”Easter holiday provides an opportunity for me to spend quality time with my family.

”We decided to come down here today to have fun not minding the deplorable state of the road from Okoko down to Badagry.

”We got here around 1p.m., but frankly speaking, this is a serene and cool place.

”We are really enjoying the work of nature here at the beach, I wish the government will develop the beach,” he said.

Mrs Josephine Adisa, a widow from Lagos Island waswalso there in company with her four children.

She said that they came to enjoy at the beach.

”So far, I have made a lot of money through patronage by customers and I’m sure I will still make more money because more revellers will still come.

”I have sold all the first batch of coconuts I brought here in the morning and I have sent for another set. Today has been very profitable; thanks to the fun-seekers.

”I pray to continue to make sales like this daily,” he said.

NAN also observed that at Ar-Rakhab Beach and Holiday Resort, several fun-seekers and revellers were seen catching fun on Easter Monday.

The official in charge of the Beach and Holiday Resort, Mr James Davis, attributed the large turn out to different activities provided by the resort.

Davis said that the serene environment of the place and its safety encouraged the visitors to be there despite the distance.

Mr Femi Atanda from Sango-Ota in Ogun said despite the deplorable state of the road, he came in company with his family members and friends to have fun at the beach.

According to Atanda, ”I almost turned back but because my children insisted on coming down to the beach.”

He appealed to the government controlling the area where the beach is located to repair the roads leading to it.

  • Celebrating the victory of Jesus – Femi Aribisala

    By Femi Aribisala

God created the first man, Adam, in his image and likeness. He then put him in his garden of Eden to tend and take care of the garden.

He gave Adam a seemingly simple injunction: “Of every tree of the garden you may freely eat; but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.” (Genesis 2:16-17).

However, Adam could not obey this sanction. The devil tempted him and his wife Eve, assuring them that they would not die if they ate the forbidden fruit. He promised them that, instead, their eyes would be opened and they would become as wise as God himself.

Rather than obey God, Adam and Eve obeyed the devil. They ate the forbidden fruit and died instantaneously. They died spiritually, even while still remaining alive in the flesh.

    Slaves of sin

As a result of their sin of disobedience, the devil became the ruler of this world. (John 12:31). Man became a slave of sin and the devil, instead of a servant of God and of righteousness. Adam and Eve failed to realise that: “You become the slave of whatever you choose to obey? You can be a slave to sin, which leads to death, or you can choose to obey God, which leads to righteous living.” (Romans 6:16).

Thereafter, Adam and his progeny lost the distinction of being sons of God. We became instead, sons of disobedience (Ephesians 5:6); and by implication, sons of the devil. (John 8:44). When Adam had a son, he could not be, as Adam had been, a son of God created in the image and likeness of God. Instead, he was a son of Adam, born in Adam’s “own likeness, in his own image.” (Genesis 5:3).

Thus, through Adam, sin and death entered the world, bringing about a fundamental disconnect between God and man. Men continued to seek God but in ignorance and darkness, worshiping man-made idols and the host of heaven in the foolish belief that, by so-doing, they were worshiping God.

Therefore, God chose one nation, Israel, through whom he delivered to mankind the oracles of God. Through his servant Moses, God gave Israel some 613 laws (referred to as the Law of Moses) stipulating what he required of men and how we were to worship him.

    Law of futility

However, God knew from the get-go that no man could keep those laws. They were not only exacting, if you failed to meet one of them, it was assumed that you had failed to meet all of them: “The person who keeps every law of God but makes one little slip is just as guilty as the person who has broken every law there is.” (James 2:10).

So what was the point of God giving us laws he knows we cannot keep?

God gave the law to show us that his standards are too high for us. He gave the law to make us understand that: “(his) thoughts are not (our) thoughts, nor are (our) ways his ways, for as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are (God’s) ways higher than our ways, and (his) thoughts than (our) thoughts.” (Isaiah 55:8-9).

Moreover, the law was our perfect introduction us to the second man, Jesus; the only one who could keep God’s laws. “In fact, the Law was our teacher. It was supposed to teach us until we had faith and were acceptable to God. But once a person has learned to have faith, there is no more need to have the Law as a teacher.” (Galatians 3:24-25).

