  • Gov. Okowa swears in council chairmen, harps on punctuality

Gov. Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta on Friday told the newly elected chairmen of the 25 local government areas that he would not tolerate absenteeism from work.

The governor gave the warning at the swearing-in ceremony of the chairmen in Asaba.

He said the development of local government areas was of great concern to his administration.

“There is a lot of work to be done in our local council areas because we are in a very hard times.

“Though we agree that things are improving, but there is still a lot to be done to take us to where we should be.

“So, to that extent, the new chairmen and all those who are going to work with them should realise that it is not going to be all rosy.

“As you resume duty, you definitely have to work with the staff and management of the local councils in the interest of the people,” Okowa said.

He also reminded the new chairmen that priority attention should be given to payment of salaries and the security in their respective local government areas.

Okowa said: “Let me remind our new chairmen and all those who are going to work with them that security of lives and property are paramount to this administration.

“So, I want to urge you and charge you that you take matters of security in your council areas seriously.

“I also expect that council chairmen, vice chairmen and councilors would return to the local government areas where they preside over.

“I would not want to have absentee council chairmen, vice chairmen or councillors in any local government in the state.”

TheNewsGuru reports that 23 chairmen out of the 25 chairmen were elected on Jan. 6 while the election of the remaining two held on Jan. 9 due to violence.

  • Delta Govt. to commence more flood control projects in Asaba

The Delta Government says it is to embark on more storm water control projects in order to check incessant flooding in Asaba, the state capital.

The state Commissioner for Works, Chief James Augoye, disclosed this at a meeting with engineers of the ministry in the 25 local government areas of the state on Thursday in Asaba.

Augoye said that the construction sites of the storm water control projects would be located in Ralph Uwechue and DBS Roads in Asaba.

He said that the water control projects in Uwechue and DBS roads would help to discharge rain storm water into the Anwai and Ailimocha Rivers respectively.

He directed all contractors handing road projects in the state to go back to site before Monday next week, adding that time was of essence to the state government.

The commissioner expressed displeasure over the attitude of some contractor who had refused to go back to their projects in spite of the payments made to them last December.

Augoye advised the government contractors to make judicious use of the dry season, saying that rains would likely set in early this year as forecasted.

He urged the engineers to do more by supervising the contractors closely to ensure that the jobs were done according to specifications.

He also told the engineers not to hesitate to report any contractor who flaunted the directives.

According to him, 2018 is a critical year to the state government because it precedes the 2019 election.

“The state government will not leave any stone unturned to ensure that all ongoing projects are completed within the next dry season,’’ he said.

Responding on behalf of the engineers, Mr. Eric Chuhwu, pledged their support to the actualisation of the programmes of the Gov. Ifeanyi Okowa-led administration.

  • Community to FG: We will all die if this pending gas explosion should happen

Ugbokodo, an Okpe community in Delta state, has raised alarm of a pending gas explosion and appealed to the President Muhammadu Buhari-led federal and Governor Ifeanyi Okowa-led state governments to intervene to avoid the loss of lives and properties.

Sealight Ogholemu, an Ugbokodo community leader, in an interview with TheNewsGuru, raised the alarm after a gas pipeline exploded this morning at the Ugbokodo Gas Riser/Manifold, owned and operated by the Nigerian Gas Company (NGC).

Eyewitnesses told TheNewsGuru that the explosion occurred in the river that runs through Ubeji, Egbokodo, Ugbokodo, Jeddo, Ughoton and Omadino communities, and where the Ugbokodo Gas Riser/Manifold is situated.

“This happened due to leakage that happened for some time now. NGC promised to work on it on the 8th of January, but they failed. Even, yesterday we were expecting them; still, they failed.

“There is another leakage now. If this one explodes, everybody will die because this one is on the land. The people of Ugbokodo, Jeddo, Ughoton, Ubeji, Ajantitor, Ifie, etc, are not safe,” Ogholemu said, attributing the occurrence to negligence by the NGC.

The deafening sound of the explosion and the massive fire that followed was first heard and seen at about 4:30 am. The fierce and raging fire caused panic among residents in the communities.

This “has led to heavy damage in the river and land; a lot of people running for their lives. Mothers looking for their children, crying, and it is like the end time trumpet,” Ogholemu lamented.

Agbi Eguriase Andrew said the fire and the deafening noise had since subsided hopefully after gas supply to the line was cut off.

Ogholemu pleaded with the management of the NGC and the federal and state governments to intervene to avoid a pending explosion.

