The Nigerian Police, Delta State command has condemned some officers of the Airforce who attacked its officers after they had arrested a drug trafficker at the  Air Force Base in Jeddo, Okpe Local Government Area (LGA) of the state.

The state’s police spokesperson, Superintendent (SP) Bright Edafe, on Wednesday, February 12, released a statement  following a brawl between some police officers and some officers of the Nigerian Airforce.

He noted that the police officers were attacked by the Airforce personnel while they were carrying out their official duties.

The statement read, “On 11/2/2025, at about 1700 hours, operatives of Quick Response Squad (QRS) while on crime prevention patrol flagged down a Toyota Corolla car with reg. no. AKD-73-FL, but the occupants of the vehicle on sighting the police took to their heels which prompted the policemen to go after them, and arrested one of the suspects identified as Ibohama Precious aged 25yrs and recovered some weed suspected to be Indian hemp, Canadian loud and other hard drugs.

“While the Policemen were on their way to the station alongside the suspect and exhibit, upon getting to the Airforce checkpoint at Jeddo, they were stopped by the Airforce personnel and were told that they wouldn’t be allowed to proceed until they released the suspects they were carrying which the policemen vehemently resisted and subsequently, the Airforce personnel attacked the Policemen without justification.”

Edafe stated that under the leadership of the state’s Commissioner of Police (CP) Olufemi Abaniwonda, the Delta State Police Command enjoys a strong and cooperative relationship with the Nigerian Air Force, Navy, Army and other security agencies in the state, which serves as a model for collaboration.

  • We are not afraid of defectors – Delta PDP Chairman

We are not afraid of defectors – Delta PDP Chairman

Chief Solomon Arenyeka, Chairman, People Democratic Party (PDP), Delta State Chapter on Wednesday, said the party is not afraid of defectors, but founding members play politics of ideology.

Arenyeka stated this when the executives and some members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Asaba Correspondents Chapel, paid him a courtesy visit at the PDP Secretariat, Asaba.

According to him, as the state party chairman, all machineries have been put in place to take care of defectors out of and into the PDP.

“As a party, we are not too bothered but we will do all that is necessary to ensure that the party retains its pride of place in the state, because as people are leaving, more are coming into the party,” he said.

Arenyeka said those who remained in PDP these years in spite of all odds, played politics of ideology and development which is evident in the almost two years of the Gov. Sheriff Oborevwori led administration.

He, however, said that it was not time for politics as the governor was concentrating on governance, adding that when the time for politics comes, its doors would be open and logistics provided to meet the exigencies.

The Delta PDP chairman queried why anyone could abandoned a house he or she had built for many years.

“Defection started long ago but the unique thing is that the party they had defected to, particularly the All Progressives Congress (APC), majority of the members were from the PDP.

“Let me put it on record that there is no party without crisis because politics is of interest; interest for services, some genuine while some are not genuine.

“We have seen defections in the party, but I make bold to say that as a party in this state, we are not afraid of defections,” he said.

The chairman said that these defectors today occupy certain positions in their new parties.

“But what they could not do right when they were in the PDP many years, I do not see what they have to tell the people of Delta that they want to do right between now and 2027.

    “We who are the stronger and founding members of the PDP and with the genuine interest of the party since its formation in the state since 1999;

“We will remain to salvage whatever that is remaining in the party to ensure that in 2027, PDP will still maintain its lead in Delta state,” he maintained.

He commended the media as partners in development and nation building, adding that no organisation, party or government could succeed without the media.

The chairman said, ” there is no way a party or government can function effectively without the press. As the fourth estate of the realm, the press is partner in progress.

“I want to promise you that my administration as the party chairman, we will always close all gaps between the party and the media.”

Earlier, the Chairman, Asaba Correspondents Chapel, Mr Ifeanyi Olannye urged the PDP Chairman to keep an open door policy to enable journalists have access to information without hitches.

He said, ” As partners, we expect you to work closely with us to ensure a seamless communication flow in order to avoid misrepresentation in line with our mandate of balancing reports before going to press.

“While congratulating you on your well deserved appointment, this visit is to deepen our partnership with the party as gate keepers and the fourth estate of the realm.

