    SAD! How two Nigerian sisters drown in US while swimming in a beach

    Two teenage sisters have died while swimming at New York’s Coney Island Beach in Brooklyn.

    Aisha Mohammed, 18, and Zainab Mohammed, 17, both originally from Nigeria but now living in the Bronx, were reported missing on Friday night, July 5, in the area of Stillwell Avenue and Boardwalk West after they were seen entering the water and disappearing from view, the NYPD said.

    Police say at around 8 p.m. Friday, the sisters were swimming at Stillwell & Boardwalk West on Coney Island when they disappeared.

    Witnesses told WABC-TV that a rain storm began and most people at the beach took shelter, but the two young women went into the rough ocean water.

    A man tried to stop them but he couldn’t swim either, one witness said. It is unclear if the man knew the victims.

    A relative told News 12 they were at the beach that day with six of their cousins. Police said that an emergency call for a water rescue came in at around 8.10pm.

    Officers arrived on the scene with emergency responders from the department’s aviation, harbor, scuba units conducting a search to find the teens. Divers eventually pulled both the young women from the water an hour later, police said.

    They were both transported to NYC Health and Hospitals/Coney Island where they were pronounced dead.

    The investigation into the tragedy continues. The funeral service for sisters Zainab and Aisha Mohammad
    took place at 9:30 a.m on Tuesday, July 9, at the Yankasa Masjid Mosque.

    Sad! Seven drown in Lagos within a week, says PPRO

    The Lagos State Police Command has said a total number of seven persons have lost their lives to accidental drowning in different parts of the state this week.

    The state Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, disclosed this in a statement on Friday.

    According to him, the incidents were recorded at hotel swimming pools, a beach, and the Third Mainland Bridge.He wrote, “This week alone, seven people drowned in hotel, swimming pools and beach. Two in one hotel in Mushin, One in one hotel on the Island, One on Ibeshe Island, Two fell off Third Mainland Bridge in an accident, another one in one hotel in Shasha.”

    Recall that two passengers reportedly fell into the lagoon on Wednesday after a commercial bus crashed on the Third Mainland Bridge in the state.

    Other occupants of the vehicle sustained varying degrees of injuries in the accident.Lagos Territorial Coordinator of the National Emergency Management Agency, Ibrahim Farinloye, in a statement, noted that the driver of the 18-seater bus, who was on speed, swerved off the road and hit the bridge rails.

    Police recover body of drowned UNIBEN student, arrest two suspects

    The Edo Police Command has arrested two students of the University of Benin over the death of their friend, Francis Anuide, who was drowned in Ekosodin river, Benin, where the trio had gone to swim.

    The arrested students are Samson Kennedy, a 200-level student of Biochemistry, and Wilfred Emmanuel, a 500-level student of Optometry.

    The deceased was said to have been invited by the two friends for swimming at the river close to the Ugbowo campus of the University where he allegedly drowned.

    Confirming the arrest, the Public Relations Officer of the Police Command in Edo, SP Chidi Nwabuzor, said the duo were apprehended to assist the police in investigating the circumstances leading the victim’s death.

    Nwabuzor explained that after the case was reported at the Ugbowo Police Station, Benin, the Divisional Police Officer and his men led a team of local divers to the scene of the incident.

    “Luckily, they were able to recover the body. The case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigations.

    “Two persons were arrested because they went together to swim in that river when the ugly incident occurred.

    “Arresting them is very important so that we can know what made them leave their hostel and go to that river at that time and what happened right there in the river,” he said.

    Sources told NAN that the two students were arrested as a result of the discovery of blood on the lips of the deceased and peeled skin around his neck region.

    These, the sources said, raised suspicion amongst the victim’s family members and relatives who are demanding an autopsy.

    “After the deceased got drowned, the duo ran back to the Ekosodin community to seek help from the community and vigilante members but the deceased died before help could come his way,” one of the sources said.

    A woman who had been missing for two days was fortunately discovered alive inside her drowned Jeep.

    The woman and her jeep disappeared on April 5, and the Longview Texas Police Department immediately put her on its missing persons list.

    However, a local fisherman at Lake o’ the Pines reported sighting a black car 40 feet from a neighboring boat launch, according to the Marion County Sheriff’s Office.

