    Three Dubai evacuees test positive for COVID-19

    Lagos State Government has announced that three of the 256 evacuees from Dubai have tested positive for coronavirus.

    This was made known by Lagos Commissioner Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, on Sunday morning on his official twitter handle.

    He said the positive evacuees have been moved to one of the isolation centres.

    The evacuees have been observing the mandatory 14-day isolation in Lagos, having arrived on May 6.

    He tweeted; “3 of the returnees recently evacuated from Dubai have tested positive for #COVID19 infection following #COVID19 test conducted on them.

    Those affected have been admitted to @followlasg #COVID19 care centre for appropriate treatment protocols.”

    Dubai returnee dies of COVID-19 in Lagos

    A 32-year-old man, who recently returned from Dubai, has died of coronavirus-related complications in Lagos State.

    The Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, made this known on Tuesday.

    Abayomi said the deceased returned from Dubai with severe underlying health conditions.

    Data released by the commissioner also showed that of the total 1,949 confirmed infections in Lagos, 1,395 are active cases, two evacuated, and 16 patients have been transferred to Ogun and Ondo.

    The commissioner also confirmed the 88 new cases of COVID-19 earlier announced by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control.

    He tweeted, “88 new cases of #COVID19 Infection were confirmed in Lagos. Total number of confirmed cases in Lagos is now 1,949.

    “Additional 33 #COVID-19 patients – nine females and 24 males have been discharged following full recovery. Total number of discharged #COVID19 patients in Lagos now stands at 502.

    “Another #COVID19 infection-related death involving 32-year-old, male has been recorded.

    The deceased recently returned from Dubai with severe underlying health conditions.

    “Following the evacuation of Nigerians in foreign countries, total COVID-19 related deaths in Lagos is now 34.

    “I urge Lagosians to remain committed to rules guiding COVID-19 infection prevention regardless of relaxation of lockdown.”

    Finally, Nigerians evacuated from Dubai arrive in Lagos

    The first batch of Nigerians evacuated from the United Arab Emirates have landed in Lagos.

    The returnees, who landed on Wednesday evening, landed at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, a few hours later than scheduled.

    They were earlier scheduled to return at 3pm, but had to return to Dubai after a woman, who gave birth on the aircraft developed complications.

    Geoffrey Onyeama, minister of foreign affairs, confirmed the development via his Twitter handle.

    “The Flight conveying 256 Nigerians evacuated from Dubai has landed Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos,” he wrote.

    The federal government had said all those for evacuation must test negative for COVID-19 before being allowed into the country, and will also be quarantined for 14 days on return to Nigeria.

    BREAKING: Chartered plane conveying Nigerians to Lagos from Dubai makes U-turn

    A chartered plane conveying Nigerian returnees from the United Arab Emirates has made a U-turn after a pregnant woman reportedly went into labour.

    The Chairman of the Nigerian in Diaspora Commission, Abike Dabiri-Erewa confirmed this to Channels TV.

    The plane, which was scheduled to arrive at 3 pm is now expected to land at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport at 7 pm.

    After weeks of delay, the first batch of Nigerians stuck abroad amid the coronavirus pandemic were expected in the country today.

    The Emirates flight is expected to be the first of at least two other flights scheduled to evacuate Nigerians within the next few days.

    According to the foreign ministry, discussions are ongoing with British Airways to airlift 300 Nigerians from London on Friday; arrangements are also being made with Ethiopian airlines for a flight from New York to Abuja next Monday.

    Over 4,000 Nigerians are waiting to be evacuated across the world back home, foreign affairs minister, Geoffrey Onyeama said on Monday.

    265 Nigerians to be evacuated from Dubai

    The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has said that an Emirates Airlines is scheduled to evacuate 265 Nigerians from Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE).

    The press statement was issued by the ministry’s spokesperson, Ferdinand Nwonye, on Tuesday, May 5.

    Evacuees are expected to arrive at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, May 6 at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Ikeja Lagos.

    Accommodations, according to the statement, for hotel accommodation in Lagos and Abuja have been put in place.

    “The hotels have been inspected by the following: Port Health Services, Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, Nigerian Centre for Disease Control, office of the National Security Adviser, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and IPC,” the statement read.

    It added that the “Ministry wishes to further inform that adequate arrangements for hotel accommodation in Lagos and Abuja have been made for the evacuation exercise.”

    The statement further stated that discussions with the British Airways through the British High Commission to evacuate 300 Nigerians from London on Friday, March 8, are still ongoing.

    The flight (BA 9155) is expected to depart London Heathrow Airport, Terminal 5, at 07:10 AM and arrive Lagos at 1:10 PM on the same day.

    Arrangements with Ethiopian Airways to evacuate Nigerians from New York to Abuja are also ongoing as evacuees are expected on Monday, May 11.

    The evacuation is as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic which has affected nearly 4 million people globally and caused over 200,000 deaths.

    The Operatives of Nigeria Immigration Service, Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Command in Lagos, has apprehended another nine girls being trafficked.

    The girls were on their way to Lebanon, Cairo, Dubai, and India on Ethiopian, Peace, Egypt and East Airlines.

    The service Public Relations Officer, DCI Sunday James, made this known in a statement on Saturday in Lagos.

    According to him, four of the girls claim to be traveling for employment without knowing their employers nor aware of the nature of the job they were going for.

    “This discovery was made after intensive interrogation by NIS officials,” he said.

    James said the shady journey was organised by agents who took advantage of the girls’ innocence and ignorance.

    He disclosed that two of the girls had earlier claimed to be going for a visit.

    “However, the two, later confessed they were going for hustle in Dubai. Another three, of the girls, claimed they were going to India for medical treatment without referrals.

