    Sad! Generator fumes kill three Delta kids, carpenter falls, dies

    Three siblings have died after inhaling generator fumes in Emevor community, in the Isoko North Local Government Area of Delta State.

     

    The children and their parents were said to have gone to bed with their generator on.

     

     

    The generator was said to be close to the children’s room.

     

    Sadly, their mother woke up in the morning to find the lifeless bodies of the kids.

     

    In another occurence, a 35-year-old carpenter was reported dead in Oleh, Isoko South LGA, after falling from the roof of a storey building under construction in the community.

    Respite for Nigeria as Covid-19 cases reduce in Abuja, Delta, others

    The Federal Capital City and Delta State were among the few states that recorded a decrease in its Coronavirus cases, as the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control, NCDC, announced 463 new cases.

    The country’s infectious disease outfit, NCDC, reported 463 confirmed infections on Tuesday being the first time in the last four days that infections fell below 500 in Nigeria.

    The new figure shows a significant decrease from the 595 infections released on Monday.

    In the figures released by the NCDC, on Tuesday night, Lagos rakes in 128 new cases, though it was lesser than the 156 cases it recorded on Monday. With the new figures, Lagos’ total coronavirus infections stand at 12, 711.

    Kwara recorded a spike in infection, as it ramps up 92 fresh cases.

    Others are Enugu-39, Delta-33, Edo-29, Plateau-28, Kaduna-23, Oyo-15, Ogun-14, Osun-14, FCT-12, Ondo-9, Rivers-9, Abia-8, Bayelsa-5, Ekiti-3, and Borno-2.

    Also, 13,792 people have recovered from the virus and discharged nationwide.

  • Warri master drainage project on track, says Macaulay

    The Director General, Warri/Uvwie and Environs Special Area Development Agency (WUEDA), Comrade Ovuozourie Macaulay has affirmed that the master drainage project for the axis was going on as scheduled.

    Macaulay, a former Secretary to the Delta State Government (SSG) who fielded questions from journalists in Warri, after a visit to the project sites said that the work done so far was encouraging.

    The project sites visited include Ugbolokposo, Alegbo, Uti, Apala, NPA Expressway and Edjeba in Warri South and Uvwie Local Government Areas where he expressed satisfaction and commended the contractors – Levant Construction Limited and CCECC for their efforts in spite the rains and the Covid-19 induced lockdown.

    “When you go round the area where these jobs are going on now, you will see the excitement in the faces of the people. For once we are not having any problem with the Communities because they are happy, they see the job as their own. Nobody is really disturbing the job we are doing today.

    “The areas worked are no longer suffering the flooding issue. The communities are happy because most of them are already benefiting from it,” he stated.

    According to him, phases one and two are billed to be completed between 18 and 24 months, adding that there is hope for the people of Warri/Uvwie axis that in the next three to five years they may not be talking of flood.

    He maintained that this is the first time the State Government has taken deliberate measures to tackle the issue of flooding in the area and commended Governor Ifeanyi Okowa for his commitment to solving this challenge of the people.

    However, Macaulay disclosed that those whose buildings and structures are located on the waterways have been notified, and that towards the end of August, the Agency will commence the removal of such illegal structures.

    Also speaking, the Programme Manager, Levant Construction Limited, Engr. Ghassan Fadel hinted that they would soon stop major works due to the heavy downpour, stressing that the swampy nature of the area aggravated by the heavy rains have been a hindrance to their speed and set target.

    There was pandemonium in Ughelli North Local Government Area, one of the coronavirus [COVID-19] ravaged LGAs in Delta State on Monday after COVID-19 task force team and some police officials were allegedly attacked by suspected youths from Otor-Ihwreko the host community to Ughelli main market in the local government area.

    TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports that Ughelli North is one of the six LGAs identified as COVID-19 hotbeds in Delta. Others and their confirmed COVID-19 cases are; Oshimili South which comprises Asaba, Okwe and Oko area with 351 cases, Warri South has 161 cases, Uwvie has 145, Ughelli North has 122, Oshimili North 107 while Sapele has 100 cases in the state.

