‘Now I’ll rip Deontay Wilder apart’ – Anthony Joshua boasts after victory against Walin

Shortly after defeating Otto Walin by Technical Knockout in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, British-Nigerian boxer, Anthony Joshua said of Deontay Wilder that he “could rip him apart” as the boxer known as  ‘Bronze Bomber’ lost to Joseph Parker.
Noticing that the fighter couldn’t carry on, Walin’s corner threw in the towel at stoppage between the fifth and sixth rounds, thus making it three wins from three in 2023 after he came back from back-to-back defeats to Oleksandr Usyk,.
Asked to rate his performance against Walin, Joshua explained that it was his trainer who would give him the verdict on his showing.
Recall that the Brit hired trainer,  Ben Davison for the fight against the Swede.
He said: “I can’t rate my performance. Ben Davison, my performance team, I’ll leave it up to them.”
He then described it as, “just another fight. I respect Otto. Not so much a throwback fight, just another day in the office.”
Continuing, he added that he just wanted to be a victorious fighter for as long as possible.
“Victory by any means. Like Otto, you want to do whatever it takes to be victorious. That’s all I want to be.
“I was looking on the roster of heavyweights that have been on this card. I’ve fought Otto, fought Parker, was going to fight Baby Miller. I’ve been around the block.”
Asked about the finish to the fight, Joshua paid tribute to Wallin, before adding:
“It is all about your vision, your timing and your reaction. I am just a gifted fighter that has a special gift and I use it to the best of my ability. I work hard – extremely hard. And if it works, it works and today it was my day, thanks god.
Turning to Wilder, who had attempted to heap the pressure on Joshua in the week before the fight, he said he did not watch the defeat to Parker, that throws their planned fight into disarray.
He said: “I wasn’t watching. I just focused on myself. I know how important it was for me. I heard that Deontay lost. So what? He’ll be back.
“Deontay, everything that he said about me, I could rip him apart right now, but I’m going to take the higher ground.”
With Tyson Fury yet to fight Usyk for the undisputed status, there could be some wait for Joshua to get another shot at the title, though he may fight Filip Hrgovic to put himself in position for a chance.
Discussing becoming a three-time champion, he said: “That would be great. Every fight leads to a final destination. Keep on praying and working hard. I’ve got to stay focused because I’m on a journey and it’s hard.”
Joshua’s promoter Eddie Hearn was effusive over his fighter.
He proclaimed: “He’s back, they told me, Ben Davison and his team, he’s back. He’s destroying people in sparring, he’s punching people so hard. I believe that Anthony Joshua is the best heavyweight in the world. That was a punch-perfect performance against Otto Wallin, [who] is an excellent heavyweight.
“He absolutely dispatched him. He broke him down, he broke his nose, he broke his body, he broke his eye. It was a stunning performance. I think he’s unbeatable, 2024 is going to be a massive year for him.”
Hearn believes that Croatian fighter Hrgovic is the next choice for a match-up as he anticipated the proposed Wilder fight now to be unlikely.
“It was a tough decision between the championship and Deontay Wilder,” he added. “He signed for Wilder, he lost tonight, that’s OK, it happens in boxing. Maybe it’s a blessing because really he wants championships, and now Otto Wallin is No. 2 in the division, it’s going to be Hrgovic against AJ for the world title to see him be a three-time world champion. Every heavyweight should be on notice, he’s back.”

Wallin whose only loss was to Tyson Fury in 2019 by unanimous decision has now suffered his career’s second defeat to Anthony Joshua.

However, speaking at Friday’s weigh-in, Joshua remains focused on Saturday’s fight and knows that without dispatching the Swede, he might not have a future in the sport.
“As I always say, let me focus on what I’ve got to focus on,” he told TNT Sports. “Without Saturday night there is no future.
“Saturday night, as I’ve been saying all week, that’s been my main focus. Whatever happens in the ring, that’s where my heart is. I need to get this win.”
On the event in Riyadh, Joshua added: “This is the best fight card in history and I’m here with you guys. I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else in the world right now.
“If my prayers are answered I’ll get the win. I’ve been focussed, praying hard and whatever god wants from me,
I’ll follow that path, who knows? I’m making sure it’s not just prayer, I’m following up by action as well.”
Wallin, who went the distance with Tyson Fury in 2019, was confident of providing an upset when quizzed over his blueprint to beat Joshua.
“I think by being myself,” he answered. “I’m a smart fighter, I’m a southpaw, I’ve trained for this moment for a very, very long time. I’m very much ready for it.
“We see tomorrow. All I know is tomorrow there’s going to be a new king and he’s from Sweden.”

