The Man, Rt. Hon. Sheriff F. O Oborevwori – By Festus Ahon

    By Festus Ahon

“Great oaks,” it is often said, “grow from little acorns.” Though an age-old adage, it remains as true today as when it was first uttered.

In the life and journey of Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, the Governor of Delta State, this wise saying finds vivid expression.

Born on June 19, 1963, to the family of Chief Samuel Oborevwori of Osubi in Okpe Local Government Area of Delta State, Sheriff Oborevwori’s early education began at Alegbo Primary School, Effurun, where he completed his primary education in 1977. He proceeded to Oghareki Grammar School, Oghareki, for his secondary education, and later earned a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science from Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, Edo State, in 2004. In 2010, he obtained a Master’s degree in the same field from Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka.

Beyond his formal academic pursuits, Sheriff Oborevwori—who holds the distinction of being the longest-serving Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly—has undertaken advanced studies in various prestigious institutions, further preparing him for the demands of leadership.

His educational credentials include: Certificate in Top Executive Leadership Programme, Manchester Business School, UK. Certificate in Legislative Framework for Budget Management, Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, USA. Certificate in Legislative Management and Leadership, International Law Institute, Washington D.C., USA. Certificate in Leading Inclusive Development, London School of Economics and Political Science, UK.Certificate in Advanced Leadership Programme, University of Cambridge, UK.

He is also a Fellow of the Nigerian Institute of Management (Chartered) and a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Mediators and Conciliators (FICMC).

Widely regarded as an astute politician with a unique talent for grassroots mobilization, Sheriff Oborevwori’s political career spans both legislative and executive arms of government. He has also served at both the local and state levels of governance.

His public service journey includes: Councillor/Supervisory Councillor for Works, old Okpe Local Government Area (which then included present-day Udu and Uvwie LGAs), 1996. Special Assistant on Youth Development 2003–2006. Special Adviser to Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan on Land Security, 2007–2010. State Coordinator of the Amnesty Programme, 2009–2010. Senior Special Assistant on Security to the State Governor, 2012–2014.

Today, as Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori continues to demonstrate the leadership maturity, political savvy, and developmental focus that have defined his journey—a journey that began humbly but has grown into the towering oak of public service.

    Yet, that is not all.

Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori served as the member representing Okpe State Constituency in the Delta State House of Assembly (DTHA) from 2015 to 2019. He was elected Speaker of the Sixth Assembly in 2017 and re-elected Speaker of the Seventh Assembly in 2019—becoming the first Deltan to serve as Speaker across two consecutive assemblies. He also held key national leadership positions as Treasurer of the Conference of Speakers of State Legislatures of Nigeria (2018–2020) and later as Deputy Chairman of the Conference (2020 until his election as Governor).

Associates describe Governor Sheriff Oborevwori as a deeply empathetic and perceptive leader—one whose love for people transcends status, faith, race, and culture. He is seen as a powerful embodiment of both continuity and change, a bridge builder with a familiar face and a refreshing new vision, clearly outlined in his administration’s MORE Agenda.

The MORE Agenda stands for: Meaningful Development; Opportunities for All, Realistic Reforms, and Enhanced Peace and Security.

Under Meaningful Development, the Governor is committed to economic growth, environmental sustainability, human capital development, and the delivery of critical infrastructure.

With Opportunities for All, his administration promotes inclusiveness, equity, and fairness, ensuring that all stakeholders are engaged in the development process.

Through Realistic Reforms, he is building on the solid foundation laid by the previous administration under Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa. Governor Sheriff Oborevwori is focused on improving governance, enhancing service delivery, and strengthening public sector efficiency. His priorities include boosting the capacity of the civil service, advancing data-driven planning, and fully automating the state’s accounting and human resource management systems.

On Enhanced Peace and Security, Governor Oborevwori is engaging key stakeholders to foster dialogue and unity, promoting cultural and inter-community exchanges, empowering youths through productive ventures to reduce restiveness, and encouraging cooperation among security agencies. He is also strengthening early warning systems to ensure timely and effective conflict resolution.

MORE Agenda: Envisaged Goals and Outcomes

In Africa, it is often said that no one tells a man’s story better than the man himself. In this spirit, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori declares: “With our vision and mission driven by the gearwheel of MORE, I will listen more, do more, and achieve more.” This commitment is clearly articulated in his manifesto.

