How I was raped by Lagos BRT driver – Witness

A prosecution witness in the rape and murder trial of a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) driver, Andrew Ominnikoron, on Monday narrated how she was allegedly raped by Ominnikoron after boarding BRT.

Ominnikoron is standing trial on a five-count charge bordering on conspiracy, murder, and rape.

He, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

On Monday, the witness (name withheld), who is the first for prosecution, testified before Justice Sherifat Sonaike of a Lagos High Court sitting at Tafawa Balewa Square.

The 29-year-old witness said that the defendant tore her clothes and raped her from behind.

She was led in evidence by Lagos State, Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr Moyosore Onigbanjo (SAN).

The witness, a sales representative, said that the incident happened on Nov. 25, 2021, at 8.00 p.m. at Alesh Hotel Bus Stop, after she closed from work.

She testified that when she entered the BRT, the defendant agreed to drop her at Jakande and demanded for N100 as transport fare.

She told the court that when the bus got to Lekki Conservation on Ajah Expressway, the defendant stopped the bus, brought out a medicine and drank it.

“I thought he was on medication,” she said.

The witness said that the defendant then asked her to come to the front seat, which she did.

She said that the defendant started asking her some questions and requested that they should park somewhere and have some discussions, but she declined.

“I then noticed that his manhood was up.

“I brought out my phone to call somebody but
he got up from the driver’s seat and collected my phone from me.

“He held a small knife and dragged me to the back and said I should pull off my clothes.

“We started dragging, he slapped me, held my neck, and wanted to strangle me.”

She testified that the defendant told her that if he should kill her there, nothing would happen and nobody would know where she was.

“He pushed me down, pointed the knife at me, tore my clothes and raped me from the back,” she testified.

The witness said that the defendant returned her phone and apologised when they got to her bus stop.

The witness said she did not report the rape case at any police station due to a bad experience she had with the police at Jakande.

Prosecution tendered in evidence, the dress the witness wore on the day the alleged rape occurred, and it was admitted in evidence as Exhibit 1.

Earlier, Moyosore informed the court that prosecution had amended the charge with an additional proof of evidence.

The five-count amended charge was read to the defendant and his not guilty plea taken.

Ominnikoron is facing a five-count charge bordering on rape, conspiracy, sexual assault, and murder brought against him by Lagos State Government.

The government alleged that the defendant, on Nov. 25, 2021, raped a 29-year-old woman (the witness) at Lekki Conservation Centre, Lekki-Ajah Expressway.

It also alleged that, on Feb. 26, the defendant conspired with others still at large and raped and killed a 22-year-old BRT passenger, and threw her out of a moving bus.

The defendant is also accused of sexually assaulting another 29-year-old woman ( name withheld) on Dec. 29, 2021, between Ikorodu and Mile 12 areas of Lagos State.

The prosecution said that the offences contravened Sections 165, 223, 260 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

On March 22, the defendant was first arraigned on a four-count charge.

The court has adjourned the case until Tuesday ( May 10) for continuation of trial.

Errant driver knocks down LASTMA official to death

The General Manager, Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Mr Bolaji Oreagba, has confirmed the death of one of his officials, Jamiu Issa.

The late Issa was knocked down and ran over by a driver who had driven against the flow of traffic in the Lekki area of the state while trying to escape arrest.

Oreagba, who made the disclosure in a statement on Wednesday in Lagos, said that the errant driver drove a green Toyota Sienna vehicle, with registration number FST 901 AR at the time of the unfortunate incident.

According to him, the late Issa accosted the driver who drove against the flow of traffic, facing oncoming vehicles from Chevron area, towards the Conservation Toll Plaza.

“It was reported that Issa, the LASTMA patrol team leader in Ajah … was knocked down and ran over by the traffic law offender, who had pretended to be alighting from the vehicle.

“The driver changed his action and tried to escape by reversing the vehicle, knocking down Issa with the opened door while the front tyre ran over the officer. This action fatally injured Issa in the process.

“Issa’s colleagues at the scene of the event quickly put a call through to the zonal head while some Good Samaritans and eye witnesses pursued the escaping Sienna driver to the Chevron Waterfront area where he was eventually apprehended and taken first to Ilasan Police Station.

