Why I embarked on abattoir business – Ex-Osun deputy gov

Mr Benedict Alabi, a former Deputy Governor of Osun, said he embarked on Abattoir business to boost the state’s Internal Generated Revenue (IGR) and create employment.

Alabi served as deputy governor of Osun from 2018 to 2022, during former Gov. Adegboyega Oyetola’s tenure.

The former deputy governor in an interview with NAN on Friday in Osogbo, said the abattoir and farm investment would help in producing premium and hygienic meat for public consumption.

He said that the Kire Modernised Abattoir, which he established, was unique in supplying hygienic meat to hotels, multinational catering clients, distributors, and direct sales via personal contacts.

“I believe the abattoir will help in increasing food production and also create an avenue for job opportunities,” Alabi said.

According to him, the need for such strategic partners will help in promoting self-sufficiency and other benefits in the state.

“Kire Integrated Farm under my leadership also seek supports from the African Development Bank (AfDB) among key partners while waiting for the Bank of Agriculture (BOA) for its nod.

“You will agree with me that without their support it will be a kind of greesy on our own part and that shows the significance of strategic partners.

The former deputy governor commended President Bola Tinubu for his Renewed Hope Agenda in the agricultural sector, adding that the president’s initiatives have started yielding the right results.

Alabi, however, said for a modernised abattoirs and mechanised farming system to strive, more resources are needed in the area of electricity, modern farm equipment, viable ranches and good market environment.

The abattoir is located at Km 29, Ife-Ibadan Expressway, Ikire, Osun.

Ondo: APC moves to reconcile Gov Akeredolu, deputy

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has inaugurated a reconciliation committee to address the crisis rocking the Ondo State chapter, leading to the impeachment proceedings against the deputy governor.

Dr Abdullahi Ganduje, the APC National Chairman performed the ceremony on Friday in Abuja.

“Since the return of democracy in 1979, we have documented a number of disagreements between principals, governors, and their deputies, leading to impeachment or resignation and to very uncomplimentary relationship.

“We are interested in ensuring a peaceful coexistence and a good working relationship between the state governor and his deputy,” Ganduje said.

He said that this was the essence of the committee which he said comprised people with vast experience and cognitive knowledge on the issues in the state.

“This is a solid team that is well qualified to look into this issue and give appropriate recommendations to the party’s leadership,” the APC national chairman said.

He said the committee was expected to interface with all contending people in the state.

This, he added was with a view to gathering facts and circumstances surrounding the lingering impeachment process of the Ondo deputy governor.

Ganduje said the committee was also to advise the party on the most amicable ways of handling the lingering issues leading to the impeachment process of the deputy governor.

He said the committee also had the mandate to make necessary recommendations on resolution of issues and any other matter that may come up in the course of its assignment.

“The committee has one week after its inauguration to submit its recommendation. We already sent a message that all further actions and processes should stop on this issue,” Ganduje said.

Responding, Alhaji Aminu Masari, the chairman of the committee, assured that the committee would do its best to come up with lastings on Ondo APC problems.

“I had a privilege of working harmoniously with Ondo State deputy governor, we had no rancour or disagreement, our relationship is still up to this moment.

“Our committee will look at issues disspationately. We will put in the very best in working for the party and its members. We will work with it to achieve the objectives set for us.

Other members of the committee included the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Mr. Gboyega Oyetola, Sen. Jack Tilley Gyado, Sen. Tanko Almakura, Mr. Martins Elechi, Malam Mohammed

  • Obaseki’s deputy reportedly jets out to US as House starts impeachment moves tomorrow

Obaseki’s deputy reportedly jets out to US as House starts impeachment moves tomorrow

Embattled Deputy Governor of Edo State, Comrade Philip Shaibu, has reportedly travelled to the United States amid alleged plot by the state governor and his loyalists to use the State House of Assembly to impeach him.

Shaibu’s journey to America happened as lawmakers loyal to the state governor have launched a series of meetings to perfect the impeachment plot.

The lawmakers in the governor’s camp have, according to insiders, begun a drive for signatures with which they planned to reinforce their petition and push through a resolution to impeach the character of the deputy governor and set the stage for his eventual removal from office.

The governor’s camp has reportedly approached 12 members of the Edo State House of Assembly to canvass the impeachment of the deputy governor, according to the governor’s immediate past commissioner for communication and orientation, Barrister Andrew Emwanta.

Speaking in an interview on Channels TV, Emwanta disclosed that a strategy meeting of the House members and their sponsors had been scheduled for Abuja on Sunday to perfect the impeachment plot against the deputy governor.