Today, after two years of dedicated implementation, the MORE Agenda is delivering tangible results across key sectors. Its outcomes include: Increased job creation, Growth in capital inflow, Higher Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and Internally Generated Revenue (IGR), Expansion in the export of raw and processed agricultural products, Strengthening of the state’s economy, Enhanced living standards for Deltans and residents, Environmental rejuvenation and sustainability, Upgraded infrastructure across the state, Improved educational and healthcare systems and greater social stability, reflected in enhanced security of lives and property.

The MORE Agenda continues to chart a progressive and inclusive path for Delta State, positioning it as a model of sustainable development in Nigeria.

Oborevwori’s China trip to deliver innovations in waste Mgt, boost investment in Delta — Aniagwu

The Delta State Government says residents should expect game-changing benefits including innovations in waste management and increased investment attraction from Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s recent trip to China.

The State Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Mr. Charles Aniagwu who accompanied the Governor on the trip, spoke at a press conference in Asaba, the state capital.

Flanked by Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Sir Festus Ahon and Executive Assistant to the Governor on Public Enlightenment (Projects and Policies), Mr Olisa Ifeajika, Aniagwu, said the invitation extended to Governor Oborevwori to attend the 16th International Infrastructure Investment and Construction Forum (IIICF) and Exhibition in Macau was based on the Delta State’s track record of delivering quality infrastructure and prompt payment of contracts.

“We were invited on account of two major policies of the Oborevwori administration. One is his nack for excellence in terms of the job that is being executed.

“Two is the very, very unprecedented approach to both project mobilization and the prompt payment of certificates that are raised genuinely.

“These are contractors across the globe who also do jobs or carry out jobs or construction work in different parts of the globe. They have seen that the Oborevwori model is good for development,” he explained.

He outlined key areas of engagement by the governor during the China trip, including partnerships of modern waste management systems, rural infrastructure development, and investment opportunities.

He said: “We saw a company that is into transforming waste materials that you could gather from dumps, which of course is available everywhere, and has become a challenge for us across the length and breadth of this country, but that you can convert it and use it to generate energy and power your homes.

“That is something of interest, and we are quite convinced in the thinking of the governor that we will advance that discussion so that we will see how possibly we can attract that kind of investment.

“We are proud to have been invited to a top-tier construction forum in Macau, China, an honor linked to Governor Oborevwori’s commitment to excellence and prompt contractor payments. These policies have gained international recognition, positioning Delta State as a model for quality infrastructure.”

He added that Governor Oborevwori’s insistence on world-class project standards impressed global players at the forum, reinforcing that all contractors in Delta must prioritize quality, further boosting confidence in the state’s transparent, results-driven governance.

“Recognition from China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC), a global infrastructure giant, validates our administration’s credibility. With their vast global portfolio, CCECC’s commendation confirms that Delta meets top engineering standards.

“The forum also opened doors for partnerships, especially in waste-to-energy. These engagements aim to elevate Delta from a local player to a respected global stakeholder in sustainable development,” he added.

During the briefing, Mr. Aniagwu also reiterated that the Oborevwori administration is committed to upholding the integrity of contractual agreements.

He said: “Every contract has defined terms and a set duration, and once either party fails to meet those obligations, repudiation is both legal and necessary.

“A government focused on delivering timely infrastructure must act when projects fall behind schedule or violate terms, especially when public funds are involved.

“Several underperforming contracts have already been revoked and re-awarded, with new contractors now delivering at the expected pace. This approach ensures that Deltans receive value for money and that critical projects are not unnecessarily delayed due to inefficiency or lack of commitment from contractors.

“Going forward, any contractor failing to meet standards regardless of influence or backing will have their contract terminated.

“Governor Oborevwori is prioritizing results and service to the people, not personal interests. The administration remains firm in its resolve to ensure only capable contractors handle public projects.”

Aniagwu further said the Oborevwori administration has directed the Environment Taskforce to recover all government lands illegally occupied by individuals.

He said: “A clear example is the airport land, where encroachment threatens safety and could lead to loss of operational license. Securing the airport’s perimeter is critical to ensure safety from hazards like stray animals or fire outbreaks near the runway.

