An Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) member responsible for the blast near the Palace of Ohinoyi of Ebiraland in Okene, Kogi State and the Kuje prison attack  has been arrested by men of the Department of State Services (DSS).

The Vehicle-Borne Improvised Explosive Device (VBIED) attack occurred on 29th December during the visit of President Muhammadu Buhari to commission some projects.

Acoording to a statement signed and released by Peter Afunanya , the Spokesman for the Department of State Services, Abdulmumin Ibrahim Otaru (a.k.a. Abu Mikdad) was fingered as the mastermind of the attacks.

Otaru, described as “a high commander” of the terrorist organization, either coordinated or was involved in several other attacks.

The DSS mentioned the 24th June, 2022, attack on Police Area Command in Eika-Ohizenyi, Okehi LGA of Kogi. Inspector Idris Musa was killed and two AK-47 rifles carted away.

Otaru participated in the 5th July, 2022 breach of the Kuje Medium Security Custodial Centre in Kuje Area Council, Abuja.

On 5th August, 2022, he took part in the attack on West African Ceramics Ltd (WACL) in Ajaokuta LGA, Kogi. Three Indians were kidnapped.

Five persons, including one Indian, two policemen and two drivers of the company were murdered. The captives were released on 31st August.

The security agency also announced the arrest of one of the ISWAP topshot’s associates, Saidu Suleiman on 3rd January.

Afunanya disclosed that Otaru sustained a gunshot injury on his left foot while attempting to escape and is receiving treatment at a health facility.

“Otaru operated terrorist cells in and around Kogi State. Similarly, he and his gang had staged several kidnap operations in Kogi and Ondo States”, the PRO added.

The DSS has now appealed to the citizens of the country to always cooperate with the agency by being helpful with information  in their quest to rid the country of criminal activities,

Recall that the Kogi government  accused disgruntled politicians of being responsible in the explosion where few persons lost their lives.

Nigerian Army rescues abducted female soldier in Enugu

A kidnapped female soldier has been rescued by the combo of the Nigerian Army and the Department of State Services (DSS) on Thursday.

The female Lieutenant p.p Johnson was abducted by unknown gunmen few days ago.

The Army officer had been moved to a forest bordering Enugu State and Ihube Okigwe Local Government Area in Imo State.

The gang stripped the officer, from Abia State, and made a video of her on 26th of December, Boxing Day.

The voice behind the recording said the location was along Enugu highway which links Port Harcourt, the Rivers capital.

Recall that Johnson was kidnapped when she travelled to her hometown for Christmas Day celebration.

The victim passed out on December 17 after completing the Direct Short Service Course.

It was gathered that the Army leadership quickly mobilized its men to rescue her after the news of her disappearance surfaced.

It is suspected that the recording, which circulated on the internet, might have assisted security agencies in tracking the abductors.

Many killed, few injured as Military, Police raid IPOB hideouts

A combined effort of the Military and other security operatives bombarded the camp and hideouts of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) in the Southeastern states of Enugu and neighbours Ebonyi states.

The security combo of the Department of State Security Services, the Police, the Air Force, and the Nigerian Army, engaged the IPOB soldiers in a gun battle during the two raids in Enugu and Ebonyi states leading to many killed while some sustained various degrees of injuries.

According to the  Director of Army Public Relations, Brigadier General, Onyema Nwachukwu, on Wednesday said some members of the group were killed while others fled with gunshot injuries.

He listed pump-action guns, grenades, military camouflage, and police uniform, among others, as items recovered after the operation in Ebonyi.

The statement partly read, “Troops of 82 Division, in conjunction with the Nigerian Air Force, Nigeria Police, and Department of State Services on Exercise Golden Dawn II on December 19, 2022, conducted joint raid operations at an IPOB/ESN camp located at Amagu village, Nkalaha community, Ishielu LGA of Ebonyi State.

“During the raid operations, the troops came into contact with members of the dissident group, resulting in an exchange of fire. In the encounter, the gallant troops neutralised some of the irredentists, while others took to their heels, abandoning the camp.