But Enwanta claimed during the Channel TV interview that “12 members of the House of Assembly were approached, and you know that among the 12, the deputy governor has one or two loyalists who leaked the plot.

“You know they need 16 members. So four other members were to be sourced from the eight APC members but when they saw that the plot will leak once the APC people are aware, there was a final plan for a meeting to hold on the 6th of this month in Abuja where four members’ signatures would have been forged, impeachment plot would be arranged and if the deputy governor was not comfortable with whatever would have happened he would be told to go to court.

But you know that when you impeach a deputy governor, it is very difficult to bring him back because the judicial process is very long.”

Recall that the embattled deputy governor had, on Friday, secured an order from a Federal High Court in Abuja ordering Governor Obaseki and the State House of Assembly to stay action on the alleged impeachment plot against him.

Meanwhile, there were reports doing the rounds that the political feud between the governor and his deputy was not unconnected to the 2024 governorship ambition of the former.

Shaibu, from Edo North, is planning to succeed his boss in 2024; whereas the governor is not disposed to his deputy ambition.

The governor, it was learnt, is looking elsewhere for his successor. He is reportedly looking at Edo Central and in a worse case scenario at Edo South for his successor.

But Shaibu, from.Edo North, knowing the control the governor exercises on the structure of their faction of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in the state, is perfecting his plans to dump the PDP.

Edo State is divided into three senatorial districts – South, Central, and North. Governor Obaseki, who is from Edo South, succeeded Comrade Adams Oshiomhole from Edo North in 2016, who is from the same Local Government as Philip Shaibu.

An online medium had said in a report that the deputy Governor aware of the zoning system in PDP, Shaibu went into talks with the All Progressives Congress (APC) and members of the PDP from the State, who had decamped to the APC.

Shaibu reportedly unveiled his political moves immediately after the 2023 presidential election by forming a campaign group in all the Wards across the State.

An insider familiar with the development in Government House, who confirmed the feud, said Governor Obaseki had consistently maintained that it was not time for politics so that “governance does not suffer.”

According to the report, he had insisted that at the appropriate time, attention would be given to politics.

However, the governor, the report added, maintained that “he (Shaibu) followed established protocol. Since then, he has been on the warpath by sponsoring Enwanta Adaze, a former disgruntled Commissioner, who is one of his stooges, to attack the governor.”

Just In: Real reason why Obaseki is against his deputy emerges

As things continue to fall apart in Edo the reason why Governor Obaseki is opposed to having his successor come from Edo North senatorial district, which is also the hometown of his predecessor, Adams Oshiomhole has been disclosed.

Shaibu is from the same Estako extraction as Oshiomhole and the Minister-designate, Abubakar Momoh, in Edo North.

Sources indicate that Obaseki aims to maintain a balanced power arrangement in the state by ensuring that his successor comes from Edo Central or other parts of Edo North senatorial district.

Asue Ighodalo has been identified as the person Governor Obaseki favors to succeed him.

Aside from the power balancing issue, Governor Obaseki doubts if Shaibu would continue with the development plans outlined in his 30-year vision for the state.

Shaibu’s possible defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC) was suspected when he attended Oshiomhole’s inauguration party in Abuja without clearance from Obaseki.

This development fueled suspicions and strained the relationship between the two.

Shaibu’s handling of revenue generation also raised concerns, leading to its removal from the office of the Deputy Governor, as Obaseki deemed him unfit for the responsibility.

Regarding the suit filed by Shaibu to protect against an alleged impeachment plot, the source believes it is a tactic to force Governor Obaseki’s support and keep his position even after defecting to the APC.

Governor Obaseki has put protocols in place, including requiring prior notice before Shaibu visits his office and ensuring Shaibu is denied entry to State Executive Council meetings when he’s late.

Shaibu’s lack of endorsement from his boss has stalled his formal declaration for the 2024 governorship race, but he is yet to officially announce his intentions.

Several aides close to Shaibu refused to comment on the issue, but it is believed that he plans to contest for the governorship regardless.

Akeredolu hands over power to deputy

The Ondo State governor Rotimi Akeredolu, has directed his Deputy, Lucky Aiyedatiwa to act as the governor while way for medical leave.

The Speaker of the House, Olamide Oladiji, explained that the Governor has embarked on a 21-day leave for medical treatment abroad starting from June 7, 2023 to July 6,2023.

Akeredolu has been battling an unnamed illness for months and has decided to hand over the helm of affairs to his deputy until his return.