    Deputies responded quickly, and when they arrived at the scene with a nearby wrecker service, they found “a person was still in the vehicle and moving” and started the recovery process.

    A police press release read: “With the assistance of the wrecker service, fisherman, and Marion County deputies, a female was safely rescued from the submerged jeep.”

    She was afterwards sent to a neighborhood hospital by emergency medical personnel for treatment.

    Authorities also made public two photographs of the rescue effort, one of which showed how far the jeep had sunk and the other of which showed two men rescuing the woman from the lake.

    People expressed their gratitude for the woman’s survival in droves in the comments section of the police department’s Facebook post detailing the news.

    A 26-year-old man Olamilekan Olubusade, had reportedly drowned at Alpha Beach in Lagos while swimming with his friends.

    The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in Lagos state, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, who confirmed the incident on Tuesday, said that his body was yet to be recovered as at press time.

    Hundeyin said that the senior brother of the deceased, one Ayorinde Olubusade, reported the case to the Ilasan police division on Tuesday at about 2.20 p.m.

    He said that information received from Ayorinde revealed that on Monday, at about 5.17 p.m. his younger brother, Olamilekan, of Igbo Efon area, Ilasan of Lagos went to Alpha Beach, Igbo Efon to swim with his friends.

    “Ayorinde said his younger brother allegedly drowned in the beach. All efforts to trace him proved abortive.

    “Based on the report, the police visited the scene and were photographed by a team of Marine and conventional Policemen.

    “Meanwhile, search and rescue operations by Marine police and local divers, with a view to recovering the body are being intensified. Investigation is in progress,” he said.

    In another development, a 42-year-old pedestrian, Kareem Moshood, was allegedly knocked down on Monday while crossing the expressway at Agogo Igbala bus stop, on the Lagos-Badagry expressway, Morogbo.

    The police image maker said that as a result of the accident, the victim, who lived at No. 20, Kolawole Street, Pako Ketu, died on the spot.
    Hundeyin said that a team of traffic police men visited the scene and photographed the spot, while the corpse was removed and deposited at a public mortuary for an autopsy.
    He said that the driver of the Toyota Highlander SUV with registration number. KRD 711 FX, one Abiodun Rasheed had been detained over the incident, while investigation was ongoing.

    APM Terminal’s security man rescues two drowning fishermen

    A security guard of APM Terminals Apapa, Mr Lucky Edafe, has rescued two fishermen who were about drowning as their boat capsized.

    The Terminal Manager, Mr Steen Knudsen, stated on Sunday in Lagos that the boat capsized due to rough tide.

    The tide washed the boat to the Apapa berth where the fishermen hung unto the jetty fenders, calling for help.

    Knudsen noted that Edafe, a security man at the terminal, sighted the fishermen and was able to rescue them with the help of their paddles in a heroic act.

    “This week we are celebrating our security guard, Mr Lucky Edafe, who displayed outstanding commitment to his duties in rescuing two fishermen who were in danger and were about drowning as their boat capsized.

    “The two fishermen were full of gratitude, and the Port Police Command full of praises for the great feat at rescuing the fishermen.

    “Edafe displayed an exceptional performance outside his core responsibilities and was granted a Spot Award,’’ Knudsen stated.

    He noted that APM Terminal regularly gave “On-The-Spot’’ awards to employees for their ability to exhibit and demonstrate Maersk behaviours.

    “Edafe is a shining example of our core value of constant care. All employees are expected to not only look out for one another, but also to look out for everyone on our terminal.

    “We are proud that in a challenging moment when the fishermen needed help, Edafe rose to the occasion,’’ he stated.

    Tears flowed as three siblings of same parents got drowned in a river at Gaduwa Kazamaki Fulani Settlement of Guri local government of Jigawa state.

    The siblings were declaredd missing after they went out with their family’s camels for grazing.

    They reportedly went to a river located at Kazamaki Village where they were drowned while attempting to swim.

    It was difficult to console their parents as they cried out their eyes as the kids were fished out of the river.

    Confirming the incident the Jigawa state commissioner of police CP Aliyu Sale Tafida said, the command through its police Division in Guri local government received a report of the missing children on 20/1/2022.