“On winning the firefight, troops recovered 102 rounds of 7.62mm special, 2 pump action guns, 5 locally made rifles, 1 roll of detonator 27, quantity 24 detonators, 33 electrical cables, quantity 12 of type 36 hand grenades, and 12 bags of substances suspected to be marijuana. Other items recovered include three motorcycles, two generators, one water pumping machine, military woodland camouflage, and a Nigerian police uniform.”

In Enugu, Onyema said troops arrested the community’s chief security officer for colluding with IPOB members.

“Troops on routine patrol in the Agubeji community in Enugu State have arrested a suspect, one Mr Martins Abogwu, for conniving with IPOB/ESN elements to unleash attacks on innocent citizens.

“The suspect, who claimed he is the Chief Security Officer of the community, is assisting in the preliminary investigations that followed and have led troops to their camp, where a shallow grave containing two decomposing bodies was uncovered. One of the corpses has been identified as a member of the local vigilante, who was kidnapped about a month ago.”

  • Emefiele: Don’t politicise security, DSS operations- Saraki cautions

Emefiele: Don’t politicise security, DSS operations- Saraki cautions

Former Senate President, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki has advised the security agencies in the country to be wary and avoid being manipulated by politicians as the 2023 Presidential elections get nearer.

Saraki in a statement from his Media Office in Abuja while reacting to the recent court case in which the Directorate of State Services (DSS) accused the Governor of Central Bank, Mr. Godwin Emefiele of terrorism and other sundry charges while seeking a court order for his arrest stated that what led to such an action by the secret service at this point needs further clarification so as not to create misunderstanding and wrong perception about the motive.

He added that without holding brief for the CBN governor who he believes should be able to defend himself as he is not above the law, his concern is that as a victim of a similar wrong and politically-motivated accusation, he felt that there were some clouds around the DSS court action coming two months to the general election, particularly at a time the apex bank introduced tough guidelines on the cashless regime and change of currency which could work against those who had planned to resort to vote-buying in the election.

“As somebody who had been wrongly accused of involvement in the Offa robbery by political opportunists and manipulators before their evil plots now begin to unravel in the court of law, I feel that a similar intrigue is being weaved by those who are bent on sabotaging the 2023 elections as the obvious outcome is not going their way.

“In this court case in which the CBN governor is being accused of terrorism through a suit which the Federal High Court has now described as frivolous and without concrete evidence, my position is not to support Emefiele but to support democracy which is being targeted by the plotters.

“With all the due respect that I have for the DSS as a very professional security agency, I still found it very difficult to understand what led to the charges, why concrete evidence that will enable the court to take a good decision was not provided and why the Department gave room for suspicion and speculations as the case file have gapping holes as noted by the Honourable Judge John Tsoho.

“One of the suspicions this case has raised is that it is part of a grand plot by those who want to undermine and sabotage the coming general election because their calculation on vote buying, rigging, and excessive use of money is falling apart. The new CBN regulation on a cashless regime in which individuals can only withdraw N100,000 a week and N20,000 per day is sure to frustrate the partisan fraudsters, the mischievous politicians and unpatriotic elements who aim to win the election at all costs even when they are being rejected at the polls.

“The CBN guidelines have derailed the plan of those who believe that they will not allow the ‘one man, one vote system’ in which the electorate freely choose their representatives in a fair and peaceful atmosphere. I urge the DSS, police, NSCDC, the military, and all security agencies to be wary of political manipulators, despots, and anarchists who may want to use the case to derail the free and fair election regime that the new Electoral Act, INEC and President Muhammadu Buhari have promised.

“These same undesirable elements in the political process have attempted to use the National Assembly to scuttle the electoral process by frustrating the provisions on electronic transmission of results, use of Biometric Voters Accreditation System (BVAS), the new guidelines on currency change and cash withdrawal. They failed. They have also put pressure on the presidency to reverse some of these innovations. They did not succeed. Now, they are resorting to the use of the judiciary.