    “When further asked the nature of sickness, they said yellow fever before they finally confessed to going for hustle in India,” he said.

    He said NIS refused their departure to save them from indignity to be faced from such journeys.

    “The Comptroller-General of NIS, Mr Muhammad Babandede, therefore, called on parents to be wary of juicy offers on their children, from family and non-family members to take the children abroad.

    “Most of these trips are deceitful, camouflaged with employment, studies or visit which may end up in exploitation or death. Operatives at the various entry and exit points will never permit them departure.

    “The NIS stepped-up clearance operation that is yielding positive result in the various arrest made at the borders of the country by NIS.”

    Another federal lawmaker dies in Dubai hospital

    Member representing Garki/Babura federal House of Representatives, Hon. Adamu Muhammad Fagen-Gowo, is dead.

    It was gathered that Fagen-Gowo died at the age of 74 in Dubai Hospital after battling leg problems, which he travelled for medical attention.

    His death was confirmed to newsmen by a relative of the deceased, Muhammad Had Inuwa(Walwala).

    He said the deceased left behind 10 children and two wives.

    The Federal lawmaker was elected as a member of Federal House of Representatives representing Garki/Babura in 2015 and was reelected for a second term in the 2019 general election.

    Also, the chairman of the All Progressives Party in Jigawa State, Habibu Sara, confirmed the development.

    His corpse would be transported back to Nigeria on Wednesday, January 1 and will be buried in Kano according to Islamic rites.

    Meanwhile, Governor Muhammad Badaru Abubakar, has condoled with family and the people of the constituency for death of the lawmaker.

    He said the death of the lawmaker is a great loss to Jigawa State and the people of Nigeria at large.

  • JUST IN: EFCC picks up ex-AGF Adoke on arrival from Dubai

    The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has picked up a former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr. Mohammed Adoke( SAN) upon arrival from Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

    Adoke is being probed alongside others over $1.06billion Malabu Oil Block ( OPL 245) deal.

    The ex-AGF was arrested in Abu Dhabi on November 11 after being watch-listed by the EFCC.
    But after a month in the custody of the International Police( INTERPOL) in the UAE, Adoke voluntarily offered to return to the country for interrogation by the EFCC and trial.

    Spotting a white Kaftan with a white cap, Adoke arrived at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja aboard Emirates flight (Boeing 777 -300ER) at 3.45pm.

    He was however picked up by EFCC operatives and transferred into a Toyota bus marked RBC 931 BV while reading a book he brought from Dubai.

  • Buhari leaves Nigeria for World Economic Forum in Jordan, Investment Summit in Dubai

    President Muhammadu Buhari departed Abuja Thursday for Amman to participate in the World Economic Forum on the Middle East and North Africa holding at the Dead Sea, Jordan.

    The president is participating at the event on the invitation the King of Jordan, Abdullah II bin Al-Hussein.

    Buhari will deliver an address at the opening of the plenary alongside Mr Al-Hussein and the United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres.

    He will later join world economic leaders in an informal gathering at the King Hussein Bin Talal Convention Centre.

    According to a statement by Presidential spokesman, Femi Adesina, on Thursday, the Nigerian leader will also hold bilateral meetings with some world leaders on the sidelines of the Forum.

    The statement said Buhari would depart Amman on Sunday for Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE), to participate in the ninth edition of the Annual Investment Meeting holding April 8-10.

    The President, according to Adesina, was invited by the UAE Vice-President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, Mohammed Bin Rachid Al Maktoum.

    He said the Nigerian President as Guest of Honour, will deliver the keynote address under the theme, “Mapping the Future of Foreign Direct Investment: Enriching World Economies through Digital Globalization.”

    According to the organisers, the meeting is “the largest gathering of corporate leaders, policymakers, businessmen, regional and international investors, entrepreneurs, leading academics and experts showcasing up-to-date information, strategies and knowledge on attracting FDI.”

    The meeting also seeks to explore investment opportunities in more than 140 countries, connect businesses and countries willing to engage in sustainable partnerships with investors.

    President Buhari will be accompanied on both trips by Governors Abubakar Badaru, Abiola Ajimobi and Yahaya Bello of Jigawa, Oyo and Kogi states respectively.

    Others on the entourage include the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama; the National Security Adviser, Mohammed Monguno, and other top government officials.

    2019: Atiku says security checks aimed at intimidating him

    Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate in the 2019 elections has said security checks he was made to pass through when he returned from Dubai was made to intimidate him.

    TheNewsGuru (TNG) reports Atiku returned to Nigeria in a private jet on Sunday at about 1:30 am after an over two weeks vacation trip to Dubai.

    Arriving at the airport in Abuja, a special security squad comprised of the Army, Police, Custom and Immigration officers carried out a thorough security check on the former Vice President and his aircraft.

    “I arrived to Abuja this morning to a search by agents of the state, aimed at intimidating me and my staff. I am committed to building a Nigeria where no citizen is intimidated by agents of state who are paid to protect them,” he tweeted.

    During the search, video recording gadgets and other devices were used to capture the exercise but nothing implicating was found on the Adamawa-born politician.

    However, supporters of the presidential candidate condemned the security check, describing it as harassment.

    According to Ilemona Onoja, aide to Senate President Bukola Saraki, Atiku was harassed by the special security squad.

    “Apparently, lies propaganda and intimidation are going to be fixtures in this election,” he tweeted.

    Also, Senator Ben Murray-Bruce condemned the security check.

    “Nigeria is not a fascist state. We will not return to a jackboot dictatorship,” he tweeted.