  • ‘I am now ready to remain in Nigeria to start frying Akara’ – Libyan returnee

A Libyan returnee presently undergoing rehabilitation in Delta state has said he willing now willing and ready to remain in Nigeria after all the ‘awful and animalistic’ he passed through trying to cross into Europe.

Okafor Abraham, who hails from Umunede in Ika North-East, said he joined the movement to Libya in November 2016 having paid N150,000.00.

He described his ordeal in the drylands of Kano to Niger republic to Agades and Libya as ‘awful and animalistic,’ and said himself and others in the journey to Europe were fed with addictive foods in Libyan prisons.

“I am now ready to remain in Nigeria to start frying Akara. Government should give us the capital to start up something. If that fails, I will go into agriculture or catering business. My experience was awful,” Okafor said.

Meanwhile, special adviser on international affairs, Dr. Genevieve Modi, who received the returnees, said State Governor Ifeanyi Okowa has given directive for the immediate rehabilitation of the returnees.

The State commissioner for economic planning, Kingsley Emu, during an extraordinary session with the returnees in Asaba, lamented that the youth chairman of his council area in Ika North-East, Chuks Odiase, was among them after the state government spent more than N2 million to train him under the state’s youth empowerment programme.

Okafor and Chuks are among the 5,500 people rescued by a high-powered delegation led by the Minister of Internal Affairs, Abdulrahman Dambazau, under the auspices of the European Union (EU) in conjunction with the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP).

  • Gov. Okowa grants 78 Libyan returnees automatic job placement

The Governor of Delta State, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, has absorbed at least 78 Libyan returnees, who are indigenes of state, into the state’s job and wealth creation skill acquisition and empowerment programme.

The returnees, who were between the ages of 18 and 28, described their ordeal in the drylands of Kano to Niger republic to Agades and Libya as ‘awful and animalistic.’

Special adviser to the Governor on International Affairs, Dr. Genevieve Modi, who received them, said Gov. Okowa had given a directive for immediate rehabilitation of the returnees.

TheNewsGuru reports the returnees were among the 5,500 people rescued by a high-powered delegation led by the Minister of Internal Affairs, Abdulrahman Dambazau, under the auspices of the European Union (EU) in conjunction with the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP).

“Governor Okowa provided the transit, food and other logistics in addition to what the federal government made available and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) provided.

“The state is going to absorb them in batches. They will fill the job creation forms before we can rehabilitate them,” Modi said.

  • Delta to rehabilitate 78 returnees from Libya

Delta to rehabilitate 78 returnees from Libya

The Delta Government said on Tuesday that it was committed to rehabilitating the 78 returnees from Libya who are from the state.

The state Commissioner for Special Duties, Mr Ernest Ogwezzy, said this during an interview with newsmen in Asaba.

Ogwezzy said that the returnees arrived the state on Saturday and that the state government had been taking care of them since then.

He said that the returnees had learnt from their experiences and urged them to put those experiences behind them and looked forward to a new lease of life.

He said that details of the returnees had been collected and that the government would enrol them in its various skills’ acquisition programmes.

One of the returnees, Child Odiase said that he went to Libya in search of greener pasture with the intention to cross to Europe but was arrested in the process.

Odiase said that many Nigerians had died in the process, while many others were in prison.

He said that whenever the Nigerian Ambassador to Libya came round to see them, the Libyans would lock them up so that the envoy would not see them.

He said that if you were brought before the Ambassador and you talked that others were being locked up, your punishment would increase after he must have left.

He thanked the government for coming to their rescue and prayed that others still in various detentions in Libya would return to Nigeria safely.

Another returnee, Chico Frankson said that he was taken to several prisons before he was brought back home.

He said that they were usually served with foods drugged and were being subjected to manual labour by the Libyans.

  • Council polls: We won fair, square across Delta state – PDP

The Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) said it won the January 6, 2018 Delta state local government elections fair and square, and described issues raise by the All Progressives Congress (APC) as “utterly nonsensical rantings”.

The PDP in a statement signed by the State Publicity Secretary, Ifeanyi Michael Osuoza, said, took the issues raised by the APC with a huge sense of amusement, while stressing that claims are spurious and unfounded.

“We have read with a huge sense of amusement, the spurious, unfounded and even in some reports, utterly nonsensical rantings of some identified chieftains of the All Progressives Congress, APC over the January 6, 2018 Delta State Local Government elections.

