  • Fear as flesh-eating disease rocks Adamawa, 28 infected

Fear as flesh-eating disease rocks Adamawa, 28 infected

    … as NCDC probes outbreak

A strange epidemic has hit Adamawa State, leaving at least 28 people infected with a rare disease that eats away at human flesh and destroys bones, igniting fresh fears about Nigeria’s readiness to confront emerging health crises.

The Chairman of the Adamawa State Primary Healthcare Development Agency, Dr. Suleiman Bashir, confirmed the outbreak to journalists on Saturday, disclosing that several patients are currently receiving treatment at the Modibbo Adama University Teaching Hospital (MAUTH), Yola.

According to him, samples from the affected individuals have been sent to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), Abuja, for histology and advanced laboratory analysis.

    Low Acceptance of Medical Care

Despite the government covering all costs of treatment at MAUTH, only eight victims have agreed to undergo medical care. Many others, driven by poverty, fear, or cultural beliefs, have turned to traditional medicine and local healers.

Dr. Bashir warned that this could worsen the situation, stressing the need for residents to report unusual health conditions promptly to curb further spread.
Victims’ Accounts: “It Started Like a Boil”

The outbreak has been most severe in Malabu community, Fufore Local Government Area, where locals describe the disease as beginning with a small boil that later bursts, forming a festering wound that eats into flesh and bone.

One victim, Mrs. Phibi Sabo, narrated her ordeal:

Another patient, Junaidu Adamu, said he had already spent more than ₦200,000 in two months seeking treatment, but his condition had only deteriorated.

    Community Confirms Widespread Infection

The District Head of Malabu, Aliyu Hammawa, confirmed that no fewer than 30 residents had shown symptoms of the strange illness. He added that while eight patients were admitted to MAUTH, others were receiving care in smaller facilities or being treated at home.

Nigeria’s Troubled History with Mysterious Outbreaks

The Adamawa outbreak has rekindled national concern about Nigeria’s preparedness for sudden epidemics, especially in rural areas where reliance on traditional medicine is high.

Nigeria has a history of puzzling and deadly outbreaks:

1996 – Kano Meningitis Epidemic: Over 100,000 infected, thousands dead; led to the controversial Pfizer Trovan trial.
2010 – Zamfara Lead Poisoning: Hundreds of children died from contamination linked to artisanal mining.
2015 – Ondo “Strange Skin Disease”: Victims suffered rashes, ear and nose bleeding; traced to pesticide exposure.
2014 – Ebola Virus: Nigeria successfully contained the outbreak through rapid contact tracing and awareness campaigns, earning global praise.
2017 – Monkeypox Resurgence: Virus re-emerged after decades, spreading to multiple states.
Recurring Outbreaks: Lassa fever and cholera epidemics still kill hundreds annually due to weak health surveillance and poor sanitation.

    Growing Concerns Over Preparedness

Public health experts warn that the Adamawa outbreak highlights gaps in Nigeria’s healthcare system, particularly in early detection, rural health infrastructure, and public trust in modern medicine.

While the NCDC continues its investigations, the state government has urged vigilance, early reporting, and stronger collaboration between medical professionals and communities to prevent the disease from spreading further.

Oborevwori Building Roads to Stand the Test of Time – Izeze

Delta State Commissioner for Works (Highways and Urban Roads), Comrade Reuben Izeze, has said the Governor Sheriff Oborevwori administration is executing road projects that will not only be completed on schedule but also put an end to years of failed repairs with durable, long-lasting solutions.

Izeze gave the assurance on Thursday during an inspection of the reconstruction of Sokoh Estate Road, Off Airport Road, Effurun in Uvwie; the rehabilitation of Ughwrughelli/Erhidi roads; and the construction of Chief Lyn Ivie Akporiche Street in Agbarho, Ughelli North.

Speaking at the famous Sokoh Estate Road, Izeze said the Oborevwori administration is committed to delivering quality urban and highway projects that will stand the test of time.

He recalled his earlier promise to residents that the 1,350-meter road would be reconstructed to last a minimum of 20 years, permanently ending the perennial flooding and erosion that plagued the area during rainy seasons.

“The Sheriff in town has come with a solution. By December, the people will understand that Governor Sheriff Oborevwori is truly a son of the soil who has finally delivered on Sokoh Estate Road,” the commissioner said.

He commended the contractors for the standard of work so far, describing it as “up to prescription,” while urging them to sustain quality and increase their pace despite the challenges posed by torrential rains and underground water in the area.

Izeze also praised residents of Sokoh Estate and adjoining streets for their patience and cooperation, noting that there had been no reports of interference or harassment of the contractors.