“Illegal structures have also been removed from key government areas, such as the Waterboard premises along Okpanam Road. Despite issuing warnings and providing ample notice, some individuals still erected shanties on government property.

“The administration now warns that future violators will not only be evicted but also prosecuted, as part of a broader effort to reclaim lands across all 25 local government areas.

“The government urges citizens to avoid acquiring lands without proper verification. If a government-owned property is no longer in use, the right approach is to request deacquisition through official channels not to trespass.

“Buying or building on government land without due process is a risk, as such properties will be reclaimed without compensation, regardless of personal investment.”

AIG sounds strong warning as stakeholders over Warri ward delineation crisis

AIG Garba Salma-Dogo, in charge of Zone Five, has met with stakeholders from Warri and environs, as part of efforts to address the crisis over the INEC ward delineation exercise in the area.

The Zonal Police Public Relations Officer (ZPPRO) for the zone comprising Edo and Delta, SP Tijani Momoh, said this in a statement on Friday.

Salma-Dogo explained that the meeting was conveyed at the instance of the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun.

He also said that the meeting was conveyed as parts of effort to enhance peace, safety and security in Warri and environs in particular and Delta at large.

He stressed the need for stakeholders to control their youths, and refrain them from making inciting and inflammatory statements, especially on the social media.

He also warned against name-calling and social media protest, saying it will not be tolerated henceforth. According to him, anyone caught will be arrested and prosecuted accordingly.

He also warned that no ethnic group should refer to another ethnic group as “customary tenants”, adding that any further breakdown of law and order would not be tolerated.

The AIG noted that there was no difference between the Ijaws, Itsekiris and Urhobos and warned all to avoid any issues that would cause a repeat of the 2003/2004 crisis.

Earlier the Commissioner of Police Delta State, Olufemi Abaniwonda, explained that the delineation exercise carried out by INEC in Warri, had brought about problems among the three ethnic groups in the area.

Abaniwonda said he was therefore seeking the intervention of the AIG to help forestall further escalation and break down of law and order.

Other speakers include representatives of Ogbe-Ijoh Kingdom, Okere Urhobo Kingdom, Isaba Kingdom, Agbarha Warri Kingdom, Gbaramatu kingdom, and the three local government chairmen.

All speakers sued for peace, saying that they do not want a crisis in the area.

They also noted that the delineation exercise had not been finalised, and that INEC had asked all aggrieved parties to study the draft and bring up their complaints, observations and contributions.

They unanimously agreed to work for the peace and security of Warri kingdom, and pledged to call their youths to order.

Present at the meeting also were the Area Commander Warri, the Local Government Chairmen of Warri South West, Warri North and Warri South, as well as the spokesperson and representative of Gbaramatu Kingdom.

Others were the representative from the Palace of the Olu of Warri, the Pere of Ogbe-Ijoh among other highly placed figures.

  • Delta North APC dissolves LGAs, ward chairmen forums

Delta North APC dissolves LGAs, ward chairmen forums

The All Progressives Congress (APC)  has announced the immediate dissolution of the Forums of Delta North APC Local Government Area (LGA) Chairmen and Ward Chairmen in the Delta North Senatorial District.

This is contained in a statement by the senatorial chairman of the party, Chief Adizue Eluaka, in Abuja on Friday.

Eluaka said that the dissolution of the forum was to restore order and reinforce discipline within party ranks,

He explained that the forum which distanced itself from the recent endorsement of Sen. Ned Nwoko for a second term was an “unauthorised and unconstitutional body”.

He added that the actions of the dissolved forum does not reflect the collective will of the party structure in Delta North.

At a well-attended APC stakeholders meeting on June 14, hosted by Nwoko at his country home in Idumuje-Ugboko, a vote of confidence was passed on President Bola Tinubu, Delta Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, and the lawmaker by party leaders and members.

However a few days later, some APC local government areas chairmen in the zone reportedly distanced themselves from the endorsement, saying it lacked legitimacy.

Reacting Eluaka said the APC in the zone would not sit and watch a few sponsored individuals
cause disunity and disaffection in the party.

“We will not sit and watch a few disgruntled, sponsored individuals under the guise of a forum that is unknown to our constitution, cause disunity and disaffection in our party.

“The APC is a window of opportunity for growth, and these actions are clearly self-serving,” he said.

