Short road to peace and freedom – By Cornelius Omonokhua

    By Cornelius Afebu Omonokhua

Since the unfortunate tragedy of May 12, 2022 in Sokoto, I have received messages and calls to question the relevance of inter-religious dialogue in Nigeria. Fortunately, many Muslim scholars have reacted that the action of the killers in Sokoto is not the true teaching of the Holy Quran and therefore does not represent Islam. It is, therefore, easy to conclude that it is a case between government and the suspects who committed the crime of murder. Many people have asked: “How did we get to this level where human life means nothing”? Others have asked: “Where do we go from here”? For others, “How and when did we lose our humanity”? Perhaps, there is hope in our nation. Perhaps, we can fight ignorance with education to reconstruct the road to a new world. Education is a worthy instrument to conquer ignorance. “If you think that education is expensive, try ignorance! Education is imperative in every stage of life. To defeat ignorance is to travel a short road to peaceful co-existence. Freedom of conscience and self-determination call for enlightenment. Education must start from the cradle and end in the grave. To stop learning is to stop living. If education starts from the cradle, then what do parents teach their children from infancy? Good parenting is a short road to peace and freedom.

In African context, the child belongs to the community while in the global context, the child belongs to the society. Those who are responsible for child formation must not and must never indoctrinate the child to a point of teaching the child to kill as we recently witnessed in the videos where a religious teacher was telling the youths to kill extra-judicially. The teacher was teaching the youths to take laws into their hands. Children learn first from the parents and the surrounding environment. They acquire language through active demonstration and repetition of sounds. The brain of the child gets adjusted to the sounds in the first six years with the cognitive capacity. A child easily learns the language of his environment with the attendant culture and tradition. If a child grows with wild animals in the jungle, the child could behave like a savage being. The environment matters a lot in education.

Education inspires the child to aspire for greatness through self-actualization. We need role models in every society. The orientation of children who live in different societies, conditions, situations and environments from birth need teachers who can help the youth to focus on realistic goals and true values. To avoid the tragedy of street children, education is offered free in many countries. This was the case, once upon a time in Nigeria. Every child had the right and opportunity to education which the government could give freely for the sanity and security of the nation. Some of our political leaders today were beneficiaries of that olive branch. What must be acquired through sound education is the TRUTH. According to Winston Churchill, the truth is incontrovertible; malice may attack it, ignorance may deride it, but in the end, only truth can make us truly human. Otherwise, we create a world of anarchy with jungle justice.

To produce a healthy society, hope for the future must be assured through a functional system of education. It is those who do not have access to credible human formation that resort to the use of force and power instead of creative relationships. Education enables the mammal in the human person to be controlled and conquered. The fruits of ignorance are crisis, intra-personal conflict, inter-personal conflict, intra-community conflict, inter-community conflict, intra-religious conflict and inter-religious conflicts. No religion forbids education and formation. In the Holy Bible, the Sages counsel: “Train up a child in the way he should go, even when he is old he will not depart from it (Proverbs 22:6). The bible expressed clearly the role of fathers in parenting (Ephesians 3:12-13; cf. Proverbs 23:13).

Every family is happy to see the children grow gracefully and to grow in strength and wisdom. Saint John expressed this sentiment in his third letter (3 John 1:4). Because Islam values child development, the Holy Quran says, “Kill not your children because of poverty” (Quran 6:151). Islam forbids the institution of street children. A man is like a shepherd of his own family and he is responsible for them (Bukhari and Muslim). The first message to the Holy Prophet Muhammad (SAW) is Iqra (read) (Al-Alaq 96:1-5)! God teaches the human person what he does not know through human agents. The human agents are not to turn the children into slaves or beggars on the streets. The parents should pay for the education of the children and every parent should give birth to the number of children they can adequately cater for.

The Religious teachers assist the child to grow in vertical relationship with God and horizontal relationship with fellow human beings. If the youths are well trained and formed, they will be conscious of human rights. They will resist those who employ them to fight unjustly and conflict profiteers who finance violence. They will know that peace is a virtue that is deeply entrenched in Christianity and Islam. A well-educated person with a reasonable job would promote nation building because he has something to look up to. An enlightened person in religion and society is aware that it is God who fights for human beings and not the other way round. It is God who protects human beings hence the Holy Prophet of Islam did not order his followers to kill in his name. He taught his followers the value of patience in the face of insults (Surah Al-Muzzamil 73:10; Cf. Surah Qaf, 50:39; Surah Ta Ha 20:130; Surah Ali Imran 3:186). While dying on the cross, “Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing (Luke 23,34). Ignorance is akin to a dangerous and chronic cancer.