“This governor is a governor of the streets with plenty of street credibility. People respect him and the new order. I thank the residents for providing an enabling environment for the contractors to work,” he said.

On the Ughwrughelli/Erhidi road and the Agbarho project, Izeze said Governor Oborevwori is determined to deliver them before the end of the year.

He acknowledged the slow pace of work at the Ughwrughelli road due to flooding challenges but directed the contractors to double their efforts to ensure timely completion.

“With the level of commitment we are seeing, the people of Agbarho will have their road inaugurated by the end of this year, in line with the governor’s promise,” the commissioner assured.

  • DESOPADEC Aligned With Oborevwori’s M.O.R.E Agenda — Delta Fresh Vision

DESOPADEC Aligned With Oborevwori’s M.O.R.E Agenda — Delta Fresh Vision

Delta Fresh Vision has reaffirmed that the Delta State Oil- Producing Areas Development Commission (DESOPADEC) remains a key driver of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s M.O.R.E Agenda, dismissing claims that the administration had de-prioritized the interventionist agency.

In a statement jointly signed by its Acting Chairman, Wilberforce Arinze, and Public Relations Officer, Grace Akaighe, the group described as “ill-informed and mischievous” the narrative that DESOPADEC had been sidelined in favour of broader state-wide development policies.

According to the group, DESOPADEC was established by law to cater for the socio-economic advancement of oil-bearing communities in Delta State, with equal representation across the Urhobo, Itsekiri, Ijaw, Isoko, Ndokwa, and Ika nationalities.

They stressed that the Commission, under Governor Oborevwori’s watch, has been fully aligned with his administration’s M.O.R.E Agenda, recording significant projects in infrastructure, healthcare, education, housing, security, environment, and human capital development.

The statement highlighted that DESOPADEC had delivered over 60 road and jetty projects across various ethnic nationalities, built new health centres in communities such as Egbokodo, Ugbori, Ode-Itsekiri, and Orugbo, and upgraded facilities at Koko General Hospital, Egberide, and Utagba-Uno.

The group added that in the housing sector, more than 50 residential bungalows had been constructed in communities, including Oboghoro, Ajansan, Ogheye-Egboroke, Kokodiagbene, and Tuomo.

In the education sector, it said that over 55 schools have been renovated or newly built, including Iwere College, Beach Secondary School, and Azama Zion Primary School, alongside the provision of ICT facilities.

According to the group, the Commission had also expanded electricity access, installed solar-powered street lights, improved water supply systems, and provided transformers to underserved areas.

On environmental and security measures, the group stated that DESOPADEC had invested in canalization, shore wall construction, and desilting projects to mitigate flooding, as well as constructed police stations and residential quarters to boost security.

The group noted that the DESOPADEC Skills Academy had empowered thousands of youths and women with starter packs, seed grants, and vocational training in ICT, fashion, welding, catering, and other trades.

Young entrepreneurs received N500,000 grants, while women beneficiaries were supported with N100,000 each, alongside equipment such as laptops, generators, ovens, and tailoring machines, the group stated.

Delta Fresh Vision also applauded Governor Oborevwori for being the first governor in the state to extend the enhanced minimum wage to DESOPADEC staff, a move they said had boosted morale and strengthened institutional stability.

Reaffirming the credibility of DESOPADEC’s leadership, the statement commended the Commission’s Managing Director, Chief Festus Ochonogor, and Chairman, John Nani, for their dedication in executing the Governor’s vision for oil-bearing communities.
It recalled that the Host Communities of Nigeria (HOSTCOM) had earlier in 2025 also passed a vote of confidence on the Commission’s management.

Consequently, Delta Fresh Vision urged Deltans to disregard the “false narratives” being peddled by critics, stressing that DESOPADEC remained firmly on course under the Oborevwori’s administration.

Admonishing the youths to remain steadfast and committed to the leadership and M.O.R.E. agenda of his Excellency Elder Sheriff Oborevwor, Chief Ochonogor said the idea of “pull him down syndrome” should not be encouraged amongst them, advising that they should rather join hands together to encourage their leaders in power so that they can do more.

Earlier, the delegation led by Comrade Azaka Fidelis had expressed heartfelt appreciation for the Commission’s developmental strides across Ndokwa land under the stewardship of Chief Ochonogor, particularly the ongoing infrastructural projects, youth empowerment initiatives and community development programs that have significantly impacted oil-producing communities in the region.

