DESOPADEC continues its drug free campaign to Effurun market (Photos)

The Community Development and Public Enlightenment Department (CDPE) of Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission, DESOPADEC, yesterday 30th August, 2025 as part of efforts to combat substance abuse and addiction among residents, traders and students, extended its anti-drug abuse campaign to the Effurun Market in Uvwie Local Government Area of Delta State.

The campaign saw a large turnout of market traders and residents with the DESOPADEC team engaging the audience with informative presentations on the harmful effects of drug abuse on both individuals and the larger community.

Speaking at the event, the Head of Community Development and Public Enlightenment Department, Mrs. Chinenye Ezonfade emphasized the importance of prevention and education.

“Drug abuse not only destroys the lives of those who partake in it but also affects families, communities and the State at large. We are here today to share vital information and resources to help prevent the spread of this menace,” she said.

While appealing for continued community involvement in the fight against drug abuse and reminding parents of the role of the children, Mrs. Ezonfade said, “We cannot afford to be passive in this battle. Every one of us has a part to play. Our children are our pride and the future leaders of tomorrow. If they are destroyed by drugs, who will take over from today’s leaders?”

The market environment with its high foot traffic, served as an ideal setting to spread the message, reaching individuals from different walks of life including young traders, shop owners, and customers. The awareness drive included distribution of pamphlets, posters, and other educational materials outlining the signs of drug abuse.

Speaking, a Principal staff of the Department, Mr. Bobby Akuirema informed the gathering that the misuse of drugs has created many problems in our society, endangering the lives of young people and proffered solutions.

“To address this issue, DESOPADEC, led by the Chairman, Olorogun John Obukowho Nani and the MD/CEO, Chief Festus Ochonogor in collaboration with His Excellency, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has launched a campaign to save children already involved in drug abuse and to educate parents—many of whom are busy with their businesses in the market—on the importance of monitoring their children closely,” said Mr. Akuirema.

Another staff, Mr. James Adjevabor explained that youths abuse drugs for different reasons such as lack of parental care, absence of love and friendship at home, peer pressure, and bullying and to address these problems, he advised parents to not only spend quality time with their children but to build trust and communicate openly with their children, amongst other reasons.

Explaining the role of the community in curbing drug abuse further, he said, “When we work together as a community, we can make a significant impact on reducing the prevalence of substance abuse. Awareness campaigns like this are crucial in giving people the tools they need to avoid drugs and seek help when necessary.”

The sensitization also included a Q & A session where attendees had the opportunity to ask questions and get clarity on drug abuse issues. Several traders such as Madam Antonia Oghoro, Faustina Ndidi, Isaac Becky, Isiwa Nyama amongst several others shared their concerns about the impact of drug abuse on youths in the market, urging the urgent need for more outreach programs and expressing their gratitude to DESOPADEC for the timely initiative.

DESOPADEC plans to extend the campaign to other markets across the State with the goal of reaching even more individuals and fostering a drug-free community.

4 out of 10 undergraduates are into drugs – NDLEA

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has disclosed that about 4 out of 10 university undergraduates in the country are into drugs.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Oyo State NDLEA Commander, Olayinke Joe-Fadile disclosed this in Ibadan on Wednesday during the command’s rally in commemoration of the 2025 International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.

The day, also known as World Drug Day, is marked every June 26 to strengthen action and cooperation in achieving a world free of drug abuse.

The theme of the 2025 celebration is “The Evidence is Clear: Invest in Prevention, Break the Circle”.

According to Joe-Fadile, the menace of drug abuse is getting more worrisome as statistics have shown that younger people are getting exposed to drug use and offences.

“We are intensifying efforts on our campaigns across primary and secondary schools, including tertiary institutions in the state, because the demography of people using drugs is getting lower by the day.

“We now can see children from age nine upward taking drugs. The statistics are also showing us that about four to five out of 10 undergraduates are into drugs,” he said.

The NDLEA boss said that the 2025 campaign highlights the need for coordinated long-term action to break the cycle of organised crime and drug trafficking.

This, he said, could be achieved by addressing root causes, investing in prevention and building stronger health, education and social systems.

He noted that the command had, in the last few months, arrested 150 persons for drug-related offences and burnt about 11 tons of different kinds of seized illicit substances.

Joe-Fadile cautioned that drug users could have their internal organs destroyed, leading to a slow and painful death.

He warned that the NDLEA would not relent in its efforts to ensure that manufacturers, producers, and sellers of illicit drugs in Oyo State face the full wrath of the law.

“We believe that every day is for the thieves, but one day is for the owner. NDLEA will soon knock at the doors of drug peddlers to pick them for prosecution and necessary legal trials.

He said that most traditional leaders in the state had been inducted as NDLEA ambassadors to carry out campaigns against drug abuse among their constituents.

“We have also discovered that many people respect and listen to religious leaders, hence we are collaborating with them, using their platforms to reach out to many people,” he said.

Participants at the rally include officers from the Nigerian Army, Federal Road Safety Corps and the Nigeria Customs Service.

In addition are the Nigeria Immigration Service and the National Youth Service Corps, among others.

Drug abuse crisis demands focused intervention – Nwoko

Meanwhile, Senator Ned Nwoko (APC-Delta) and member Senate Committee on Drugs and Narcotics says drug abuse is a crisis that demands dedicated infrastructure and focused intervention.