The Students who killed Deborah must have studied religion under ignorant teachers who indoctrinated them with erroneous and subjective interpretations of the sacred texts. They must have forgotten the teaching of the Holy Prophet that, “If anyone kills a person, it would be as if he killed the whole people: and if anyone saved a life, it would be as if he saved the life of the whole people” (Qur’an 5:32-33). This calls for religious re-education, de-radicalization and re-orientation to pave a short road to peaceful coexistence and a healthy society. This calls on every nation to provide educational system that is functional enough to provide the ideal person with admirable content of character. If you train the child well, you develop the nation.

The essence of education is success and happiness. A young man asked Socrates, an ancient Greek philosopher, the secret of Success. Socrates told the young man to meet him near the river the next morning. They met; Socrates asked the young man to walk with him toward the river. When the water got up to their necks, Socrates took the young man by surprise and ducked him into the water. The man struggled to get out but Socrates was strong and kept him under water until he started turning blue. The young man struggled hard and finally managed to get up. The first thing he did was to gasp and take a deep breath. Socrates asked, “What did you want the most when you were under the water?” The man replied “Air”. Socrates said: “That’s the most secret to success. When you want success as badly as you want air, you will get it. There is no other secret”. The short road to peace and freedom is the desire to learn and acquire the truth that can create space for freedom where justice will be valued. The easy and short road to peace and freedom is the desire to do the right thing to create a civilized society.

Just In: Court remands two suspects in prison over Deborah’s death

A Magistrate Court sitting in Sokoto has remanded two suspects arrested over the murder of a 200-level student of Shehu Shagari College of Education, Deborah Samuel, for alleged blasphemy.

The Police arraigned the two suspects, Bilyaminu Aliyu and Aminu Hukunchi, who are also students of the college, on Monday.

The Police First Information Report said both suspects were arraigned as a result of the mob action, which led to Deborah’s lynching.

Both suspects pleaded not guilty to the charges levelled against them following their arraignment.

Against this backdrop, the prosecutor, Inspector Khalil Musa, prayed the court for another date to enable the Police to complete its investigation.

However, the defence counsels, led by Professor Mansur Ibrahim, who did not oppose the application, pleaded with the court to grant the defendants bail.

Ibrahim cited sections 157, 161(a,f) and 164 of the administration of criminal justice law of Sokoto state, as well as 36(5) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended.

The court, however, adjourned ruling on the application to a later date which would be communicated to the lawyers.

It, therefore, directed the defendants to be remanded at the Sokoto Correctional Centre.

Police arraign two suspects over lynching of Deborah Samuel

Bilyaminu Aliyu and Aminu Hukunci, two suspects, were arraigned on Monday in connection with the lynching of a 200-Level Home Economics student at Shehu Shagari College of Education in Sokoto on May 12.

Deborah was lynched by a mob for alleged blasphemy. She was stoned to death and burnt.

The suspects, who were co-students of the deceased, were arrested and charged in a Sokoto Chief Magistrate’s Court for alleged involvement in the crime.

They entered not guilty pleas to the charges.

The prosecuting inspector was Khalil Musa.

Prof. Mansur Ibrahim, who led a team of 34 lawyers for the defendants, filed for their bail on liberal terms, citing constitutional requirements and portions of the Administration of Criminal Justice Law.

The accused were detained in a detention facility after the trial judge (name withheld for security reasons) reserved his decision on the bail application.

Deborah was accused of defaming Islam on a WhatsApp conversation platform set up by her classmates before being killed, and she refused to remove her post when requested to do so.

Following the arrest of those tied to Deborah’s lynching, a violent street protest ensued, with protestors demanding that security forces release them immediately.

On Saturday, Gov. Aminu Tambuwal ordered a 24-hour curfew on the Sokoto metropolis.

However, he lifted the round-the-clock curfew on Monday, and put in place a dusk till dawn restriction.