“Their desperate resort to the manipulation of the judicial process and the use of security agencies who may be inadvertently lending support to the plot without knowing the full implication and ramifications should remind Nigerians of the antics of the Association for Better Nigeria (ABN) which was used by anti-democratic elements during the military transition programme in the early 90s.

“I hereby urge the security agencies to distance themselves from the anarchists and anti-democratic elements masquerading as democrats or political players. With the current situation in the country, all the citizens, national institutions, residents, and foreign friends of Nigeria should commit to the goal of having free, fair, peaceful, and credible polls in 2023. It is my prayer that next year’s election should provide a positive turning point for rebuilding, refocusing, resetting, redeeming, restructuring, repositioning, and revamping our country”, Saraki stated.

Just In: DSS nabs two alleged attackers of INEC offices in Imo

Two suspects who allegedly attacked Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) offices in Imo State, have been arrested by operatives of Department of State Services (DSS).

Speaking during a meeting with the Resident Electoral Commissioner, Prof Sylvia Uchenna Agu, DSS Director in Imo state, Wilcox Idaminabo also disclosed that the agency has dislodged camps at Orsu from where the hoodlums launch attacks.

The raids led to the arrest of a leader and financier of the hoodlums in Orsu. Idaminabo also said the hoodlums have relocated to Aku/Ihube axis along the Okigwe expressway.

He said: “We have continued to comb their camps and cells in Orsu, Njaba, Orlu and Okigwe.

“Our onslaught especially at Njaba led to the arrest of one Ejima who has been threatening to burn down the state and INEC offices.

“I am happy to announce that just last night (Tuesday) we apprehended him and he’s now in our custody.

“We also recovered a lot of arms, ammunition and charms from him.”

  • Court stops DSS from arresting CBN Gov, Godwin Emefiele

Court stops DSS from arresting CBN Gov, Godwin Emefiele

A federal high court sitting in Abuja has declined an application by the Department of State Services (DSS) to arrest and detain Godwin Emefiele, governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), TheCable reports.

In declining the motion ex parte — filed by an applicant in the absence of the respondent — Justice JT Tsoho, the chief judge, said the secret police did not provide any concrete evidence to substantiate its claims that Emefiele was involved in terrorism financing and economic crimes.

It was gathered that the judge said he should have been taken into confidence if there was any evidence to back the allegations in the application, marked FHC/ABJ/CS/2255/2022.

The court said such an application should have been accompanied with the presidential approval because of the grave implications for the Nigerian economy if the CBN governor is arrested and detained.

There are suggestions that the bid to arrest Emefiele might be political given the impact the redesign of the naira and limit on cash withdrawals might have on vote-buying in the 2023 elections.

A number of politicians have complained that the naira redesign is targeted at them but President Muhammadu Buhari has given his full backing to Emefiele over the policy.

A group of civil society organisations had raised the alarm that there was a plot to frame Emefiele for terrorism and remove him from office.

Meanwhile, DSS has warned Nigerians against being used to “undermine” its investigations.

In a statement issued by Peter Afunanya, DSS spokesperson, said the service will not be distracted by those seeking to use “propaganda” to undermine its lawful investigations.

Afunanya said one of the duties of the DSS is the “investigation of matters of national security dimension. It has always discharged this responsibility in the overall interest of Nigerian citizens”.

“As such, the Service will continue to disseminate actionable intelligence to the relevant authorities devoid of any sentiment,” the statement reads.

“While professionally discharging its mandate, the DSS pledges to remain focused and unbiased. It will not, by any means, succumb to propaganda, intimidation and the desperation of hirelings to undermine it.

“It will also not give room to the use of falsehood and deceit to misdirect public understanding and perceptions of issues of national importance.

“Given not to join issues, the Service warns those on a wild goose chase to be mindful of their actions. Similarly, it urges members of the public to disregard the vituperations and rantings of misguided elements and not allow themselves to be used as instruments of destabilisation.

“Notably, these elements should remember the famous axiom that ‘you will only deceive some people, some of the time, but not all people, all the time’.

