La Liga: Atletico Madrid reacts over derby suspension

La Liga side Atletico Madrid have released a statement after last night’s derby with Real Madrid.

The 1-1 draw was suspended for 20 minutes as fans threw objects onto the pitch and targeted visiting goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois.

Atletico stated afterwards: “Atlético de Madrid wishes to express its rejection of the throwing of objects from part of the south end of the stands in the 68th minute of the match against Real Madrid. From the moment the objects were thrown, the club’s security department has been working with the police to locate those involved, one of whom has already been identified.

“The club will apply the internal regime provided for very serious cases to those involved in this incident.

“These attitudes have no place in football and tarnish the image of a stadium that has experienced a spectacular atmosphere with more than 70,000 spectators in its stands and the vast majority of whom have shown exemplary behaviour.”

Don’t judge Tottenham on North London derby – Postecoglou

Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou wants his players to stick to their system when facing Arsenal today.

Postecoglou has stated the performance in the derby will be more important than the result.

He said, “We’re five games in. I understand that for many people, they will see this as our first real test and I get that.

“It is pretty easy, you could almost write two stories now. If we are successful, great, we’re on the right track. If we’re not, we’ve still got a long way to go. For me, what is going to be more important is how much of our football I see in a big game like this. How much of us can I see against a top opponent?

“That will give me the biggest indicator of where we’re at but, ultimately, we’ll still be six games into a new cycle, a new group of players, a very young group of players. Either way, irrespective of the outcome, I’d say the performance will be my biggest measure, but knowing we still have a long way to go.”

Martial begged to start Manchester derby – Ten Hag reveals

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag revealed Martial “begged” to start in Man Utd’s derby win over City.

Ten Hag explained: “We decided — and he decided as well — to start. He begged to start.

“I knew the start would be so important in this game and he is really good at pressing and he is a really big element in our pressing.

“But I needed to re-evaluate at half-time and also to avoid him getting injured so we took him off, but it also had a negative impact on our game after half-time.”

Why I turned down Everton job, Wayne Rooney reveals

Derby manager Wayne Rooney has explained turning down the chance to interview for the Everton job.

Rooney came through the youth ranks at Everton and celebrated a year in charge of Derby County last month as they beat Sheffield United 2-0 at Pride Park.

“I have been here now for over three years as player and manager and you build relationships up with players, first of all as team-mates, then as manager, and with staff,” Rooney told the Mail on Sunday.

“Everything I am asking of those players in terms of hard work, honesty, trust, commitment…if I was just to turn round and say ‘I have had an offer, I’m off’, I honestly couldn’t do that to the players and the staff.

“I could see once Benitez was sacked and my name was getting linked with Everton that the staff were down and they were scared that if I left, where did that leave the club.

“I know they have been looking to me to try and help rebuild this club.

“I spoke to the staff and said, ‘I am stood in front of you and I am with you. Whatever is being said out there, I am with you’. I think that was big for them.”

I want to sign Man Utd defender, but… – Rooney

Derby County boss Wayne Rooney admits he’d like to re-sign Manchester United defender Teden Mengi.

Mengi is expected to leave on loan this summer but yesterday he featured for United against Derby.

“Teden did excellent for us last season,” Rooney said. “I think he was getting better but unfortunately he got injured towards the end.

“At the minute from Teden’s point of view there is nothing I can do, I still can’t bring loan players in.

“I think he knows, and Manchester United know, he is a player I like. My hands are tied behind my back at the minute.”

Wayne Rooney slams Tottenham for sacking Mourinho

Derby manager Wayne Rooney has slammed Tottenham over the sacking of Jose Mourinho today.

Spurs have fired their Portuguese coach just six days before they meet Manchester City in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley, and Rooney believes there is no-one better to outwit Pep Guardiola than Mourinho.

“I think it’s crazy doing it before a cup final,” said Rooney, who worked with Mourinho at Manchester United. “It’s strange timing anyway. Surely they could have waited until after the cup final if that’s the direction they wanted to go in.

“Mourinho is a manager who loves winning trophies, that’s quite clear to see. He’s won a lot of trophies throughout his career.

“If there was one manager to set up a team to play against Man City in a cup final it’s Jose Mourinho. Tottenham haven’t had the best of seasons so from that point of view so it’s crazy and a massive risk.

“I’m sure Daniel Levy could have waited until the day after the game, that would have made more sense if they wanted to get rid of Mourinho.”

Man Utd end Man City winning run in derby match

Manchester United brought Manchester City’s sequence of 21 successive victories in all competitions to a crashing halt with an impressive derby victory at Etihad Stadium.