Elsewhere, In another heavyweight boxing bout, Joseph Parker pulled off a shocking upset victory over Deontay Wilder. Parker, who like Wilder is a former heavyweight champion, won by unanimous decision.

With the win Parker (34-3, 23 KOs), the former WBO title holder, has now won four consecutive bouts. Wilder (43-3-1, 42 KOs), the former WBC titleholder, was competing for the first time since October 2022.

Heavyweight Boxing: Deontay Wilder speaks on clash with Anthony Joshua in December

American heavyweight boxer, Deontay Wilder has confirmed that the clash between him and Anthony Joshua will happen in December.

The much anticipated clash between both heavyweight boxers have generated a lot of reactions from their fans on social media.

Talks are also ongoing for Wilder to take an interim fight against Andy Ruiz, though these appear to have reached a stalemate.

‘The Bronze Bomber’ assured 78SportsTV that the blockbuster bout with Joshua in the Middle East is definitely happening.

“We coming baby, soon! The next fight, we’ve been working very hard, you’ve seen me training. It’s always been Ruiz, but if he doesn’t want to accept it then we will move on, or maybe hold out until the Joshua fight, because that’s definitely going down.

“Y’all need to get your money ready for that,” he said.

Skill Challenge Promotions are determined to stage Wilder vs Joshua, even if they can’t agree a deal for an undisputed showdown between Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk on the same show, which now looks to be off the table for December, as per Fury’s promoter Frank Warren.

Wilder could be forgiven for perhaps wanting a fight before taking on Joshua, given he has not boxed since his one round demolition of Robert Helenius in October of last year.

Joshua is well accustomed to fighting in Saudi Arabia, which played host to both his successful rematch against Andy Ruiz Jr back 2019 and his defeat to Oleksandr Usyk last summer.

Wilder has never boxed in Saudi himself, though he was seen in attendance at the Tommy Fury vs Jake Paul fight in February, where it is speculated that early talks for a fight with Joshua could have occurred.

However, Joshua has been billed to fight Dillian Whyte on August 12 in Saudi Arabia.

Joshua vs Wilder: Heavyweight clash set for December

Deontay Wilder and Anthony Joshua could head to the rings in December 2023 if all contract talks go well between the management of both boxers.

Joshua has said that a potential fight with Deontay Wilder is ‘95 percent done’ on his side and could take place in December if the deal goes through.

Talks are ongoing over a proposed ‘tournament’ in Saudi Arabia which could also involve Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk fighting on the same card.

Recall that Joshua claimed his first win in over two years after defeating Jermaine Franklin in his last fight on April 1, having previously fallen to two consecutive losses to Usyk in 2021 and 2022.

He then announced he would not return to the ring until December, ruling out a summer showdown with either Fury or Dillian Whyte.

Joshua now looks set to face off against the former WBC World Champion Wilder at the end of the year in a fight that could have happened when they were both champions.

“From my experiences with Saudi, if they say they are going to do something, they are more than likely going to do it. So, that’s one end of it,” Joshua told Metro.

“And then you let the other guys do what they do. But as the man behind the scenes, it is important to start getting ready. In terms of it getting delivered, I honestly believe it is 95 percent there.

“He is good, I respect him, I don’t undermine him. That will make me raise my game. I respect what he has done and what he has done in this division. It is hard to become a champion, and he did it, so I have to respect that,” the British-Nigerian said.

Joshua vs Wilder: Boxing promoters plot titanic heavyweight clash in 2023

British boxer of Nigerian descent Anthony Joshua and American boxer Deontay Wilder could be squaring up against each other in the ring come 2023 as a potential bout between the two boxing greats is being discussed.

Joshua’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, has confirmed that talks for a potential bout with Deontay Wilder are back on, adding that Wilder’s promoter, Shelly Finkel already hinted that they are studying the fight proposal.

The bout was supposed to have happened in 2018 but talks broke down along the way.

