    Hoodlums storm Ikwo LG Chairman’s house in Ebonyi, Kill four

    The country home of the Chairman of Ikwo Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, Steve Orogwu, was Tuesday morning raided and attacked and in the process killed three of his relatives.

    The unknown gunmen also killed the security guard and razed down the building belonging to the Orogwu’s

    Steve Orogwu wasn’t around when the attack took place but immediately reached out to the police,family and friends concerning the attack.

    A source close to Mr Orogwu said the hoodlums stormed the chairman’s home in Ekpaomaka late Tuesday night.

    Addressing pressmen ,Steve Orogwu confirmed the incident saying the hoodlums killed a security guard and his elder brother plus two of his sons.

    He said: “They attacked my family compound at Ikwo at night and killed my elder brother and two of his sons and a security guard.”

    He also said the gunmen set ablaze the family’s house in the compound.

    It was further learnt that the corpses of the victims have been taken to a mortuary in Abakaliki.

    The gunmen left no traces of the attack, forcing everyone to assume the persons behind the attack.

     

    Security in Southeast Nigeria, including Ebonyi, has deteriorated with attacks on security agencies, government and public facilities, and high profile individuals becoming almost a daily occurrence.

    Meanwhile, the attacks have been blamed on the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), a group seeking an independent state of Biafra to be carved out of the South-east and parts of the South-south of the country.

    The attacks increased following the arrest of Nnamdi Kanu , the IPOB leader, last year by the Nigerian government.

    The group has consistently denied responsibility for the attacks stating that it is a non-violent organization.

    Mr Kanu is being detained in Abuja where he is facing trial for treason.

    26 -year-old lady allegedly gang-raped to death in Ebonyi

    A 26 year old lady whose names have been given as Miss Ugochukwu Nworie has been found dead in a hotel in Ebonyi state, the State Police Command has revealed.

    The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Loveth Odah, on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, Aliyu Garba, on Wednesday in Abakaliki, vowed to arrest killers of the victim.

    It was gathered that the 26 year old Nworie was gang-raped as more than 12 used condoms were found in the hotel room.

    The PPRO said that investigation was still ongoing and other information needed will be provided at a later time.

    The police Spokesperson said the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Kpirikpiri Police Division in the State, confirmed that the incident took place in Hope-in hotel, situated at Nine Ngbowo Street, Abakaliki.

    “The DPO reported that the incident took place while on a routine check on the hotel. A room not accounted for was discovered.

    “So the DPO decided to enquire from the receptionist, who told him that the guests in the room were unknown to him.

    “Efforts to open the room proved abortive, until he requested for the spare key to open the door, only to discover a lifeless body of the lady, naked and her legs, hands with mouth were tied to the bed in the room,” Odah said.

    She added the corpse had been deposited at a morgue, describing the incident as unfortunate and an offence against humanity.

    Odah advised the general public, especially young ladies, to be careful, adding that efforts were on top gear to arrest and prosecute those behind her death.

    There is uneasiness among residents of the Abakaliki metropolis as a result of the death of a 26-year-old lady, Ugochukwu Nworie.

    She was allegedly raped to death at Hope-in Hotel, Ngbowo Street, Abakaliki, the Ebonyi State capital.

    The State Police Command confirmed the incident to TheNewsGuru.com on Thursday.

    Our correspondent gathered that the victim arrived at the hotel in the company of some young men late Monday night with some persons familiar with the story stating that the lady was found dead in the room after the door was opened on Tuesday morning with her legs, hands, and mouth tied.

    The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Mrs. Loveth Odah, said the Divisional Police Officer of Kpirikpiri Police Division in the Abakaliki metropolis, reported that the incident happened in Hope-in Hotel, situated at Ngbowo Street, Abakaliki.

    She noted that the DPO reported that the incident happened while on a routine check at the hotel. A room not accounted for was then discovered.

    The State Police Public Relations Officer further stated that efforts were on to arrest and prosecute the perpetrators to serve as a deterrent to possible offenders.

    “Preliminary investigation indicated that the lady was gang-raped, as more than 12 used condoms were discovered in the room.

    “Investigation is still ongoing and we would continue to update the media and public as we unravel more details on the matter,” she said.

    She said the corpse had been deposited at a morgue.

    Meanwhile, the state Commissioner of Police, Garba Aliyu has directed a thorough investigation into the incident to unravel those behind the crime.

    Thenewsguri.com further learned it had earlier been feared that the incident might not be unconnected with a ritual killing, but having realized that no essential parts of the deceased body were missing, the police are looking possible case of rape gone wrong.

    Buhari arrives Ebonyi for 2-day working visit

    President Muhammadu Buhari has arrived in Ebonyi State for a two-day official visit to the state.