Pep Guardiola’s side still have what looks to be an unassailable 11-point lead at the top of the Premier League, but the manner in which United subdued a previously unstoppable City and enhanced their own top-four chances will be a huge confidence boost to manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and his players.

United, who have now gone 22 league away games unbeaten – including 14 wins – stunned City with a fast start and were ahead after a penalty was awarded inside the first 30 seconds when Gabriel Jesus fouled the impressive Antony Martial.

Bruno Fernandes scored from the spot despite City keeper Ederson getting a strong hand on the ball, then United fashioned the win with a mixture of solid defence and constant menace on the break.

Rodri almost equalised just after the break when his shot glanced off the angle of post and bar, but United effectively sealed the win – condemning City to their first loss since a 2-0 defeat at Tottenham on 21 November – when the outstanding Shaw, who had earlier missed a chance to double United’s lead, led a counter-attack, exchanging passes with Marcus Rashford before beating Ederson with a low shot.

Solskjaer’s team, who had not scored in their previous three games, moved back into second place a point ahead of Leicester City in the increasing tight fight for a place in the top four.

  • Rooney loses first game as Derby manager

Rooney loses first game as Derby manager

Wayne Rooney suffered defeat in his first match in permanent charge of Derby as relegation rivals Rotherham won 1-0 at Pride Park and Norwich opened up a seven-point lead at the top of the Championship table.

The former Manchester United and England captain was officially confirmed as the Rams’ manager on Friday, having held the post on an interim basis since the departure of Phillip Cocu in November.

But his reign started inauspiciously as Jamie Lindsay’s late strike sent County second bottom of the table.

Norwich remain well on course for an immediate return to the Premier League thanks to a fast start away to Cardiff.

Grant Hanley put the leaders in front after just four minutes, nodding in at the far post after a flick on from a corner.

And it was 2-0 after 20 minutes as Todd Cantwell rounded off a slick counter-attack by slotting into an empty net following a smart save from Alex Smithies.

Joe Ralls gave Cardiff hope by thumping into the bottom corner from 12 yards after 65 minutes but the hosts were reduced to 10 men five minutes later when Marlon Pack was shown a second yellow card and slipped to a fourth successive defeat.

Second-placed Swansea can close the gap at the top back to four points with victory later at Barnsley.

Bournemouth missed the chance to go second after a 1-0 loss at home to Luton.

The Cherries’ task was made more difficult when Jefferson Lerma was shown a straight red card after 26 minutes for catching Tom Lockyer in the face with a stray arm while competing for a header.

Bournemouth pushed to overcome their numerical disadvantage but Luton capitalised as the hosts tired to take the lead after 67 minutes.

Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall curled the winner into the bottom corner from 15 yards.

Watford returned to the playoff places with a 2-0 win over Huddersfield.

Tom Cleverley gave Watford a 54th-minute lead by capitalising on indecisive defending from Huddersfield.

Alex Vallejo attempted to pass the ball back to Ryan Schofield, who hesitated as Cleverley closed in and beat the goalkeeper to the ball to slide in from six yards.

Joao Pedro made sure of the points 10 minutes later, tapping in at the far post from Kiko Femenia’s cross.

Sammy Ameobi struck twice as Nottingham Forest secured back-to-back wins for only the second time this season with a 3-1 victory against Millwall.

Birmingham manager Aitor Karanka enjoyed a successful return to the Riverside as Scott Hogan struck to earn the Blues a 1-0 win and prevent Middlesbrough from moving into the play-off places.

A 1-1 draw did little to aid Stoke and Blackburn’s playoff hopes.

  • McClaren names Wayne Rooney sole manager of Derby

McClaren names Wayne Rooney sole manager of Derby

Wayne Rooney will be in charge of Derby County on Saturday for their clash with Wycombe Wanderers.

Manchester United legend Rooney, 35, had been taking charge of the Championship strugglers along with Liam Rosenior following the sacking of Phillip Cocu earlier this month.

But just two days after arriving as technical director at Pride Park, Steve McClaren has decided the partnership was not working and handed Rooney full control by himself.

Rooney has the job at least until the proposed takeover of Derby by Sheikh Khaled Zayed Bin Saquer Zayed Al Nayhan, a member of the Abu Dhabi Royal Family.

That £60million deal still needs to be signed off by the football authorities after current owner Mel Morris agreed to sell up at the start of November.

  • Much Ado about Derby, Chadian Rebels And Boko Haram

    By Evang Sunday Attah

Last week, Chadian soldiers, angered by an offensive on their men by the terrorist Boko Haram group, launched an onslaught on the insurgents and almost totally annihilated the remnants of the Boko Haram from their territory.

This is good given the bestiality of the insurgents, their recidivism and enormity of terror on innocent citizens.