According to a letter written to the state house of assembly, the leave which commenced on 7th of June, extends to 6th July, 2023 due to the Public Holidays on June 12 (Democracy Day) and Eid el Kabir (28th and 29th, June,2023).

The Governor has assured of his resumption on the 6th of July,2023.

  • Group writes Gov. Akeredolu over alleged plot to impeach deputy

Group writes Gov. Akeredolu over alleged plot to impeach deputy

An advocacy group, Ilaje Development Summit Group (IDSG), has called on Gov. Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo, to intervene over an alleged plot to impeach his deputy, Lucky Aiyedatiwa.

The group stated this on Wednesday in an open letter to the governor, signed by its Deputy Executive Administrator, Mr. Ola Ajidibo, and made available to newsmen in Akure.

In the letter, the group noted that the state had always been in the news for positive and progressive reasons until recent events in the state.

According to the statement, the absence of the governor had led to some cabals to hijack power and thereby making the office of the deputy governor look irrelevant.

According to the group, the situation had left it with no choice than to call the attention of the governor to the various developments in the state.

It also said that the current development, especially as it concerns one of their sons, was the height of politics taken too far.

“Your Excellency is aware of our moral support for your administration and our earnest desire that nothing shall impede your vision of leaving an indelible footprint on the developmental strides.

“We were thus greatly delighted at the recent positive news of the Federal Government’s approval of Port Ondo, which is a notable feather to your cap.

“However, news of recent events in the state as you took a leave of absence has given us great cause for concern,” the group said.

According to them, given the gravity of some and potentially immeasurable negative implications, “we are left with no choice but to bring them to your attention.

“These developments are currently leaving a sour taste in the mouth of the Ilaje nation and all right-thinking citizens of Ondo.

“The untoward events seem to be underpinned by an orchestration to unlawfully impeach or remove from office, our son and your Deputy, Hon. Lucky Orimisan Ayedatiwa,” the statement said.

The group also alleged that the state House of Assembly Speaker, Olamide Oladiji, deliberately violated the order of protocol by deliberately not acknowledging the deputy governor’s office.

The letter also claimed that the continuous harassment of the deputy governor would be seen as a deliberate plot to remove Ilaje people from political calculation in the state.

“We are particularly pained, knowing of his utmost loyalty to Your Excellency and to your administration.

“In the circumstances, we are being forced to regard the continued harassment of Hon. Aiyedatiwa as deliberate ploy to slight the Ilaje Nation from which he emerged,” it added.

The group prayed for quick recovery of the governor so that politicians taking advantage of the absence of the governor would be called to order.

Just In: PDP suspends chairman, deputy

Lagos State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has ratified the suspension of its Chairman, Pastor Philip Aivoji and his deputy, Mr Tai Benedict, pending the outcome of court cases.

Aivoji and Benedict were suspended respectively by their ward executives on April 14 over an alleged gross violation of the party’s Constitution.

The party’s Publicity Secretary in Lagos State, Alhaji Hakeem Amode, stated on Tuesday in Lagos that the State Working Committee reached the resolution after appraising the outcome of 2023 general elections.

He stated that at a meeting held on Tuesday, the committee deliberated on saving the soul of the main opposition party in the state.

He added that the committee consequently confirmed Lagos PDP Vice-Chairman (West Senatorial District), Chief Sunday Olaifa, as acting chairman, pending the outcome of court cases.

He stated also that the committee settled for Olaifa being the vice-chairman from the suspended chairman’s senatorial district.

Amode stated that the committee also constituted a seven-man disciplinary committee to look into all matters affecting the suspended officials.

Members of the disciplinary committee are Chief Abayomi Kuye (Chairman), Mrs Esther Egbi (Secretary), Alhaji Isiaka Shodiya, Princess M.A Coker, Messrs Kayode Ariwayo, Femi Oluokun and Segun Oriyomi.

Amode added that the post-election disciplinary committee was expected to revert to the State Working Committee one week from the date of its constitution.

Members of the State Working Committee at the meeting were Olaifa, Mr Agboola Akinpelu (Youth Leader), Mr Ismail Olatunji (State Auditor) and Mr Adio Salami (State Organising Secretary) and Amode.

“The five members in attendance constitute the majority of the nine members in the State Working Committee out of the original 14 members that can take the decision.

“Three of the original 14 members had decamped to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), thereby reducing the membership of the State Working Committee to 11.

“The embattled chairman and his deputy were part of the 11 remaining members and since they can’t adjudicate in their own case, only nine members were left to take decisions.