The Delta North APC chairman added that going forward, all party dealings would be handled with LGA and ward chairmen on an individual basis, with no recognition of collective bodies not sanctioned by the party’s constitution.

“Any meeting convened by these dissolved bodies, or by any group unknown to the party structure, will be deemed illegal and appropriate disciplinary actions will be taken,” he warned.

  • Isoko Youths distance themselves from ISOPLOT’s Warri statement

Isoko Youths distance themselves from ISOPLOT’s Warri statement

The Isoko National Youth Assembly (INYA) has firmly distanced the Isoko Nation from ISOPLOT’s recent statement on the Warri delineation exercise, describing the group’s interference as unprovoked and misinformed.

INYA President, Comrade Eniwake Orogun and Secretary-General, Governor Emumena, in a statement said the Isoko people are not stakeholders in the Warri Federal Constituency, and as such, any attempt by ISOPLOT to speak on the issue is both unwarranted and damaging.

INYA reaffirmed its commitment to pursuing legitimate Isoko concerns, particularly the restoration of a second constituency in Isoko North.

It is with profound concern and a necessary sense of duty that the Isoko National Youth Assembly Worldwide (INYA Worldwide), the umbrella body representing Isoko youths globally, is compelled to address a recent publication masquerading as the voice of the Isoko people.

We categorically denounce and disassociate the entire Isoko Nation from the press statement issued on June 16th, 2025, by an obscure entity called “Isoko Political Youth Leaders of Thought” (ISOPLOT).

While the Nigerian constitution guarantees freedom of association and expression, this fundamental right does not confer legitimacy or authority upon any random collection of individuals to arrogate to themselves the mantle of speaking for the Isoko youths, let alone the Isoko nation.

ISOPLOT is unknown to the Isoko socio-political structure. It possesses no mandate, no broad-based membership, and no traceable lineage within our established youth leadership frameworks. It is, at best, an unauthorized and potentially mischievous subgroup operating in the shadows.

The core subject of the ISOPLOT statement – the INEC ward delineation exercise in Warri Metropolis – is fundamentally NOT an Isoko issue. The Isoko people are not constituents of the Warri Federal Constituency. The delineation exercise primarily concerns the territorial and political dynamics between the Ijaw, Itsekiri, and Urhobo ethnic groups within that specific geographical area.

We are utterly perplexed by ISOPLOT’s motives in dragging the Isoko Nation into this complex inter-ethnic matter. What business does an Isoko group have dictating terms or stoking fears about ward allocations in Warri, a territory far removed from our ancestral lands and political jurisdiction? This unwarranted interference raises serious questions about ISOPLOT’s true sponsors and intentions.

While ISOPLOT fabricates outrage over Warri, the Isoko nation has a legitimate and pressing grievance with INEC that they conveniently ignore. Prior to the last statewide delineation exercise, Isoko North Local Government Area had TWO State Constituencies. This was in recognition of our population and contribution. Shockingly and unjustly, INEC reduced Isoko North to just ONE constituency.

This reduction is a blatant injustice, particularly for a people who contribute significantly to the national coffers, notably producing the largest volume of onshore crude oil in Nigeria. We demand the immediate restoration of our second State Constituency in Isoko North. This is the INEC and judicial matter that rightfully commands the attention and advocacy of genuine Isoko representatives, not meddling in Warri’s affairs.

Despite our categorical rejection of ISOPLOT’s unauthorized statement and its inflammatory undertones, we recognize that heightened tensions in Warri or anywhere in Delta South have the potential for negative spillover effects. We therefore urge all parties directly involved in the Warri delineation issue – the Ijaw, Itsekiri, Urhobo communities, INEC, and relevant state and federal authorities – to engage in dialogue, exercise maximum restraint, and act with utmost caution.

The paramount objectives must be equity, fairness, inclusion, and the preservation of the hard-won peace and progress of our dear Delta State. We stand against any actions or rhetoric that threaten this stability.

Under Oborevwori’s watch, contractors are not owed, as they are advanced between 30 to 40 percent of project costs as mobilisation funds to ensure timely delivery. It is important to stress that besides such mobilization, the Governor promptly authorizes payment for all genuinely certified work or contractual milestones recorded by contractors.

