EPL: Berbatov predicts matchday 10 fixtures

Veteran Manchester United forward, Dimitar Berbatov, has predicted match day 10 fixtures that will hold this weekend.

The league returns after the international break with Arsenal travelling to Chelsea, while Everton play Liverpool in a merseyside derby.

Manchester City welcome Brighton, while Manchester United are away to Sheffield United.

Berbatov, speaking with BetFair, said: “Man City v Brighton – It won’t be easy but I see them (City) getting the three points unless Brighton throw in a massive surprise. Prediction: 3-1.

“Chelsea v Arsenal – I see goals in this game. Both teams can score goals. The usual suspects I fancy to score. The likes of Nicolas Jackson and Martinelli as they’re always in the box. Prediction: 2-2.

“Sheffield United v Man United -Man United need to concentrate and get the game by the scruff of the neck. I’m tempted to say this will be a draw but I’ll go with Man United to win. Prediction: 1-2.”

EPL Golden Boot : Berbatov reveals own preferred choice winner

Former Manchester United striker, Dimitar Berbatov has revealed his preferred choice for the golden boot award in the EPL this season.

The battle is between Mohammed Salah of Liverpool with 22 goals and Son Heung-min with 21 goals already to his credit.

One of the two will likely take home the top-scorer award this season, as no other player is in sight.

Manchester United’s Cristiano Ronaldo is third with 18, but he’s confirmed to miss his side’s Premier League final day fixture against Crystal Palace due to injury.

The Egyptian captain could become the fourth player in Premier League history to win the Golden Boot at least thrice.

Son, meanwhile, has surpassed 20 goals in a league season for the very first time with Tottenham and could become the first Asian player to win the prize.

But Berbatov, who won the Golden Boot in 2011, is backing Son to beat Salah to the award this term.

The Bulgarian told Betfair (via The Mirror): “I’m rooting for Son to join the club and become a Premier League top goalscorer; he has to score one to equal Salah and two to go ahead of him.

“He can do it and secure Champions League football for Spurs in the process.”

  • ‘Sancho will prove worth in £100m Man Utd deal’

‘Sancho will prove worth in £100m Man Utd deal’

Jadon Sancho will be “worth it” for Manchester United even if they have to invest “over £100 million ($131m)” in the Borussia Dortmund winger, says Dimitar Berbatov.

The Red Devils continue to explore the option of bringing the England international back to his homeland in the summer transfer window.

Little progress has been made in discussions to this point, with Dortmund making it clear that they will not be parting with a prized asset for anything less than his full market value.

United had been hoping to bring costs down, with the coronavirus pandemic hitting even big-spending clubs down, but Bundesliga giants are prepared to stand their ground.

Berbatov believes those at Old Trafford should now be paying whatever it takes to get a deal over the line.

For him, Sancho would be a useful addition to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s squad, with there every reason to believe that an immediate return would be offered on United’s investment even if they are forced to dig deep.

“Jadon Sancho would be an amazing signing for any team, United included,” former Red Devils striker Berbatov told Betfair.

“It becomes a luxury problem to have so many attacking options, but it brings hard decisions. Someone has to be benched, and Ole will have to deliver that news to someone.

“Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford are well established in world football, and [Mason] Greenwood now deserves his chance to continue his progression, and I don’t want to see him stalled.

“We know United can afford to pay for Sancho, and if it happens, the club will be happy, but it will also be tricky. Over £100m is a lot of money, especially now in the current situation, but I’m sure he will be worth it.

Berbatov reveals role in Martial move to Man Utd

Former Manchester United striker Dimitar Berbatov has revealed his role in Anthony Martial’s move from AS Monaco.

Before United signed him in 2015, the club’s head scout called Berbatov ahead of the transfer to get his thoughts on the young Frenchman.

“I had a wonderful time at Monaco,” said Berbatov to talkSPORT. “I go there, Claudio Ranieri was the coach, and the team they had… Anthony Martial, James Rodriguez, Fabinho, Ricardo Carvalho, Radamel Falcao, Danijel Subasic.

“In the first training session, I’m 33, they start flying around me!

“The United head scout called me, he was like: ‘Berbs, we are looking at this kid Martial and wanted to ask what you think’.

“I told him this boy is unbelievable, the things he can do. He can be a great player, he just needs someone to guide him on the pitch.

“Of course, I’m still waiting for my commission!”

  • Berbatov says Bulgaria need footballing miracle to win at Wembley

Dimitar Berbatov believes Bulgaria will need a footballing miracle to beat England in their Euro 2020 qualifier against England at Wembley on Saturday.

But the Bulgaria legend also says the Balkan nation could hurt Gareth Southgate’s side.

England have scored 10 goals in two Group A victories against the Czech Republic and Montenegro.

On the other hand, Bulgaria have managed only two points from four games and sit joint bottom of the group.

Bulgaria are winless in 10 previous encounters against England and the current squad is light years away from the one that reached the semi-finals of the 1994 World Cup.

That was when current manager Krasimir Balakov was their midfield linchpin and former FC Barcelona striker Hristo Stoichkov banged in six goals.

“The hosts are overwhelming favourites because they have world-class players, but miracles happen in football,” said former Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United striker Berbatov, Bulgaria’s all-time record goalscorer.

“This is a relatively young Bulgarian team. It isn’t dominated by one outstanding player, like Histro Stoichkov back in the day, or when I was in the team.

“What I like most about this Bulgarian team is their excellent spirit.”

Berbatov, while previewing the game in his role as an ambassador for Betfair, picks out 22-year-old striker Kiril Despodov as one player who could cause England problems.

Despodov is on loan to Austria’s Sturm Graz from Italian club Cagliari.

“He can hurt England with his speed and tricks on the ball. So, England’s defenders need to watch out for him,” he said of the 2018 Bulgarian Footballer of the Year.

Defeat at Wembley will leave Bulgaria’s hopes of qualifying for the finals looking forlorn, but Berbatov hopes Balakov is given time to turn around their fortunes.

“He is a national legend,” he said. “I know him well and had the pleasure of playing with him for the national team. He only took over as coach this year. So, it’s too early to judge him. But I really want Balakov to succeed in the job.

“We’re in a difficult qualifying group for Euro 2020 and, if the players give 100 percent, the fans can’t ask for more.”

Bulgaria have scored only two goals in their 10 clashes with England, while Berbatov is one of only two Bulgarians to score at Wembley.

It is a statistic he hopes will improve on Saturday.

“I will love for someone else to find the net. In my wildest dreams, I will like us to win it,” the 38-year-old said.
