Euro 2024: Hosts Germany book Q-final ticket, beat Denmark 2-0

Germany reached their first quarter-finals in four attempts at a major tournament, thanks to goals from Kai Havertz and Jamal Musiala, securing a 2-0 victory over Denmark in a storm-delayed and controversial match in Dortmund.

Meteorologists had warned of severe weather in the Ruhr region ahead of the Saturday night encounter at Signal Iduna Park. As a precaution, referee Michael Oliver suspended play for 20 minutes during the first half.

Before the suspension, Germany had a goal disallowed when Nico Schlotterbeck’s header was ruled out due to Andreas Skov Olsen being illegally blocked by Joshua Kimmich.

Denmark’s Rasmus Hojlund missed two good chances late in the first half, but the game’s major controversy involved Crystal Palace defender Joachim Andersen within a span of two minutes.

Euro 2024: Kane, Hjulmand score as England, Denmark share spoils

The Three Lions of England played a disappointing 1-1 draw with Denmark to put their hopes of making it to the second round of the ongoing Euro 2024 into delay mode.

Kyle Walker brilliantly bullied Kristiansen off the ball before sending a pass to Harry kane who then fired a shot that beat the Denmark goalie and into the bottom left corner.

Few minutes after, Dane Forward, Hjulmand latched on to a loose ball near the England box 18 and fired a shot that beat goalkeeper, Pickford for their equalizer.

All efforts by both sides to add to the tally in the first 45 minutes proved abortive.

The Three Lions had couple of chances in the second half of the encounter but luck ran against them.

After winning it’s first game against Serbia, with a slim margin, a win against the Danes would have cemented a passage to the second round but the Three Lions only earned just a point in their second game of group C.

The Danes have also not helped themselves with the scoreline as they would have to defeat Serbia in their last game to gain passage to the knock out phase.

Despite the Three Lions of England unconvincing performance so far at the tournament, the Super Computer has tipped them to emerge champions of the competition.

Reactions trail attack on Danish Prime Minister

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen was taken to the hospital with a minor whiplash injury after a man hit her in central Copenhagen, her office said.

Frederiksen is “safe but shaken” by the incident, the office said, adding that her scheduled engagements on Saturday were cancelled.

Eyewitnesses told Danish media that the 46-year-old prime minister was assaulted on Kultorvet square in the capital’s historic centre on Friday but had been able to walk away from the scene.

Police quickly arrested a 39-year-old man in connection with the incident.

According to local media, the suspect later appeared in a pre-trial custody hearing in a Copenhagen district court.

The man denied that he had anything against Frederiksen, saying she was “a really good prime minister” and that he had been surprised to run into her on the street.

Police investigating the assault do not believe that the attack was politically motivated.

Local media reported that the man was drunk and under the influence of other drugs at the time and that he was a Polish citizen who had been resident in Denmark for a long time.

Condemnation poured in from across Europe.

“Shocked to hear about the violence against my friend Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen of our ally Denmark.

“I strongly condemn all violence against our political leaders,” NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg wrote on the social media platform X.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen called it a “despicable act which goes against everything we believe and fight for in Europe.”

“French President Emmanuel Macron denounced it as “unacceptable” and wished the leader a quick recovery.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz posted a get-well message on X.

“Dear Mette, I wish you a speedy recovery,” he said.

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak posted on X: “Democracies must be free from intimidation and threats.”

“I strongly condemn any form of violence against democratically elected leaders in our free societies,” Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo said.

“An attack on a democratically elected leader is also an attack on our democracy,” wrote Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson on X.

The incident comes as the EU’s 27 countries elect more than 700 members of the European Parliament during four days of voting that began on Thursday.

Voters in Denmark would go to the polls on Sunday.

There have been at least two attacks on politicians in Germany in the immediate run-up to the elections.

Earlier, on May 15, Slovakian Prime Minister Robert Fico was shot and seriously injured.

Qatar 2022: France zooms past Denmark 2-1 to go top of group D

Paris Saint Germain forward, Kylian Mbappe scored two second-half goals to secure second-round qualification for France at the Mundial.

Mbappe scored in the 61st and 86th minute to power France to the second round of the tournament.

Recall that France crashed out of the tourney in 2022 after winning as host in 1998.

The victory puts France clear atop Group D with six points, and Les Bleus become the first nation at the 2022 World Cup to mathematically secure a knockout stage place.

It was a resounding performance from France throughout, and Les Bleus were unlucky to reach halftime without securing the opener. They finally managed to do so just past the hour mark, as Mbappe snuck a shot between two defenders and past an in-form Kasper Schmeichel to put France in front.

The Danish team gave it their all but all effort to secure at least a point in the game proved abortive.

They had equalized through Andreas Christensen header in the  68th minute  but couldn’t hang on as the French team were relentless and continued to mount pressure on them before Mbappe scored the winner inside 86th minute.

France had been beaten twice by Denmark at the Nations League but Le Blues nicked it when it mattered most securing another three points and cementing their place on top of the group plus almost certainly getting a second round qualification..

World Cup: Denmark held by Tunisia in Group D opener

Denmark were held to a draw by Tunisia in their World Cup opener in a raucous atmosphere at the Education City Stadium in Al Rayyan.

Despite fielding many Premier League regulars, the much-fancied Danes were given a tough workout in Group D.

Both sides had goals ruled out for offside, while Denmark’s Andreas Cornelius somehow missed from a yard.

There was 95th-minute drama when referee Cesar Ramos checked the pitchside monitor over a potential Denmark penalty for handball, only to stick with his original decision and award a goal-kick.

One of the pre-tournament favourites, Denmark will need to find some form if they are to qualify from a group that also includes World Cup holders France.