Additionally, he has invested in judicial reforms with the construction of a modern High Court complex, the provision of vehicles to judicial officers, and housing for judicial staff all of which enhance the independence and efficiency of the justice system.

In furtherance of Enhanced Peace and Security, Oborevwori’s administration has worked to sustain peace in Delta, using dialogue and engagement with youth groups and stakeholders to address restiveness and ensure a stable environment for development. He has deepened dialogue with youth groups and traditional rulers as part of measures to address communal tensions and youth restiveness. The support for Security Agencies through the provision of vehicles, equipment, logistics and improved infrastructure has equally helped to reduce crime and related violence.

Respected leaders such as the late Chief Edwin Clark have praised Governor Oborevwori’s maturity, fiscal integrity, and refusal to play politics with the people’s welfare. He also recently received accolades from the Minister of Works, Engr. Dave Umahi, who toured the Effurun and Warri flyovers and commended him for electing to pay compensation to land and property owners along the right-of-way of the ongoing Sector A2—17.6 km of the Second Niger Bridge Access Road from Issele-Azagba to the Second Niger Bridge.

The respect and trust he commands today are not just because he is governor, but because he has shown that leadership is a call to serve, not to amass debt, build monuments to ego, or politicize development, but to touch lives, restore dignity, and build a legacy of results.

As Governor Oborevwori progressively dive into the last two years of his first term as leader of the oil rich state, am convinced that it is safe to conclude that his administration in two years has been defined by a focus on continuity with innovation, infrastructure expansion, youth and women empowerment, peace and security, and prudent resource management, encapsulated in his “MORE Agenda.” Indeed, these themes have shaped his leadership and policy direction in Delta State

At 62, Sheriff Oborevwori represents the maturity of character, stability of vision, and tenacity of purpose that Delta State needs at this critical point in its development. His journey from the grassroots to the speakership of the State House of Assembly, and now as governor, is a testament to resilience, dedication, and people-centered leadership. As he celebrates another year of life, the people of Delta celebrate a man who gives them not just hope, but proof that government can work, that progress is possible, and that true leadership is still alive in Nigeria.

Navy arrests 3 suspected oil thieves in Delta

Personnel of the Nigeria Navy Ship (NNS) Delta have apprehended three suspected pipeline vandals and recovered six crude-laden boats.

Parading the two suspects and recovered items at the Warri Naval Base on Wednesday, the Commander of NNS Delta, Commodore Abdulazeez Zubairu, said that the suspects were arrested by the Forward Operating Base (FOB) Escravos anti-crude oil theft team.

Zubairu said that the suspected crude oil thieves were arrested at Chevron Nigeria Ltd, Malu Jacket, 19 offshore, Escravos in the Niger Delta creek.

He said that its personnel conducted a sting operation in the early hours of Sunday following credible intelligence.

According to Zubairu, three of the suspects were apprehended at the scene, while others fled in six speedboats powered by 200HP engines and carrying nine drums a piece.

The naval chief said that the modus operandi of the suspects further indicated the involvement of a well-organised and well-resourced syndicate.

“The suspects were attempting to illegally siphon crude oil from the jacket in a highly coordinated operation when our operatives acted swiftly and decisively.

“Our operatives prevented what could have resulted in significant environmental and economic damage.

“The arrested suspects, all of whom hail from Ondo State, are currently in custody and undergoing preliminary investigation.

“Relevant authorities have been duly notified for further joint investigation and prosecution.

“Also, investigations are ongoing to track down the fleeing suspects and dismantle the broader network behind this coordinated illegal activity,” he said.

Zubairu said that the successful operations highlighted the strategic value of collaboration between the Nigerian Navy and stakeholders in the oil sector.

“This arrest underscores the Nigeria Navy’s commitment under the leadership of the Chief of Naval Staff (CNS), Vice Adm. Emmanuel Ogalla’s initiative of ‘Operation Delta Sanity’.

“And other internal security mandates to ensure zero tolerance for oil theft, pipeline vandalism, and all forms of maritime criminality,” he said.

Zubairu said that the arrest would serve as warning to the criminals that the Nigeria Navy remained poised and ever vigilant in protecting Nigeria’s maritime domain and economic resources.

He appreciated the support provided by the public and urged them to always report suspicious activities to the nearest naval or security outpost.