Jesus fulfilled all the requirements of the law that we cannot fulfil. Not even once did he transgress any of God’s commandments. He “faced all of the same testings we do, yet he did not sin.” (Hebrews 4:15).

Accordingly, John says: “I saw in the right hand of him who sat on the throne a scroll written inside and on the back, sealed with seven seals. Then I saw a strong angel proclaiming with a loud voice, ‘Who is worthy to open the scroll and to loose its seals?’ And no one in heaven or on the earth or under the earth was able to open the scroll, or to look at it.

So I wept much, because no one was found worthy to open and read the scroll, or to look at it. But one of the elders said to me, ‘Do not weep. Behold, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has prevailed to open the scroll and to loose its seven seals.’” (Revelation 5:1-5).

    Jesus our saviour

God says: “The soul who sins shall die.” (Ezekiel 18:4). “Sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all men, because all sinned.” (Romans 5:12). But God, in his mercy, then laid all our sins upon sinless Jesus: “He was pierced for our rebellion, crushed for our sins. He was beaten so we could be whole. He was whipped so we could be healed.” (Isaiah 53:5).

Jesus died for our sins and as our substitute. So doing, God cancelled the death that Jesus died on our behalf by raising Jesus back to life after three days. As he was being raised back to life, so were we who were hitherto dead in trespasses and sins. (Ephesians 2:4-6). In this manner, God imputed our sins to Jesus and imputed Jesus’ righteousness to us.

Jesus himself became our life. (Colossians 3:4). Because he lives, those of us who believe in him will live and receive God’s gracious gift of eternal life. Jesus then became our representative. He received the penalty we deserve. Nevertheless, he asked God to forgive us for our sins. He prevailed over all the wiles of the devil and recovered everything we had lost in Adam.

“Therefore, as through one man’s offense judgment came to all men, resulting in condemnation, even so through one man’s righteous act the free gift came to all men, resulting in justification of life. For as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, so also by one man’s obedience many will be made righteous.” (Romans 5:18-19).

    Thanks to Jesus

Thanks to Jesus, salvation is no longer based on obeying laws we could not obey. It is now based on believing what we can believe. “For by grace (we) have been saved through faith, and that not of (ourselves); it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.” (Ephesians 2:8-9).

If we accept Jesus as our Lord and Saviour, and believe that God raised him from the dead for our justification, we will be saved from our sins. The only sin that now remains is the sin of not believing in Jesus. (John 16:8-9).

Those who believe in Jesus receive his Holy Spirit. They now walk in the light of his word. If and when they sin, they are quick to confess their sins, confident that God is faithful and just to forgive them their sins and to cleanse them from all unrighteousness. (1 John 1:9).

  • Waiting for Nigeria’s Easter – Francis Ewherido

    By Francis Ewherido

Yesterday was Good Friday, but I will not dwell on its import because it will distract us from focusing on our destination. Tomorrow is Easter. Tomorrow, we shall commemorate the anniversary of the risen Lord. Easter means victory over death and the triumph of good over evil; it means light after darkness, calm after storm, dawn after dark, a crown of glory after a crown of thorns and reward after pain and perseverance. Nigerians have been observing Ash Wednesday (where we are reminded with ashes on our forehead that we are dust; from dust we came and to dust we shall return) and Good Friday before I was born and I am now in my 50s. Nigeria did celebrate “Easter” in the past, but it is now distant memory. When is Nigeria going to enjoy “Easter” again?

In the last one week, over 50 people were killed in one swoop in Zamfara, another 20 or thereabout were killed in Kaduna, the Jukuns and the Tivs are at one another’s throat in Taraba. Reports say suspected rampaging herdsmen killed five indigenes of the University town of Abraka in Delta Central. They also struck in Ondo State and Enugu State. Like Uwheru, also in Delta Central of Delta State, armed herdsmen have become an army of occupation. Indigenes have become hostages in their ancestral homes. They pay ‘passage’ and protection fees before they venture out of town into their ancestral farmlands. Where is the protection guaranteed for Nigerian citizens in the constitution? When are these Nigerians and indeed Nigeria going to have its Easter (victory) over this lawlessness?