Since the Chadian expedition, the Nigerian social media space urged on by a particular online publication that had made it a duty not to see anything good about the Nigerian armed forces, began to sing the praises of the Chadian troops to the extent of giving the impression that the Chadians have done what Nigerians have not done in the fight against insurgency.

This was also worsened by comments credited to the Chadian president, Idris Derby, that gave the impression that Nigerian troops are not playing their part on the war effectively.

But a pertinent question to ask is, how did neighbouring Chad come to have such a high population of the insurgents in the first place when it started in Nigeria?

For anybody that has followed reports of the war against insurgency in Nigeria, they are two simple reasons Chad surged with the influx of the insurgents.

One, the insurgents are renegades of the terrorists who fled Nigerian territories and crossed over to the Chadian side after been mauled by Nigerian troops in the renewed wave of operations since Lt. General Tukur Yusuf Buratai took over the command of the Nigerian army.

Since 2015, the insurgents have been wiped out and their bases destroyed and it became difficult for them to operate in Nigeria and many of them ran to countries that share borders with Nigeria including Chad.

The second reason in that due to the proximity of Chad to Nigeria and shared affinity with many communities in Nigeria, many Chadian citizens and rebels who had nothing to do had joined the ranks of the Boko Haram and found a safe haven to operate during the previous administration.

But with the renewed onslaught on the terrorists after the appointment of the current Chief of Army Staff, many of them decided to relocate to their country as they could no longer continue with the acts of banditry and for fear of being killed by Nigerian soldiers.

Nigerian troops in the last four years have done much more than the social media space is willing to admit in terms of defeating insurgency in the landscape.

For more than four years since the coming of the current administration, the terrorists have not found it easy operating on the Nigerian side the way they were used to.

Boko Haram terrorists under fire from Nigerian troops, run to take shelter in neighbouring African countries like Niger, Chad and Cameroun which they found less dangerous.
This has at several times frustrated the efforts of the Nigerian troops due to the diplomatic issues involved.
There was a time the insurgents came under intense fire from the Nigerian side that they had to blow up the bridge linking the communities on the border to make it impossible for Nigerian troops to cross over and continue the onslaught.

It would also interest people to know that the Nigerian government had in the past, tried to work out various arrangement for military cooperation with other African countries but these have collapsed due to lack of trust and inadequate synergy for the joint effort.
At a point, the other countries quietly withdrew from the joint exercise leaving Nigerian troops to prosecute the war. But Nigeria was able to up the game and degraded the terrorists to the point where they could no longer launch attacks on Nigerian communities at will.
The fight became so successful that Nigeria no longer needed to wait for inspiration from other countries but trudged on till it began to win the respect of other nations.
In no time, Nigeria took back its leadership position in the fight and other nations began to watch keenly and copy from its strategy.
The success Nigeria recorded within the period, encouraged the other countries to begin to reconsider their positions on the war and began to once again mobilise troops for the fight.

It is within this period that Nigerian troops took the fight to the theatres of war and were able to penetrate the base of the insurgents at Sambisa Forest, took out a great number of them and destroyed their armoury and established a base at Camp Zero.
Nigerian soldiers also went after the insurgents and retook military bases they had seized in towns like Bama, Monguno and Gwoza.

Troops were also able to recapture territories captured by the terrorists which they severed from other parts of Nigeria and hoisted their flags.
The 14 local government that came under the authority of the insurgents were recaptured and liberated.
Internal security improved as many roads that were declared impassable due to the activities of insurgents were liberated and open for use.

The barricading of major roads by organizations and in worship centers in state capitals and other places was also reduced as people no longer fear conducting business within their premises.
Nigerian troops also put a stop to the penetration of the hinterlands by terrorists who were going as far as Adamawa, Bauchi, Gombe, Kano, Kaduna and even to the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, with their bloody campaigns.
Currently, Nigerian troops have put the terrorists in disarray.
They have made it impossible for them launch any attack on communities as they constantly repel them whenever they attempt to do so by destroying their bases and sending them fleeing in all directions.

This was the case in Biu, Michika, Maiduguri Garkida and other places where the insurgents had attempted to launch attacks in recent times.
So while we should commend the Chadian troops for how well it has performed in its latest effort to rid the sub region of terrorists, the Nigerian troops should be commended for setting the pace.

It takes more than one onslaught for the war on terrorism to be brought to an end hence the recent attack by the Chadian troops only comes as complementary to the efforts of Nigerian soldiers.
Many of our soldiers have died in this fight. Many are in various hospitals with various degrees of injury.
The least we could do to appreciate them is to commend them.
We should not extend the kind of cynicism Nigerians display whenever their national team is playing another country and seems to be losing to issues of security.
We should learn to stand by our own to the very end.

    Attah wrote from Abuja.
