Edo 2024: PDP holds LG delegates election

The Edo chapter of the PDP governorship primary on Saturday conducted Local Government Delegates Election ahead of its Feb. 22 governorship primary.

The delegates congress took place simultaneously across the 18 local government areas of the state, except in Etsako Central.

The party had on Feb. 4 conducted the ward delegates election and Etsako Central was cancelled due to alleged abduction of nine electoral officers

A correspondent who monitored the election at Oredo Local Government Area, reports that 35 delegates voted while one was absent.

The congress was conducted by two PDP officials namely Owolabi Kayode and Farida Umar from the National Headquarters, and monitored by officials of the INEC in the presence of some security agencies.

At the end of the exercise, Osaro Idah emerged the elected delegate for the  Oredo Local Government Area.

  • Edo PDP demands cancellation of wards delegates election results

Edo PDP demands cancellation of wards delegates election results

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo has called for the cancellation of the outcome of wards delegates election held on Saturday in the state.

This is contained in a statement by the State Publicity Secretary of the party, Mr Ogie Vasco, and made available to NAN, Abuja on Wednesday.

According to Vasco, the call for the cancellation became imperative in view of what transpired on that day.

He said that what transpired that day was not a true reflection of the PDP Congress in the state.

“So arising from the purported sham called congress, the leaders of the Edo State Chapter of the PDP reject in totality the results of the purported ward congresses.

“Also after a cursory overview of the whole, the leaders in their wisdom have denounced the whole process as a sham marred by acute manipulation.

“The office of the National Organising Secretary published three conflicting letters on the composition of officers in charge of the congress both at the wards and local government areas.

“The last letter consisted of names of serving government officials in Edo and Delta States.

The state publicity secretary also said that the irregular act was communicated to the national leadership of the party by the nine aspirants so affected, yet nothing was done.

“Where then is the fairness the NWC (National Working Committee) has preached in the various engagements with stakeholders leading to this Congress?

“These and other infractions observed need to be addressed properly.

“Consequently, the leadership of the party calls on all party faithful to join in the call to right the wrongs of the sham perpetrated this past weekend. And also call for a total cancellation of the exercise”, Vasco said.

These state councils which are under the leadership of the Caretaker Committees include Abia, Imo, and Osun states.

According to him, this is to inform all affiliates especially those with State Councils in Imo state of the indefinite suspension of the earlier proposed state delegates Conference in the state due to unforeseen circumstances.

  • REVEALED: Number of sponsored delegates by FG to COP28

REVEALED: Number of sponsored delegates by FG to COP28

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Mohammed Idris, said the Federal Government sponsored 422 delegates to the ongoing COP28 in Dubai, not 1,411.

Idris clarified in a statement on Monday in Abuja.

COP28, the Convention of Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, is the world’s pre-eminent Climate Change Conference.

The minister said the clarification became necessary because of the public conversation on the number of delegates from Nigeria attending the ongoing Climate Summit in Dubai.

He explained that the Conference was being attended this year by over 70,000 participants and delegates from over 100 countries.

According.to him, Nigeria’s representation is very much in line with our status as Africa’s leading Sovereign voice and player in climate action.

“Parties to this Convention from Nigeria include government officials, representatives from the private sector, civil society, the voluntary sector, state governments, media, multilateral institutions, representatives of marginalised communities, and many others.

“It is imperative to point out that the overall Nigerian delegation to COP28 comprises Government-sponsored (Federal and State) and non-government-sponsored participants (from Private Companies, NGOs, CSOs, Media, academia), etc.

“The Federal Government-funded delegation is made up of a total of 422 persons, as follows: 32 persons from National Council on Climate Change and 34 from Federal Ministry of Environment

“Others were 167 delegates from all ministries, 67 from the presidency, 9 from the Office of the Vice President, 40 from National Assembly and 73 from  Federal Parastatals/Agencies,” Idris said.

The Minister further explained that, as the biggest economy and most populous country in Africa, with a substantial extractive economy and extensive vulnerability to climate change, Nigeria had a significant stake in climate action,

“Therefore, our active and robust participation at COP is therefore not unwarranted”.

According to the minister, COP28 presents an array of investment and partnership opportunities for the various sectors affected by climate change, and Nigeria is already benefiting from its ongoing participation.

“Nigeria and Germany signed an accelerated performance agreement to expedite the implementation of the Presidential Power Initiative to improve Nigeria’s electricity supply.

“The agreement was signed by Mr Kenny Anuwe, the Managing Director and CEO of FGN Power Company, and Ms Nadja Haakansson, Siemens Energy’s Senior Vice President and Managing Director for Africa, at a ceremony witnessed by President Tinubu and Chancellor Scholz.