In the last week and over a period of two months, some Nigerians have lost their lives via bullets from guns of uniformed men: police and customs to be very specific. Uniforms have become a symbol of oppression and illegality in Nigeria. Many Nigerians feel a sense of helplessness once they leave their homes. We are helpless against uniformed people, both armed and unarmed. Customs recently collected N25,000 from a friend of mine on Sagamu-Benin road. He cleared his vehicle through Apapa Port. Everything was official, so he paid the appropriate import duty. So what was his “crime?” “You no know the kind expensive motor when you put for road?” The customs people asked him. It is now a crime for a private sector person, who has worked very hard for his money, to drive an expensive car.

Somebody asked and I am asking: I can understand armed customs men at our international borders, but what are customs men with guns doing on inner country roads? When are we going to have our “Easter” when we solve our problems by uprooting the tree instead of trimming the branches? When are we going to have our “Easter” when the presence of uniformed men will engender trust and peace of mind, instead of anxiety and trepidation?

In the 60s, before the military struck and unitarised Nigeria, we practiced regionalism and all the regions prospered. They controlled their resources and used them to enhance the lives of their people. Now every state goes cap in hand to Abuja every month to collect money from the federation account to meet its needs, including the basic needs. Except Lagos, every other state is doomed without this money. Yet Zamfara, one of the poorest and most backward states in Nigeria, sits on trillion naira worth of gold. Instead of this natural resource to be used for the people, it has become an agent of death; a curse like oil in the Niger Delta. Without disruption of its economic activities, Benue State alone can provide West Africa its need in yams, yet it struggles to pay workers’ salaries and provide basic infrastructure for its people. When are we going to devolve powers to the federating units and enjoy “Easter” again? When will the healthy competition among federating units that improved the lives of the ordinary people in the 60s return?

Nigerians without prepaid meters currently pay outrageous electricity bills for being kept in darkness. When are we going to enjoy constant power supply? When are we going to stop being billed for darkness and pay for only the power we consume? After battling for months and getting a pre-paid meter at home, my DISCO, Eko Electricity Distribution Company, has shifted attention to my office. This month, I got a bill of N50,000. Since when did Dangote Refinery relocate their operations to my tiny office to warrant this crazy bill? Now I am going to begin another needless battle for what is taken for granted in climes where normal human beings live. When are we going to have our “Easter” when we get our dues without going through the eye of a needle?

I was one of the lucky ones who graduated in the 80s before the great slide into ignominy of our educational standards started in the 90s. School boy errors of today’s university graduates have become routine jokes in the social media, but these are people who are supposed to take over political and economic positions at some point. Establishing quality private schools will not solve our educational problems because the bulk of our people cannot send their children there, especially now that Nigeria is now the global poverty capital. When are we going to celebrate “Easter” in our educational sector?

Our health sector has not fared better. When are we going to celebrate “Easter” in our health sector? The story is the same across all sectors of our national life. We face a clear and present danger. I go out every day and see the way we live our lives – in homes, offices, religious places, schools, hospitals, airports and on the road – and I know we are in big trouble. Governments – federal, state and local government – have a major role to play, but our problems have spiraled out of control. There has been a monumental failure of leadership across board and over time, no doubt, but all hands must be on deck or we are… At the end, there is scarcely any anus without some sh*t, so pointing of fingers at others alone is pointless; we are all partly responsible for the mess. Clean your own little corner. The essence of man in life is to solve problems and make life easier for humanity. It is a way of life and we must all imbibe it.

Nigeria’s “Easter” is still on the way. Yet this night, like many other Nigerians, I am going to stay awake to send family members, friends and well-wishers happy Easter messages. I might just start straightaway by wishing you a happy Easter (no need adding “in advance.” The universal Easter is here).

  • Easter: NNPC reassures Nigerians of adequate fuel supply

The Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Dr. Maikanti Baru, on Friday said that the corporation is now accountable for 75 per cent of gas supply to power in the country.

The volume is about 300 million standard cubic feet per day.

