  • Local derbies add spice to AFCON last-16 ties

Two derbies will add spice to the Africa Cup of Nations round of 16 as Nigeria and Cameroon renew their often bitter rivalry while Ivory Coast face a Mali side who have done a lot of catching up on their neighbours recently.

Hosts Egypt need to get over their first-round jitters as they meet South Africa while rank outsiders Madagascar and Uganda will look to cause further upsets against Democratic Republic of Congo and Senegal respectively.

Nigeria and Cameroon do not meet that often.Their match on Saturday in Alexandria will be their 23rd clash but the sparks tend to fly when they do especially as three of those matches have been in AFCON finals with Cameroon winning all of them.
The Super Eagles were furious in the 1988 final when Henry Nwosu had a goal disallowed in a match Cameroon won 1-0.
Twelve years later, the two played an epic final in Lagos when Nigeria hit back from two goals behind to draw 2-2, only to lose 4-3 on penalties.
However, replays showed that Victor Ikpeba’s missed spot kick for Nigeria should have been allowed because the ball crossed the line after hitting the bar.
Overall, Cameroon have won 11 of the 22 matches to Nigeria’s four although the Super Eagles qualified for last year’s World Cup at their rivals’ expense after a 4-0 win at home and 1-1 draw away.
Both teams are under pressure after finishing second in their groups, Nigeria after losing 2-0 to Madagascar and Cameroon after playing out two 0-0 draws
Mali have not beaten Ivory Coast since 1983, and have won only three out of 18 meetings, but the two sides, who meet in Suez on Monday, seem to be heading in opposite directions.
Ivory Coast’s golden generation, including striker Didier Drogba, have retired while Mali have one of the most exciting squads at the tournament, with nearly all their players based in Europe’s top five leagues, particularly France.
They won their group in style with seven points out of nine and their shooting from distance has been outstanding, producing four of their six goals.
Egypt, who meet South Africa on Saturday, won all their group games without conceding a goal but it did not satisfy the home audience.
Their Mexican coach Javier Aguirre said:“The pressure is a lot of people want us to win.
“We lack confidence in our game and on the ball. Maybe it’s the pressure of 70,000 people.” he said.
Uganda go into Friday’s match against Senegal after the federation (FUFA) said it had settled a pay dispute with the players by offering an additional $6,000 each.
“Considering the magnitude and importance of the event (and) the interests of the Nation, Government, the Sponsors and the gallant fans, FUFA has agreed to pay $6,000 to each player over and above the agreed terms in the Code of Conduct,” it said.
Benin, who have reached the knockout stages for the first time at the fourth attempt, face a solid Morocco team, who won all their group games 1-0, in Friday’s other game.
Newcomers Madagascar, still unbeaten at the finals, meet Democratic Republic of Congo in Alexandria on Sunday.
Algeria, arguably the most impressive team of the tournament, face Guinea the same day.
The match between Ghana against Tunisia on Monday could go to penalties if the group stage is anything to go by as Ghana drew two of their matches and Tunisia all three.
  • Lampard excused from Derby training for Chelsea talks

Lampard excused from Derby training for Chelsea talks

Derby have excused boss Frank Lampard from reporting for pre-season training duties, with the club expecting him to be offered the Chelsea manager’s job.

Lampard will not be at training on Monday or Tuesday as talks continue with the Blues, where he spent 13 years as a player.
Derby made the decision so the move can be “concluded as soon as possible”.
If Lampard leaves, the Championship side expect to have a replacement confirmed by the end of the week.
Rams assistant manager Jody Morris will also be absent from training.
It is widely assumed Morris will move to Chelsea with Lampard, should the former England midfielder be given the manager’s job and succeed Maurizio Sarri, who lefgt Stamford Bridge to take over at Juventus last month.
Derby’s players will largely be doing fitness tests over the next couple of days, so the club feel they can operate without anyone in overall charge.
The squad are due to fly to Florida for a training camp on Thursday.
A Derby statement released on Monday said: “The first few days of pre-season training will be focused on fitness training and will continue as planned under the guidance of the fitness, medical, conditioning and sports science teams at the club’s Training Centre.”
Ex-Chelsea captain John Terry, now assistant manager at Aston Villa, said there is “no-one better equipped” to manage the west London club than his former team-mate.
Lampard made 648 appearances for the Blues, winning 11 major trophies with them, after joining from boyhood club West Ham for a fee of £11m in 2001.