    The president who was accompanied by Gov. David Umahi of Ebonyi among other top government officials arrived the state at about 11. 15 am.

    The helicopter conveying the president with registration number: 5N–FG1 landed on the pavilion inside the governor’s residence in his hometown, Uburu, Ohaozara Local Government Area of the state.

    The president after exchanging pleasantries with top government officials, traditional rulers among others who came to welcome him, inspected a guard of honour mounted by the Nigerian Army.

    The president will inaugurate the ultra-modern King David University of Medical Sciences, Uburu, with adjourning roads and flyover and the newly constructed presidential lounge Abakaliki.

    The president is also expected to inaugurate the ultra-modern Ebonyi international shopping mall, facilities at the newly constructed government house, completed road projects in the state among others.

    Security across the state had been beefed up with relevant security agencies assuring the public of adequate protection of lives and property.

    Tight security as Buhari visits Ebonyi

    Security has been beefed up in Abakaliki, Ebonyi capital as President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday begin a two-day working visit to the state.

    It was observed that streets in the capital city wore new looks with different security personnel seen at strategic locations.

    It was also observed that among the security personnel on guard are soldiers, policemen, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps personnel.

    Some residents, who spoke in Abakaliki said they look forward to the presidential visit to the state.

    Mr Eugene Nwangele, described the visit as relevant, especially when stakeholders in the Southeast zone are expected to present issues that bothers the zone and country at large to Buhari.

    Nwangele said the visit would also give the people of the state in particular and south east in general a sense recognition and belonging.

    Mr Chijioke Ama commended the landmark projects and transformational policies in that have taken place in the state in the last few years.

    “Yes, Ebonyi is fast developing, I thank the President for visiting us,” Ama said.

    Mrs Juliet Egbo, a petty trader said that she had started experiencing high patronage in her business as more residents come out to welcome Buhari.

    “There is need to stabilise the economy of the country to reduce the hardship being experienced by citizens,” she said.

    Various groups, youths, women are in their colorful attires in different streets ready to welcome the president to the state.

    Soldiers kill one suspected IPOB member in Abia state

    A gunman suspected to be a member of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has been killed by operatives of 14 Brigade Army Headquarters in Ohafia, Abia State.

    Findings show that the incident happened in the Uratta area of the Enugu-Aba-Port Harcourt Expressway on Wednesday.

    Although a source claimed four members of the outlawed organization died in a shootout but another report said one pro-Biafra agitator was killed.

    It was gathered that the IPOB members marched through popular streets and markets yesterday, warning traders and residents of dire consequences if they disobeyed IPOB’s sit-at-home order today and Friday.

    The sit-at-home order given by IPOB to be observed by people in all southeastern states was to protest the scheduled visit of President Buhari to Ebonyi state on Friday for commissioning of projects by Governor Dave Umahi.

    Many shoppers, who had just arrived in Aba from other parts of the country and neighbouring African regions, could not hide their fears and anger over the sit-at-home order as it was going to force them to stay beyond their planned departure date.

    Meanwhile a source at the 14 Brigade Army barracks said that members of the proscribed group had a face-off with soldiers that led to the exchange of gunfire.

    2023 election: Heavy gunshots mar Ebonyi PDP three man delegate poll

    A three man delegate election by the PDP across 171 political wards in Evonyi State was on Tuesday truncated by heavy gunshots.
    This occurred at the pary’s Secretariat in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State capital.
    PDP Publicity Secretary, Nwoba Chika, had earlier stated in a statement that the three-man delegate election could not hold in Ebonyi because of issues the party needed to resolve in the State, and further disclosed that the election would hold on Tuesday.
    The Newsguru however uncovered that the three-man delegate election could not hold last Saturday because of the perceived chairmanship tussle between Tochukwu Okorie and Silas Onu.
    The three-man delegate election slated for Tuesday could still not hold due to varying issues.
    Aspirants, their supporters and other stakeholders of the party, who came to the party’s Secretariat very early on Tuesday awaiting the arrival of the three-man delegate election committee, were disappointed, as they waited in futility.
    When our correspondent visited the Secretariat at about 5pm on Tuesday, only one of the gubernatorial aspirants, Sen. Obinna Ogba, was seen standing at the premises of the secretariat with his supporters.

    Ogba was seen making and answering intermittent phone calls, a signal that indicated that something must be wrong somewhere.
    It was further gathered that the three-man delegate election committee had been allegedly abducted in Enugu, on their way to Ebonyi.
    This allegation could not be verified immediately due to the tension at the Secretariat as of the time of filing this report.

    There was also a heavy shooting at the party’s Secretariat following an alleged misunderstanding that ensued among party faithful.