Joshua and Tyson Fury initially had a pre-contract agreement for a bout on December 3rd but it has now broken down over failure to sign contract papers.

Fury has gotten another opponent in Derek Chisora for the December 3rd bout in Cardiff.

Meanwhile, Joshua has now confirmed that the earliest he would return to the ring is next year and it could be a big fight with Deontay wider.

Moreso, few number of alternative opponents have been brought up as the 33-year-old looks to get his career back on track.

Wilder’s manager Finkel recently admitted ignoring Hearn’s offer concerning a fight against Joshua. The ‘Bronze Bomber’ instead forced a brutal first-round stoppage against Robert Helenius after returning from two defeats of his own against WBC champion Fury.

Hearn has finally received a reply from Wilder’s camp as he plots a titanic heavyweight clash between the Bronze Bomber and his star fighter Joshua. The promoter is mapping out Joshua’s route to a potential world title fight after his damaging consecutive defeats to the unbeaten Ukrainian Oleksandr Usyk.

“I actually sent Shelly Finkel an email back in August to talk about a deal and he actually replied to me yesterday (Tuesday),” Hearn told the DAZN boxing show on Wednesday.

“I invited them out here to Abu Dhabi this week, they can’t come, but I see the Deontay Wilder fight probably being the second fight for Anthony Joshua in all honesty, but he’s up for fighting anyone.

“If he waits, he may go straight into that fight, it all depends on when he returns, if he returns early in the year, he’ll fight someone else first and if not he’ll go straight into the Whyte or Wilder fight.”

A possible battle against Wilder represents a genuine super fight for Joshua, who Hearn insists will not avoid an opponent on his road back to the top.

Whyte, meanwhile, returns to the ring November 26 against Jermaine Franklin, after his world title defeat to Fury in April.

Hearn is considering all of Joshua’s options with Wilder now a serious contender to fight the Brit in a tantalising heavyweight clash next year.

“I think it all depends on when Joshua fights, if he waits until April or May, he may go straight into the Dillian Whyte fight, if he fights in February, he may have a warm-up fight first,” Hearn said. “He’s coming to Abu Dhabi this week; we are sitting down with him to plan the next step and we’re on the verge of mapping that out.”

  • Wilder returns, knocks out opponent with just three punches

Wilder returns, knocks out opponent with just three punches

After losing the trilogy battle to  Tyson Fury, American boxer, Deontay Wilder returned to the ring with a bang.

Wilder delivered a devastating punch on Robert Helenius in the very first round of the eliminator fight for the World Boxing Council.

The introduction of the fighters lasted longer than the fight itself. Wilder did not wait long and went all out as soon as the bell rang to start the fight.

The fight proved way too easy for the Bronze Bomber who just threw three punches to send Helenius to the canvass.

After just 177 seconds, Wilder was victorious, with his knockout so brutal, not even the bell saved Helenius, with just three seconds left on the clock in the opening round when that final blow landed.

In his post fight reaction, Deontay Wilder breaks down while answering questions in a  press conference after Robert Helenius win

The Bronze Bomber spoke about the dangers of boxing and Prichard Colon who was left in a vegetative state following a brain injury suffered in 2015.

Wilder said: “My heart goes out to him and I hope he’s doing ok [Robert Helenius], he’s gonna be able to go back to his family. You know, people always going on about records and all this oh he lost and he’s a bum and all that, get your bum ass in there. That’s a great knockout, he’s devastating and making history and stuff like that.

“How much that man gonna suffer? We’ve seen what’s happened, look at Colon, Prichard Colon, this man ain’t have no kids, they don’t understand, they need to understand what we go through man, and I don’t even know him like that, but he’ll always be an advocate for us. This man won’t ever know what it’s like to be someone’s father and that’s the most precious thing in the world to be somebody’s father. But he won’t ever be somebody’s father because he got in the ring to support his family, but now, his family gotta take care of him for the rest of his life. We don’t know if Robert will be the same after this, I just did a job.”

Heavyweight Boxing: Deontay Wilder looks in Joshua’s direction

Deontay Wilder is looking in Antony Joshua’s direction in what he describes a heavyweight showdown and the biggest fight in the world.

Wilder said it was a matter of fight before the biggest heavyweight boxing bout between them comes to life.