  • Chelsea given permission for Lampard talks

Chelsea given permission for Lampard talks

Chelsea have been given permission to speak to Derby boss Frank Lampard about their vacant manager’s job.

Lampard, 41, spent 13 years as a Chelsea player and would replace Maurizio Sarri, who has joined Juventus after one season at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues would have to pay the Rams about £4m if they appoint Lampard.

“With pre-season fast approaching for both clubs it is hoped this will allow Chelsea to swiftly conclude their discussions,” a Derby statement read.

“The club will make no further comment until it is appropriate to do so.”

Lampard embarked on his first campaign as a manager last season, leading the Rams to the Championship play-off final where they lost to Aston Villa.

The former England midfielder made 648 Chelsea appearances, winning 11 major trophies.

If he does take over, he will inherit a transfer embargo after Chelsea were given a two-window transfer ban by world governing body Fifa – a decision the club are appealing against at the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

  • [Video] Ashley Cole scores first FA Cup goal

Former Chelsea and Arsenal left-back, Ashley Cole scores his first FA Cup goal to give Derby hope in their fifth-round tie, but hosts Brighton hold on to secure a 2-1 victory and a place in the quarter-finals.

The 38-year-old played the second half of the match against Brighton, making only his second appearance since joining in January.

Derby coach, Frank Lampard described Cole as a “machine” after scoring in defeat to Brighton, and said they will need the defender for their Championship promotion push.

“He has been working hard. He wasn’t quite ready for 90 minutes today but that’s a great exercise he has given 45 minutes. I thought he was calm and assured on the ball. He has all the experience from his career and got his goal. It’s really good for us and we will need him.”

  • Man City striker Aguero doubtful for derby clash

Sergio Aguero remains a doubt for Manchester City’s derby against United on Saturday.

The Argentine striker had a fitness test on Friday, having not featured for City since March 4 following a knee injury suffered in training.

“I don’t know right now [whether he will play],” said Guardiola in his pre-match press conference. “We have training on Friday afternoon and will see how his physical condition is.”

Gabriel Jesus has started up front in Aguero’s absence and admitted he produced one of his worst performances in City’s 3-0 Champions League defeat at Liverpool, but Guardiola is backing the Brazilian to respond.

“He is so strong,” said the City boss. “He is 21 years old. It is the first time he played at Anfield, it is the first time he played in a knockout game in the Champions League.

“You have to live those situations to be better players. You always suffer the first time. The next time will be better.

“But I don’t agree with him – he played good. He did what we spoke about [beforehand] and fought a lot.”

Guardiola will clinch his first Premier League title, and City’s third in seven seasons, with victory over their city rivals on Saturday.

“It’s another game,” said the Spaniard. “United defend differently from Liverpool. We try to play the same way as we have all season.

“So far our season has been so good. It’s almost done. It’s a bit like Liverpool – it’s almost done. We are close to being champions.”It’s a coincidence because it’s the derby but it doesn’t matter. We just have to be focused on what we have to do to win the game.”

Victory over United would be a welcome boost to City ahead of Wednesday’s second leg against Liverpool but Guardiola admits the Reds already have one foot in the semi-finals.

“It was a tough result and makes it difficult for us next Tuesday,” he said. “Of course we are going to try, we will have our chance to be in the game and to try and go through.

“I reviewed the Liverpool game and they played like they always play at Anfield. For the last 15 or 20 minutes of the first half, they were much better than us. But the first 25 minutes and the second half, we were so good.

“They are already almost qualified for the semi-finals but we have 90 minutes. The door is almost closed but it is still a little bit open. There is still some space to get in and we’re going to try.”

  • Manchester derby: City celebrations not to blame for ‘hilarious’ row, says Ian Wright

Former Arsenal striker Ian Wright rejected claims that Manchester City over-celebrated Sunday’s derby win and played down the post-match row.

United boss Jose Mourinho had milk thrown at him outside the Old Trafford dressing rooms after objecting to City’s post-match celebrations.

The Premier League leaders won the game 2-1 to go 11 points clear at the top.

“It’s just hilarious on so many levels, I don’t think you can blame City,” Wright told BBC Radio 5 live.

“People are accusing them of not having class, they are saying you don’t know how to act when you win, but you’ve got to take into consideration they have just broken a record, the 14 wins, against their biggest rivals.”

City’s players celebrated in front of their fans after the final whistle, while the coaching staff tried, without success, to get coach Pep Guardiola to join them.

After the players and staff then headed down the tunnel, it is understood Mourinho made his feelings known outside the visitors’ dressing room as he made his way to post-match interviews.