“The driver was eventually taken to Ajiwe Police Station under which jurisdiction the event happened for proper investigation.

“According to other eye witnesses’ accounts, the driver also knocked down another person while he was trying to escape from the scene,” Oreagba said.

He said that Issa was rushed to the Lagos Island General Hospital where he was confirmed dead.

The LASTMA General Manager, who was grieving, commiserated with the family of the deceased officer.

He said that in spite of the many appeals and warnings to the public to desist from assaulting and injuring government officials, some unscrupulous elements had refused to yield to such entreaties.

He said such erring people would be made to face the full wrath of the law.

Oreagba also noted that the latest incident would not deter LASTMA officials from carrying out their duties, as enshrined in the law that set up the agency.

He appealed to the public to abide by the laws governing the state to avoid attendant consequences.

  • Lagos woman declares daughter missing, accuses BRT driver of abducting her

Lagos woman declares daughter missing, accuses BRT driver of abducting her

An unknown driver working with Lagos Bus services Limited is being charged with the alleged abduction of 21-year-old Lagos based fashion designer.

The lady whose name has been given as Bamise Ayanwole was said to be missing after she boarded a LBSL bus popularly known as Blue BRT at Chevron area of Lekki on her way to Oshodi on February 25, 2022.

The family of a 21-year-old fashion designer, Bamise Ayanwole, has raised the alarm over her alleged abduction by a driver of the Lagos Bus Services Limited.

It was gathered that the fashion designer boarded the bus at 7:30 pm but felt uncomfortable when the driver asked her to take a sit at the back seat.

Still feeling uncomfortable, Bamise sent out voice notes and video clips to express her displeasure to one of her friends on WhatsApp.

The friend who spoke on condition of anonymity explained what transpired thereafter in the bus as explained to her by Bamise

“On her way home, the driver picked up two men and one woman. This made her calm down a bit. Then she told us she would alight at Oworonshoki. We called her and noticed something was unusual about the way she was talking. We tried to reach out to her again but her phone was unreachable; then we waited a bit, thinking it was probably (due to a) low battery, only for her parents to contact us on Sunday that Bamise wasn’t home yet and since then we have been at the Oshodi BRT Terminal 3. We were told to sit and wait for the driver to come. The driver did not show up,” the source added.

In the voice notes and WhatsApp messages obtained from her friend’s phone, Bamise was heard saying that after being picked by the driver ,the BRT hasn’t picked any other passenger.

Bamise was said to have made a short video showing an unclear image of a driver and what looked like the vehicle number plate.

Bamise’s mum was seen in a viral video pointing to a blue BRT bus claiming it was the same bus her daughter had boarded on the fateful day.

“This is the vehicle that Bamise boarded. It has been parked. They say they cannot find the driver. Bamise boarded the vehicle at Ajah and said she was coming to Oshodi. The vehicle got to its destination but the child did get home. We can’t find her. They must find Bamise for me. I didn’t tell her to go to Lagos to die,” she said

Upon interrogation, Bamise’s elder brothet said he sensed a case of kidnapping because the driver of the bus is now at large.

“From my little investigation, I discovered that the company does not have proper documentation of their drivers. We learnt that the driver moved from where he claimed to be living over a year ago and his guarantor doesn’t live where he claimed to be living. The company is trying to push us aside and keep it away from the press. Our parents are aware but they aged, so we had to convince them that all is well. But we have been having sleepless nights.”

However, the police said they were investigating a case of a missing person, adding that the suspect’s guarantor had been arrested.

The Public Affairs Officer of the Lagos Bus Services Limited, Afolabi Olawale, said the company would await the outcome of the police investigation before making its position known.

  • We have no hands in commercial bus driver’s death – Lagos Taskforce

We have no hands in commercial bus driver’s death – Lagos Taskforce

The Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences Enforcement Unit (Taskforce) has distanced itself from the setting ablaze of a commercial bus driver whose vehicle was allegedly impounded.

A statement signed by the agency’s spokesperson, Abdulraheem Gbadeyan, stated that ” the Taskforce officials had no hands in the enforcement for compliance that led to a commercial-bus driver setting himself ablaze to resist his vehicle from being impounded by yet- to-identified-security agents.”

