  • Imo 2019: Okorocha’s deputy reacts over endorsement of son-in-law, says ‘Nobody can stop me from becoming governor’

The Deputy Governor of Imo State, Mr. Eze Madumere, has said nobody including his boss, Governor Rochas Okorocha can stop his 2019 governorship ambition.

Okorocha, who is seriously backing his son-in-law and chief of staff, Uche Nwosu, had told his deputy to forget about his governorship ambition and run for the Senate instead.

Madumere has, however, disagreed with his boss.

Nwosu who hails from Eziama Obaire, Nkwerre Local Government Area, which is in the same Imo West Senatorial district where Okorocha hails from — married the governor’s first daughter, Uloma.

According to a statement by Uche Onwuchekwa, the deputy governor’s media aide, Madumere told some political leaders from the state who paid him a visit that he would pursue his ambition to a logical conclusion.

The deputy governor explained that as an administrator with many years of experience in both the private and public sectors, he was more qualified to succeed Okorocha.

The statement said, “The deputy governor once more likened his betrayal from those he managed and nurtured to limelight politically to that of the betrayal of the Lord Jesus Christ, who was also betrayed by those he loved and called his friends.

“He, however, vowed that no man born of a woman could stop his ambition, saying that God remained the ultimate decider of anyone’s future.”

However, amidst the controversy surrounding Okorocha’s endorsement of his son-in-law for governor, 20 out of the 27 members of the Imo State House of Assembly had thrown their weight behind the governor.

The member for Oguta State constituency, who is also the Director-General of the Uche Nwosu Campaign Organisation, also known as Ugwumba Movement Worldwide, Mr. Henry Ezediaro, told journalists in Owerri that the lawmakers resolved to endorse Nwosu because of their belief in his capacity to sustain the legacies of the All Progressives Congress administration in the state.

Ezediaro listed the lawmakers who endorsed Nwosu to include the Deputy Speaker of the House, Mr. Ugonna Ozuruigbo (Nwangele State constituency); and a former Majority Leader of the House, Mr. Luguard Osuji (Owerri Municipal).

“We have resolved to endorse Ugwumba Uche Nwosu because we believe that he is the only person who has the capacity to sustain the legacies of the Rochas Okorocha administration and since we have the constitutional right to impeach the governor, we also have the right to back him,” he said.

Ezediaro said the resolution to endorse Nwosu was arrived at after the meeting of the House on Thursday, which was presided over by the Speaker of the House, Mr. Acho Ihim.

On the position of the remaining seven members of the House who were not part of the endorsement, Ezediaro said, “We cannot conclude that they are not with us, so let them speak for themselves.”

  • Ahmed signs bill stopping payment of pension to Governor, Deputy in Kwara

Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed of Kwara has signed into law an amendment bill stopping payment of pension to former governors and deputy governors in the state.

Recall that the State House of Assembly recently passed by the bill stopping payment of pension to former governors and deputy governors in the state.

The passage of the bill followed consideration of a report presented by the Chairman, House Committee on Establishment and Public Service, Emmanuel Abodunrin.

With the signing of the amended law by the governor, former governors and their deputies shall no longer be entitled to pension and other benefits whenever they hold a political or public office.

Similarly, the governor gave his assent to the Ilorin Township (Prohibition Against the Production, Sale and Consumption of Liquor in Certain Areas) Law, 2018, as passed by the Kwara State House of Assembly.

Under the law, no person will be allowed to produce, sell, store or openly consume alcohol within specified areas in the metropolis.

The bill stipulates that any person who contravenes the provision of this law shall be guilty of an offense and liable on conviction to a fine not exceeding N100, 000 or imprisonment for a term not exceeding six month or both.

  • Tension as Majority Leader, Deputy, Chief Whip of Imo Assembly tender resignation letter

Three principal officers of the Imo House of Assembly on Tuesday in Owerri resigned their positions following alleged controversies surrounding the 2018 appropriation bill.

The principal officers who resigned their positions are the Majority Leader, Lugard Osuji; his deputy, Kenneth Ibe; and the Chief Whip of the House, Marcel Odunze; all of the All Progressives Congress, APC.

Tendering their resignation, the former majority leader said the action was in the `collective interest’ of the assembly.

TheNewsGuru.com reports that 17 of the 27 members of the assembly boycotted the plenary session and observed proceedings from the press gallery.

There was a heavy presence of armed security personnel at the assembly earlier, prompting members to converge at the Speaker’s lodge.

Meanwhile, the Speaker, Acho Ihim, announced the appointment of the member representing Ikeduru, Uche Oguwike, as the new Majority Leader and Chinedu Offor as the new Deputy Minority leader.

Ihim also replaced the chief whip with Arthur Egwim, APC, representing Ideato North.

The speaker said the action was in a bid to get over the `intrigues and counter-intrigues’ in the house.

He said that the former principal officers were relieved of their duties before their resignation following a request by the APC in a letter signed by the state chairman, Hilary Eke, calling for their recall.

Addressing journalists at the lodge, the minority leader of the House and representative of Ahiazu Mbaise, Ken Agbim, said that the lawmakers were acting in defence of democracy.

Agbim described the presence of armed military and police officers at the assembly as an `attack on democracy’.

