how the terrorists visited them in January in their village and killed over 30 people, kidnapped 40 persons and set the entire village on fire. Those who made it to safety escaped with nothing.

While we were sharing food to the over 720 children and women, a three-year-old girl died of measles. Her death was very painful to many of us because measles is a sickness that a simple vaccination can cure. In a camp of that nature, there is so much grief already in the heart of everyone; the people have witnessed the deaths of so many of their friends and neighbors, and they are still mourning so many losses, so the death of a three-year-old was nothing to them. There was little or no show of pain in the heart of the mother. That is what destitution can do. For many in Nigeria, pain, loss, ransom for payment, have become very normal. And that is why, the death of the little girl was not an issue even for the parents. The camp was still busy with children playing as they took the little child for burial. As I watched the faces of those IDPs in the camps in Ribah, Zuru land, all I saw was a people humiliated by destitution.

IDP camps are generally not taken care of by the government in Kebbi State. There are thousands who are squatting at the moment with families who can accommodate them. The government is not sending any form of assistance to those in the IDP camps. Diseases like measles will continue to kill children there because many of them don’t even have the means to go to the hospital. In Shimfida community of Jibia Local Government, of Katsina State there are over 9000 persons living in a camp. Those 9000 people do not enjoy any form of state support. We cannot even begin to count the number of people, both adult and children, who have died of diseases like measles and chicken pox.

As we continue to do good in this season of Lent, let us equally remember the Internally Displaced, who have been humiliated by destitution and do something concrete to support them.

Fr Stephen Ojapah is a priest of the Missionary Society of St Paul. He is equally the director for Interreligious Dialogue and Ecumenism for the Catholic Diocese of Sokoto, a member of IDFP. He is also a KAICIID Fellow. (omeizaojapah85@gmail.com)

  • Bad marriage: Women are wailing, men are dying! – By Michael West

Bad marriage: Women are wailing, men are dying! – By Michael West

    By Michael West

A foremost Christian faith father expressed his grave concern about the dangerous trend of increasing rate of divorce in the society, and in particular, among Christian couples which is the consequence of bad marriages. In a tone depicting a deep concern, the popular clergy believes that both sexes are endangered species in marital crisis situation that has been leading to tragic deaths of warring spouses.

“I don’t miss any of your articles on marriage and societal ills. It is appalling to see what the institution of holy matrimony has turned to. By the privileged position some of us occupy in the Body of Christ, I can confirm to you that many men are also suffering, in fact, some are dying in silence. It is women’s ordeals that we get to hear more but many men are languishing in pains and regrets in their matrimonial homes,” he said.

When I reminded him of the miserable condition and danger inherent in making wrong choices as the root cause of bad marriages, he said his concern was how best to intervene and curtail the sad cases of spousal murders which are becoming rampart these days. Like those who have expressed deep pity for spouses stuck in bad marriages, he restrained himself from recommending divorce as a possible solution but he’s of view that separation that would give room for peace during which contending issues can be resolved was preferable.

Religious tenets, cultural and societal values will rather work to preserve homes than allow separation or divorce. The truth is that nobody ever wishes to experience broken home! It is harrowing especially when children are involved. But now that acrimonious marriages have become shorter routes to the grave, something urgent and feasible has to be done.

I have listened to several marriage counsellors and relationship coaches giving analytical prognoses and offer solutions to diverse marital issues. However, where the causes of disputes are fundamental or spiritual, such troubled marriages do not respond to prescribed solutions. But in families where their issues are neither spiritual nor fundamental, then, those academic, professional and experiential approaches to character modification and attitudinal adjustment would work well.

Beyond sexual immorality, factors leading to divorce these days are many. The choice of life partners we make is key. Whoever ends up with a wrong choice should not should not hesitate to quit when their life or health is in jeopardy. That is not to say good and promising marriages won’t have their own fair share of challenges; of course they do but it will be workable, amendable and bearable without regrets or much pains. It is in such a situation that God wants us to learn patience, endurance, increased faith in God, appreciating each other better and understanding love languages, working on self to become better, less snappy but more tolerant as well as interceding in prayers for the home.

Leaders are often evasive in their responses whenever they talk about bad marriage. Save expressing pity and compassion on the victims, they’re cautious in offering suggestions on the way out of bad marriage. Sadly if the unexpected happens, people will blame the dead for staying put in a life threatening marriage whereas if the late had attempted to quit, it is the same set of people that would mount pressure on the person to stay back. They will use all kinds of reasons and sentiments including children, fear of the unknown out there, the religious and societal stigma etc until it becomes too late to help.

