Why Gov. Umahi wants NASS leadership positions zoned

The Governor of Ebonyi State Dave Umahi, has advised the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC), to ensure it adopts a zoning formular for the emergence of leaders of the 10th National Assembly.

He gave the advice on Tuesday in Abuja while speaking to State House Correspondents, after he met behind closed doors with President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa.

He said doing so will ensure equity and balance of power among the geo-political zones of the country.

“I am a party man and I am very committed to a descent process. The party and the President-Elect directed that we shouldn’t talk about that yet but we should all go back and work for the gubernatorial and Houses of Assembly election.

“But I believe strongly that zoning must be done by the party. It should not allow everybody to jump to the race and when the time comes for zoning they must look at all the parameters in order to carry every region along. This is very important,” he said.

Commenting on the chances of the APC in the forthcoming Governorship election in the South East, the Governor expressed optimism that the APC will do well.

“I would, first of all, like to analyze my State although we are going to have an election there, out of the five in the region. Governorship elections will be held in Abia, Ebonyi and Enugu, the other two are off-season. But there will be House of Assembly elections in all five States.

“In my State (Ebonyi), I have nothing to worry about because I think God has done the work for me. Our candidate is going to emerge no matter how desperate the opposition will want to thrive.

“First and foremost, the Presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi has already announced that there is no gubernatorial candidate for the Labour Party in Ebonyi; but even if there was a candidate standing for election, he is no match to the candidate of the APC so I am very sure that we are going to win,” Umahi stressed.

Recall also that the Police in the state had declared the APGA Governorship Candidate wanted over a petition brought against him by some members of his family.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Campaign Council, Ebonyi State chapter, has condemned the unwarranted and heinous attack on the country home of its party chieftain, Mr Boniface Ofoke, at Edukwu Achi in Izzi Local Government Area of the State.

Idika noted that the attack, which occurred on Thursday night forced the party to put on hold its campaign rally already fixed to hold in Ofoke’s compound in Izzi area on Friday.

Just In: Court disbands Ebubeagu security outfit

The Federal High Court sitting in Abakaliki on Tuesday disbanded the South-East security outfit Ebubeagu in Ebonyi State.

According to the court, the disbandment of the security outfit was as a result of human rights abuses, extortions, illegal arrests and use of fire arms.

The South Eastern regional security outfit called Ebubeagu on 12th April 2021. This latter group came after long public pressure from the citizens due to the rising insecurity.

The operations of these regional networks of security to support policing in their various zones attracts different levels of legitimation from the population in their operational bases.

At the time the Ebubeagu security outfit was launched, ESN was already confronting the violent herdsmen in different parts of the South East. IPOB in question had declared that it was not going to coexist with Ebubeagu in the region. Besides, the operations of Ebubeagu have been trailed by reports of rights abuses, torture and extra-judicial killings. In Ebonyi State, it was reported that the security outfit is used to harassment of perceived enemies of the State Government. In Imo State, several deaths have been linked to Ebubeagu. Also, the widespread misgiving about the security outfit led to an allegation that they overlapped into Oba in Anambra State recently to attack a prominent member of the community. Overall, Ebubeagu tends not to command the required goodwill of a localised security outfit to support security in the South East.