    According to reports, the hoodlums in their hundreds attacked the policemen and officials of COVID-19 task force while carrying out sensitization campaign on the uses of nose masks, hand sanitizers and social distancing precautions at recommended by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) to the market women.

    Eyewitness account said the youths emerged from the community’s shrine on sighting the officials of the COVID-19 task force and policemen from ‘A’ Division, Ughelli with dangerous weapons and heavily attacked the policemen and officials of COVID-19 Task Force of the council area.

    Two women sergeant from ‘A’ Division Ughelli were beaten to stupor and their uniforms were torn and half naked while alighting from the council’s NUGLE bus.

    The officials of the task force were not spared as many of them were left with various degree of injuries in their bodies.

    According to an eyewitness, an attempt to set the council bus ablaze was averted as the DPO ‘A’ Division, Ughelli, CSP Kevin Zuokumor sent police officers to rescue the police officers and officials of COVID-19 task force locked up in the market stalls.

    The youths in their warring song said the community will no longer fold their hands looking at government of Delta State killing their people with hunger, any attempt by the state government or anybody to impose stringent condition on their people will be resisted.

    “From henceforth, any attempt by Delta state government to further impose stringent conditions on our people will be highly resisted by superior power”.

    When contacted, the council boss, Hon. Goodwin Adode condemned the attack on the officials of the council and Nigeria policemen from ‘A’ Division Ughelli who are carrying out their lawful duty.

    Adode vowed that the perpetrators will not go unpunished adding that they will be arrested and made to face the law.

    “We will not condone it from anybody, the youths of Otor-Ihwreko that attacked policemen and officials of COVID-19 task force will face the law and brought to book” he threatened.

    Two morgue attendants, five nurses test positive for COVID-19 in Delta

    Five nurses and two mortuary attendants have tested positive for COVID-19 in Delta state, Sapele council boss, Eugene Inoaghan, has said.

    According to Inoaghan the five nurses are workers at a private clinic in Ugbeyiyi area in Sapele sealed two weeks earlier by the Delta State Ministry of Health monitoring team.

    According to reports the clinic was sealed following the death of a popular pastor who died of COVID-19 while being secretly treated at the clinic.

    It was learnt that the two morgue attendants are attached to Sapele Central Hospital.

    Inoaghan who spoke to reporters weekend said the seven patients are currently undergoing treatment at Delta State Teaching Hospital Oghara.

    He said, “The five nurses and two morgue attendants, as I speak to you, have been admitted at the treatment centre but we have started contact tracing already and we will do everything to stop the spread of the virus. I want to appeal to Sapele residents that the illness is real.We should remember to observe all protocols as prescribed by the health authorities.”

    A woman has slumped and died in Ughelli, Delta State, on hearing that her husband tested positive for COVID-19.

    The tragedy, which happened at Igho Salami Street, Uloho Avenue in Ughelli, has since thrown the entire neighbourhood into mourning.

    It was gathered that the deceased, Mrs Oregbe, was at home on Monday when the news of her husband’s sample result came out that he had tested positive for COVID-19.

    Mrs. Oregbe, sources said, had been managing high blood pressure prior to the incident.

    It was learnt that as soon as she was informed that her husband tested positive, she slumped and died before they could rush her to the hospital.

    “I’m sure she has been managing high blood pressure before now,” a source claimed.

    When journalists visited the home of the Oregbes in Ughelli on Wednesday, mourners were seen discussing the sad incident in hushed tones.

    Nigeria on Wednesday, set a new record after it announced that the country has recorded 790 new cases of Coronavirus (COVID-19), bringing the total number of infections in Nigeria to 26,484.

    The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) announced this on Twitter, saying the new cases were reported in 22 states, with four deaths.

