Panic grips Delta community after suspected herdsmen murdered generator repairer

Intense panic engulfed Albert Camp, a community in Oshimili South Local Government Area of Delta State following the murder of a resident by suspected herdsmen.

The victim, a 28 year-old generator technician and father of two, Austine Nwaeke. She is survived by his 25-year-old widow.

The community, a hub for migrant farmers from Anambra, Enugu and Ebonyi States, is now a ghost town as residents’ feared possible return of the herdsmen.

Albert Camp, which was founded in 1970 by Albert Chukwukelu, lies on the remote hills bordering Okpanam community, filled with lush vegetation.

This thickly populated community is made up largely of mud houses roofed with thatches. It lacks basic amenities such as roads, potable water and electricity.

Their only source of water is the Anwai River ,a tributary of the River Niger flowing a few kilometres away.

Nwaeke’s widow, Jennifer, who sat by the dried patch of blood where her husband was killed wept profusely, The Nation gathered.

According to her: “The family has tried scrubbing the blood off the concrete floor to no avail. I wake up every morning to see my husband’s blood on the floor. It is making me scared. I do not know what to tell my son’s for they keep asking after their father”.

She said she was asleep when she heard the sound of gunshots in their compound.

She noted that four heavily armed men scaled the fence of their compound and shot her husband.

Jennifer said the herdsmen revealed that they killed her husband to avenge the killing of their cows by residents of the community.

She urged the state government to assist her with the educational needs of her children, stressing that she does not have the resources to send her children to school.

The downcast parents of the deceased, Mr and Mrs Romanus Nwaeke said they have lived in the camp for thirty years where all their children were given birth to, and appealed to the Police to investigate the matter with a view to unravelling the son’s killers.

  • COVID-19: Doctors embark on indefinite strike in Delta

Members of the Association of Resident Doctors (ARD) at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Asaba, Delta State have withdrawn their services indefinitely over alleged harassment by security operatives enforcing lockdown directive.

The lockdown order was issued by the state government as a measure to prevent the spread of the dreaded Coronavirus disease otherwise known as COVID-19.

President of the ARD, Asaba FMC chapter, Osifo Patrick Nwabunor at a press briefing in Asaba maintained that since the lockdown started on April 1, Health workers have been subjected to constant harassment by the police even when they present valid means of identification as essential service providers.

Nwabunor alleged that the harassment came to a climax on Thursday when a doctor who was going for an emergency, was stopped and harassed, adding that when other colleagues came to his rescue, they were allegedly tear-gassed.

He said as a result of the constant harassment, the doctors were embarking “total shutdown of their services indefinitely until our safety and security is guaranteed.”

Nwabunor stated that the association was not callous to embark on the indefinite strike in the midst of COVID-19 crisis, but that they cannot continue to discharge their duties in an environment of constant threats and insecurity.

“These are challenging times in view of the COVID-19 but if our safety is not guaranteed, we will maintain the total shutdown,” he stated.

Nwabunor listed three conditions including that no health worker should be harassed when he/she presents a valid means of identification; that items destroyed during the Okpanam issue should be replaced; and that adequate security should be provided within the confines of the hospital, before they would return to work.

He also raised alarm about the paucity of protective kits for front line health workers across both federal and state hospitals, and appealed to the authorities to provide the kits and as well as increase the hazard allowance for front line care givers.

Army arrests soldiers in viral video threatening Delta women

The Delta State Government has commended Nigerian Army high command for arresting two soldiers who were caught on video unleashing mayhem on women and residents of Warri.

The State Commissioner for Information, Mr Charles Aniagwu, who gave the commendation in a statement on Saturday in Asaba, said the soldiers were caught in an online video.

Aniagwu expressed worries that soldiers who were supposed to be highly disciplined would indulge in such acts of brutality and threats to women.

He said that the soldiers were reportedly arrested at the 9 Brigade Military Cantonment, Ikeja, Lagos, on Friday.

The commissioner said that the military was a special force known for its discipline and wondered where the errant soldiers got their training and orientation from.

He called on the people to remain peaceful and continue to obey government directives which, according to him, are designed to protect the people from the dreaded Coronavirus.

“You will recall that in our statement on Friday, we said the attitude of the soldiers did not represent the discipline and training associated with military personnel.

“Let me on behalf of the Delta State Government thank the military high command for arresting the deviant soldiers who were bent on tarnishing the image of the army.

“The arrest of the soldiers in the viral video will no doubt restore the confidence of Nigerians in the military.

“It is worrisome that soldiers who were supposed to be highly disciplined would indulge in such acts of brutality and threats to women”.

“We call on the military high command to carry out full investigation into the matter with a view to bringing the culprits to justice.

“As a government, we will continue to partner security agencies to ensure the peace and economic development of our state,” Aniagwu said.