    The commissioner who spoke through the spokesperson of the command ASP Lawan Shiisu Adam said, after receiving the report a police team was mobilised in collaboration with some good Samaritans in the community who eventually succeeded in recovering of their bodies in the stream.

    He explained that, their corpses were removed from the river and taken to Hadejia General hospital where they were confirmed dead by a medical doctor.

    ASP Shisu named the deceased to include Musa Ahmad ‘m’ age 12yrs, Yusuf Ahmad ‘m’ age 11 yrs, and Alkasim Muhammad ‘m’ age 14yrs all of Kazamaki Fulani Settlement Guri LGA.

    “Preliminary investigation revealed that no foul play was Suspected in the incident, however the corpses were released to their relatives for burial according to Islamic rites” ASP stated

    In a similar tragic incident a three year old child named Aminu Bukar of Dolen Zugo Village of Guri local government was reported missing on 18/01/2022.

    The police spokesperson ASP Shisu stated that, upon receiving the
    report, a team of Policemen swung into action, who were able to find the body of Aminu at Tudun Mai Jambo Bush, about 1 km away from the town.

    Two teenagers drown in a pond in Kano

    Two teenagers have been confirmed dead after drowning inside a pond in Fako village, Minjibir Local Government Area of Kano State.

    Sources in the area said the teenagers went swimming in the pond when the incident happened. The Council Chairman, Sale Ado-Minjibir confirmed the incident to newsmen in the state on Thursday.

    Ado-Minjibir in a statement by the council’s information officer, Tasi’u Yahaya identified the children as Uzaifa Yusufa and Buhari Abdulwahab who were below 15 years of age.

    He advised parents to keep close monitor vigilance on the whereabouts of their children particularly preventing them from going to the pond to swim in order to avert the reoccurrence of such ugly incidence.

    “The children drowned when they went swimming in the pond which children in the area are fond of doing during this rainy season.

    “We urge the parents to be vigilant and ensure their wards don’t go to such places to avoid reoccurrence of such ugly incidence,” Ado-Minjibir however noted.

    Delta final year student drowns in hotel pool few weeks to graduation

    A final year Law student at the Delta State University (DELSU), Oleh Campus, identified as Jeffery Tenumah Omatseye, last Friday, drowned in a swimming pool.

    The incident was said to have happened at a hotel located in nearby Irri community, in Isoko South council area of the state.

    The deceased popularly known as Jephizzy, who has a twin sister, was said to have participated actively in the recent #EndSARS protests.

    Following the death, students from the Faculty of Law reportedly held a candlelight procession for the repose of the deceased.

    Meanwhile, President of the Student Union Government of DELSU, Oleh campus, O. Innocent, has called for investigation into the incident.

    According to him, the explanation so far given by the management of the hotel and the Police were contradictory.

    He argued that Omatseye, being an Ijaw, who are noted for their swimming skills, could not have drowned in a two-feet swimming pool.

    “We want to know how our colleague died. Jeffery was to graduate in a few weeks’ time, but suddenly lost his life in a hotel swimming pool.

    “All students should stay away from that hotel,” he warned.

    A colleague of the deceased who is also a 500-level law student of the varsity, Emeni Fidel, demanded justice for the dead.

    “Jeffery was a friend and was popular among the students. The circumstances surrounding his death are not known, which is why justice must be done,” he stated.

    The Delta State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Onome Onovwakpoyeya, who confirmed the incident, said Jeffery was confirmed dead at a hospital.

    Akwa Ibom Police Command on Wednesday confirmed the drowning of three children of police officers in a pool of water at Eket barracks.

    Speaking to newsmen, SP Odiko Macdon, Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in the state, described the incident as “painful and shocking.”

    He said that the Commissioner of Police in the state, Amiengheme Andrew, received the news of the sad incident with rude shock and disbelief.

    “The three of them were children of two serving police inspectors in Eket division, we commiserate with the families, it is indeed painful.

    “We understand that the pool of water is used for erosion control, it is more painful because this is preventable,” he said.

    He urged policemen residing in barracks to be more vigilant to avoid tragic occurrences, saying, “We should keep an eye on the welfare of our family members, they are the reason we work.”

    However, the pool has been cordoned off to avoid further incidents.

    A bereaved family member, who pleaded anonymity, told NAN that the incident occurred on Tuesday and that the children were aged between 5 and 7.