    “With the wind of defections here and there and given the claims for the drifts, we are mindful of the task ahead to keep pace with development trajectory;

“Particularly on your efforts to maintain and sustain the party structure and to wield members together ahead of 2027 in line with the Gov. Sheriff Oborevwori philosophy of M.O.R.E. Agenda,” Olannye said.

The Majority Leader of the House, Mr Emeka Nwaobi said this in Asaba, while reacting to the allegation that 10 out of the 22 members of the assembly were planning on joining the APC.

Nwaobi said that all the 22 PDP members in the House were irrevocably committed to the thrust of the party, and their loyalty to the PDP unquestionable.

He, however, disclosed that five out of the seven APC members in the assembly were already indicating interest to join the PDP, adding that their defection plan was already in the pipeline.

Similarly, the Speaker, Mr Dennis Guwor, advised residents of the state, particularly PDP faithful, to discountenance such allegation.

According to him, members of the party are solidly loyal to the party’s idea in the House.

”There is no doubt that the 22 members of the PDP in the state house of assembly are intact. There is no indication anywhere that any member of the party is planning to join any other party.

“Rather, there is strong indication that no fewer than five out of the seven members of the APC in the House are already warming up to join the PDP.

“So let me use this forum to inform them that the umbrella is wide enough to accommodate as many that are interested in joining us,”  he said.

  • Oborevwori committed to functional, quality education in Delta – Aniagwu

Oborevwori committed to functional, quality education in Delta – Aniagwu

Delta State Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Mr Charles Aniagwu, has reaffirmed Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s dedication to providing functional and high-quality education across the state.

Aniagwu who emphasized the importance of equipping students with the skills and knowledge needed for a competitive future, disclosed this on a national television programme monitored in Asaba, the state capital at the weekend.

The Commissioner who was reacting to questions regarding the challenges of proceeding with construction on the abandoned Sapele Polytechnic at Deghele-Iriabome communities, Elume District in Sapele LGA, assured of Governor Oborevwori’s continued investment in the education sector.

According to him, there is the need to understand the issue of functionality, education is not like opening a biscuit shop were everybody can come and buy biscuits.

“There is a reason for establishing institutions and i told you that we needed to look at the issues of quality and functionality as part of the aftermath of the 2016 education summit organized by the state government”.

“We had education summit in 2016 and we brought in professionals from across the country to assist us on a need assessment in the education sector and to make sure that our students do not remain in school more than necessary due to strikes”.

“The main goal of that summit was to ensure that our students get the kind of quality education that can position them to compete globally. Our education philosophy is to have accessible and functional institutions and not just to establish higher institutions that could make us to be seen to be politically correct”.

“Prior to the establishment of three new universities by the Ifeanyi Okowa led administration, we had three Polytechnics in Ogwashi-Uku, Ozoro and Otefe-Oghara. These polytechnics were established in the three Senatorial districts and that is in addition to three colleges of education in the three Senatorial districts.

“We had the main campus of the Delta State University in Central Senatorial District with other campuses in the South and the North”.

“So what we did as a government is to continue in the assessment of what we need, not to play politics. If you go and establish three polytechnics and you have 300 hundred students in one and possibly 500 lecturers and at the end of the day it becomes mushroom, how have you helped the state with that?

The Commissioner said the new universities were established based on a feasibility study which indicated the trend students were gravitating to.

“When we examined the trend we saw that many persons want to navigate towards University education and the University we had did not have enough carrying capacity.

“It was on the basis of that we established three additional universities with the Polytechnic at Ozoro converted to Delta State University of Science and Technology and later Southern Delta University, the campus at Asaba became Dennis Osadebay University and the College of Education at Agbor converted to University of Delta.

“In Nigeria today, no state can boost of the number of state owned higher institutions that we have to the extent that out of our ten federal constituencies, nine have higher institutions.

“In the last nine and half years, no higher institution in Delta has embarked on any strike. All the strikes you have seen across the federation our schools don’t join.

“They don’t join because we try to meet up with those demands to ensure functionality of our institutions. We don’t just say go and put a polytechnic or a university somewhere without having a feasibility study.

