Panic in Anambra Assembly as armed men try to whisk away member-elect

There was panic at the Anambra State House of Assembly as four armed men, suspected to be operatives of the Directorate of Security Services (DSS), tried to whisk away member-elect for Nnewi North constituency, Mr Onyekachukwu Ike.

The armed men drove into the Assembly complex in three vehicles and grabbed the member-elect after he participated in a valedictory thanksgiving mass for the seventh Assembly.

They forced the member-elect into their vehicle and were trying to drive out of the Assembly complex when security personnel quickly locked the exit gate.

The Acting Clerk of the Assembly, Mrs Esther Aneto, and other senior staff lamented that the suspected DSS operatives did not inform them or even the Police personnel at the Assembly before trying to whisk Ike away.

One of the suspected DSS operatives, however, explained that they had a court order to arrest the member-elect.

It took the intervention of the Speaker, Dr Uche Okafor, and the Deputy Governor, Dr Onyeka Ibezim, who came to represent the Governor at the Valedictory session of the seventh Assembly, before the member-elect was released.

President Tinubu directs DSS to immediately vacate EFCC office

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed the Department of State Security Service (DSS) to immediately vacate the office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in Ikoyi, Lagos.

The president gave the order in a statement signed by Mr Tunde Rahman, Office of the President, on Tuesday in Abuja.

Rahman said the president gave the directive when it was brought to the notice of the president that DSS officials stormed the EFCC office located on Awolowo Road, Ikoyi, Lagos on Tuesday, preventing officials of the anti-graft agency from accessing their work place.

The president said if there were issues between the two important agencies of government, they would be resolved amicably.

Confusion as EFCC, DSS officials clash over Lagos office building

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has condemned the Tuesday siege by the Department of State Services (DSS) on its Lagos office, describing it as shocking.

The DSS operatives reportedly prevented officials of the anti-graft agency from gaining access to their office in Ikoyi, Lagos.

This was however denied by the DSS, claiming that the incident never happened.

The two organisations have shared the office which was the headquarters of the defunct National Security Organisation, the precursor to DSS, for about 20 years.

There is said to be ongoing discussion between the two federal agencies over the ownership of the building.

EFCC Spokesperson, Wilson Uwujaren, while condemning the action in a statement on Tuesday in Abuja, said it had wider implications for the fight against economic and financial crimes.

Uwujaren said that the EFCC was shocked by the action of the agents of DSS who barricaded the entrance into its Ikoyi’s office with armoured personnel carriers.

“This development is strange to the commission given that we have cohabited with the DSS in that facility for 20 years without incident.

“By denying operatives access to their offices, the commission’s operations at its largest hub with over 500 personnel, hundreds of exhibits, and many suspects in detention have been disrupted.

“Cases scheduled for court hearing today have been aborted, while many suspects who had been invited for questioning are left unattended.

“Even more alarming is that suspects in detention are left without care with grave implications for their rights as inmates,” he said.

Uwujaren said that the action was in conflict with the efforts being made to tackl economic and financial crimes.

“The siege is inconsistent with the synergy expected of agencies working for the same government and nation, especially when there are ongoing discussions on the matter,” he said.

Meanwhile, Dr Peter Afunaya, the Spokesman of the DSS, has denied any rift with the EFCC.

Afunaya in a statement on the issue, said there was no rivalry between the service and the EFCC over and about anything.

He enjoined the media not to create any imaginary rivalry, adding that the two organisations were partners working for the good of the nation.

“It is not correct that the DSS barricaded EFCC from entering its office. No. It is not true.

“The Service is only occupying its own facility where it is carrying out its official and statutory responsibility.

“By the way, there is no controversy over No 15A Awolowo Road as being insinuated by the report.

“Did the EFCC tell you it is contesting the ownership of the building? I will be surprised if it is contesting the ownership,” he said.

According to him, Awolowo Road was NSO headquarters and the DSS started from there.

JUST IN: DSS raises alarm over plans to disrupt May 29 inauguration

Ahead of the May 29, inauguration, the Department of State Services(DSS), have again raised the alarm of plans by subversive elements to disrupt the programmes in parts of the country.

DSS Public Relations Officer, Peter Afunanya, in a statement issued on Thursday in Abuja, said the motive of those planning such act is to undermine security agencies’ efforts at ensuring peaceful ceremonies as well as creating panic and fear among members of the public.

The secret police, however, called on Nigerians to remain calm and remain law abiding as security agencies are on top of the situation.

    The statement reads:
“It would be recalled that the Secretary to the Government of the Federation and Chairman of the Presidential Transition Council (PTC) on 18th May, 2023 held a World Press Conference during which he announced activities for the Presidential inauguration.