In the ensuing row the Portuguese coach had water and milk thrown at him, while City coach Mikel Arteta suffered a cut head after he was hit by a plastic drinks bottle. It is not known who threw it and sources from both clubs say no punches were thrown during the incident.

Wright believes Mourinho should have used City’s celebrations as a way to motivate his players to not give up the title battle just yet.

Speaking on 5 live’s Monday Night Club, Wright added: “There’s a long way to go in the season.

“Maybe Jose should have said can you hear that next door? Can you see what they’re doing? We’ve got to make sure that we ram this back down their throats instead of turning it into ‘Milkgate’. I find it hilarious.”

The Football Association announced on Monday that it will seek observations from both clubs in relation to the incident with the clubs having until 13 December to respond.

The referee, Michael Oliver, did not see the incident and did not include it in his report of the match.

Manchester derby: Jose Mourinho has water & milk thrown at him in tunnel row

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho had water and milk thrown at him in a row following Manchester City’s derby win at Old Trafford.

United were upset at what they viewed as an excessive City reaction to Sunday’s 2-1 win, which sent them 11 points clear at the top of the table.

City’s players celebrated with their fans after the final whistle and coaching staff tried to persuade manager Pep Guardiola to join them, but he refused.

After the players headed down the tunnel, it is understood Mourinho made his feelings known in the corridor from which both dressing rooms are accessed as he made his way back out to do post-match interviews.

The City camp reacted, with Brazil goalkeeper Ederson and Mourinho exchanging words angrily in Portuguese – but Mourinho carried out his post-match media engagements as normal and made no mention of it.

In October 2004, then United manager Sir Alex Ferguson was hit by pizza thrown by Arsenal midfielder Cesc Fabregas after a bad tempered encounter between the sides at Old Trafford.

In the build-up to Sunday’s Premier League game, City were irritated when United denied them permission to use cameras to gather footage for their £10m behind-the-scenes documentary.

  • Man City have to enjoy derby victory-De Bruyne

Kevin De Bruyne revelled in Manchester City’s “big win” over rivals Manchester United, though he insisted the runaway Premier League leaders cannot afford to be complacent.

Pep Guardiola’s City claimed derby honours and an 11-point lead atop the table with a 2-1 victory at Old Trafford on Sunday.

City benefited from two set-pieces, Nicolas Otamendi scoring the winner after Marcus Rashford cancelled out David Silva’s opener, as the Sky Blues sealed a record-equalling 14th win in succession in the Premier League.

Speaking afterwards, City’s Belgian star De Bruyne said: “Lots of teams lost points this weekend so it is a big one for us [the win] just to put more pressure on the rest.

“It is a big gap. If we slip up we are still in the lead. We can’t be complacent. We need to do what we have all year.

“I prefer to be 11 points ahead than 11 points behind that’s for sure.”

Asked if he was pleased with City’s performance in the derby, De Bruyne added: “If you come away with a 1-0 lead, yes – at 1-1, no.

“That’s the way it goes. There were two teams with a lot of quality. It was a nice game to watch with the intensity and the duels. A real

    derby.”

  • Man Utd v Man City: Owen Hargreaves tips Romelu Lukaku for key derby role

Manchester United’s Romelu Lukaku could be the most important player on the pitch in Sunday’s Manchester derby, says ex-England player Owen Hargreaves.

After joining United from Everton for £75m in the summer, Lukaku hit seven goals in his first eight league games but has scored only twice since.

Hargreaves, who played for both Manchester clubs, believes another element of his game will be crucial.

“United will need to get out of defence through Lukaku,” he said.

“Everyone said before he came to the club that his hold-up play was not good enough for a top, top player but in the past few weeks it has been much better.

“United need that so they can get players up the pitch. He could be the most important player in the game.”

United are second in the Premier League, eight points behind their city rivals.

Pep Guardiola’s side boast the most prolific attack in England’s top flight, having scored 46 goals in 15 games.

United, meanwhile, have the best defence. They have conceded just nine goals, with only one of those at Old Trafford.

Jose Mourinho’s side adopted a cautious approach in their 0-0 draw at Liverpool in October, and Hargreaves believes they will have to be more adventurous against City if they are to retain hopes of winning the title.

“United have to win,” said the 36-year-old, who played for United from 2007-2011 before spending a season at City

“A draw is good for City. How many points are they going to drop over the rest of the season? They’ve already won the league so the goal for them is to make some noise in the Champions League.

“It is more a must-win game for United. If City win, the title race is over.”