BREAKING: Omega Power Ministry offers to train late Deborah’s siblings, relocate entire family

Founder and General Overseer of Omega Power Ministry (OPM), Apostle Chinyere Gift Chibuzor has offered to train the siblings of late Deborah Samuel and relocate the entire family to Port Harcourt, promising them free rent forever.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Apostle Chibuzor made this known on Monday with the Man of God also promising to grant Mr Samuel, father of Deborah a payable job, and also open a shop for Deborah’s mum.

Recall that the father of Deborah, a 200-level student of the Shehu Shagari College of Education, Sokoto, who was burnt to death for alleged blasphemy, had narrated what her death would cost the family.

Deborah’s father said he put everything into her schooling and could not afford to finance the education of her six siblings.

Apostle Chibuzor, seemingly touched by the family’s ordeal, has vowed to take up the upkeep of the family.

“I just watched a video clip where the parents of Deborah Samuel said they will not be sending there children to school again. GOD FORBID.

“Anyone with there contacts should inform them immediately that I Apostle chibuzor Chinyere the General Overseer of OPM Church is relocating them to port harcourt.

“They would be staying in one of the OPM free estates where they will never pay rent forever. All their children are given automatic scholarships in OPM Free schools.

“I will get the father a job and I will also open a shop for the mother. Please get in touch with them immediately,” Chibuzor stated on his official Facebook page.

    Gov. Tambuwal relaxes Sokoto curfew

Gov. Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State on Monday relaxed the 24-hour curfew imposed on Sokoto metropolis on Saturday.

The curfew will now be from dusk to dawn.

The governor imposed the curfew to contain the tension that followed the murder of a 200-Level Home Economics student of Shehu Shagari College of Education in Sokoto over alleged blasphemy.

The lifting of the curfew is contained in a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information, Alhaji Isa Bajini-Galadanchi.

He stated that the relaxation of the curfew followed briefing by security agencies in the state.

“The review is to enable people to go about their legitimate businesses and other means of livelihood,’’ he added.

The commissioner quoted Gov. Tambuwal as advising residents to maintain peace and warned that government would not condone any breach of the law.

  • The killing of Citizen Deborah, our own Malala – By Hope Eghagha

The killing of Citizen Deborah, our own Malala – By Hope Eghagha

Last week the video of a body set ablaze by a mob went viral on social media. It was preceded by the still picture of a lady dressed in red lying on the ground in a grotesque manner. Life was no longer in her. She had succumbed to savagery and jungle justice by overzealous morons who accused her, found her guilty and executed in a most barbarous manner reminiscent of the Stone Age. She died a most horrendous death in the hands of her class or school mates. She was stoned to death by students at a College of Education. The barbarous act was carried out by some teachers of tomorrow. What kind of educators would these teachers be in future? Do they recognize Nigeria? Do they realise that Nigeria is not an Islamic Republic, that is, supposing an Islamic Republic will tolerate such a murder? How are the killers better than bandits or terrorists currently plaguing the northern part of Nigeria? We have allowed a monster out of religion, fighting wars for God who obviously did not ask us to fight for Him!

It turned out that it was the body of Citizen Deborah Yakubu, a student at Shehu Shagari College of Education Wamako Sokoto, who had been murdered because, according to her traducers, she blasphemed the name of Prophet Mohammed. In a class WhatsApp platform, she had complained that the platform had been inundated with religious posts and that the platform should be used for what it was created for. Her traducers claimed she made some uncomplimentary remarks about Prophet Mohammed. Later a sweaty nincompoop, with the dark looks of a savage, released a video in which he claimed gleefully that he was the one that killed the lady in question. This in 21st century Nigeria? This is unacceptable. It is indicative of the deep division between world view of extremists in the north and the rest of the country.

The ugly news has not been carried by cable network stations. If it happened in Afghanistan or the Middle East, her death would be on the airwaves. Fortunately, and appropriately, the Sultan of Sokoto, leader of Muslims in the country, has spoken against the murder. But he should not stop there. We expect him to personally get involved and ensure that the killer is paraded before the press as a common criminal. Except he does this, we would see the condemnation as mere lip service. The irrepressible Father Matthew Kukah has also condemned the murder and called on the government to fish out the perpetrators for the right punishment, stating that ‘’the only obligation that is owed her immediate family, her fellow students and the school authorities is the assurance that those who are guilty of this inhuman act, no matter the provocation, are punished according to the laws of the land’. Writer Gimba Kakanda wrote on a Facebook post: the barbarism that transpired in Sokoto today has no basis in Islam, and it indicts us all. This culture prevails because past self-appointed punishers of blasphemers got away with their crimes. Whether in Islamic jurisprudence or our secular law, there’s no place for jungle justice, no matter how any offended mob feels’.