He reaffirmed the readiness of the NNPC to ensure adequate supply of petroleum products in all the nook and cranny of the country during the Easter holidays and beyond.

Baru who gave this commitment during the conferment on him of the “Distinguished Merit Award’’ by the Association of Business Managers and Administrators of Nigeria in Abuja, said the corporation currently had 1.7 billion litres of petrol in stock equivalent to 35 days sufficiency without adding a drop.

He said plans were afoot to increase it to 2.4 billion litres by the end of the month.

A release by the NNPC Group General Manager, Group Public Affairs, Mr. Ndu Ughamadu, stated the corporation’s helmsman informed that currently NNPC was responsible for 75 per cent of gas supply to power in the country to the tune of over 300 million standard cubic feet (Scf) of gas per day.

The excited NNPC GMD dedicated the award to President Muhammadu Buhari for his support for the oil and gas Industry.

Easter: Buhari felicitates with Nigerians, renews commitment to fight against insurgency

President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday felicitated with Nigerians especially the Christian faithfuls on the occasion of the 2019 Easter celebrations starting from Friday.

The president also promised renewed commitments to the fight against insurgency currently bedeviling the country.

In a message he specially signed and released to the media on Thursday evening, the president urged Nigerians to lose hope in his administration.

    Read full message below:

PRESIDENT BUHARI’S 2019 EASTER MESSAGE TO NIGERIANS

I rejoice with all Nigerians, especially our Christian brethren on the glorious occasion of the celebration of Easter 2019.

Easter is the most important feast in the Christian calendar and represents God’s redemptive mission over humanity, the triumph of light over darkness, hope over despair and good over evil.

The Christian festival commemorating the resurrection of Jesus Christ is also a time to emulate the virtues of love, sacrifice, forgiveness, humility, courage and endurance, which Christ embodied and remarkably demonstrated during His earthly ministry.

Let us use this auspicious season to show love to our neighbours, and cater to the needs of the less-privileged in our midst.

Our nation is currently gripped with gloom over unfortunate killings, kidnappings and violence, as seen in the recent tragic incidents in some states of the federation.

This should not be. We must reinforce the bond of brotherhood and good neighbourliness that citizens of a cohesive country must share. We must not allow the few bad elements in our communities to put asunder our communal tendencies and chords of unity.

I know from my regular interactions with security chiefs, state governors, victims and members of communities caught up in the unfortunate cycle of violence, that Nigerians are united against the evil minority.

This administration will do all it takes to adequately equip and motivate our armed forces and other law enforcement agencies to enable them successfully confront these security challenges. We will not allow merchants of evil and death to overwhelm the nation. Under my watch, the nation will triumph over them – terrorists, bandits, kidnappers and the like.

On this holy occasion, I enjoin all Nigerians to intensify prayers for peace and security to return to all parts of the country. I also urge you not to lose hope of a brighter and greater future for the country when we do the right things in love. Weeping may endure for the night, but joy comes in the morning.

I do not take the import of my re-election for granted, especially the expectations of majority of Nigerians towards providing adequate security, fixing the economy and fighting corruption.

The obligation of this administration as we prepare to take governance to the Next Level, is to continue to provide dedicated and honest leadership, where every citizen irrespective of religion or ethnic origin, feels secure to live, invest and prosper; where public office holders are accountable; and law breakers are brought to justice.

Once more, I wish all our Christian brothers and sisters in Nigeria and around the world celebrating the resurrection of Jesus Christ, a Happy Easter.

    Muhammadu Buhari

  • Easter: Fuel marketers allay fears, assures Nigerians of adequate supply

The Major Oil Marketers Association of Nigeria (MOMAN) on Friday urged Nigerians to stop panicking over the likelihood of fuel scarcity.

It assured of the association’s effective distribution of petroleum products across the country.

Mr Clement Isong, an official of the association, gave the assurance in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos against the backdrop of the new queues at the filling stations in some part of the country.

According to Isong, MOMAN is working very closely with NNPC to make ensure that the queues will soon disappear.

“There were just some operational challenges at the jetty which had been addressed.

“MOMAN has product and we are still receiving product from NNPC at official price.

“Am assuring Nigerians that there won’t be scarcity and the little challenges from the discharging reception at the jetty had been address.