    The new cases make up for the highest single-day tally for COVID-19 infections in the country.

    Delta State with 166 dethroned Lagos which reported 120 new infections.

    Others are Enugu-66 FCT-65 Edo-60 Ogun-43 Kano-41 Kaduna-39 Ondo-33 Rivers-32 Bayelsa-29 Katsina-21 Imo-20 Kwara-18 Oyo-11 Abia-10 Benue-6 Gombe-4 Yobe-2 Bauchi-2 Kebbi-2.

    JUST IN: Delta loses another prominent daughter of the soil

    A member of the Delta State Local Government Service Commission, Hon. (Mrs.) Catherine Ilolo, has died.

    The former lawmaker reportedly passed on Monday night, at an undisclosed hospital in Oleh, Isoko South council area of the state.

    She was 60 years old and a native of Oleh community.

    Circumstances surrounding her death were not clear as of the time of filing this report, but sources claim that she had complained of some sort of discomfort in her body over the weekend.

    “She returned from Asaba and had gone to the hospital with the husband on Monday, but died at night,” a source disclosed.

    TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports that Hon. Ilolo was appointed by Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, alongside four others in July 2019, to represent Delta South in the Commission.

    She was the first woman to emerge as a lawmaker in Isoko South Constituency 1, at the Delta State House of Assembly in 1991.

    Her tenure was however, truncated by the then military government.

    Late Catherine Ilolo was among the lsoko South local government committee that supervised the distribution of COVID-19 palliatives to vulnerable persons across the council area, in April.

    Her demise comes two weeks after a commissioner in the Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (DESOPADEC), Hon Joyce Overah, passed on after a brief illness.

    Delta Covid-19 team suffers mysterious deaths

    The number of personnel at the frontline of the fight against COVID-19 in Delta State has depleted following the sudden death of some taskforce members in the past few weeks.

    According to reports, no fewer than 20 persons, mostly ad-hoc personnel in the fight against COVID-19 have allegedly died after brief illnesses.

    There are insinuations that they may have died as a result of the ravaging global disease.

    A report published in The Sun newspapers claimed that details of the demise were being kept away from the public to avoid tension and panic.

    The list, according to the report did not include high profile government officials in the state.

    Last Sunday, Secretary to State Government, Chiedu Ebie and Commissioner for Information, Charles Aniagwu tested positive to COVID-19.

    The two top officials who hail from Governor Ifeanyi Okowa’s Ika constituency, are now in an isolation centre for treatment.

    Chief Press Secretary to Governor Okowa, Olisa Ifeajika, who confirmed the COVID-19 positive status of his fellow appointees, said the officials were responding positively to treatment.

    Meanwhile, the state government has taken steps to curtail further spread of the disease among top officials by shutting down some office complexes.

    The affected offices include that of the SSG, off Cabinet Road; the Ministry of Information complex along Summit Road; and the Permanent Secretary (Government House) complex with the Government House, Asaba.

    The development, it was learnt, was to enable officials fumigate the offices.

    The Delta State Government said it has established a 70-bed isolation centre at the Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba, its capital.

    It said the Isolation centre was established through the collaboration between Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC), Agip and other partners.

    The Secretary to the Delta State Government, (SSG) Mr Chiedu Ebie, expressed optimism that the state was adequately prepared to contain an upsurge in COVID-19 cases.

    Mr Ebie said the state government was preparing isolation centres across the State to ensure quick response to save the lives of Deltans.

    He said, “Our resolve is to provide isolation facilities across the state and this project was started about four weeks ago and will be put into use any moment from now as almost all the equipment needed are in place.

    “With the manner with which the virus is spreading, government cannot handle it alone and corporate organisations and well meaning individuals have come to render assistance, NNPC/Agip came together and galvanised other oil companies to provide these facilities.

    “Deltans can be safer if they obey established health protocols because, it is our prayers not to have more patients in the State and for those in the isolation centres to get well and be discharged.”