    2023: Don’t allow politicians use you – NLC urges workers

    The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Ebonyi chapter has urged citizens across the country to elect credible and good leaders in the 2023 elections.

    Mr Ikechukwu Nwafor, the State Chairman of the NLC, made the call at a news conference in Abakaliki on Monday.

    Nwafor said that the briefing was part of the activities marking the 2022 Workers Day celebration in the state.

    The NLC in the state shifted the celebration to May 2, instead of May 1, as approved by the UN.

    “The 2023 elections are around the corner and we must not allow ourselves to be used by politicians. We must be careful on whom to support.

    “Our interest should be more on credible and good leaders that can have workers interest at heart,” he said.

    The chairman expressed worry over the wellbeing of workers in Ebonyi and the entire country.

    According to him, electing good leaders irrespective of tribe and political party would guarantee good welfare for workers.

    On good governance, Nwafor decried the way workers had been denied of their welfare and urged the government to focus more on project that could impact positively on citizenry.

    “I urge the Ebonyi government to reduce focus on non-profitable projects. They should invest more on projects that can promote social services.

    “We do not want government that will be stealing from the civil servants. We support good governance and that will continue to be our campaign come 2023,’’ he said.

    Gov. David Umahi of Ebonyi has endorsed the Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Chief Francis Nwifuru as his successor.

    The endorsement was contained in a statement signed by the Special Assistant to the Governor on Media and Publicity, Francis Nwaze and made available to newsmen on Saturday.

    Umahi according to the statement, made the endorsement during the burial of the father to the state Commissioner for Trade and Investment, Mrs Chioma Nweze at Okposi, Ohaozara Local Government Area of the state.

    “The governor assured that the speaker will consolidate on the divine mandate leadership in the state.

    “He appealed to the people of Ebonyi south senatorial zone and all Ebonyi people to support the candidacy of the speaker for the sake of equity, justice, and fairness,” the statement read.

    The statement indicated that the governor presented the speaker to Okposi people reminding them that the those of Ebonyi north zone offered their support when the southern zone sought such to produce the governor in 2015.

    “The governor implored that it was time to pay back

    and promised that the divine mandate platform upon which the government came into office will continue.

    “He urged the people not to fear as there was no one annointed by God that is not criticised by people.

    “2023 elections will be based on ticking the ballot boxes and not about promises.

    “It is a fact that my performance in office and that of others would be used by the APC for campaigns.

    “The next president of the country should come from the south for equity, justice, and fairness.

    “The All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) should offer explanations to the people if they fail to allot the position to the south east zone,” the statement read.

    The statement also indicated that the governor reacted to the recent outbursts of Gov. Nyesom Wike of Rivers on him and challenged the latter to a debate.

    “We both want to be president so the debate will enable people assess the deployment of our intellectual properties,” the statement read.

    2023: Ebonyi APGA chieftians defect to PDP

    Some key officials of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) in Ebonyi Friday defected to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

    The list of the officials included the Deputy Chairman, State Secretary, Organising Secretary, Zonal Chairmen of the three Senatorial Districts, Chairmen of the 13 local government areas and 171 ward chairmen.

    The event took place on Friday in Isu, Onicha Local Government Area of the state.

    The former APGA stalwarts also declared their support for a PDP governorship aspirant, Dr Ifeanyi-Chukwuma Odii

    In a speech, the former Deputy Chairman, Mr Ramson Nwigbo, and one of the defectors, described Odii as a man with the capacity to govern the state.

    “As former members of APGA, we decided to join PDP and support Odii to ensure that a candidate in the heart of the people becomes the governor in 2023.

    “We dumped APGA to join PDP in the interest of our people.

    “We want to support a true man, who has a programme for human capital development and economic growth, amongst others,” Nwigbo said.

    Mr Okorie-Chukwumaobi Okorie, former Organising Secretary of APGA, said they defected to PDP to support Odii in order to move Ebonyi forward.

    “We have found that Odii is credible and, with him, there is hope for the people.

    “We are here today to assure him that wherever he goes, we will go with him.

    “This is because hel is a man that can bring smile to the faces of our people.

    “We, the defectors, are saying that we are solidly behind him for 2023.

    “We are standing here today as former members of APGA. “Your declaration for governorship is a welcome development,” Okorie further said.

    In a response, the governorship hopeful reaffirmed his readiness to use his wealth of experience in business to bring economic development to the state.

    “I assure you that the PDP, which you have joined today, would surely give all of us shelter.

    “As for my capacity, I know how to turn resources to multiple resources.

    “Thank you all and I urge you to keep the flag flying,” Odii, who is the President of Ebele and AnyiChuks Foundation, said.