Some Lagos PDP leaders abandoned the party’s governorship candidate, Dr Abdul-Azeez Adediran, on the eve of the March 18 gubernatorial election to support either the Labour Party (LP) or the ruling APC.

The development was believed to have contributed to Adediran coming a distant third behind the winner, Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu of APC and the first runner up, Mr Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour of the LP.

Crisis is also rocking PDP at the national level with the suspension of its national chairman, Dr Iyorchia Ayu, shortly after the Feb. 25 and March 18 general elections.

  • Appeal Court nullifies sack of Ebonyi gov, Umahi, Deputy

Appeal Court nullifies sack of Ebonyi gov, Umahi, Deputy

The Court of Appeal, on Friday, vacated the High Court judgment sacking Gov. David Umahi of Ebonyi and his Deputy, Dr  Eric Igwe, following their defection to the All Progressive Congress, APC.

The appellate court, in a unanimous decision by a three-man panel led by Justice Haruna Tsanami, held that there was no constitutional provision for the removal of a serving governor or deputy governor that dumped the political party that sponsored them to power.

The court held that the only option available to a political party aggrieved by the defection of a governor or deputy it sponsored to power, was for such party to explore the option of impeachment as provided in the Constitution.

Consequently, the appellate court, voided the high court judgement that removed Umahi and his deputy from office.

The appellate court further ordered the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, to submit names of their replacement to the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Justice Inyang Ekwo of the Federal High Court in Abuja in his judgment on March 8, held that the total number of 393, 343 votes governor Umahi secured during the March 9, 2019 governorship contest in Ebonyi state, belonged to the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, which sponsored his election.

The trial court held that the said votes was not legally transferrable to the APC which governor and his deputy decamped to, stressing that the duo not only jettisoned the PDP, but also the votes that belonged to it.

It held that the PDP was bound to retain the votes and mandate that was given to it by electorates in Ebonyi state.

Ekwo held that having regard to section 221 of the 1999 Constitution, as amended, and the democratic system of governance operated in Nigeria, votes at the election and elections are won by political parties and not their candidates or the candidates sponsored at the election by the political parties.

He further made a declaration, that “votes won or scored by a political party at an election is retained by the political party irrespective of the death or exit of the candidate it sponsored for the election, from the political party.

“A declaration that candidate of a political party that won the majority votes at an election is not entitled to retain or continue to lay claims to the votes won by the political party after moving to another political party, rather, the candidate is bound to inherit, utilize or appropriate the votes won by the new political party he has adopted”.

He directed PDP to submit to the INEC, the name of its candidates to replace the 3rd and 4th Defendants, the court, issued an order of perpetual injunction, restraining governor Umahi and his deputy from putting themselves out or parading themselves as Governor and Deputy Governor respectively of Ebonyi state.

The trial court issued an order of perpetual injunction restraining APC from parading itself as the political party whose members occupy the offices of Governor and Deputy Governor respectively of Ebonyi state.

However, dissatisfied with the judgement, both Umahi and his deputy took the matter to the appellate court.

The appellants had argued that the trial court, in ordering them to vacate their offices based on the suit marked FHC/ABJ/CS/920/2021, which was brought against them by the PDP, attempted to overrule a subsisting decision of the Supreme Court in AG Federation v. Atiku Abubakar & 3 ORS (2007) LCN/3799 (SC).

They contended that the apex court had in its decision, held that no constitutional provision prohibited a sitting President or Vice President, and invariably, the Governor or Deputy Governor, from defecting to another political party.

Umahi and his deputy argued that there is no specific mention of Governor and Deputy Governor in the provisions of both sections 68 and 109 of the 1999 Constitution, as amended.

They further argued that the trial court erred in law, when it restrained them from carrying on the duties in their offices as Governor and Deputy Governor of Ebonyi State, on the premise that they acted in breach of sections 177(c) and 221 of the Constitution.

“Section 221 of the Constitution is not to the effect that votes cast during the Governorship election of March 9, 2019 belonged to the 1st Respondent (PDP), but rather to the Appellants.

“Section 177 of the Constitution is all about qualification for a candidate to the Governorship election and has anything to do with punishment for defection”, they argued.

They averred that the trial court erred in law, when it ordered the 1st Respondent (PDP) to submit to the 2nd Respondent (INEC), names of its candidates to replace the Appellants as Governor and Deputy Governor of Ebonyi .

They argued that no law gave the court the power to declare anyone that did not participate in all stages of the election, as winner of the said election.
