DJs warned against using songs without owner’s authorisation

The Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC), has warned Disc Jockeys (DJs) of performing other people’s music publicly without license or owner’s authorisation.

Dr John Asein, Director-General of  NCC, gave the warning in a advisory issued on Wednesday in Abuja.

According to him, the attention of  NCC has been drawn to the practice of some DJs, who publicly perform music without obtaining the requisite copyright licences from rights holders or their approved Collective Management Organisations (CMOs).

He said under sections 9 and 12 of the Copyright Act, 2022, the owner of copyright in a musical work or sound recording had the exclusive right to reproduce, perform or communicate it to the public.

“Engaging in any of these acts without the owner’s authorisation constitutes an  infringement under the Act.

“Such infringement may constitute a civil wrong or a criminal offence under section 44 (7), punishable upon conviction by a fine of not less than N1 million or imprisonment for a term of not less than five years or to both.

“The public performance of music by a DJ, whether at hotels, event centres, clubs, gardens, or recreational facilities, constitutes both a public performance and a communication to the public of the musical work and sound recording, as provided for under the Act,” he said.

He advised them to obtain appropriate licences and pay royalties to the approved Collective Management Organisation (CMO) prior to engaging in such performances.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the approved CMO for musical works and sound recordings in Nigeria is the Musical Copyright Society, Nigeria (MCSN).

“The Commission is aware that the Disc Jockey’s Association of Nigeria (DJAN), as the umbrella body representing DJs in Nigeria, has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding with
    MCSN.

“Under the arrangement, DJAN is authorised to work with MCSN to facilitate the payment of royalties by DJs nationwide, based on the tariff that DJAN had negotiated
    with MCSN,” he explained.

The D-G, however, stressed that the commission would not hesitate to investigate, arrest, and prosecute any DJ found to be in contravention of the law.

He added that henceforth, the commission would  be working with other relevant authorities to support the initiative of DJAN, to ensure that DJs carry out their trade in compliance with the Copyright Act.

How I learnt to mix sounds – Fast-rising Nigerian DJ, DJ Wapsam

Fast-rising Nigerian disc jockey (DJ), Ayipada Samuel, popularly known as DJ Wapsam has opened up on how he learnt how to mix sounds.

DJ Wapsam in a recent interview with Adebayo Animasaun shared his way up to becoming most sought-after DJ in the music industry.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports DJ Wapsam’s sounds and mixes are used by popular celebrities and skit makers on their various social media posts.

The 24-year-old, who thinks his age is no barrier to reaching his potentials, opened up in this explosive interview on his growth and development as a DJ.

Speaking with TNG, DJ Wapsam said nobody taught him and that DJ is something he loved since when he was in secondary.

He revealed that at first, he did not get his parent’s support but that eventually he got their blessings.

“Age is just a number. I’ve been dominating since when I was 10 years old from drumming in church to school and always trying to outdo my age. So age is nothing when it comes to achieving my potentials.

‘”Music, sound inspired me to become a DJ. My parents did not support me from start though but later at some point that I needed major support, they were always there to support me spiritually, financially and physically.

“I’m done with my secondary school and now processing my university. DJs need to be educated, for some people, I guess they might have limitations because as a DJ you really need to know a lot of stuffs concerning spellings and more,” DJ Wapsam said.

Asked how he learnt to mix sounds, he said: “Nobody taught me. DJ is something I love since when I was in secondary and at that time my parents won’t allow me to go learn such thing, based on my environment and the looks people have for DJ then was not that good enough so I had to teach myself a lot of the major part of it with the help of YouTube and other online platforms.

“Playing for the first time on stage, I was so nervous but at the same time I always enjoy it whenever I’m DJing so that’s my major inspiration.

“I have been owed a lot after playing at an event, they come up with some excuses after the party and as time goes on they won’t remember to pay my balance”.

Furthermore, DJ Wapsam explained how his female fans have been a major push to his career, refusing to refer to the female fans as a distraction.

“I won’t call them distraction though, because they are the ones supporting, and spreading my mix. I still spend time with my childhood friends, they are my number one fans,” he said.

DJ Wapsam also noted that his religion is a pathway to his success, stressing that God has been on his side.

“My religion makes me go even harder and I always remember I have GOD on my side. I have a lot of purpose in life, want to be fountain of blessings to the whole world.

“I gain more amazing fan base, meet more top influencers and celebrities, more bookings too but my major concern is I get lesser credits for my works on Instagram, TikTok and other social media platforms,” DJ Wapsam said.

Coronavirus: DJ makes £3,000 in two hours selling toilet roll

In the wake of the coronavirus scare, a British DJ, Lee Marshall has leveraged on the pandemic to make as much as £3,000 after selling 600 cases of 45 rolls at the back of his van.

The DJ also known as Disco Boy, decided to engage in bulk-buying of toilet papers, selling it to people desperately in need of the toiletry as the coronavirus pandemic gets more intense.

Speaking to Metro UK, he said: “A supplier messaged us and said they’ve got loads of toilet roll and can’t sell them because hotels aren’t buying at the moment. They’re just sitting in a warehouse. I looked in the supermarket and they were roughly the same price as an Andrex toilet paper anyway – so we’ve sort of made £3-per-pack on them.

“We kept some back for delivering at night – as we’ve had a lot of people messaging that they can’t reach us. My mate Brett was out until 11.30pm the day before. The last drop-off I did last night, the old lady was scared and left her money by the door. We’ve done so many home deliveries and haven’t charged extra for them.”

Asked if he would leverage on the scare to sell again, Lee admitted to the possibility. He said: “I’m a DJ and I’ve had so many gigs cancelled. I’ve got bills to pay and trying to keep my head above water. I’ve always been a bit of a businessman and thought you can’t always make memories, but you can always make money”