The Chairman of the Agency, CSP Shola Jejeloye, in his reaction to a report on the incident said that at the time of the incident, his men were still at the base.

“The accusations are utterly inaccurate and misleading as investigations and the eyewitness accounts of persons who were present at the scene of the incident had categorically revealed that the driver, one Mr Ayo aka ‘Eru’ poured petrol on himself to scare the security operatives from enforcing the traffic law which he violated.

“After the operatives had left, luck ran out on him and some of the hoodlums present mistook him for one of the security operatives and set him ablaze.” he said.

The chairman stated that the act of setting self ablaze, robbing self with faeces, chasing law enforcement officers with urine and other crazy acts are now the new waves of resisting arrest by recalcitrant motorists who had developed the habit and passion for violating the State Traffic and Enviromental laws.

He, however, said that if they were bold enough to be serial law breakers, they should be courageous enough to face the consequences of their illegal actions rather than constituting nuisance on Lagos roads.

Jejeloye also stated that one Mr Festus Ugbesia from Mafoluku in Oshodi area who claimed to be the owner of the bus drove the victim from the scene of the incident down to the agency’s headquarters.

Jejeloye also alleged that Ugbesia incited the members of public against the agency that the officials of the Taskforce had been fingered for setting the victim ablaze.

“It later dawned on him that the personnel of the Taskforce had no hand in it when he discoverded that our men and officials were still on the parade ground preparing for the task of the day while the transport department of the agency was still sourcing petrol for their operational vehicles at the agency’s headquarters.

“We have had many instances where imposters carried out illegal activities and mentioned the names of Taskforce personnel in the process, thereby, leading to the public pointing accusing fingers at us.

“We have arrested a few of the imposters and we will keep doing so until they desist from tarnishing the image of the agency.” he said.

He stressed that not all security operatives you see on Lagos roads are attached to the Taskforce.

“Officials of the Taskforce are trained, enlightened, educated, and are professionally equipped enough to distinguish between traffic offence and criminal offence.

“Traffic offence is not a criminal offence, as such, minimal or zero force has to be applied in carrying out the enforcement.

“Enforcement all over the world is not a tea party and in most cases, it is not people friendly, that is the reason why Taskforce operatives do not get any support from passers by during their operations. Rather what is always obtainable are little truths but massive lies against the agency” , Jejeloye said.

Jejeloye stated that the officials of the Taskforce assisted the victim to quickly get medical attention from the Lagos State Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) as part of the agency’s patriotic act and corporate social responsibility.

“Let me emphasise here that for us as an agency of government, we believe that it is better for us to allow an offender to go unharmed than to cause an injury.

“The officials of the agency are being led by Senior Police Officers who are well trained and exposed. We are civilsed, educated and professional to have allowed such an incident to happen during any of the enforcement operations,” He said.

The chairman admonished all recalcitrant offenders and advised them to know that traffic offence is not a criminal offence.

He advised offenders to always keep faith with the country’s judicial system and summon courage to submit self for prosecution at the Court for any offence committed.

“It is better and cheaper for them to face the reality of the offences they committed, rather than being evasive or demonstrating insanity to escape arrest which is no longer acceptable to us. Nigerians are no fools.” he added.

Jejeloye advised members of public to be vigilant, report any suspicious activities around them to the agency and help it in its drive to fish out fake policemen parading themselves as officials of the Taskforce .

He implored the residents of the state to support the agency in its efforts to instil discipline and achieve the State vision of zero tolerance for driving against traffic and other related offences.

“Taskforce was created to maintain law, order and sanity where there is none.

“Enforcement of traffic laws is not a tea party as any offender will do anything humanly possible to escape justice. In the process, the offender can kill, maim and cause serious injury to innocent members of the public in his bid to escape from the scene.

“Though the incident which occurred is highly unfortunate and regrettable, I will like to clearly state that it was not carried out by the officials of the Lagos State Taskforce.

“Infact we are too careful and professional to allow our operations degenerate into that ugly incident. I will like to urge residents of the state, particularly the media practitioners, to tow the line of best practices and verify their findings scientifically before publication.