The Bronze Bomber will return to the ring for the first time this weekend after suffering a trilogy defeat to WBC champion Tyson Fury.

Recall that Wilder lost two of his last three heavyweight boxing bout after recording 42 wins.

12 years and 10 months into his professional boxing career, Deontay Wilder has fought 45 times with 42 wins, 2 losses, and 1 draw.

Meanwhile, Wilder will be hoping to claim his 42nd KO against Helenius on October 15 and claims he could face Joshua soon after.

Speaking to Kate Abdo on The Good Fight, Wilder said: ‘I’m still in the business, Anthony Joshua’s still in the business.

“People always tell me, ‘When you gonna fight Joshua?’ That’s the biggest fight in the world between us, still. So it ain’t ‘if’, it’s just ‘when’.”

The American boxer said he needed some time away from the ring to process the back-to-back defeats in 2020 and 2021 as they were the only losses of his professional career.

A lot of boxing enthusiasts expected Wilder to retire from boxing but the Bronze Bomber has put his retirement plans away with his October 15 bout with Helenius

A victory over Helenius would propel him closer to the heavyweight summit once more and tee up potential showdowns with the likes of Anthony Joshua, Andy Ruiz Jr and Dillian Whyte.

However, when asked who he would like to fight if he was given the choice, Wilder said Oleksandr Usyk.

The American heavyweight said: “Of course, if I get to choose I will fight Usyk. Or Andy Ruiz because they are both a title shot. Who wouldn’t.

BREAKING: Again! Tyson Fury beats Deontay Wilder, retains WBC heavyweight title

The Gypsy King has retained his heavyweight crown with an 11th-round knockout of Deontay Wilder before a delirious crowd of 15,820 at the T-Mobile Arena.

“I’m the best fighter in the world and he’s the second-best,” says Fury after the fight, which contained five knockdowns in total (and nine overall in the trilogy).

He adds: “I was hurt, he’s a tough man … it was a great fight tonight, worthy of the best trilogies. I pray for (Wilder), so God will soften his heart.”

Wilder has left the ring and disappeared into the tunnel, but not before holding up his right hand with a smile to salute them.

The result establishes Fury’s supremacy over his American opponent once and for all after their first fight ended in a split draw and their second in a knockout win for the Briton.

In the build-up to Saturday’s fight, Wilder had accused Fury of underhanded tactics in the second fight. But Fury’s second successive victory leaves little room for doubt over who is the superior fighter.

Fury tests positive for COVID-19, fight with Wilder moved

Britain’s Tyson Fury has tested positive for Covid-19 and his heavyweight boxing title showdown with Deontay Wilder has been postponed from July 24 to October 9, promoters announced Thursday.

The bout for Fury’s World Boxing Council crown will still be fought at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

England’s Fury, 30-0 with one drawn and 21 knockouts, fought Wilder to a draw in their first fight in 2018, allowing Wilder to keep the WBC crown.

But Fury, who turns 33 in August, stopped Wilder in the seventh round in February 2020 to claim the WBC crown and deliver the first loss to the American, who stands 42-1-1 with 41 knockouts.

“I wanted nothing more than to smash the ‘Big Dosser’ on July 24, but I guess the beating will have to wait,” Fury said.

“Make no mistake, I will be back and better than ever. We will fight October 9 and I will knock him spark out.”

Ex-WBC Champion Deontay Wilder traces root to Nigeria

Former World Boxing Council (WBC) heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder has disclosed that he has traced his roots to Edo State, Nigeria.

In a viral video on Youtube, Wilder said he would like to go back home to learn about his culture.

Wilder said in the video:“I want to go back and learn more about my culture and information with things about me. Once I’m done with what I’m doing, I’m going back to see my tribe, Edo.

“I want to see my culture and my ancestors and learn a lot of things. We all have lots of things that we are connected to that we know nothing about. I’ll love to go there and do research about my roots and my tribe.”

It is not immediately clear if Wilder’s realisation of his roots informed his moniker, “Bronze Bomber.”

Wilder enjoyed a five-year reign as the WBC heavyweight champion between 2015 and 2020.

He eventually suffered his first loss against Tyson Fury in February 2020.

However, he will get the opportunity to avenge the loss when he will square off with Fury in their third meeting on July 24.