Pastor E. A. Adeboye of the Redeemed Christian Church of God in a sermon that went viral on the internet said: “It is better to be single than marry the wrong person. If you marry the wrong person your hell begins on earth. It takes only the supernatural intervention of the Almighty God to rescue you if you marry the wrong fellow.” This is perfect! Absolute truth! It takes only God to RESCUE the victim! My question is how will the rescue operation take place? Certainly it is not safe to remain in the troubled or jinxed marriage and neither separation nor divorce was suggested, I’m sure death is not the rescue that Daddy G. O was referring to here, neither was it the rapture. I will leave the rest to your judgment.

This is one of the reasons I’m advocating for a solemn assembly of God’s Generals in this generation to come together and review the institution of marriage in view of the existing reality in order to stop spousal murders and curtail incessant marital breakups. In the days of the Apostles, knotty issues were tabled for robust debate and consideration in Jerusalem from where solid and acceptable decisions were made for the Church. Such resolutions are still binding on all believers till date. As representatives of Christ, the Church leaders have such mandate under the leading of the Holy Spirit to painstakingly juxtapose the reality of our situation in line with the scriptures to come up with new rules and guidelines regarding holy matrimony for us. Shying away from frontally tackling the problem is cowardly and it’s not helpful at all.

For real, some men are not fortunate with good wives. No matter how hard they try, the little support they need from their wives to achieve something for the family is denied. Some women would rather spend their money on aso ebi, makeup kits and other frivolities than cooperate with their men for the good of the family. Such callous women hardly last in marriage. A number of men had died prematurely due to marital problems but they’re unsung victims because they are not women. Many are still weeping in their closets without anyone to comfort them. In case they choose to speak out, who will listen to or even believe their stories? Single dads are more in pains than single moms. Let’s be kind to each other in marriage please! Men are dying silently but nobody cares!

I do receive calls at least three to four times a week from people complaining about the kind of ugly situation they found themselves in their marriages. Beyond the acts of infidelity and sexual immorality, women complain more about uncaring and gross irresponsible attitudes of their men. Candidly, stingy men are worse than philanderers! I have lost count of cases I could mention here but more homes have broken due to acts of irresponsibility as demonstrated by stingy and selfish behaviours than infidelity. A miser is a killer! He would rather watch his spouse being overwhelmed by financial challenges than part with his money to save her situation. Stingy men and violent husbands are the same. While one kills with punches the other kills with neglect and callousness. Misers are shameless lot who would not mind being fed by their wives even when they have money to give but they withhold it. They ignore and laugh off insults hauled at them provided their money remains in their pockets. Only a limited number of them are moved by the needs of their children. They smartly abdicate their responsibilities by pushing their primary responsibilities to their wives or at best share the bills. I’m not referring to jobless, struggling or needy men who have little to offer, no, I mean men that are able but unwilling. You know what? Such niggards are horse riders in the bedrooms who are always in the mood for their women’s attention. This is one of the reasons they quarrel often. Bad guys!

    ‘We’re all work in progress’

Last week’s edition elicited widespread responses from far and near. I forwarded most of the responses to her. Emails are still dropping as I wrap up this column yesterday. As divergent as the views and opinions canvassed were, they’re all valuable even when some were judgmental. She sent in a word of appreciation to readers who took time to communicate their responses. She also spoke with some persons who had genuine reasons to contact her through me. Her message reads:

“I wish to express immense appreciation to everyone who reacted/responded to my story. I patiently read all the analyses, suggestions and the criticisms. I do appreciate all. I intend to apply the useful pieces of advice to chart a course for the future, with God on my side. We’re all work in progress in the hands of our Creator. I believe in Him for the best in all things. Thanks so much good people and God bless you all. From Mrs. I. Anthony”

Federal poly Ede denies students’ death in viral video

Management of the Federal Polytechnic, Ede, Osun, on Saturday debunked a story which said that two of its students were killed.

The Media and Public Relations Officer of the Polytechnic, Sola Lawal, said this while addressing a press conference at the institution’s premises in Ede.

Lawal said that the two gory pictures of a young man and a lady, purportedly shot dead, are not students of the institution.

He described the story as a mere imagination of the author.

Lawal warned members of the Polytechnic community to desist from any act of misinformation capable of causing avoidable tension in the academic community.

He said the press conference is to allay the fear of parents and guardians and the Polytechnic community at large.

“Since Thursday, the social media has been awash with two gory pictures of a young man and a lady, purportedly shot dead in an unknown place.

