Ebonyi govt announces minimum wage increase for workers

The Ebonyi Government has announced an increase in the minimum wage of civil servants from N70,000 to N90,000.

The Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Chief Ikeuwa Omebe, made the disclosure on Thursday, while briefing newsmen on the outcome of the state Executive Council meeting.

Omebe said that the increament was to enhance workers’ welfare, adding that the implementation was with immediate effect and covered all categories of the workforce.

“We want to state categorically that this is not a political statement as this government does not toy with workers’ welfare.

“The government has offset the pension and gratuities of state retirees from its creation in 1996 to date.

“The verification process for retirees in the Local Government Areas had commenced and when completed, the payment will be made,” he said.

He also said that if the government did not play politics with such huge financial obligations, it will not do so with additional N20,000 to workers.

“The governor is a leader, builder of capacity, human beings and infrastructure.

“The government is anchored on the biblical people’s charter of needs mantra, which is leading the people according to their needs,” the commissioner said.

Omebe disclosed that the EXCO also considered the implementation of the eighth-year tenure policy for directors and immediate retirement of those who have served for the period on the same cadre.T

“The EXCO exhaustively deliberated on the issue and approved its implementation for the affected permanent secretaries and directors,” he said.

FRSC fingers police as two die In Ebonyi auto crash

Two persons have been confirmed dead and three others injured in a ghastly motor accident that occurred near the permanent site of Ebonyi State University, Ishieke, along the Abakaliki–Enugu Expressway of Ebonyi State.

Confirming the tragic incident to newsmen on Saturday, the Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Ebonyi State, Anthony Ogbodo, said that the tragic crash involved a commercial bus carrying 10 passengers and a Mercedes-Benz 911 truck transporting sachet water from Enugu to Abakaliki.

It was gathered that the accident happened as a result of the partial blockage of one lane of the federal highway by security personnel attached to the Ishieke Police Station, a measure residents of the area reportedly said has contributed to a series of recent accidents recorded in the area.

Ogbodo also attributed the crash to reckless driving compounded by the road obstruction.

“The passenger bus was coming from Otukpo, Benue State, and the truck from Enugu to Abakaliki,” Ogbodo explained.

“At night, the police at that junction blocked one of the lanes. Closing one lane of the road contributed to the accident.”

He further disclosed that 10 passengers were on board the bus, eight males and two females.

“Three were injured and two died, a male and a female,” he said.

Ogbodo said the injured victims are receiving medical treatment, while the corpses have been deposited at the Alex Ekwueme Federal University Teaching Hospital mortuary in Abakaliki.

He also lamented that the continued practice of blocking one side of the expressway has created unnecessary hazards for road users.

“Dangerous driving combined with the obstruction is a recipe for disaster,” he warned.

  • SAD: 2 dead, 3 injured in Ebonyi mining pit collapse

SAD: 2 dead, 3 injured in Ebonyi mining pit collapse

Tragedy struck at Ajirija lead mining site in Ihietutu Community, Ishiagu, Ivo Local Government Area of Ebonyi, at the weekend, when the pit collapsed, leaving two persons dead and three others critically injured.

The site, reportedly owned by one Henry Ahanaotu, was said to have been parcelled out and subletted to unlicenced petty miners operating without professional supervision.

The affected pit was allegedly being managed by an indigene of Ihietutu, Mrs Lovelyn Victor.

An indigene of the community, who spoke to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on the condition of anonymity, said that the incident was one in a series of unreported tragedies at the site.

He recalled that a similar incident earlier in the year also claimed two lives and left several others injured, yet no sanctions were imposed on the site owner or the illegal operators.

“Unfortunately, these incidents and deaths only end with the police, if at all. There has never been any punishment for the site owners or illegal miners, who put lives at risk,” the source said.

Reacting, Ahanaotu described the incident as unfortunate, but said that he subletted the lease to the operators as a means of empowering youths of the community.

He argued that Victor was an established miner with over four excavators and other heavy equipment.

“Mine pit collapse is a regular occurrence anywhere mining is carried out. Even Royal Salt, touted as the biggest mining firm in Nigeria, experiences incidences of pit collapse with attendant deaths.

“The incident happened last weekend but we have yet to visit the scene to inspect and know why it occurred. I have also called the Federal Mines Officer to brief him.

“But as for carrying out operations based on safety principles, she does it well. She is also in partnership with other operators in the site. All we are doing is to help empower the people,” Ahanaotu said.

The Spokesman for the state Police Command, SP Joshua Ukandu, confirmed the incident.

Ukandu said a report from the Ivo Police Division indicated that five persons were involved in the accident, contrary to the six reported by community members.

He said: “Five persons were actually involved in the unfortunate incident.

“The first victim died on the spot, while another died in the hospital. The remaining three have been treated and discharged,” Ukandu said.

Meanwhile, the state Chairperson of the Federation of Women Miners, Mrs Sylvia Ogbuinya, has expressed regrets over the tragedy and extended condolences to the bereaved families.

Ogbuinya said that the operator of the affected pit was not a member of the federation and urged a full-scale police investigation into the incident.

“We carry out regular trainings and workshops for our members to bring them up to speed with modern safety standards in mining operations to safeguard lives.

“I have checked, and the affected operator is not a member of the federation.

“We wonder if she adheres to normal safety principles and regular environmental impact assessments to mitigate risks,” Ogbuinya said.

Some indigenes of Ihietutu, who also spoke to NAN on the incident, called on the state and federal mining authorities to check the activities of unlicenced and illegal miners in the area.