“It was a feasibility study that revealed university education had become much more attractive to our people and that was why we went that way.

“We have not jettisoned the establishment of more institutions but we needed to move steadily such that we do not bite more than we can chew per time.”

Speaking further, Aniagwu said a campus of the Southern Delta University was established at Orerokpe in the same federal constituency with Sapele and using facilities from the Technical College being constructed by the State Government.

“Governor Oborevwori has been running fast and steadily on the lane of functional and efficient education system that caters to the needs of the present and future”.

“As an administration, we do not have intention to abolish any institution so established but we will remain unwavering in our efforts at proceeding with educational needs assessment”

He said the Oborevwori administration would continue to promote the trajectory of quality and functional education for Deltans in line with the administration’s MORE Agenda.

Governor’s Diary: Oborevwori working to protect interest of Deltans – By Festus Ahon

    By Festus Ahon

The primary responsibility of every elected or appointed public official is to serve the collective interests of the people. In a developing country like Nigeria, where infrastructural deficits pose significant challenges, governments at all levels must prioritize substantial investments in critical sectors.

Since assuming office on May 29, 2023, Delta State Governor Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori has demonstrated unwavering dedication to the welfare of Deltans, through his MORE agenda –Meaningful development, Opportunities for all, Realistic reforms, and Enhanced peace and security— he continues to drive impactful governance.

His administration’s key initiatives include: Infrastructure Development: Construction of roads, bridges, and urban renewal projects; Education and Healthcare; Investments in schools, hospitals, and social welfare programmes; Economic Growth: Support for businesses, agriculture, and job creation; and Security and Peacebuilding: Strengthening security measures to ensure a safer environment for residents.

Speaking while hosting members of the newly elected executive of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN), Delta State Chapter, led by Bishop Abos Willie, at Government House, Asaba, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori urged elected and appointed public office holders in the state to prioritize the interests of the people above personal gains in the discharge of their duties. The governor attributed the tendency of some public officials to place themselves above the collective good to a lack of reverence for God.

Reflecting on his administration’s achievements over the past 19 months, he credited divine guidance and God’s providence for the progress made so far. He reaffirmed his commitment to putting God first in the governance of Delta State.

He congratulated members of the new PFN executive in the state on their successful election, even as he promised to synergise with them in advancing the MORE Agenda of his administration.

…Tasks Political Appointees On Whistle Blowing Policy

Governor Oborevwori gave the charge, Wednesday, while swearing-in Senator Ighoyota Amori as his Chief Adviser at the Unity Hall, Government House, Asaba. “Last week, during an interactive session with the top level public/civil servants, I announced my intention to open a hotline for residents to report cases of sub-standard jobs by contractors, to my office.

“This is an initiative that will assist the government to ensure that the government gets full value for the money spent on projects. Political appointees must take the lead in this by monitoring projects in their localities and advise the government accordingly.

“Governance is all about teamwork and all hands must be on deck to achieve our goal of giving our people the best and making Delta State the envy of other states in the federation,” he said.

The Governor noted that the state was blessed with abundant crude oil and gas deposits, and assured that there would be high returns on investments in the state. He said: “Delta State is a peaceful place and it is one of the places in Nigeria that produces the crude oil that serves this nation. And we are open to business because it’s a place that is very peaceful.

“It will interest you to know that, in Delta State, we have three airports; the Asaba International Cargo Airport, the Osubi/Warri airport and the Escravos airport which serves the coastal oil terminal.

“Your visit today will also consolidate our relationship with the Swedish government. I am also aware that since 1961, Nigeria has had a relationship with the Swedish government.”

Earlier, the Swedish Ambassador to Nigeria, Annika Hahn-Englund, congratulated Governor Oborevwori on his award of Governor of The Year by ThisDay Newspaper and Arise Television, adding that she had been longing to visit Delta. Hahn-Englund said Sweden and Nigeria have diplomatic relations dating back to 1961, adding that her visit was to promote trade and investment.

Oborevwori tasks public officers on selflessness

Gov. Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta on Wednesday, charged public office holders in the state to put the interest of the people above self in the discharge of their duties.