But the misguided zealots don’t feel any remorse. Some posts which followed the gleeful announcement on social media are instructive. The killer whose photograph is prominently displayed on social media boasted: ‘I killed her. I burnt her. You can see the matchbox I used in setting her ablaze’. One Muhammed Mode Gagi wrote, just as Bilyaminu Ladan, Sirajo Isiya and Balkisu Umar Ibrahim that: ‘You have done well, may God increase the status of Prophet Muhammed (s.a.w). Sufiyenu Yabo then concluded it: ‘Praise be to God. May Allah reward you with paradise! Which God? My question is if the head of Muslims has called it murder, from which book did the young Muslim boys and girls learn that to inflict jungle justice on a woman who supposedly blasphemed is carrying out a divine injunction?

I must state from the outset that no one has the right to insult another religion, either directly or indirectly. Christianity and Islam are the two major religions in Nigeria. Adherents must their boundaries. To insult Prophet Mohammed is unacceptable. But it also unacceptable for an individual to take the life of another citizen in the name of religion. This is how religious wars start. Pause for a minute and imagine what it would be if Christians in Sokoto decide to take the life of a Muslim youth in vengeance. Or if in the Christian-dominated south a Christian family carries out a reprisal attack. An endless cycle will start, the end of which no one can predict. Therefore, the Sokoto State government must rise to the occasion and bring the culprit to book.

There had been other killings in the name of religion in the past. In 1995, one Gideon Akaluka was decapacitated by Muslim fanatics for blasphemy. Nothing came of it in the form of punishment on her killers. In June 2016 Mrs. Bridget Agbaheme was brutally murdered by suspected Islamic extremists in Kofar Wambai market Kano state, over allegations that she blasphemed the name of the Holy Prophet. Except the government takes a decisive action against such criminals, more of such acts will occur in future.

The killing is most incendiary. It is provocative. It could trigger off sectarian war. As we know, religious wars are difficult to contain. Christian Association of Nigeria should get actively involved to ensure that Deborah does not die in vain. Justice must be pursued to serve as a deterrent. The NBA and allied associations must rise to the occasion. Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa (SAN) as urged NBA-SPIDEL not to hold any conference in the State where a Nigerian citizen has been brutally murdered and burnt to death…we should make a statement to the government by cancelling the Conference and hold it in a neighbouring State in the North’.

What has given Pakistani activist Malala Yousafzai an international stature? It is the attack on her person by religious extremists because of her stance on education. Deborah is our own Malala, and she should be accorded that status. Her death in the hands of ignorant and defiant zealots diminishes all of us. I expect the President, the State governor and high-ranking state officials from the North to condemn the killing and order the arrest of the killer. The College management should suspend the suspect pending full investigation. There will be no love lost between the killer squad leader and other Christian members of the class and indeed all other Christian students in the College. Some acts, small as they are, help to define a nation. Except the government punishes the killer, the government would inadvertently be promoting the emerging narrative that there is no ‘One Nigeria!

POSTSCRIPT: After submitting the essay, further developments made me return to my submissions. The culprits were appropriately arrested, leading to mass protests. There have been riots in Sokoto, with houses and properties belonging to non-Muslims being targeted. Alhaji Atiku has withdrawn his condemnation of the killing of Citizen Deborah. He has lost votes, thereby. The State government has imposed a 24hour curfew. But soldiers ought to be drafted to quell the riots that have led to destruction of lives and property. This is no way to grow a federal republic! Government must stand firm! Mr. President must condemn the arsonists.