“No cause for alarm, the queues at the stations will disappear in a short while,’’ Isong assured.

The MOMAN official said the association was committed to supporting the Federal Government on effective distribution of petroleum products.

“In line with government’s efforts at ensuring efficient petroleum products distribution across the country, MOMAN members have opted for a seamless distribution of petroleum products.

“We are working to present a common front that will easily drive government policies and ensure smooth distribution of petroleum products across the country,” he said.

Mr Olufemi Adewole, The Executive Secretary of Depot and Petroleum Products Marketers Association of Nigeria (DAPPMAN), however, told NAN that NNPC distribution pricing had been a major issue for depot owners.

He said that for now no member had product in his facilities.

Adewole said that the price at which NNPC was giving members and other charges had made it extremely difficult for them.

“It’s not profitable because we are getting it between N139 and N140 per litre with other additional charges, then at what price do we sell it.”

“NPPC had product, but with the NNPC price and other costs incurred, like cost of hiring vessel it will be on the hire side and we have informed them but nothing was done.”

  • Easter: NNPC cautions against panic buying, assures of enough petroleum products

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) has advised motorists and other petroleum products consumers not to engage in panic buying, saying there is enough petroleum products stock in 55 depots across the country.

Listing the depots that have adequate petroleum products stock, NNPC Group General Manager, Group Public Affairs Division, Mr. Ndu Ughamadu, in a release on Friday in Abuja, stated that 23 depots in Lagos, seven in Port Harcourt, 11 in Warri, six in Calabar and eight in Kaduna were fully stocked with white products.

He explained that two vessels of 50million litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), otherwise called petrol, would arrive the shores of Nigeria every day from tomorrow.

The release assured Nigerians of an eventful Easter period just as the just ended Yuletide, even as it cautioned depot owners or terminal operators not to sell petrol above the official ex-depot price of N133.28k per litre.

The corporation also advised petroleum products marketers not to sell the product above N145 per litre.

The release said the subsisting ex-depot petrol price of N133.28k per litre was consistent with the Petroleum Products Pricing Regulatory Agency’s (PPPRA) template and should be adhered to.

He advised Nigerians to remain vigilant and volunteer information to the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR), the Industry regulator or to any law enforcement agency around them, on any station which sells petrol beyond N145 per litre.

Easter: CAS fetes frontline troops in northeast [Photos]

Frontline personnel of the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) currently serving in the Northeast and visiting members of their families have been treated to a special lunch by the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, on 1 April 2018, in celebration of the Easter festivities.

The CAS, who was represented at the occasion by the Commander Air Task Force (ATF) of Operation LAFIYA DOLE, Air Vice Marshal (AVM) Idi Lubo, commended the contributions of personnel towards prosecuting the fight against insurgency in the country and urged them not to rest on their oars.

He said that although a lot of success had been recorded in the fight against Boko Haram Terrorists, the personnel needed to put more effort towards completely eradicating the menace.

The representative of the CAS later had lunch with the other NAF frontline personnel serving in Yola.

At Yola, AVM Lubo thanked Air Marshal Abubakar for the kind gesture of facilitating the lunch. Addressing the troops after the lunch, the representative of the CAS commended the troops for their relentless efforts and sacrifices, which had greatly degraded the capability of the insurgents.

He equally tasked the troops to redouble their efforts to ensure that the entire country, and the Northeast Region in particular, become a safer place for Nigerians.

AVM Lubo later presented the award of the Best Officer of the Quarter to Group Captain Samuel Eyoma, who is the Head of the Data Collection and Analysis Team in the Tactical Operation Centre.

He then encouraged the Senior Officer to remain focused and diligent in the discharge of his duties. Likewise, he charged other personnel to emulate those qualities that won Group Captain Eyoma the award.

The representative of the CAS also seized the opportunity to commission some projects at 103 Strike Group, aimed at enhancing the protection of NAF critical assets in NAF Base Yola.

The idea behind the special lunch with NAF frontline personnel, which has become a tradition since Air Marshal Abubakar became the CAS, is to sustain their morale towards enhancing operational effectiveness.