“The #EndSARS impasse is still fresh in our memory and we must avoid a repeat of that ugly incident.” he said.

Mr Adeniran Oyebade, an All Progressives Congress(APC) aspirant for the Ondo Central Senatorial District seat in the 2023 elections, said a viral video where he was accused of assaulting a lady was a plot to discredit him.

Oyebade, who was referred to as Sen. Bola Tinubu’s driver in an online video on Jan. 2, was seen fighting with a lady inside a branded car.

Speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria(NAN) on Monday in Ondo, Oyebade said the video was edited by his political detractors “to suit their dirty narratives.”

Oyebade said he was not surprised by the attack on his personality by opponents who now consider him a formidable force in the next year’s election.

“I only branded my vehicle for the APC leader, Sen. Bala Ahmed Tinubu, due to the love I have for him.

“Even in America, I coordinated the entire Washinton DC and Maryland for his presumed presidential ambition.

“What people released on the social media was not what really happened. Rather it was cropped out to suit their malicious intention.

“I have never met the lady in question before in my entire life. I don’t know her, I don’t have her phone number neither do I know her name.

“The lady threatened that if I failed to pay her, she would blackmail me and make a video of me and put it on social media. And I told her that I was a military man who would not succumb to threat or blackmail because America, where I come from, will never negotiate with any terrorist.

“In the process she damaged my windscreen, tore my cloth, slapped me and wanted to enter into my car, so, I was preventing her not to enter my vehicle when her cloth tore,” he said.

  • How Governor Inuwa’s ADC, driver, others blocked my convoy, unleashed terror on me for hours – Senator Goje

How Governor Inuwa’s ADC, driver, others blocked my convoy, unleashed terror on me for hours – Senator Goje

Former Gombe Governor Senator Danjuma Goje has narrated how the aide-de-camp of Governor Inuwa Yahaya allegedly blocked and attacked his convoy while on his way to attend the wedding of his granddaughter, Fatima Abdullahi Musa in Gombe town.

Goje, who is the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Marine Transport, in a statement by his media aide, Lilian Nworie, in Abuja, said he arrived Gombe from Abuja via Gombe Airport in Lawanti, peacefully until the Governor’s aides blocked the road.

“The Distinguished Senator’s trip was peaceful until when the governor’s aides, including his aide-de-camp and his personal driver, blocked the road. For two hours, they unleashed terror on Senator Goje and those in his convoy.

“It is unfortunate that one life was lost and many cars vandalised including the Senator’s vehicle. They smashed the windscreen.

“All efforts to make the Governor’s aide-de-camp remove the blockade yielded no result as he insisted that he got instruction from above that the former governor should not be allowed into the town,” Nworie said.

She said the Governor’s driver, Aminu Hula and Gombe State APC Youth Leader, Kawu Lero have been arrested by the State Police Command.

“They have been arrested but the aide-de-camp who led the people to attack the former governor had since returned to those who sent him.

“The aide-de-camp said he was acting based on orders from the above. In this case, it is his boss, Gombe State Governor,” she said.

She however said that the former Governor as a peace-loving leader of the State has urged his teeming supporters to be calm and law-abiding and called for an independent investigation of the incident.

Ex-Gov behind the attacks – Gombe Government

Meanwhile, the State Government, in a statement by the Commissioner for Information, Julius Ishaya Lepes, blamed Goje for the incident.

The statement reads: “The former Governor, in his characteristic manner, decided to mobilise thugs from various LGAs armed to their teeth under the pretext of accompanying him from the airport into the State capital for reasons best known to him.

“Recall that during the last Eid el-Kabir Sallah celebration, the same person sponsored some thugs that threw caution into the wind and went on a rampage, leading to loss of 2 lives. Also just last week at Deba in Yamaltu Deba LGA the same scenario played out at the instance of the Senator.

“It is sad that Goje has not left his old ways and is bent on bringing back his brainchild (Kalare) to unleash mayhem and bug the peaceful atmosphere of Gombe State.”

While sympathising with families of the five people killed and those who sustained injuries, the State Government commended security agencies for their timely intervention in bringing the ugly situation under control.