  • Deborah: The rule of law must triumph – By Sonnie Ekwowusi

Deborah: The rule of law must triumph – By Sonnie Ekwowusi

The rule of law must be allowed to triumph in the matter of the barbaric murder of Deborah Samuel no matter whose ox is gored. Therefore the Sokoto State police, State security agents and the authorities must not succumb to the cheap blackmail and intimidation of some Islamic fanatics and extremists who are now sponsoring orgy of arson and circles of violence in demand for the release of the suspected killers of Deborah. Deborah was a 200-level female Christian student of Shehu Shagari College of Education (SSCOE), Sokoto State. Last week she was astonishingly stoned to death and set ablaze in the most barbaric, horrifying and animalistic manner by some fanatical Muslim students of the same SSCOE for allegedly insulting Prophet Mohammed (Peace be on him). Instead of listening to the voice of the Sultan of Sokoto Alhaji Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar 111 and other voices of reason who have been condemning the murder and calling for justice for Deborah, the Sokoto State Chief Imam Dr. Sheikh Mansour and some Islamic fanatics and extremists are putting pressure on the police and the authorities to release the suspected killers of Deborah. The police and the security agents should not only ignore them but should move quickly to arrest them and charge them to court for sabotaging and obstructing the course of criminal justice.

On its part, the Sokoto State Ministry of Justice must ensure that all the suspected killers of Deborah are swiftly charged to court for murder and executed upon conviction as stipulated in the law. I repeat: Deborah’s murderers should be rounded up, charged to court for murder and executed upon conviction. And if it is established that Professor Ibrahim Magari, the Chief Imam of the National Mosque, Abuja and others had in any way aided and abetted the murder of Deborah they too should be arrested, charged to court for murder and killed if found guilty of murder. Nobody is above the law of the land.

The Sokoto State Chief Imam Dr. Sheikh Mansour and Professor Magari argue that jungle justice meted out against Deborah was aimed at defending Prophet Mohammed (peace be on him) and Islam. Hear Professor Magari “It should be known to everyone that we the Muslims have some redlines beyond which must not be crossed. The dignity of the Prophet (PBUH) is at the forefront of the redlines. If our grievances are not properly addressed, then we should not be criticized for addressing them ourselves.” Contrary to the assertions of Dr. Sheikh Mansour and Professor Magari, jungle justice is unacceptable in Islam. In any case, Deborah did not cross any Islamic redline warranting her murder. She neither insulted Prophet Mohammed (peace be on him) nor blasphemed against Islam before she was stoned to death. Like the conscience of the nation Leah Sharibu, Deborah, merely publicly exercised her right to religious freedom before she was murdered. What was her “offence”? She ascribed her success in an examination which she sat for to Jesus Christ. And when violently ordered by the fanatical Muslim students around her to retract the name Jesus Christ, she refused to do so. That was all before they stoned her to death and set her body ablaze. She never insulted Prophet Mohammed (peace be upon him). She did not desecrate the Holy Qur’an either. She merely exercised her right to religious freedom as enshrined in our 1999 Constitution. By virtue of section 10 of the 1999 Nigerian Constitution, Nigeria is a secular State. Islam is not a State religion either in Sokoto State or anywhere in Nigeria. The import of this is that Deborah, like Leah Sharibu, was free to publicly reject Islam and embrace Christianity. She did so without insulting Prophet Mohammed (peace be on him). She merely publicly professed her Christian faith before they brutally murdered her.

You see, you cannot force anyone to subscribe to your religion. God has created all of us and given us human freedom and expects us to freely exercise our freedom in one way or another. It is disappointing that clerics whose calling is to shepherd their flock to conduct themselves in edifying manner are busy inciting them to take to violence-to maiming, killing and destruction of property of the so-called infidels. By their fruits we shall know them. Violence has never been used to ultimately solve any human problem. So, why unleash violence against others for refusing to profess your religion?. Although Muslims are enjoined to proselytize non-believers to embrace Islam and spread Islamic teachings, they are not enjoined to do so by force or through terrorism or through abduction or killing of human beings or arson. It is the obligation and duty of the Muslim community to enjoin its members to shun wickedness and evil (Holy Quran 3:110).

