D’Tigers crash out of AfroBasket after defeat to Uganda

Nigeria’s D’Tigers on Tuesday ended their 2021 FIBA AfroBasket campaign on a sour note with a 68-80 loss to lowly-rated Uganda in Kigali, Rwanda.

The Nigerian senior men’s basketball team who were the competition’s champions in 2015 had qualified for this Qualification to Quarter-Finals fixture by finishing second from Group C.

But at the Kigali Arena on Tuesday against Uganda, who finished the group phase as Group D’s third-placed team, the Nigerian side simply failed to come to the party.

They lost 12-24 and 19-20 in the first two sets to trail by 13 points in the opening half.

After an 18-23 loss in the third quarter further worsened their situation to trail by 18 points, they fought back to win the fourth quarter 19-13.

This was however a little too late as Uganda went away with a 12-point lead to advance into the competition’s quarter-finals where they will face Cape Verde on Thursday.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Nigeria’s top performer in the game against Uganda was Uzodinma Utomi.

He scored 23 points, with three rebounds, two assists, one steal and two blocks.

Andrew Edogi also had seven rebounds, and Ikenna Ndugba six assists.

NAN reports that in other Qualification to Quarter-Finals fixtures played on Monday, Angola had beaten Egypt 70-62 to book a Wednesday quarter-final meeting with Senegal.

Also, Guinea beat hosts Rwanda 72-68 to advance to a quarter-final meeting with Cote d’Ivoire on Wednesday.

The last quarter-final fixture will hold on Thursday with Tunisia taking on the winners of the South Sudan versus Kenya fixture which was ongoing later on Tuesday.

The competition, which now holds every four years, will end on Sunday.

Afrobasket 2021: Mike Brown confident of victory against Uganda

Mike Brown, the Head Coach of the senior national men’s basketball team, D’tigers on Monday, said that he was banking on his team’s offensive prowess at the ongoing Afrobasket Championship in Kigali, Rwanda, to progress in the tournament.

He said this at a news conference held in Kigala monitored through the Afti asket.ckn website.

Brown was asked about his team’s readiness to make progress in the competition, which is currently at the quarterfinals stage.

He expressed optimisms that the offensive prowess of the team would play a major role in how far the team could go starting with their first game against Mali on Wednesday.

“We have to be able to shoot the ball and defend. We have to transition, run and shoot the ball from the three point line at a high level. If we do, we will give ourselves a chance,” Brown said.

With a complete set of new players at his disposal for the Afrobasket campaign, he said that D’Tigers will take it one game at a time as they continued to bond and improve as a team.

“One game at a time, we have a new team. None of these guys with the exception of one, played in the Afrobasket before (Jordan Ogundiran) and he did not really play.

Ibe Abu was here too, during the FIBA World Cup qualifiers, and he did not also play much.”

When asked how confident he was going into the tournament as a title challenger, he said that his philosophy was to take it one game at a time.

“We are young and we will just see whether we get better anytime we get on the floor and let’s see what happens.”

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalled that D’tiger’s edged pass Mali and Kenya in the group stage, but fell to Cote D’Ivoire in their final group game.

D’tigers would play against Uganda in the quarterfinals stage on Wednesday having placed second in their group encounters.

  • AfroBasket: D’Tigers lose to Cote d’Ivoire, fail to gain automatic quarter-final ticket

AfroBasket: D’Tigers lose to Cote d’Ivoire, fail to gain automatic quarter-final ticket

D’Tigers on Sunday lost 68-77 to group leaders Cote d’Ivoire to finish second and fail to secure Group C’s automatic quarter-final ticket at the ongoing 2021 FIBA AfroBasket in Rwanda.

They however have a second chance of qualification for the quarter-finals, with their final group position earning them a quarter-final qualifying fixture on Tuesday.

In their final group phase match, played at the City Arena in Kigali, the Nigerian senior men’s national team failed to raise their game and lost in three of the fixture’s four quarters.

With Cote d’Ivoire having won their first two games, just like Nigeria, and holding on tight to the group’s top spot, D’Tigers were aware only a win was needed.

It would earn them top-place finish and an automatic qualification to the quarter-finals which will begin on Wednesday.

D’Tigers defeated the Ivorians 83-66 on Sept. 6 of 2019 when they last met, in the classification round of the FIBA World Cup, but this counted for nothing on Sunday.