Nwoko said this in a statement on Wednesday in Abuja.

He noted that there was a clear gap in the system that the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) alone could not fill, adding that this was glaring in the nation’s current drug response.

”The NDLEA’s focus is largely enforcement and interdiction. But what about sustained rehabilitation, grassroots awareness, school outreach, and long term reintegration?”, he said.

The lawmaker said that it was in view of this, that he proposed a Bill for the Establishment of a National Centre for Substance Abuse Management in Ndemili, Delta, adding that the Bill was currently before the senate.

He added that during his recent visit to his constituency, a student-led NGO approached him with a draft bill on the same issue.

“This is proof that the need is urgent and widely recognised,” he said.

Nwoko also commended his colleague Sen. Rufai Hanga, whom he said sponsored a “Bill for an Act to Establish the National Institute on Drug Awareness and Rehabilitation”.

He said that a one-day public hearing organised by the Senate Committee on Drugs and Narcotics was held recently on the Bill.

“I commend my distinguished colleague Sen. Rufai Hanga, for sponsoring this timely bill, and I appreciate every stakeholder who spoke in favor.

“We must act with clarity and courage. Drug abuse rehabilitation requires its own institutional framework,” Nwoko stressed.

A 28-year-old Kenyan woman, Jane Njeri Muigai, has been arrested after authorities discovered nearly 300 grams of cocaine concealed in her private part during a routine security operation targeting drug trafficking routes.

The shocking discovery was made on Friday, April 18, 2025, during a search of a Nairobi-bound bus intercepted at a checkpoint along the Moyale-Isiolo highway.

According to a statement issued by Kenya’s Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the arrest was the result of a multi-agency operation aimed at curbing the illegal drug trade along the Northern Frontier corridor.

Upon stopping the bus, officers observed suspicious behaviour from the suspect, who appeared visibly uneasy. Female officers conducted a detailed body search and uncovered 294 grams of cocaine carefully concealed in her private area,” the DCI revealed.

*Drugs will shatter your dreams, PRIMORG, NDLEA warn students, youths*

Students and young Nigerians have been advised to flee from drugs if they desire to attain their potential and become responsible and successful adults.

The advice was handed down to Senior School students at Goshen High School, Kubwa, FCT, during a Safe Without Drugs (SWiD) Initiative Campaign in secondary schools by the Progressive Impact Organization for Community Development, PRIMORG, on Friday, 7th February 2025.

PRIMORG uses the project to promote Drugs Demand Reduction in collaboration with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA.

“Drug abuse is a grave issue. It damages your future, destroys your destiny, and makes you a burden and dependent on people associated with you. The fact is that you will not attain your full potential in life if you are hooked on drugs.

“Therefore, as a student, you must run away from drug abuse or the use of any psychoactive substance – as it is wreaking people’s lives and homes and making a lot of individuals useless. We don’t want you to touch drugs because it destroys one’s future,” said the Executive Director of the Progressive Impact Organisation for Community Development, PRIMORG, Okhiria Agbonsuremi.

He told the senior secondary 1, 2, and 3 students who were in attendance that the essence of the advocacy is to sensitize them to the dangers drug abuse can cause and equip them with skills to be able to repel any form of substance abuse.

Agbonsuremi lauded the school management for cooperation and the students for their rapt attention during the enlightenment exercise and interest in joining an anti-drugs club formed in the course of the programme while revealing PRIMORG’s readiness to partner with more schools, parents, and organizations to expose early the menace of drug abuse to students and youths.

“The high point of today’s event is setting up the SWiD Club to sustain the messages in schools. We (PRIMORG) are always glad to partner with more schools, parents, teachers, and organizations to reach more students before they leave secondary school and enter the more complicated world.

On his part, NDLEA’s Assistant Superintendent of Narcotics, Ahmed Abdulfatai Ismail, cautioned the students against accepting drugs from anybody; and avoid secondary smoking.

Ismail taught the students coping skills when they find themselves in environments where people are using drugs and tasked parents to pay attention to the contents their wards are exposed to on the internet and social media.

He stressed that preventing young people from becoming drug abusers remains a better and easier way out for any society, hence the reason NDLEA is partnering with PRIMORG and other organizations to raise awareness and reach out to students early to stop them from being destroyed.

“Do not use drugs or accept them from anybody, and when you stay around in a place where people are smoking, you are as good as the person smoking – so you must stay away from secondary smoking.

“For parents and guidance, you have to talk to your wards about drugs, don’t think they don’t know, and limit them from visiting unhealthy websites. I tell you that prevention is always healthier and better than cure,” Ismail warned.

Towing the same line, the National Coordinator, Re-Orientation Advocates of Nigeria, Charles Olufemi’s message to the students was, “Drugs can end all your dreams.”

His words: “There is no reason for anybody to play with drug abuse. People go into drugs because of their level of knowledge, and I can tell you that free drugs can end your dream.

“Don’t be excited about those musicians you see smoking; in a few years, you will find out that they are no more, and what has happened is that the problems associated with smoking break them down – so do not emulate them.

“Drugs cannot change your lives and situations that you encounter. It doesn’t resolve emotional problems or academic or marital issues. So, nothing should take you into drug abuse because drugs are dangerous. Drugs end lives and dreams,” Olufemi cautioned.