“These illegal miners are only concerned with profit and do not comply with regulatory standards, thereby endangering lives and the ecosystem.

“Collapsed pits resulting in deaths have become a regular occurrence in our community, putting families in constant agony.

“We are appealing to relevant authorities to enforce laws against illegal and unlicenced mining in out community,” they said.

The Family Law Centre in Abakaliki, Ebonyi, has issued an order restraining the family of late Mr Okorie Nwachukwu from alleged attacks on his third wife, Blessing, over property dispute.

The Chairperson of the centre, Mrs Elizabeth Nwali gave the order on Friday during hearing on an alleged land dispute at Amikeaba in Ebonyi Local Government Area of the state.

She cautioned the first and second wives, Ngozi and Nkechi as well as other members of the family against further abuse against Blessing pending the outcome of their case in the center.

Nwali said that the action was to allow  investigations and to resolve the matter that had resulted to assault, threat to life and sale of ‘Ozor ulo’ (portion of a house from their husband).

Earlier, Blessing in a local dialect, told the centre that she was the third wife to the deceased and was legally married with three children.

She alleged that a portion of land given to her by her late husband was taken away, with part of the land being sold.

“Others were used for farming by Onyebuchi Nwachukwu, first son to the deceased and his wife,” she said.

According to Blessing, she was beaten, thrown stones and threatened by her co wives and their children especially Onyebuchi.

“My co- wives and their children are my oppressors.

“Whenever I ask Onyebuchi concerning the property, he slaps and threatens to kill me.

“They seized the 14 rooms home of my late husband, collected rent and shared the money among the two wives without including me,” Blessing added.

She appealed to the centre to compel the accused to treat her of injuries incurred from their maltreatment.

She also said that the accused must sign an undertaking and share her late husband’s property to include 14 rooms, empty land among others.

The third wife also urged the centre to caution them not to sell her ozoulo’ portion of land.

In his defence, Mr Onyebuchi Nwachukwu, the accused and first son to the deceased, claimed that he never maltreated her as alleged.

On his part, Mr Silas Nwachukwu, younger brother to the deceased, explained how the 14 rooms apartment was shared among the three wives of his late brother.

According to him, the first wife got three rooms; the second wife with three sons got four rooms; while Blessing, the third wife got three rooms as well.

Nwachukwu added that N200, 000 and a flat each was handed over to the three women.

  • Ebonyi single mother denies selling baby for N25m

Ebonyi single mother denies selling baby for N25m

A 37-year-old single mother from Ebonyi, Susan Nweze, on Tuesday, said her newborn baby was not sold for N25 million.

Nweze told NAN at her residence in Abakaliki that she only collected N700,000 for adoption and not for sale as alleged by an online media.

She decried the alleged sale, saying that the adoption processes were duly followed and signed before she gave out the baby.

Recall that the woman’s family had alleged that some police officers connived with the woman to sell the baby.

The family filed their complaint in a petition to the Assistant Inspector General of Police, Force Criminal Investigation, Enugu, through their lawyer, Nzogbu Kingsley.

They connived and sold the baby for N25 million, while a paltry N700,000 was given to Susan, our daughter”, they alleged.

The family members also accused the police, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NAPTIP and the state’s Ministry of Women Affairs of having a hand in the sale.

They demanded that the baby boy be released to them.

Nweze, however, maintained that her baby was given out for an adoption for N700,000 only and not N25 million.

She explained that “I gave birth at the Police Headquarters Clinic and I knew very well that I was not ready to embark on training any child due to some difficulties around me.

“I am a single-mother, I already have a 19-year-old daughter and a 12-year-old son. So, I thought about all these and I knew I was not capable of raising a new child.

“I did not give out my child for adoption because of money. It was because I knew I was not prepared for the baby. I have nothing doing and no help from anywhere.

“The individual who adopted the baby gave me N700,000 only. The money was just to compensate and help me recover from my delivery,” Nweze said.

Reacting to the development, Mr Ikeuwa Omebeh, Commissioner for Information and Orientation in Ebonyi, described the allegation as unfounded.

He said “we understood that the mother of the said baby gave up the boy for custody and possible adoption since according to her, she was not financially and emotionally stable to keep the baby.

“The ministry is currently handling the matter based on extant law and investigation is ongoing to ascertain the genuineness and circumstances surrounding the baby’s birth, paternity and other incidents thereof.”

Mrs Felicia Nwankpuma, the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, who
said that the ministry was not involved in the sale of the baby, added that “I am shocked about the N25 million and I do not know where that story is coming from.

“The child is with us. It is in the custody of the ministry to ensure that the baby is well taken care of. No baby was sold. So, any story about N25 million, I don’t know,” Nwankpuma said.

What drove me to ADC – Former Ebonyi PDP Chairman

A former Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ebonyi, Mr Silas Onu has said that irreconcilable differences within the party made him defect to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Onu, also a former senatorial candidate of the PDP in Ebonyi, who made the submission on Sunday in an interview, while noting that the decision was”patriotic’, said that the roles of few incumbent governors in the party’s affairs have made the differences irreconcilable.

“I am, therefore, compelled to pursue my political aspirations in a different but stable platform. I am leaving PDP with a heavy heart as the decision didn’t come easy,” he said.

He noted that the ADC provided such stable platform and sought for support from his supporters.

“I pray that we sojourn unto the ADC to continue forging a stronger political movement. This will be in the overall interest of Ebonyi people,” he said.

Onu was a former Publicity Secretary of the PDP in Ebonyi before emerging it’s state chairman.