With Nigeria now parading a different set of players in Kigali, and not even the team which impressed at the Tokyo Olympics, D’Tigers have been largely unimpressive.

They lost the first quarter 11-20, won the second 23-19, and then failed to sustain the momentum by losing the last two quarters 13-15 and 21-23.

Benjamin Emelogu was again the team’s top performer, with 13 points, five rebounds and two steals, while Ikenna Ndugba also had six assists and two steals.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that D’Tigers had earlier beaten Mali 81-73 and Kenya 71-55, and they have now finished second in their group with five points from three matches.

Earlier in the day at the same venue, Kenya had beaten Mali 72-66 to finish third in the group.

NAN reports that Cote d’Ivoire advance to the quarter-finals automatically, while group runners-up Nigeria will face Group D’s third-placed team which could be Uganda.

Group D’s second-placed side, South Sudan, are already ahead of Uganda in their final group phase game.

If they hold on to second-place, they will then face Kenya in the final quarter-final qualifier on Tuesday.

D’Tigers beat Kenya’s senior men’s basketball team 71-55 on Friday in Kigali to set the stage for their final group game on Sunday at the 2021 FIBA AfroBasket in Rwanda.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Nigerian senior men’s basketball team won the first quarter 20-8, only to lose 14-18 in the second quarter.

They however resurged in the game’s second half, winning 15-13 and 22-16 in the third and fourth quarters respectively.

The Nigerian side, after having won their opening game, 81-73 against Mali on Wednesday, therefore lead Group C ahead of the group’s other match of the day.

Cote d’Ivoire, who beat Kenya 88-70 on Wednesday, were taking on Mali later on Friday.

NAN reports that Jeremiah Mordi was D’Tigers’ best performer on Friday against Kenya with 10 points and five rebounds, as well as two assists, one block and three steals.

Albert Odero of Kenya however outshone him in the match as overall best performer with 23 points and eight rebounds for his team.

Uzodinma Utomi had 17 points to emerge as Nigeria’s top scorer, while Stephen Domingo had eight rebounds and six assists.

NAN reports that D’Tigers now have to win against Cote d’Ivoire on Sunday to qualify directly for the quarter-finals.

A loss will see them finishing second to battle for qualification for the quarter-finals among the second-placed and third-placed teams.

2021 AfroBasket: D’Tigers beat Mali 81-73 in opening group game

Nigeria’s senior men’s basketball team, D’Tigers, on Wednesday beat Mali 81-73 in their opening match of the ongoing 2021 AfroBasket Championship in Kigali, Rwanda.

The Nigerian side, who were without most of their NBA stars paraded at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, got off to a good start winning the first quarter 28-12.

Captained by Stephen Domingo of Lake land Magic in the U.S G-League, the team showed glimpses of a side thirsty for a win with some quick fast-breaks.

The Malian team however rallied back in the second quarter to win it at 31-16, to go into half time just a point behind at 43-44.

On resumption of the third quarter, D’Tigers upped their game to win 27-10 for a 71-53 lead.

The Malians again showed they were no push-overs, coming strong in the fourth quarter to win it 20-10.

But it was a little too late for them as the D’Tigers won the highly entertaining encounter 81-73.

D’Tigers who are the number one-ranked team in Africa are in Group C alongside Mali, Kenya and Côte d’Ivoire.

Their next match is against Kenya on Friday at the same venue, the Kigali Arena.

The 2021 AfroBasket which started on Tuesday ends on Sept. 5.

  • D’Tigers will be ready for Mali by Wednesday at Afrobasket, Brown assures

D’Tigers will be ready for Mali by Wednesday at Afrobasket, Brown assures

D’Tigers will be ready to make their Nigerian compatriots proud by Wednesday when they take on Mali at the 2021 FIBA Afrobasket in Kigali, team head coach Mike Brown assured on Monday.

Admitting that the competition’s schedule for just immediately after the Summer Olympics has proved to be challenging for players and the coaching staff, Brown said he was sure of his players.

“They will be ready on time for the competition.
“It is just a bad timing for FIBA Africa to have the tournament, but FIBA decides to have the Asian and African games at the same time as the Olympics, and NBA players cannot participate in both because that is the rule,” the coach said.

He however explained why a lot of the regular faces were missing on the Nigerian senior men’s national team roster.

“It’s been a long summer for the players. They came to camp on June 20, went through the Olympics process and asking them to come here to Kigali in Rwanda will be ridiculous.

