Minister inaugurates integrated medical outreach for women in FCT

The FCT Minister of State, Dr Ramatu Aliyu, on Sunday in Abuja inaugurated an Integrated Medical Outreach, in Karshi to be conducted across all the 62 political wards in the territory.

Newsmen reports that the free medical outreach powered by Nigerians Unite for Tinubu/Shettima Mandate was targeted at the vulnerables in the hard-to-reach communities.

The minister stated that the gesture was to provide to the indigent residents, particularly women and children, good quality, high impact Primary Health Care (PHC) services including immunisation and nutrition.

Aliyu said that the routine immunisation coverage and PHC services uptake across the area councils had been sub-optimal, partly due to the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic that had further weakened the health system.

She said: “Access to basic healthcare services has been poor due to the presence of hard-to-reach communities, coupled with the rising cases of insecurity and sub-optimal performance of the public health system.

” In this line, the inauguration of the medical outreach for the integration of PHC service delivery and Immunisation in a mobile /outreach strategy is crucial.

“It is expected to, among others, strengthen immunisation and PHC service outputs through integration, particularly in the underserved, low performing wards of the FCT.”

She, however, affirmed that the medical outreach would serve as an avenue for the FCTA to provide the most needed interventions to community members.

Aliyu further said that they include health education and promotion of treatment of common illnesses; vaccination of under-five children and pregnant women.

She also said that the outreach would facilitate the distribution of long-lasting treated nets and family planning commodities and screening for non-communicable diseases.

They include; hypertension, diabetes, routine eye screening and screening for malnutrition; as well as linkages/referral services; among others.

Aliyu assured that the FCT Administration would continue to support all programmes and activities geared towards improving the quality of lives and health outcomes of all residents of the Territory particularly women and children.

She said, “our relevant Secretariats, Departments and Agencies had been re-positioned and given necessary supports to perform for better results.

“Working with Development Partners, access would be sustained to the underserved communities with optimal services uptake and utilisation through the activities of community managerial system for PHC in FCT.”

The minister appealed to religious and traditional leaders, stakeholders and other well-meaning Nigerians in the FCT to continue to support the Administration to provide better services.

In his remarks, the acting Executive Secretary, FCT PHC Board, Dr Isah Vatsa, lauded the group for the partnership with the Administration in providing quality healthcare services.

He said that the outreach would cover immunisation, consultation by medical personnel in three points, and laboratory screening for diabetes and malaria.

Other services include; provision of free drugs, eye screening with free glasses for those that need them, blood pressure screening, weight and temperature check.

  • Minister advocates grants, tax holidays for creative Industry

Minister advocates grants, tax holidays for creative Industry

Dr Ramatu Aliyu, Minister of State for FCT, has solicited various waivers, grants, tax holidays, rebates and other related incentives as part of measures to boost the creative industry.

Aliyu made the call while delivering a lecture at the ongoing 2022 Zuma Film Festival.

The festival has the title: “Post COVID-19 funding policy framework partnerships between the FCTA and the Nigerian Film Corporation, for the Nigerian film industry through rebates, location incentives, tax credits and film grants.”

She argued that the only major way government could make the creative industry attractive to investors and major players was to introduce waivers, grants, tax holidays, rebates and other related incentives.

Aliyu lamented that lip service had been paid to the quest for a film industry development fund over the years, adding that the film industry needed a better understanding of the tax laws and how they apply to the industry.

She, however, assured stakeholders that the present administration was leaving no stone unturned toward ensuring that the tax environment was investment-friendly.

The minister said that an investor-friendly tax environment would certainly attract foreign investment because tax incentives available within a nation’s tax environment constitute veritable opportunities for local and foreign investors to build on.

“With the return to democracy in 1999, several waivers, grants, tax holidays, rebates and incentives were given to super industrialists, helping them to wax strong from available statistics.

“It therefore becomes very logical for us to try these same measures which have worked in the agricultural and manufacturing sectors and see if they wouldn’t also succeed in the creative industry sector.

She said that the COVID-19 pandemic had taken a toll on countries, global economies, industries, families and individuals world over and has left humans with the “new normal.”

Aliyu, however, reiterated that the FCT Administration was poised to provide all the necessary incentives that would attract major players in the film industry into the nation’s capital city.

Thenewsguru.com report that the Director-General and Chief Executive, Nigerian Film Corporation, Dr Chidia Maduekwe, pointed out that the Nigerian Film Corporation Annual Lecture series remains one of the corporation’s platforms used to contribute to the evolvement of policy frameworks.

“Policy documents and frameworks are, by no means, mere directional intent; they are key navigational and instructional compass which provide clear and distinct objectives as well as the means to achieving them.”

Maduekwe called for policy framework that would not only provide the needed opportunities, but which could exacerbate the needed impetus to grow the Nigerian creative economy.

While recognising some of the challenges facing the film production chain in the country, the NFC boss called for adequate and appropriate return on investment for film and other creative works.

“We are aware that securing locations for film shoot that will depict Nigeria in its beautiful state don’t abound. Where they do, filmmakers find it difficult to access them.

“We believe, however, that with the existence of a policy framework, accessibility to film locations will be achieved with ease,” he stressed.

The minister, who quoted copiously from the holy book, to buttress the significance of the dialysis centre, noted that kidney disease, when detected early, could be managed and corrected.

Aliyu noted that the FCT administration, in response to the rising incidence of chronic kidney disease in 2013, operated two public dialysis and intensive care units in the district hospitals at Wuse and Asokoro.

She called on Nigerian Association of Nephrology and other health stakeholders to intensify public enlightenment on lifestyle changes as well as control of orthodox and traditional drug abuse, to prevent and control kidney diseases and other non-communicable diseases.

She commended the leadership of the church for the choice of a life-saving project, particularly at the time of rising number of cases of kidney disease.

Aliyu noted that the church was beginning to play one of its crucial roles of caring for the downtrodden in the society.

“March 2 of every year is World Kidney Day and this allows for awareness creation and free testing for early detection of kidney disease, especially in clients with hypertension and diabetes.

“Weight, urea, electrolytes, creatinine and cholesterol level checks, with evaluation of proteins in urine, among others, are additional tests necessary for early detection of kidney disease,” she said.

Earlier, the Intercontinental Overseer, Christian Social Responsibility of the church, Pastor Iluyomade, said that the Abuja dialysis centre would be the 20th in the series of specialised medical interventions donated by the church.

He added that the church had also built and donated intensive care units, dialysis centres, cancer screening centres and primary healthcare centres.

Iluyomade further stated that, to date, the Enoch and Folu Adeboye dialysis centre had donated 37 dialysis machines in Nigeria.

He added that the centre had conducted more than 30,000 subsidised and free dialysis sessions and partnered with other agencies to carry out six kidney transplants for free.

“In 2021, the foundation donated a full-fledged dialysis centre to Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital, Shagamu, from which 106 patients had benefitted.

“The foundation, in partnership with Mercy Ship International Floating Hospital, has conducted life-changing corrective surgeries for various people.

“The foundation also rehabilitated the Resettlement Community Primary Healthcare Centre, Ajah, Lagos, among others,” Iluyomade said.