“Also, President Tinubu hosted a high-level meeting with stakeholders and investors on the Nigeria Carbon Market and the Electric Buses Rollout Programme on the margins of the COP28 climate summit.

“Similarly, the President unveiled the Nigeria Carbon Market Activation Plan, co-chaired by the Executive Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service, Mr Zacch Adedeji, and the Director-General of the National Council on Climate Change Dr Dahiru Salisu.

“The Electric Buses programme is only the first step in a series of innovative, clean, modern, and sustainable initiatives across diverse sectors, all aimed at simultaneously addressing climate change-related challenges,

“It also aimed at reducing carbon footprint, modernising infrastructure systems, and positioning Nigeria as an attractive destination for global investments,” Idris said.

According to him, Nigeria stands to benefit from the Loss and Damage Fund established during COP27 in Egypt and formally operationalised at the opening plenary of COP28 in Dubai.

He added that the Fund would provide substantial non-debt financing to support countries most affected by the impact of climate change.

Idris disclosed that hundreds of millions of dollars had already been pledged as contributions to the Fund.

“The President also met the President of UAE to concretise engagements between the two countries. This is aside from the bilateral talks held with several countries and multilateral partners.

“However, it should be highlighted that, over the years, Nigeria has firmly demonstrated its climate action credentials by being the first African country to launch its Energy Transition Plan.

“We are the first African country to issue a Sovereign Green Bond, and one of the first to pass national climate change legislation.

“President Tinubu has been unequivocal in his position that Africa, which is battling problems of poverty and security and struggling to provide education and healthcare to her people, cannot be told to abandon its primary source of income,

“And the source of income is mostly from extractive industries, without the West providing the funding and investment in alternative and clean energy sources,” he said.

The minister explained that since assumption of office, president Tinubu had been a vocal champion for the African continent on the global stage, whether at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), the G20, or the ongoing COP28.

Idris further stressed that Tunubu had been supported by an equally active and engaged Nigerian delegations at these various fora.

“It is, therefore, essential to keep setting the records straight while assuring Nigerians that President Tinubu and other officials on the Federal government delegation are in Dubai for serious business, not a jamboree”.

  • Kogi election: Court nullifies APC delegates list

Kogi election: Court nullifies APC delegates list

The Federal High Court, Abuja on Wednesday, nullified and set aside the ward and local government congresses conducted on Feb. 7 by the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kogi.

The congresses were conducted for the purpose of nominating a governorship candidate for the November governorship election in the state.

Justice James Omotosho nullified and set aside the congresses while delivering judgment in a suit instituted by a group of aggrieved APC members led by Mr Realwan Okpanachi.

The court voided the two congresses on the grounds that they were not conducted in compliance with the Electoral Act 2022, and the constitution of the APC.

The court barred the Independent National Electoral Commission, (INEC)  from recognising or using the unlawful delegates list that emanated from unlawful congresses for the party for the purpose of selecting its governorship flag bearer.

Justice Omotosho ordered the APC leadership to conduct fresh congresses that would be in compliance Section 84 of the Electoral Act, 2022 and Section 13 of the party’s constitution.

The judge agreed with the plaintiffs that the APC in Kogi failed to conduct ward and local government congresses as stipulated by relevant provisions of the law.

He also agreed with Mr Ogwu James Onoja, SAN, and counsel to the plaintiffs, that the APC breached Section 84 of the Electoral Act and Section 13 of its own constitution.

He said this was by concocting the purported list of delegates and submitting same to INEC without the knowledge of registered members of the party in the state.

The judge held that during the trial of the case, the APC failed to disclose the venues and times where the purported ward and local government congresses were held.

He said the party also failed to show the report of INEC officials that purportedly monitored the elections.

He further held that the APC failed to produce the result sheet to show the scores recorded by the participants in the purported congresses.

The judge said that the major document put at the disposal of the court to justify the conduct of the said  Feb. 7 congresses, did not contain a single name of any human being.

He said it rather had signatures of imaginary participants at the purported congresses.

With the absence of names on the documents, the judge said that the exhibit was worthless and that no probate value could be attached to it because it was against Section 133 of the Evidence Act.

Earlier,  the judge dismissed the preliminary objections raised by APC that the court had no jurisdiction to entertain the suit.

Plaintiffs in the suit marked FHC/ABJ/CS/329/2023 are Realwan Okpanachi, Yahaya Nuhu, Omaonu  Arome, Mustapha Idoko, Aku  Goodman and Abu Onechiojo.

The APC and INEC are the 1st and 2nd defendants.
