According to him: “We have greatly improved our crime fighting efforts using technology. In the recent kidnap of a serving judge in the state, we were able to get him released unhurt.

  • Gov Diri told to move Bayelsa PDP structure to APC

Gov Diri told to move Bayelsa PDP structure to APC

A former Labour Party (LP) Governorship Candidate in Bayelsa, Mr Udengs Eradiri, has called on Gov. Douye Diri and his predecessor, Sen. Seriake Dickson, to integrate the Ijaw nation into the government at the centre.

Eradiri, in a statement on Wednesday in Yenagoa, told the two political leaders that there was no better time than now to move the Ijaws into the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Describing the current period as the time of political realignment, Eradiri said that the Ijaws could experience political alienation if Diri and Dickson failed to flow with the political reality.

He specifically said that the two political leaders should join APC in order to create the required opportunity for the Ijaws to play crucial roles in the corridors of power.

Eradiri, a former President of Ijaw Youths Council (IYC), said that taking such a political decision would attract more infrastructural and manpower development.

According to him, the Ijaw nation will gain nothing by being in opposition to the President Bola Tinubu-led administration, but will only be left to wallow in the political wilderness.

He appealed to Diri and Dickson to forgo personal interests and see the bigger picture, insisting that their joining APC would be in the overall interest of the Ijaw nation.

Eradiri, a former Commissioner for Youths and later Environment in Bayelsa, reminded them that their past political fathers, living and dead, used to align with any government at the centre.

“The time for political realignment for the ijaw nation is now.

“The current political equation in Nigeria presently will alienate the ijaw race if we don’t strategise immediately and take a decision to join the ruling party.

“I am calling on Sen. Seriake Dickson and Gov. Douye Diri to join APC now to guarantee the Ijaw nation a place in decision-making at the centre.

“This is no longer the time for bravado. There is nothing or no point to prove being in opposition to President Tinubu’s government, as it will only alienate Ijaws politically.

“Our fathers had always aligned with the centre and Ijaws, no matter how bad, had always had some say in government. But today, we have no voice in the APC-led Federal Government.

“Dickson being a former governor and now senator and Douye Diri, a former senator and now governor, will give the Ijaws a voice at the national government if they heed this clarion call and move to APC,” he said.

Eradiri called on them to jettison their personal interests and take the step, saying that it would be in the overall interest of Ijaw nation.

“Ijaws cannot be onlookers. Our resources sustain Nigeria; so we must be strategic to advance the development of Bayelsa and Ijaw nation,” he said.

“This is a distraction, and some of us are very justified in the many reasons offered to regulate the use of various social media platforms,” the Governor’s aide added.

  • We’re turning Yenagoa into a modern city – Gov Diri

We’re turning Yenagoa into a modern city – Gov Diri

Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa State has said his administration’s urban renewal programme will transform Yenagoa, the state capital, into a modern city.

Diri stated this against the backdrop of the recent relocation of inter-state commercial transporters to the new state-owned transport terminal at Igbogene.

Speaking on Wednesday during the state executive council meeting in, Yenagoa, the governor said centralised motor parks were features of modern cities, which Yenagoa was gradually turning into.

He warned against touting around the vicinity of the terminal, saying that all travellers were expected to go into the terminal for booking and boarding of vehicles.

Diri also stressed that the relocation would curb crime as passengers coming into the state would now be monitored.

He said: “I visited the new terminal and saw its beauty. This is what every modern society does.

“For those who play politics and are still criticising, I am very sorry for them. Bayelsans are however, happy with what we have done.

“It is only those who do not know what a modern society looks like that make derogatory statements about me and the government.

“For the first time in our state, we are seeing what a city is like. We want to actually turn Yenagoa into a modern city. We want to bring Yenagoa to a better place.

“I am happy that the terminal is bubbling. Nobody should act like agbero (tout) in that place. That park is a model with everything provided.

“For those who want to come into Bayelsa to commit crime, we have stopped them with the movement to the new terminal,” he said.

Commenting on the peaceful and crime-free Yuletide period, the governor commended the security agencies for their collaborative efforts that ensured the state was secured throughout the festive season.

He also noted that there was a boost in tourism and entertainment during the period, and particularly commended dancehall music star, Enetimi Odon (popularly called Timaya) for giving back to the state through his annual Timaya Day concert held on January 1.

Diri observed that the event attracted a huge crowd of mostly youths and that the show had great tourism potential for the state.

“In the whole of these festivities, what I consider as the final lap was the January 1 Timaya Day that had to do with youths of our state.

“Instructively, there was no incident of crime. I was there. The youths were well behaved and they became security by themselves.

“From what I saw, I believe there is hope for this country and for our state. We all need to do what is right,” he said.

Commenting on an ugly incident at Agbere in Sagbama Local Government Area, Diri thanked the leadership of the community for maintaining the peace and for not taking the laws into their hands.

He assured that ongoing investigation would unravel those behind the dastardly murder of a chief in the community.

Meanwhile, mix reactions have greeted the relocation of all the motor parks in Yenagoa, the state capital to a central terminal at Igbogene because of its distance from the city centre

Appeal Court affirms Gov Diri’s re-election

The Court of Appeal in Abuja, on Thursday, affirmed the re-election victory of Gov. Douye Diri of Bayelsa in the Nov. 11, 2023 governorship poll.

The three-member panel of justices led by Justice James Abundaga, in a unanimous judgment, held that the appeal filed by the appellants; Mr Timipre Sylva and the All Progressives Congress (APC), lacked merit.

The panel held that the tribunal was not in error when it struck several paragraphs of the petitioner’s reply against the governor’s election.

Abundaga said the Bayelsa Governorship Election Tribunal, which sat in Abuja, was right to have struck out the appellants’ witnesses statements on oath.

The judge said it was an abuse of court process for a party to file several processes against same judgement.

The judge added that it had not been shown that the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) machines were tendered by the appellants before the tribunal, as evidence to prove the allegations of electoral malpractice.

“The evidence of the appellants’ witnesses are hearsay and cannot be relied upon by any reasonable tribunal, ” the appellate court said.

The panel subsequently dismissed the appeal for being unmeritorious.

The court, which affirmed Diri’s election, awarded cost of N500, 000 against Sylvia and APC.

The election tribunal had, on May 27, dismissed the petition filed by Sylva and APC.

The three-member tribunal, led by Justice Adekunle Adeleye-led, dismissed the petition for lacking in merit.

In a unanimous decision, the tribunal held that the petitioners failed to adduce credible evidence to substantiate their allegations against the outcome of the state’s governorship poll.

It struck out all the additional proof of evidence and statements on oath of some of the witnesses who testified for the petitioners as incompetent.

According to the tribunal, the law expressly provided that an election petition must be filed no later than 21 days after the election result was declared.
