Real reason Delta PDP leaders agreed to join APC with Oborevwori; VP Shettima to receive Governor into APC on Monday

Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori and major stakeholders of the PDP in Delta on Wednesday formally disclosed moving away from the party to join the All Progressives Congress (APC).

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports the State Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Mr. Charles Aniagwu made the disclosure after a meeting of leaders and stakeholders of the PDP held at the Government House, Asaba.

At the meeting, all stakeholders, leaders and members of the PDP resolved to join Governor Oborevwori to move to the APC and would be received at a rally by Vice President, Kashim Shettima at the Cenotaph, in Asaba, on Monday.

Real reason Delta PDP leaders agreed to join APC with Oborevwori – Charles Aniagwu

Announcing the defection, in a massive political realignment that reverberated across Delta State and beyond, Mr Aniagwu said the decision became necessary following the unfortunate happenings at the national level of the party.

“For quite some time now, the media, particularly the social media, has been awash as to what political decisions we are going to be taking in Delta.

“While that was on, our Governor and the leaders of the party had been very very busy, carrying out necessary consultations.

“It is also part of that consultation that we have caused a meeting to hold here in the Government House, Asaba for the leaders of the PDP to be able to advise as to what necessary steps that needed to be taken.

“It is said that when the taste of the palm wine changes, the drinking pattern also changes,” he said.

Speaking further, Aniagwu said: “The leaders of the party in the course of the consultation were unanimous in their view that the political temperature has changed; the taste of the palm wine in this instance has also changed, and there was a need for us to adjust the drinking pattern.

“In adjusting that drinking pattern, we needed to take a decision that will further help to cement the development in our State, to build the bond of love that has existed in our State, to further advance the course of security and the welfare of our people, and to a very large extent ensure that development in Delta, because every politics is local, is not truncated.

“In taking that decision, we came to the inevitable conclusion that moving out of the PDP is very very necessary for us to be able to collaborate with our kith and kin and build that State every Deltan would be proud of.

“We believe that what is happening and the state of the PDP is akin to that palm wine whose taste has changed, and there was a need for us to change the drinking pattern.

“That is why this decision has been taken unanimously by leaders and stakeholders of the party, and by the grace of God, on Monday, we will be able to make a very big statement as to the fact that we are moving into the APC”.

We disagreed to agree to leave the PDP – Senator James Manager

Also, the pioneer Chairman of the PDP in the State, Senator James Manager, who spoke in a similar vein, said the decision was taken in consultation with various stakeholders across the State.

Senator Manager said: “You have just been told about some of the things that have been happening in the PDP Delta State. Some consultations have been going on and the climax of these consultations is what you are seeing today.

“We have discussed and have disagreed to agree and it is a unanimous agreement. I am the pioneer state chairman of the PDP. But you cannot be in a boat that is already capsizing because I am a riverine man.

“Looking at issues the way they are, we have come to the inevitable conclusion to do something else. It is a collective decision for so many reasons.

“Few days ago, there was a resolution taken by the PDP Governor’s forum at Ibadan. Almost all the Governor’s where there and they resolved that they are not going into coalition with any other party.

“But as disadvantaged as the PDP is now with about 11 Governors, how do you go into a contest with an incumbent president? You think you can win? That particular resolution killed the spirit of so many PDP members.

“We lost election in 2015 as a result of a merger which even included splinter groups from the PDP. There are also other reasons.

“Today Senator Anyanwu is the National Secretary of the party tomorrow is another person. The party must be position to go into an election to win. So you see that it is becoming very funny. The PDP is truly in trouble.

“If you look well, the current PDP state chairman was in the meeting, the governor was there, the Deputy governor, the immediate past governor, the speaker. All of these persons were in the meeting. National Assembly members and even the House of Assembly members. The who is who in Delta State was in the meeting to make this decision.”

With Oborevwori now in APC colours, the South‑South’s political map tightens as the new alignment enhances President Bola Tinubu’s re‑election calculus by adding roughly 1.4 million Delta votes to the ruling party.

In attendance at the meeting were the State Deputy Governor, Sir Monday Onyeme, immediate past Governor of the State and former Vice-Presidential candidate of the party, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, and members of the National Assembly.

Others are Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Guwor, members of the State House of Assembly, Commissioners, Local Government Council Chairmen, top government functionaries, stakeholders, leaders and party officials.

  • Delta governor seeks quick completion of dam

Delta governor seeks quick completion of dam

Gov. Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State has urged the Federal Government to fast-track the Ogwashi-Uku Dam project to realise its economic value for local communities.

He made the appeal during a visit by the Benin-Owena River Basin Authority, led by Managing Director and CEO, Dr Femi Adekanbi, to Government House, Asaba, on Wednesday.

Oborevwori congratulated Adekanbi on his appointment and encouraged him to justify the confidence reposed in him by the President and the Authority’s leadership.

The governor expressed hope that the dam would be completed by October, adding it would help resolve water supply issues in Ogwashi-Uku and 16 nearby communities.

“I urge you to ensure the dam’s completion. Our Agro-Industrial Park in the area depends on it,” he told the Authority’s delegation.

Oborevwori said his administration remained committed to state development and had approved water sanitation departments across all 25 local government areas in Delta.

In response to issues raised by the Authority, he promised to address employment concerns and the water situation affecting Ute-Okpu community.

He reassured the delegation of Delta’s relative peace and ongoing efforts to tackle insecurity across the state.

Delta, he noted, remains one of the most peaceful in the South-South, with several expatriates working there as evidence of security stability.

“Security challenges are not unique to Delta. We’ve made progress, but some achievements are kept off the media to protect investigations,” he added.

Oborevwori thanked the Authority for presenting locally produced garri and urged expansion of production, especially for rural areas.

“We will support you because your success is our success,” the governor affirmed.

Earlier, Adekanbi commended the governor for infrastructure progress across the state and pledged support in tackling food insecurity.

“Our aim is to partner Delta to address food crises across Delta, Ondo, Edo, and Ekiti,” Adekanbi said.

He said the Authority is prioritising commercial rice production and has partnered with the NDE to train youths as agricultural entrepreneurs.

Adekanbi clarified that the Ogwashi-Uku dam structure is complete, but water reticulation is still pending final works.

“Once finished, the dam will supply water to Aniocha South, Aniocha North, Oshimili North, and Oshimili South,” he said.

He also praised the governor’s efforts in promoting youth empowerment and agricultural development across Delta State.