“The major highlight of the activities is the swearing-in of the President on 29th May, 2023 in Abuja. On the same date, new Governors will also be inaugurated in most of the States.

“The Service is, however, aware of plans by subversive elements to disrupt the programmes in parts of the country. The aim is to undermine security agencies’ efforts at ensuring peaceful ceremonies as well as creating panic and fear among members of the public.

“Based on these, citizens, the media and Civil Society Organisations are advised to adhere strictly to security and civil protocols during the events. They are also urged to shun fake news, false alarms, skewed reportage/narratives and sensationalism that may likely inflame division, tension and violence prior to and after the exercises.

“This is more so that such undesirable acts will serve no purpose other than destroying national unity and cohesion. Additionally, all unauthorised (and unaccredited) persons are warned to stay away from restricted and certain designated areas at the event venues.

“The Service reiterates its earlier call for the populace to remain calm and law abiding. Meanwhile, it will continue to sustain collaboration with sister agencies to ensure successful inaugurations.”

DSS, Police, Military raid terrorists’ hideout in Kano Kaduna, three suspects arrested

The Department of State Services (DSS), Nigerian Army and the Police Force raided terrorists’ hideouts, in parts of Kaduna and Kano states.

Peter Afunanya, the Spokesman of the Service, made the disclosure to newsmen in Abuja, yesterday.

He said during the raid in Kaduna, the terrorists deployed Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) against the security forces.

According to him, “one of the terrorists, who wore a suicide jacket, blew himself up, while three suspects were arrested. Items recovered, following defusing of other IEDs, were two suicide jackets, one AK-47 rifle, a pistol and one laptop.”

In Kano State, Afunanya said two suspects were arrested. Recovered items included a pistol, 11 mobile phones, two hand grenades, one fully charged AK-47 magazine, two empty AK-47 magazines, one Peugeot 307 car and an ID card belonging to a suspect that escaped.

He said: “Intelligence had earlier revealed that high profile terrorist targets were regrouping in the North West to carry out dastardly acts in the area. Notably, steady military operations in the North East have necessitated the insurgents’ escape to the North West and Central zones, where they are establishing active cells.”

He added: “The Service commends the Nigerian military and police for their resilience and support, which led to the success of the operation. The sustained interagency synergy is, without doubt, a game changer in the counter-threat actions.

“Also, the Service wishes to state and very clearly, that it will continue to collaborate with sister agencies to rid the nation of criminal elements, particularly, at this transition period and even beyond. This is more so that certain persons are desperate to undermine the process. But the Service will resist this and ensure a seamless event.”

Meanwhile, Katsina State Police Command said it neutralised a suspected terrorist and foiled the abduction of five women at Bajinawa village, in Dutsinma Local Council.

According to a statement issued by the command’s spokesperson, CSP Gambo Isah, the incident occurred on Sunday night, when terrorists on motorcycles attacked the village.

Isah said the assailants were accosted by a group of policemen. A gunfire exchange ensued and one of the terrorists was killed.

He added that an AK-47 rifle was recovered.

HORRIFIC! Man blows self up to evade arrest

There was confusion in Kaduna when a man took his life by blowing himself up with an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) in order to evade arrest.

The incident occurred at Ibrahim Haske Road in the KEKE community of Kaduna Millennium City, on Monday morning.

According to eyewitnesses, gunshots were heard around 1 am when officials from the Department of State Services (DSS), soldiers, and the police arrived at the suspect’s residence.
gathered that when the man realised he was surrounded, he resorted to using explosives to end his life.

He was said to have exchanged gunfire with the security operatives before taking his life.

A security source revealed that an AK-47 rifle was discovered inside the house, along with two other IEDs that were later defused by the Anti-bomb squad.

“The man’s body was mutilated due to the explosive device, while his wife and children were taken away by DSS officials in their vehicles,” the source said.

A community leader, Malam Samaila, confirmed the incident, noting that the security operatives had barricaded the street to prevent people from approaching the suspect’s house.

Samaila stated that it is likely that the security personnel had tracked down the suspect to his residence to arrest him.

However, realizing that escape was impossible, he decided to take his own life inside the house.

The operation was jointly conducted by the DSS, police, and soldiers, who arrived in Hilux trucks, Jeeps, and ambulances. They left the community at approximately noon.

The Kaduna State Police Command Public Relations Officer, DSP Jalige Mohammed, couldn’t be reached for comment as calls to his phone remain unanswered and is yet to reply to a text message sent to him over the man that blew himself up and caused not small pandemonium.