The governor gave the charge when  the new executive of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN), State Chapter, led by Bishop Abos Willie, called on him at Government House, Asaba.

He said it was the lack of fear of God that made some public office holders to put themselves above the collective interest of the people.

Oborevwori attributed the successes so far recorded by his administration in the last 19 months to divine directive and God’s providence and pledged to continue to put God first in the governance of the state.

He congratulated members of the new PFN executive in the state on their successful election and promised to synergies with them in advancing the M.O.R.E Agenda of his administration.

“First, let me congratulate the new executive members of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN), Delta state Chapter.

“As an administration, we are grateful to God for the successes that we have recorded so far.

“It is by divine wisdom that we have been able to judiciously allocate resources that meet competing needs and made the right choices and decisions.

“As a government, we are determined to continue to trust God for wisdom, guidance and direction to successfully execute the programmes that we have outlined under the M.O.R.E Agenda.

“I know that, in partnership with the Christian body, we will succeed because, as an Elder in the Living Faith Church, we put God first in everything that we do.

“We are elected or appointed to serve interest of the people and not for our personal interest; as such, the interest of the people should come first.

“By the time you put the interest of the people first, you will succeed but when you put your personal interest first, you will fail,” he said.

He said his administration was committed to doing those things that would positively impact on the lives of the people at the grassroot.

“l want to assure you that, as a government, we will continue to partner with relevant stakeholders in order to move the state forward,” Oborevwori said.

He implored the PFN and the church to continue to pray for the state and the nation, affirming that God was needed to reverse the ugly trend in the country.

Earlier, the State PFN Chairman, Bishop Abos Willie, said the visit was not only to introduce the new executive to the governor but to also congratulate him on his giant strides and recognition by the ThisDay Newspaper and Arise Television as the Governor -of -The -Year.

Willie reminded the governor of the need to sustain zero tolerance for shoddy projects, stressing that the bold step would stamp out the syndrome of abandonment of projects in the state.

He outlined the programmes of his administration to include the value of the Holy Bible, religious harmony, integrity in Christianity and value of being born again.

He, however, urges the state government  support in achieving the set goals.

  • How did Oborevwori hinder you as a Federal Legislator? – Group queries Nwoko

How did Oborevwori hinder you as a Federal Legislator? – Group queries Nwoko

The Anioma United Front, AUF has taken Senator Ned Nwoko to task over his claim that Governor Sherif Oborevwori hindered him from his legislative goals.

The group in a statement issued on Tuesday, February 4, 2025 cautioned the lawmaker against igniting animosity between the people of Delta North and other senatorial zones with what it described as his defenceless abandonment of his mandate gifted him by his constituency.

It would be recalled that Senator Nwoko in explaining his reason to defect from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP to the All Progressives Congress, APC alleged that Governor refused to back his quest to create Anioma State and also his funding plans for the Federal Government sponsored Okpai Power plant.

Countering him, the AUF in a statement issued by its spokesman, Onye Nkem queried the rationality of his claims noting that Senator Nwoko had failed as a federal legislator in trying to force the State Government into pushing legislative agenda that were essentially federal.

“We have waited for long to see how Senator Ned Nwoko would rationalise his defection and were not surprised by his projection of wholly irrational arguments.

“We at AUF like the majority of Ndi Anioma have repeatedly said it that we have no hand in Nwoko’s pet project of turning our state into an Igbo State. He is on his own in the fancy political project. We are shocked that at a time that several of his colleagues are drawing billions of naira of federal government projects that Nwoko’s dream has remained his propaganda scheme of Anioma as the sixth Igbo State.

“Even more ludicrous is that while his fellow senators are drawing money from Abuja to their states that he wants our governor, HE Sherif Oborevwori to plough from the state budget to fund a federal government project. This is a shock to us.” conc

“Now that he is gone, we again ask him to put his mandate on the line and re-contest his seat projecting his fanciful ideas.”

Concluding, the group tasked the people of Delta North to sustain their support for their elective representatives and not cry over spilled milk as concerning the defection of Nwoko.p