“Chief Ochonogor has shown exemplary leadership, transparency and an uncommon commitment to inclusive development. We have come today not just to thank him, but to pass a vote of confidence on him and encourage him to continue on this laudable path that brings hope and progress to our people,” Comr. Azaka said.

He further informed Chief Ochonogor of the desire of the group to invite him to the inauguration of the group which according to him, will take place on a date to be announced soon.

Highlight of the occasion was the symbolic presentation of a giant live fish to the DESOPADEC Boss as a token of appreciation from Ikolobia Ndokwa as well as a group photograph to commemorate the event.

The occasion not only strengthened the bond between the Commission and the Ndokwa people but also served as a reminder of the impact of collaborative efforts in achieving regional development goals.

Oborevwori’s 6-lane waterfront project will check rising rents in Asaba — Izeze(Photos)

Delta State Commissioner for Works (Highways and Urban Roads), Comrade Reuben Izeze, has assured that Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s six-lane Asaba Waterfront City project will not only transform the state capital’s landscape but also ease the pressure of skyrocketing house rents in Asaba.

Speaking during an inspection tour of the project on Tuesday, Izeze explained that the road, being executed under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) between the Delta State Government and North China Construction Company, will open up the Waterfront City and boost housing supply in the capital.

“With projects like this, simple economics will come into play as supply increases, demand pressure will ease, and rents will crash. We believe this will solve the problem of outrageous house rents in Asaba,” the Commissioner stated.

He added that the project would also help decongest the already overcrowded city centre while curbing the menace of illegal and temporary structures that had previously taken over the area.

“This place, about four years ago, was already turning into a shanty where all kinds of characters were putting up illegal structures. With this project, we are creating a completely new city that will ease the pressure on Asaba,” Izeze said.

On the quality of work done, the Works Commissioner expressed satisfaction with progress on the six-lane carriageway, which was first awarded by the previous administration but gained full momentum under Governor Sheriff Oborevwori.

“I have inspected this road about four times now, and I can say the quality of the structural work is reasonably good. Now that they are at the asphalting stage, I expect them to strictly adhere to the Bill of Engineering Measurement and Evaluation, particularly with the thickness and quality of asphalt applied,” he noted.

Izeze further commended the aesthetics of the project, describing it as “quite attractive to the eyes,” and urged the contractors to take advantage of the dry season to complete both the binder and friction courses so the road can be delivered for use.

  • Future Of Healthcare Delivery In Delta Bright With Oborevwori — NMA

Future Of Healthcare Delivery In Delta Bright With Oborevwori — NMA

The Nigeria Medical Association (NMA), Delta State branch, Tuesday, expressed confidence that the future of healthcare delivery in the state remains bright under the administration of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori.

The Association, led by its Chairman, Dr. Israel Adaigho, stated this during a courtesy visit to the Governor at Government House, Asaba.

Dr. Adaigho lauded Governor Oborevwori’s led government for what he described as massive achievements and excellence in primary healthcare, the Contributory Health Scheme, improved maternal and child healthcare through the establishment of mobile clinics, and the strengthening of health institutions across the state.

He listed key strides to include; the establishment of the College of Health Technology, Ovrode; College of Medical Sciences, Southern Delta University, Ozoro; and the College of Nursing, Onicha-Uku, alongside the renovation of over 150 primary healthcare centres.

He further highlighted the provision of hospital equipment such as MRI machines and 25 units of 4D ultrasound scanners, as well as Delta’s pioneering payment of medical residency training funds ahead of the Federal Government.

Beyond the health sector, Dr. Adaigho praised the Governor for critical infrastructural projects such as the completion of the Ughelli–Asaba Road dualisation project, the construction of flyovers in Effurun and Warri, and the clearance of backlog pension payments for state and local government retirees.

While pledging the association’s continued partnership with government, he also drew attention to some challenges confronting health workers, including manpower shortages.

In his response, Governor Oborevwori commended the NMA for its role in safeguarding quality healthcare and for the sacrifices made by doctors and medical workers who continue to serve in Nigeria despite the lure of better opportunities overseas.

He listed some of his administration’s recent interventions, including the procurement of eight dialysis machines, three each for Asaba Specialist Hospital and Central Hospital, Warri, and two for DELSUTH, Oghara as well as three MRI machines, one for each senatorial district of the state.

Re-emphasising the value of doctors serving at home, the Governor said: “It is better for our doctors to work in Nigeria and earn their respect than to go abroad and become care assistants.”

Oborevwori assured that his administration would look into the requests tabled by the association and reaffirmed his commitment to equipping Delta hospitals with medical facilities comparable to those in developed countries. He approved the release of a bus to the Association.