“To put it succinctly, the Service will not be distracted by persons and/or groups from carrying out its duties to the Nation, citizens, and, President and Commander-in-Chief.”

Afunanya asked Nigerians to “avoid being used to thwart or undermine the Service and its lawful investigations as those who wish to act in the breach will be dealt with in accordance with the law”.

I was denied access to food, drugs in DSS Custody – Nnamdi Kanu

The embattled leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, (IPOB) Nnamdi Kanu, has revealed how the Department of State Services, (DSS) denied him access to medications for a week and more, adding that they also starved him of food for days.

Aloy Ejimakor, Kanu’s special counsel made this known via social media after his routine meeting with the IPOB leader at the DSS facility on Thursday.

Ejimakor  post reads: “Special Update: Today, I visited #MNK in the company of Prince Emma Kanu & Barr. Nnaemeka Ejiofor.

“He instructed me to make it public that he has not been given his drugs for the past 9 days & he has not eaten today because DSS says that they don’t have money to buy his food. #Sad.”

Ejimakor said the legal team has decided to give the DSS money to purchase food for Kanu.

“We have decided to take money to them as a deposit for his food. They won’t allow food brought by others, including family,” he told DAILY POST upon further inquiry.

NNPCL releases 1.9 billion litres of fuel to ease scarcity

Following a biting fuel scarcity that has enveloped many parts of the country for some time now, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited, NNPCL, has released 1.9 billion litres of petrol.

Recall that the Department of State Services, DSS, gave stakeholders in the oil sector ultimatum to make petrol available to Nigerians

DSS had given the NNPCL, oil marketers and other stakeholders a 48-hour ultimatum to make fuel available to Nigerians.

The 48 hour ultimatum  was contained in a briefing by the secret service spokesperson, Dr Peter Afunanya on Thursday.

In reaction to the ultimatum, the NNPC, Group Chief Executive Officer, Mallam Mele Kyari later announced the determination of the company to release the 1.9billion litres of fuel.

Kyari, who was represented by the NNPC Chief Financial Officer, Umar Ajiya assured Nigerians of the availability of Premium Motor Spirit, PMS.

“We have also directed operation team to engage in 24hours loading of PMS in the next couple of days and make sure some outlets operate 24hours without compromising security in order to bring quick relief to the people,” he stated.

Earlier, the Chief Executive, Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority, Engr. Farouk Ahmed pledged to collaborate with the NNPC and all stakeholders in order to make sure issues regarding supply of petroleum products are well addressed and to ensure smooth access.

Major stakeholders in the sector, the Depots and Petroleum Products Marketers Association of Nigeria (DAPPMAN), Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN), Nigerian Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO), Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) reiterated commitment to end the scarcity.

DSS, oil marketers set to clear petrol queues in 48 hours

The Department of State Devices (DSS), at a meeting with oil marketers and other stakeholders, has resolved to address the challenges of fuel scarcity and lingering queues at filling stations within 48 hours.

The Public Relations Officer of DSS, Dr. Peter Afunanya said this on Thursday in Abuja while briefing newsmen at the end of a meeting with petroleum distribution stakeholders.

He said the meeting was attended by representatives of the DSS, NNPC Limited, Major Oil Marketers Association of Nigeria, Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria and other stakeholders.

Afunanya said part of the resolutions reached was that the NNPC would provide fuel at normal and affordable official rate to all marketers.

He said the meeting also resolved that marketers who operate depot would work on a 24-hour basis to ensure adequate supply of fuel in the country.

According to him, it was also agreed that the DSS will ensure protection and provision of security to all marketers and their products across the country while moving oil products.

Afunanya said the DSS would take action against any filling station,  marketer or oil stakeholder that reneged on the agreement reached at the meeting.

He said the meeting was called to address the challenges of fuel scarcity, adding that the DSS would not sit back and watch the current scarcity persist despite availability of the product.

The DSS spokesman said the lingering fuel scarcity could lead to economic sabotage and threat to national security, if not properly handled.

He said plans were concluded by the DSS to raid all fuel stations and quizz any marketer found hoarding petroleum products.