“To us, these comments are nothing more than the typical whining and bellyaching always expected from sore losers, as a diversionary ploy and smokescreen to cover up their obviously pathetic lack of preparation for the Delta Council polls.

“We are extremely disappointed but not particularly surprised with the comments of Olorogun O’tega Emerhor, Delta APC leader and former governorship candidate, made from the cozy comforts and surrounding of his country home, who like an old broken record, replaying with annoying repetition, called for the cancellation of the Delta State Local Government election, on outdated and less edifying excuses and allegations, unbecoming of a politician of his status and arguably still nurturing experience,” the statement read.

The statement further went to read thus:

“Even more ridiculous were the excuses given by Dr. Cairo Ojougboh, the self acclaimed new Media Director of the APC who, not knowing who else to blame for his colossal failure in his constituency, accused a major GSM Service Provider of colluding with the PDP, by ‘deliberately jamming the network’ to prevent people from making calls, when they were supposed to be lining up for accreditation and voting. What a hogwash indeed.

“But more farcical are the allegations made by the APC chairman in Ughelli North, Olorogun Felix Ekure and the APC chairmanship candidate in Uvwie, Engr. Ufoma Okenini who claimed amongst other brazen falsehoods that, “the APC in Delta State and Ughelli North in particular decided to prepare for and participate in the election….We campaigned throughout the nooks and crannies of the entire LGA and our supporters were fully mobilized and ready for the election. We were determined to send a clear signal to the PDP that they have no place in Ughelli North…

“Sadly, despite the apparent falsehood, they did not even campaign at all, except for some noisy social media propaganda, their ‘determination to send a clear signal to the PDP’, was to manifest in what we have now come to realize was the deliberate perpetration of arson, by burning down the DSIEC office in the LGA and destroying DSIEC properties, with the heinous intent to cripple the electoral process and deny the good people of Ughelli North from exercising their franchise as enshrined in the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and electing their Chairman and Councillors at the grassroots administrative level, when they realized that the PDP was set to sweep the stakes in Ughelli North, in a free and fair election.

“We want to place on record as unequivocally stated by the undisputed leader of our Delta PDP, His Excellency, Senator Dr. Ifeanyi Arthur Okowa, who stated categorically, that, “It is unfortunate that some persons were not ready for the elections and they resorted to violence. I personally led the campaign of the PDP round the 25 local government areas of the State, even to areas I did not visit when I was campaigning for the governorship position and after that, the campaign from Ward to Ward, house to house continued while other political parties were not involved in any campaign.

“We also want to State emphatically that as a responsible political party, the PDP in Delta State is very satisfied with the process of the Local Government Election. Delta State Independent Electoral Commission (DSIEC) gave us the assurance that the election will be credible, free and fair and that was what happened in majority of the areas where the people insisted on exercising their franchise and free-will, by coming out to cast their votes.

“The voting pattern adopted by DSIEC was such that once you are accredited, you cast your vote and you go for your business, unlike in the past when accreditation commenced at 8am and ended at 12 noon, before actual voting will start. With this process, accreditation and voting continued all day and everybody who was accredited voted, no matter how late it was, in all the polling units across the State.

“We have no doubts whatsoever that this is one of the best organised elections by the DSIEC, taking into cognizance, the fact that the recently elected Board of the electoral umpire had to accommodate so much at such short notice. The election was transparent and people were happy to come out and vote without fear and with confidence that their votes will count.

“Let us also use this medium to express our heartfelt sympathy and deep condolences to DSIEC over the death of their ad-hoc staff, who sadly slumped and passed away just as the process was about to commence in Onicha-Ugbo, Aniocha North LGA. May his gentle soul rest in peace and may God Almighty give his family the strength and fortitude to bear this irreplaceable loss.

“We heartily congratulate all our victorious candidates and urge all Deltans to disregard the vituperations of the APC, even as we promise Deltans that the SMART Agenda of His Excellency, Senator, Dr. Ifeanyi Arthur Okowa is still on course and will continue to deliver more dividends of democracy now, with the emergence of Local Government Administration in Delta State”.

DSIEC chairman Barr. Mike Ogbodu on Sunday said the Ughelli North and Ethiope East elections will now hold Tuesday 9th January 2018.

Meanwhile, DSIEC has announced results of the council elections that held in the state yesterday with the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) clearing all the LGAs announced so far.

The DSIEC chairman noted that the result for Ika South could not be declared due to the absence of the returning officer, whom he said was indisposed.