Dr. Sheikh Mansour and Professor Magari cannot claim to know the Holy Qur’an more than the Sultan of Sokoto Alhaji Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar 111 who has since condemned the murder of Deborah. It is fanatics like Dr. Mansour and Professor Magari who bring bad name to Islam. Islam is a religion of peace. Islam abhors jungle justice. I am surrounded by many fervent Muslim friends and I have never heard any of them threatening to kill any Christian for any reason. Like in Christianity, human life is inviolable in Islam. Human life cannot be taken away in Islam except for a just cause. What is this just cause? Three of these causes are embodied in the Qur’an while the two additional causes have been stated by the Prophet Mohammed (peace be on him). The causes stipulated in the Qur’an are: First, when a person is convicted of deliberate homicide and thus the claim of retaliation is established against him. Second: when someone resists the establishment of the true faith so that fighting against him might become necessary. Third: when someone is guilty of spreading disorder in the domain of Islam and strives to overthrow the Islamic order of government. The two causes stipulated by Prophet Mohammed (peace be on him) are: First: when a person commits illegitimate sexual intercourse even after marriage. Second: when a Muslim is guilty of apostasy and rebellion against the Muslim body-politic. Except for aforesaid five reasons, murdering a human being is not permissible in Islam, regardless of whether the victim is a believer, a protected non-Muslim (dhimmi) or an ordinary unbeliever. (Read Surah Al-Anam Ayat 151(6;151-154)

Despite the foregoing Islamic teaching, some Nigerian murderers under the pretext of defending Allah, seem to have perfected the crime of killing their fellow brothers and sisters in Nigeria. For years, they have been getting away with such killings. For example, in 1995, Gideon Akaluka, a Christian, was beheaded in Kano prison for no reason other than the fact that he was a Christian. Till date, the killers of Akaluka have not been brought to justice. In 1999 major Islamic violent riots erupted in Bauchi, Kaduna, Kano, Minna and Jos claiming human lives. In the year 2000, we witnessed the Sharia riots. Other violent riots seized Jos in 2001 and 2004. From 2005 to 2011, major religious and ethnic riots and killings had engulfed some major cities in the North. On December 18 1980 the “Maitatsine guerrilla war” engulfed the North claiming officially about the lives of 2,800 people even though the army was invited to stop the war. In 1982 or so, the Maitatsine “war” was again ignited in Bulunkutu, Borno State, Jimeta and Gongola, leaving in its aftermath the death of about 900 people. In 1984 some Muslim students of Bayero University started a religious riot which spread to Bauchi and Kano claiming uncountable heavy human lives. In 1985 a violet religious riot erupted simultaneously in about seven Northern States. While the Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC) debate raged in the country in 1986, a religious violence was averted in the North. By 6th or 7th of March 7 1987, the Kafanchan religious conflagration swallowed up Kaduna, Zaria and Kano. About 50 churches were set ablaze. The 90s were not safe either. Following the Crusade organized in Kano in 1991 by a German evangelist Reinhard Bonke, another round of religious riots overtook Katsina, Kafanchan, Zaria, Funtua, Kankum, Tafawa Balewa, Bauchi and other Northern cities claiming many human lives and leaving many people injured.

On June 2 2016, a 70-year old citizen of Imo State called lady Mrs. Bridget Agbahime, and a member of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) was murdered in Kano for alleged blasphemy of the Koran. And barely 10 days later, Francis Emmanuel, a 41-year old Christian, was almost stabbed to death in Kaduna for allegedly eating meat during the Ramadan. As if that was not enough, on the 9th of July 2016, Mrs. Eunic Olawale, a mother of seven who was also the wife of a Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) pastor was murdered in cold blood in Abuja by Muslim fanatics while she was preaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Between 2016 and 2020 thousands upon thousands of Southern Kaduna Christians have been killed in several renewed genocidal attacks carried out against the Southern Kaduna Christians. Between 2016 and 2022 thousands upon thousands of Southern Kaduna Christians have been killed in several renewed genocidal attacks carried out against the Southern Kaduna Christians. In fact, over 15,500 Christians have reportedly been murdered in Nigeria since June 2015. On August 25 2016, eight students of Talat Mafara Polytechnic, Zamfara State were killed set ablaze by fanatical Muslim students of the institution following a fight between two students of the institution. One of the two students alleged that the other student had committed blasphemy against Prophet Mohammed (peace be on him) and that eventually led to the killing and setting ablaze of the eight persons.