“To put the record straight, the said persons in the picture are not bonafide students of the Federal Polytechnic, Ede.

“The report is a figment of imagination of the author, baseless without any iota of truth.

“Members of the Polytechnic community in particular, are hereby warned to desist from peddling unfounded rumour and guard their utterances capable of causing unnecessary tension both within and outside the campus,” he said.

The institution’s spokesman urged the staff and students of the institution to remain calm and avoid unnecessary nocturnal activities while in the town.

Farmer stabs woman to death over derogatory remark

A farmer, Rebecca Nicodemus, 25, married as second wife, has stabbed her senior rival to death for making derogatory remarks about her while making love with their husband.

Rebecca explained that she came to Ondo State in January, 2022 and they were leaving in the same house.

In her words: “I am a farmer and we have been relating together in harmony alongside the deceased.

“On that fateful day, my husband was earlier with me in the living room but had to excuse himself on a pretext that we were not free to continue with our love making.

“I was waiting for my husband when I discovered he was making love to the senior wife inside the bedroom.

“I also heard them making derogatory remarks about me. So, I waited in the sitting room for my rival to come out from the room and when she came out , I challenged her over her unkind words.

“Rather than the deceased to be apologetic, she suddenly grabbed my clothes which made me angry

“So, I took a knife on the table in our sitting room and stabbed her at the back with the knife.

“It was not my intention to kill her, I over reacted in anger”.

Police Prosecutor, Obadasa Ajiboye, informed the court that the defendant stabbed her with a knife at her left back side which resulted to her death.

According to him, the offence was contrary to and punishable under Sections 316 and 319 of the Criminal Code, Cap. 37, Vol. 1, Laws of Ondo State of Nigeria, 2006.

However, plea of the defendant was not taken but the prosecution made an oral application to remand the defendant in prison custody pending the outcome of advice from Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

In his ruling, Magistrate Damilola Sekoni, ordered that Rebecca be remanded in police custody and adjourned the case to February 22, 2022 for ruling on the remand application.

  • Inquest: What we found at scene of Dapo Ojora’s death – Police

Inquest: What we found at scene of Dapo Ojora’s death – Police

A police officer, Insp Damian Oguinye, on Thursday revealed his alleged findings at the death scene of a socialite and businessman, Mr Adedapo Ojora, at his Ikoyi, Lagos, residence on Dec. 11, 2020.

Oguinye testified before an Ikeja Coroner’s Court.

Adedapo was the son of businessman, Chief Adekunle Ojora, and brother-in-law of former Senate President Bukola Saraki.

His sister is Mrs Oluwatoyin Saraki.

Adedapo allegedly passed away in controversial circumstances in his home, from a gunshot injury on the head.

Oguinye testified that Ikoyi Police Station received a distress call from one Mr Adeyinka Ojora in the evening of Dec. 11, 2020, to the effect that a 59-year-old man was found lifeless in a pool of blood.

He said that the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of the Ikoyi Police Station, CSP Mustapha Tijani, went to the scene with a team of police officers.

“A Beretta Pistol was found laying on the upper chest of the deceased, and when a search was made, an empty shell was discovered in an indoor waste basket,” he testified.

The witness added that the pistol had 13 rounds of live ammunition still loaded in it.

“While the team saw only one shell in the waste basket, it later came and saw two other empty shells in the premises.

“The deceased was lying down facing upwards.

“The bullet had hit the wall,” he said.

Earlier, Oguinye said that the crime scene was preserved by the police and that Ojora family doctor, who was at the scene before the police, had already pronounced the deceased dead.

He said that the DPO checked around the house to see if there was any break-in, but discovered that there was no apparent break-in.

Oguinye said that Tijani had also cordoned off the scene to await the arrival of the deputy commissioner of police in charge of State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti, and the Lagos State commissioner of police.

He said the shirt the deceased was wearing was torn by the DPO to check his torso for bruises but nothing was found.

“A team of forensic experts from SCID Panti, came. CSP Razak Useni led the team.

“The domestic staff, Nkiru Joseph, was called upon by CSP Razak, she was the one who told us where the other guns were kept and we found where they were kept.

“Joseph told us that she had just served the deceased food that evening around 6 p.m.,” he said.

The police officer said that evening, an ambulance came to the premises to take the corpse to a mortuary, and statements of witnesses were taken at the premises.

During Oguinye’s testimony, copies of photographs of the crime scene were tendered as evidence.

The Coroner, Mr Oyetade Komolafe, adjourned proceedings until Feb. 18 for continuation of hearing.