“It has been a long summer for everybody, including the coaches, and on top of that the camp right now is at the same time when a lot of training camps are happening.”

Brown disclosed that many of the players who participated during the Afrobasket qualifiers, as well as the Olympics camp, wanted to play.
He added that this was however impossible as holding training camps with their various clubs made it extremely difficult.

The coach however stated that if FIBA America and FIBA Europe thought it best to hold their competition next year, Africa should adopt the same strategy.

He added that this would help African teams to have a full complement of their stars around the world.

“So, it makes it difficult for us to have a competition like this. In fact, I think all competitions should happen next summer.”

Assessing the four new players who arrived in the camp from Nigeria on Saturday, Brown was hopeful they could get in shape before their first game on Wednesday.

“The new players here are really far behind in what we are trying to do and it is slowing us down a little bit, but we will see when we play in a couple of days,” he said.

  • Brown releases final 12-man list of D’Tigers for FIBA Afrobasket

Brown releases final 12-man list of D’Tigers for FIBA Afrobasket

The Head Coach of D’Tigers, Mike Brown, on Thursday released his final 12-man list for the 2021 FIBA Afrobasket which begins in Kigali, Rwanda next week.

Afolabi Oni, the Media Officer of the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF), in a statement explained that the list does not have Nigerians playing in the National Basketball Association (NBA).

He said this was because NBA League rules does not permit players to participate in a competition 60 days before the league’s resumption.

“This has made the coach to try other players by extending his invitation to players in Europe, the minor leagues in the U.S and the Nigerian league.”

Oni listed the players who made the final cut after days of preparations in the U.S to include Daniel Utomi, who plays Vichy Clermont in France, and Ikenna Ndugba.

“The list also has Emmanuel Omogbo of Apoel BC of Cyprus, and Benjamin Emegolu (Rouen Basket Metrople, France), as well as TK Edogi who is making a return to the team after missing out of the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.

“We also have on the list Stephen Domingo (Lake land Magic – G League, U.S), Jordan Ogundiran and Jeremiah Mordi.”

The NBBF spokesman added that the list also have Nigerian premier league stars such as Rivers Hoopers point guard Ikechukwu Benjamin and Koko Victor Anthony.

“The duo of Nwafor Celestine Joseph (Kano Pillars) and Agu Ibe Aguchi (Gombe Bulls) are on the list of invited players from the Nigerian league,” he said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the senior national men’s basketball team is expected to arrive in Kigali on Sunday ahead of their first game against Mali on Wednesday.

Nigeria, ranked number one team in Africa, will face Kenya and Côte d’Ivoire in the competition’s Group C hoping to improve on the silver medal won at the Tunisia 2017 edition.

Meanwhile, Ogoh Odaudu who led Rivers Hoopers to the inaugural edition of the Basketball Africa League (BAL) has also joined the team as one of the assistant coaches.

  • How Nigeria’s D’Tigers got kicked out of Tokyo 2020 Olympic basketball

How Nigeria’s D’Tigers got kicked out of Tokyo 2020 Olympic basketball

D’Tigers of Nigeria have been sent packing from the Tokyo 2020 men’s basketball event, after losing 71-80 to Italy in their last Group B.

The encounter held at the Saitama Super Arena Aomi Urban Sports on Saturday.

D’Tigers had lost 67-84 in their opening game of the group, before losing 92-99 narrowly to Germany in their second match.

The Nigerians had started on the front foot by taking the first two points before the Italians rallied and began to dominate the game for 29-17 at the end of the first quarter.

Nigeria, however, pulled off a stunning comeback as the Italians struggled to keep up with the pace of the D’Tigers for a 40-39 at the end of the second quarter.

D’Tigers led 63-56 after three quarters, and even saw their lead increase before the fourth quarter resumed.

Italy’s Michele Vitali had drawn a technical for trying to slap the ball away before the start of the fourth quarter.

So, before the 10-minute clock even started, Nigeria’s seven-point lead increased to an eight-point edge.

However, the D’Tigers took their foot off the gas and did not score for nearly seven minutes from then on.

Nicolo Melli scored 15 points, Nico Mannion had 14 and Italy used a 14-0 run in the fourth quarter to rally and beat Nigeria 80-71 in the Group B finale for both teams.

Achille Polonara added 13, Simone Fontecchio scored 12 and Stefano Tonut finished with 10 for Italy (2-1).

Chimezie Metu scored 22 points and Jordan Nwora added 20, while Jahlil Okafor scored 14 points.