According to him, the legislators had sought clarifications from the executive regarding the 2018 budget which was presented to the assembly on Dec. 28.

“We needed some clarifications from the Executive concerning the budget and it is clear our questions did not go down well with the governor.

“We believe what happened today is an attack on democracy and for the first time in a long time, we are trying to ensure our nascent democracy does not suffer,” he said.

He also urged the state government to give the legislators the opportunity to work for their people, lamenting that they had been unable to execute constituency projects in their areas.

Agbim, however, stressed that they were not fighting with the state government but to ensure that things were done the right way.

TheNewsGuru.com reports that the lawmakers had earlier boycotted the presentation of the 2018 appropriation bill by Governor Rochas Okorocha last month.

  • Ekiti 2018: Angry youths oppose adoption of Fayose’s deputy as consensus candidate

Some youths in Ekiti East Local Government Area of Ekiti State have said they will resist the alleged imposition of deputy governor, Prof. Kolapo Olusola, on the electorate.

Rising from a meeting on Saturday at Omuo-Ekiti, headquarters of the local government area, the youth condemned the adoption of Olusola as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) “sole candidate”.

They said the plan was masterminded by Governor Ayodele Fayose.

Acting under the aegis of Ekiti East Youth Forum (EEYF), the group called for the conduct of a free, fair and transparent primary in which all aspirants would participate and eligible delegates allowed to elect a candidate of their choice.

TheNewsGuru.com reports that Ekiti East is the home base of another PDP governorship aspirant and Senate Deputy Minority Whip Biodun Olujimi.

The senator has fallen out of favours with Fayose over her governorship ambition.

In a statement after the meeting, EEYF President Joel Rotimi and its Secretary, Oluwatimilehin Stephen, said the decision by a section of the PDP to adopt Olusola among several other aspirants was against the principle of fairness and justice.

The statement urged the national leadership of the PDP to intervene in the matter.

It said the crisis thrown up by the “surreptitious adoption” was capable of damaging the chances of the party in the 2018 governorship poll.

The statement reads: “The purported adoption of Olusola, even before the party releases its guidelines and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) lifts the ban on political campaign, was a pure charade and illegal. It will not stand.

The action was masterminded by Governor Fayose to cover up his illegalities. It is a ploy to continue to rule Ekiti because he knows that the deputy governor is weak.

It was unfortunate that Governor Fayose, who singlehandedly fought against consensus, is now imposing a candidate.

We commend leaders, like Senator (Biodun) Olujimi, representing Ekiti South Senatorial District at the National Assembly, for opposing the move and we urge her to take steps to stop the illegal action.”

TheNewsGuru.com reports that the adopted sole candidate, Prof. Olusola, has said he was not afraid of going into a primary election with other aspirants, expressing confidence of winning the party’s ticket at a shadow poll.

  • Ekiti 2018: Why I endorsed my deputy as next governor – Fayose

Governor Ayodele Fayose on Friday explained why he supported the emergence of his deputy, Prof. Kolapo Olusola Eleka as the consensus candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in the state for next year’s governorship election.

TheNewsGuru.com reports that the Olusola emerged from the list of strong contenders for the governorship ticket as the “most preferred candidate” at a meeting held by party faithfuls in Ado Ekiti, Ekiti State capital.

TheNewsGuru.com reports that the decision to support Olusola as the consensus candidate of the party was met with wide condemnations as other governorship candidates distanced themselves from the action.

Leading the pack in condemning the selection of Olusola as consensus candidate of the party is the Publicity Secretary of the party, Prince Dayo Adeyeye, also a governorship candidate.

TheNewsGuru.com reports that political pundits in the state reminded the incumbent, Fayose of his statement in 2014 when promised the politicians in the state that neither him nor his deputy would seek any other political office as soon as their tenure expires in 2018.

He had said, “I have taken one [oath] and I will take another one in October. After that, I will find my way to my house. Again, I have chosen a deputy governor and I have told him from the beginning that the two of us will pack our load and leave the Government House because I don’t want a deputy that will start playing politics behind me when we are in government and will be distracting me, I don’t want that again.

So, he is practically here for me to look after certain things and ensure that we succeed. When I am going, I will hold his hand and say bye to Ekiti people.”

On why he changed his mind by adopting Olusola, Fayose said man proposes, but God disposes, but that this did not mean that there wouldn’t be any primary in the state.

He said the deputy governor would compete with others in the party’s primary.

He also said that his deputy had demonstrated good character, adding that he had always allowed God’s will to be done in every situation.

The governor further said other aspirants should not be afraid of his support for his deputy since there would be primary election.

He said, “Man proposes, God disposes. Sometimes, you wish some [people] as girlfriend, but they become your wife as perfection, judgment and finality are exclusively of God. The young man is outstanding in character.

Above all, constitutionally, my deputy is at liberty to run [for election] and I am at liberty to support anyone of my choice. Above all, other aspirants have nothing to fear if they have capacity to defeat him [Olusola] as the primary election is ahead.

If my support was for them, they would not complain. Rather, they would be celebrating it by now. Most of the aspirants complaining made a success of their political career through God’s grace and by my humble self. They never complained when they were rising at the expense of others.

The adoption [of Olusola] does not mean there will be no primary. Even for sole candidates, there must be a no or yes answer, so the primary must hold.”