On January 8 2020 Rev. Timothy Lawan Andimi, the then Chairman of Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in the Michika area, and, an ordained Christian minister at Ekklesiyar Yan’uwa a Nigeria (EYN), the Church of the Brethren in Nigeria., was shamefully beheaded. On or around the same time On around the same time, Michael Nnadi, a Seminarian of the Good Shepherd, Seminary, and Kaduna was abducted from the Seminary and was brutally murdered. An eye-witness in the Seminary and a friend of Michael recounted that on Wednesday January 8 2020 at 10.27 p.m., he went to the room of Michael and suddenly there were gun shots all over the Seminary which were followed intermittently by the following command in Hausa language: “Ja su waje, Alsaabiun…Kafirai, Ja su wa je! Alsaabiun…Kafirai !! (Drag them out…infidels!, Drag them out…infidels!!). Thereafter two heavily-armed men in military uniform entered the room where he and Michael were lying flat on the floor in great trepidation and seized their respective laptops and other personal belongings. Thereafter, the two men whisked them away to a waiting vehicle where Michael was later killed.

You can now see why it is imperative that the suspected killers of Deborah should be charged to court and be executed if found guilty. Apart from satisfying the demand of our criminal justice system, such punishment would serve as a deterrent to would-be killers of their fellow men and women. Reacting to the murder of Deborah, the Muslim Media Practitioners of Nigeria (MMPN) has stated that it is a criminal offence in Islam for any Muslim or group of Muslims to kill anybody through jungle justice. I completely agree with them. The universal fundamental right for humanity which Islam upholds and which must be observed and respected in all circumstances and at all times is the sacredness of human life. “Do not take a ˹human˺ life—made sacred by Allah—except with ˹legal˺ right. This is what He has commanded you, so perhaps you will understand” (Holy Quran; 17:33). In Islam, human blood is sacred and cannot be spilled anyhow. The first and foremost basic right in the Holy Quran is the right to life. “Whoever kills a human being without justification like manslaughter or corruption on earth, it is though he had killed all mankind” (Holy Quran; 5:32). “Do not kill a soul which Allah has made scared except through the due process of law” (Holy Quran; 6:151). Islam forbids slavery and adduction. In the words of the Prophet (blessings of Allah and peace be upon him), “There are three categories of people against whom I shall myself be a plaintiff on the Day of Judgment. Of these three, one is he who enslaves a free man, then sells him and eats this money”. The life, property and honour of non-Muslims (dhimmis) are to be respected and protected in exactly the same manner as those of Muslims. According to the Prophet (blessings of Allah and peace be upon him) Muslims who kill non-Muslims (dhimmis) will not even smell the fragrance of paradise. The Holy Quran stipulates that, “there should be no coercion in the matter of Faith” (Holy Quran 2:256).

Islam recognizes that all human beings are brothers and sisters. That they are descendant from one father and mother and therefore should not be killed. According to Holy Quran 5:3, “Do not let your hatred of a people incite you to aggression”. Islam teaches that no harm should be done to the civilian population during a war or conflict. The instruction of the Prophet (blessings of Allah and peace be upon him) on this is this, “Do not kill any old person, any child or any woman”, “Do not kill the monks in monasteries” and “Do not kill the people who are sitting in places of worship”. Once upon a time during a certain war, the Prophet (blessings of Allah and peace be upon him) saw a corpse of a woman lying on the ground and he said, “She is not fighting. How then came she to be killed?”.

All said, it is crystal clear that human life is sacred in Islam. It is clear that wanton killing of non-Muslims by fanatical Muslims is against the teaching of the Prophet and Allah. And he who fights against Allah will incur the wrath of Allah the Almighty. We must understand that the spilling of the blood of our fellow men and women diminishes our own existence. The use of force in place of the rule of law is a recipe for anarchy. Any religion ungoverned by the rule of law is dangerous to human society . Under the rule of law the judiciary occupies a unique place in safeguarding the rights of the citizenry. Such rights and regard for the rule of law are the bedrock upon which the society lays its claim to civilization.

Deborah: Northern Govs appeal for calm, condemn gruesome murder of student

As Condemnations continue to trail gruesome murder of Deborah Yakubu, a student of the Shehu Shagari College of Education Sokoto on the trumped up allegation of blasphemy, the 19 northern governors have also added their voices.

The governors who spoke under the aegis of Northern Governors Forum (NGF), commiserated with the bereaved family.

A statement by Dr. Makut Macham, spokesman to the Chairman of the Forum, Simon Lalong, who is also the governor of Plateau State, expressed the concern of his colleagues over the development which they said was clearly an extra-judicial measure of addressing perceived infractions.