The Italians, who finished second in Group B behind Australia after Germany lost to Australia and will play in the quarterfinals against a yet-to-be-determined opponent on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Sunday Dare, has expressed his thanks and appreciation to the players and technical crew of Nigeria’s national men’s basketball team after the team’s campaign at the Olympic Games came to an end yesterday.

“My thanks and appreciations go to the players and coaching staff of the D’Tigers. They represented Nigeria impressively and we thank them for their resilience, efforts and their patriotic commitment.

“They came and gave a good account of themselves to the world that Nigeria will compete amongst the best basketball nations. And to Mike Brown and the coaching staff, thank you for building this team and your faith in the team. You have performed tremendously well and Nigerians thank you sincerely,” Dare said.

The Caretaker President of the Nigerian Basketball Federation (NBBF), Musa Kida, has also expressed his gratitude to the men’s national basketball team for representing Nigeria ‘very well’ at the ongoing Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

He said, “D’Tigers, it’s been such a long journey in such a short time. You have all done very well as athletes, coaches and technical staff within the context of challenges we had to overcome.

“As President of NBBF, I would like to personally say thanks to all of you for representing your country very well and assure you that Nigeria is proud of your efforts and staying power as a group.

“We need to stay together and continue building on what we have done here as African representatives. We shall definitely do better as we are stronger. Stay safe and strong guys,” he stated.

  • Tokyo Olympics: Basketball fans express disappointment with France’s victory over D’Tigress

Tokyo Olympics: Basketball fans express disappointment with France’s victory over D’Tigress

Some basketball fans have decried the poor performance of Nigeria’s senior national women’s team, D’Tigress, for losing to the French National team, 87-62, at the basketball event of the Tokyo Olympics.

Speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos, the sports fans described the match as a total whitewash of the D’tigress, expressing doubts in the team’s capabilities to go far.

Femi Adefeso, a Sports Pundit, told NAN that he was surprised at the performance especially if he were to judge how the team responded well against U.S.

“We did not play well today; it was a total all round poor performance as they were overwhelmed in all quarters of the game.

“ The players did not raise their game as expected; they looked so perplexed and perhaps, there is more to what we don’t know.

“It looks like a psychological problem and I hope it is not what will deter them from doing well against Japan,’’ Adefeso said.

The Head Coach of Lagos Islanders, Seyi Ayodele, told NAN that he was surprised at the final scores, saying that it was not a good performance.

“This is not the results we are used to; as African champions, they have continued to impress their fans and also proved their qualities’ especially when they meet tough rated opposition.

“They did extraordinarily well and became the first African team to reach the quarterfinals in the last World Cup played in Turkey.

“Indeed, there seems to be something wrong. I hope they would be able to change that when they engage Japan in their final group match,’’ Ayodele said.

D’Tigress had lost their first game to the U.S., 81-72, who are arguably the strongest team in the group, and raised a lot of expectations on them to compete favourably against France.

Micheal Chukwudali a basketball fan, told NAN that the team played against a more determined French team.

He said that the French defence stood their ground and at the offensive ball play, they also made D’Tigress look ordinary.

“IT was not a good game for D’Tigress. They did well but the French team was just better in that game.

“Tactically, they were better in the offensive and defensive rebounds and at some point in the game, D’Tigress lost their confidence to fight back.

“Things like this can happen in games if facing more robust and tactically sound team I hope D’Tigress raise their game in their last group game against Japan,” Chukwudali said.

However, the result leaves D’Tigress in a very tough situation as they need to beat host country Japan with more than 15 points to advance to the quarterfinals.

The French team got to an early start in the match recording a 18-12 in the first quarter and 26-15 in the second quarter.

They kept the momentum and played with more tenacity outscoring D’Tigress, recording 23-15 in the third quarter, giving no room for D’tigress to come back.

Their three points shot was also a contributory to their victory as they recorded 11 out 26 while D’Tigress could only manage four out of 10.

The French team who lost 74-70 to Japan in their first game performed their best so far in the tournament especially with five star performances against D’tigress.

The French top performances in the game were Williams Gabby, Johanness Marine, Miyem Endene and Duchet Alix with each player recording 13 points while Sandrine Grade made 14 points.

The D’Tigress members were made to work hard for every shot counted, as Ezinne Kalu and Promise Amukamara could only manage 10 and 11 points respectively as best players on the team.