“The Northern governors appeal for calm following reports of the hijack of a peaceful protest which later turned violent and led to the imposition of a curfew in Sokoto metropolis,” the statement said.

The governors frowned at the adoption of self-help in addressing grievances whether religious or otherwise which he observed could only lead to further chaos that could threaten law and order as well as the general peace and security of the society.

The NGF while commiserating with the family of the victim urged security agencies to thoroughly investigate the matter and ensure that the law takes its full course on anyone found wanting or culpable in the circumstance.

The Forum also extended its support and commiserations to Governor Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State, especially for the proactive efforts to restore normalcy following reports of the hijack of a peaceful protest which later turned violent and led to the imposition of a curfew in the Sokoto metropolis.

Citizens of the region and Nigerians were also called upon to show love, tolerance, and respect for one another irrespective of faith, ethnicity, or other affiliations.

Deborah, a second-year student of the Shehu Shagari College of Education in Sokoto State, was killed on Thursday following an allegation that she had blasphemed Prophet Mohammed.

The victim was stoned to death and her body burnt by a mob of Muslim students of the college, who are apparently fundamentalists.

Her death has sparked outrage from various individuals and groups across the country, including the Christian community who demanded that her killers be brought to justice.

Azman Air rejects Dangote’s son-in-law for allegedly supporting killers of Deborah

Azman Air has rejected Jamil Abubakar, a former pilot in its crew and son-in-law of Dangote for allegedly supporting killers Deborah Yakubu.

The airline in a public notice disowned him stating that :
“Capt Jamil Abubakar is no longer a pilot @AzmanAir; his last flight with us was 22nd Dec 2019,” Azman Air said in a rebuttal tweet.

Azman airline has distanced their organisation from Jamil Abubakar, a member of the Dangote family, 24 hours after he justified the killing of Deborah Samuel by islamic extremists.

Nigerians with the impression that Mr Abubakar was an Azman Air staff launched tirades against the company for employing the services of a perceived religious bigot.

Dissociating the airline from Mr Abubakar, Azman Air released a statement to inform Nigerians that the pilot had ceased to be their staff since 2019.

“PUBLIC NOTICE: Capt Jamil Abubakar is no longer a pilot @AzmanAir; his last flight with us was 22nd Dec 2019,” Azman Air said in a rebuttal tweet. “We refuse to take responsibility for a comment or view of a former staff. The general public should kindly take note.”

Ms Samuel, a 200 level Home-Economics student accused of blasphemy, had complained bitterly over the influx of religious broadcast messages shared to her department’s WhatsApp page.

Her complaints elicited the fury of fanatic coursemates and schoolmates who stoned her to death and set her lifeless body ablaze.

Deborah Yakubu: Number of those arrested not enough – Catholic Laity Council

The Catholic Laity Council of Nigeria has said the number of those arrested over the brutal killing of Deborah Yakubu is not enough.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports National President of the Council, Mr Henry Yunwap made this known in a statement issued in Jos on Sunday.

Yunwap expressed concern about the killing of Deborah, a student of Shehu Shagari College of Education, Sokoto for alleged blasphemy.

He said that there was no justification whatsoever for the dastardly act.

Yunwap called on federal and Sokoto State governments to, as a matter of urgency and for the unity of the country, go beyond just condemning the act.

He urged the authorities to ensure that all those involved in her killing were arrested and punished according to the laws of the land.

“We want to remind the federal government that this is not the first time such act is taking place in the country all in the name of religion.

“The reason we are witnessing same now is because the expected action to serve as deterrent was never taken as the perpetrators were often left to go scot-free.

“God remains powerful and can never be represented by any mortal called human being.

“Our religious leaders must preach that always as no human being can take life he never created no matter the circumstances,” he said.

Yunwap called on Christians to remain calm and resolute, especially in a time such as this as emphasised by the Catholic Bishop of Sokoto, the Most Rev. Matthew Kuka, in his statement.

He said that all citizens must do all it would take to make the country habitable for everybody irrespective of his or her religion and location.

“We commend the pro-activeness of the Sokoto State government and the security agents for arresting two persons.

“However, we state here that the number of those arrested is not enough considering the number of those that took part in the act as seen in some videos that went viral,” he said.

Yunwap condoled with the family of the deceased, prayed to God to grant them the fortitude to bear the loss.
